After seeing this post floating around my dashboard lately my brain has been running wild.

Picture this AU. It's the late 80s to early 90s, somewhere around there. Kristina has recently started attending prestigious boarding school Hillerska. She's trying to meet the right people and fit in. She's the Crown Princess. She's not really sure *who* she is outside of the title and she's only 16. Her cousin, Carl Johan is always hanging around reminding her to sit with the right people and smile at the right time. She's frustrated and stressed and frankly anxious. One day she's going to be *queen*.

So one night she opens her window and slips out. She gets on a bus, not having any real destination in mind. After figuring out how to pay (future queens do not carry cash usually) she sits down. When people start to exit the bus she gets off and finds herself by a grassy football field. A game is going on, and people are standing and watching. For a brief moment she wonders what would it be like to be just a regular person. A person without the weight of a nation on her shoulders. And that's where she sees her. Under the lights of the football field. On the sideline with some friends. She makes one, two, three steps and extends a hand. And that is when she meets the one who would later be called an unfortunate romance. Linda Eriksson.

Linda and Kristina are around the same age.

Linda has started attending local school Marieberg. Hillerska charges tuition as well as board back then and most local Bjärstad kids attend Marieberg because $$$.

Linda and Kristina spend ages together sneaking around, reading books and magazines, sitting under trees holding hands covertly. Kristina even picks up a little Spanish.

When Kristina comes back to Hillerska that night after meeting the love of her life Linda she's caught by the prefect and made to apologize. The next morning Carl Johan, her cousin (August's father) asks how her "socialist safari" went. 🙄

Kristina and Linda engage in a metric vaginaton of sapphic pining.

Unfortunately it all comes crashing down when Carl Johan catches them kissing (and maybe takes a Polaroid). Cue the crown trying to fix everything, King Kristina's Dad TM comes down the school himself. It's easier in that time to cover things up and the Polaroid is well. A Polaroid. So he says "We can just...sweep this unfortunate friendship under the rug" but in Kristina's heart she knew it was romance.

Kristina twirls her hair and giggles when she thinks of that megawatt grin of Linda's.

Kristina owns a locket with Linda's picture. It's an inexpensive oval locket and the cheapest piece of jewelry she has because it was a gift. She hides in under her shirts and dresses and keeps it in a pair of socks in her sock drawer.

She tried to give Linda a bracelet in exchange but didn't get Linda wouldn't takeout because it costs more than her dad makes in two weeks.

because sometimes there are invisible tests and invisible rules and you're just supposed to ... know the rule. someone you thought of as a friend asks you for book recommendations, so you give her a list of like 30 books, each with a brief blurb and why you like it. later, you find out she screenshotted the list and send it out to a group chat with the note: what an absolute freak can you believe this. you saw the responses: emojis where people are rolling over laughing. too much and obsessive and actually kind of creepy in the comments. you thought you'd been doing the right thing. she'd asked, right? an invisible rule: this is what happens when you get too excited.

you aren't supposed to laugh at your own jokes, so you don't, but then you're too serious. you're not supposed to be too loud, but then people say you're too quiet. you aren't supposed to get passionate about things, but then you're shy, boring. you aren't supposed to talk too much, but then people are mad when you're not good at replying.

you fold yourself into a prettier paper crane. since you never know what is "selfish" and what is "charity," you give yourself over, fully. you'd rather be empty and over-generous - you'd rather eat your own boundaries than have even one person believe that you're mean. since you don't know what the thing is that will make them hate you, you simply scrub yourself clean of any form of roughness. if you are perfect and smiling and funny, they can love you. if you are always there for them and never admit what's happening and never mention your past and never make them uncomfortable - you can make up for it. you can earn it.

don't fuck up. they're all testing you, always. they're tolerating you. whatever secret club happened, over a summer somewhere - during some activity you didn't get to attend - everyone else just... figured it out. like they got some kind of award or examination that allowed them to know how-to-be-normal. how to fit. and for the rest of your life, you've been playing catch-up. you've been trying to prove that - haha! you get it! that the joke they're telling, the people they are, the manual they got- yeah, you've totally read it.

if you can just divide yourself in two - the lovable one, and the one that is you - you can do this. you can walk the line. they can laugh and accept you. if you are always-balanced, never burdensome, a delight to have in class, champagne and glittering and never gawky or florescent or god-forbid cringe: you can get away with it.

you stare at your therapist, whom you can make jokes with, and who laughs at your jokes, because you are so fucking good at people-pleasing. you smile at her, and she asks you how you're doing, and you automatically say i'm good, thanks, how are you? while the answer swims somewhere in your little lizard brain:

how long have you been doing this now? mastering the art of your body and mind like you're piloting a puppet. has it worked? what do you mean that all you feel is... just exhausted. pick yourself up, the tightrope has no net. after all, you're cheating, somehow, but nobody seems to know you actually flunked the test. it's working!

I love the idea of the Wayne kids dropping extremely vague and disturbing comments during galas. Especially when in uncomfortable situations or if they're just bored. They pull out things from their nightlife too. Other times they just make shit up.

I made a viral meme thing that went like, “Bro doesn’t even know he’s a metaphor for _____” and it would be stuff like capitalism and alcoholics n such, I believe someone used it on me and I was a metaphor for insecurities and it messed me up a little.

listen there really was just something about how in the book, snow’s 3-page descent from hesitant lover boy to deluded mfer happens entirely in his mind. lucy gray gives him no indication whatsoever that she suspects him, that she’s going to leave or betray him. he’s just sitting quietly in the cabin waiting for her to return when that seed of calculated suspicion, which he has needed to survive the capitol, takes a hold of him and chokes the life out of any goodness left inside him. it really drives home your terror as a reader that “oh my god did he kill her? did she escape? what happened to her? why would he even think that?” in a way that when the movie had to adjust for visualization it lost some of that holy shit this guy has lost it emphasis.
