word count: 2.5k // read on ao3
The 5 AM sun shines rays through the cracks in your plan. You thought you’d been convincing enough with your face pancake-flat against the pillow and your left arm thrown out of the blanket just so. You’d even made sure you had a foot poking into Leon’s side the way he always grumps about, but somehow, your boyfriend always seems to see right through you.
Just like now.
A busybody poke on your shoulder. “Sweetheart,” follows a drowsy whisper, “what’re you doing?”
Sleeping since last night, thank you very much.
“No use playing possum. You haven’t moved an inch since we went to bed and you, ma’am, can’t sleep still to save your life. C’mere,” and you’re tugged to Leon’s side of the bed, the top of your head peppered with slow, sleepy kisses as he hugs an arm around your middle. “Did you sleep at all tonight?”
You clutch his forearm like a safety bar on a rollercoaster. “A little.”
“Enough?”
“Um…”
Leon kisses his teeth. He’s usually the one on the receiving end of these questions, but he’s picked up a couple things from you. “Too hot? Too cold? Anything I can get you?”
“Nothing’s wrong, I just can’t fall asleep.”
A quiet sigh from you, a hum of understanding from him.
“Because you’ve been thinking again.” He asks if you want to talk about it.
“It’s just a bad night,” you mumble, playing absentmindedly with his fingers. “Overwhelmed. Been getting into my head about everything I should be doing but don’t. I feel like I’m letting everyone down all the time.”
In the champagne pink of the early morning light pouring through the bedroom window, your eyes trace the corded muscle of Leon’s arm around you – a testament to the strength it takes to do his job every day. There’s scars here, burn marks there, a plum-hued bruise.
Your words stumble to a halt. Embarrassed color rises to your cheeks.
The matter is that scars from his missions to the ends of the earth litter the chest cradling your back right now. Leon must be sore and aching, listening to you whine like a child with too much food on your plate. What could be keeping you up at night when he shoulders your worst nightmares for a living? All while you lay cuddled and coddled? You don’t know the first thing about worry, the paralysis in his bones that must pale to yours.
Guilt creeps up your spine, and Leon frowns at your sudden silence. You’re retreating into a shell he’s called home too many times. He won’t have any of that with you.
“Hey, hey, you’re okay,” he soothes, smoothing back your hair. “I’m still here. You don’t wanna talk right now?”
You let go of his arm and burrow into your pillow, mumble about how you like sleeping late on weekends anyway.
A scoff sounds behind you. “Sleep late, my ass.”
Leon’s arm comes circling back over your ribs in an instant. He squeezes you so tight to his chest that you feel his heart thump behind your back, and you can’t help the unexpected laugh that bubbles up your throat when he lets go. It’s his favorite reflex of yours.
“If you won’t talk, I will.” Leon presses a kiss to your cheek. “Gonna distract you for a bit, sweetheart. Humor me?”
“Hm?”
“I wanna tell you about my favorite dream. You’re in it.”
You can’t pretend that doesn’t catch your attention like lightning to a rod. Leon doesn’t dream much, not besides the nightmares that have him scrambling to throw off the covers in the middle of the night. 1998 hangs thick in the air of your bedroom some days, but for him to have a dream where you don’t die for a change? That’s new.
So is his hand starting to creep under your sleep shirt, playful circles tracing on the soft skin below your navel. Part of his distraction strategy. A successful one, if the skip in your heart rate has anything to do with it.
“This okay?” he rasps.
More than.
You reach behind, cradling his cheek to kiss him a proper hello; allow yourself an anticipatory inhale when Leon’s hand dives under the waistband of your shorts. It takes exactly three seconds for his middle finger to pinpoint the pearl of your clit, and he circles it twice, maddeningly slow, before sliding right under to trace along the seam of your entrance.
Leon keeps the pressure light. He needs your head clear so you listen.
“It always starts the same.” He shifts his hips so yours widen for him. “I’m standing in the middle of a huge field, a strawberry farm. There’s nothing around for miles, just rows of bushes full of berries and storm clouds in the distance. I find an empty basket in my hand.”
You imagine your mountain of a boyfriend holding a basket like Strawberry Shortcake. Adorable. “You dream about picking strawberries?” you giggle, arching your back to fit more comfortably against him, and your consideration earns you a searing dip of his finger into your pooling arousal.
“That,” Leon chuckles, “and a nagging, sinking feeling that I should be doing something but I can’t.”
Oh.
“Mhm. It hits me that I have to pick as many strawberries as I can before the storm rolls in, and I can’t even move, sweetheart.”
You swallow the returning lump in your throat. Push down a sigh that was building at the upward roll of his fingertip inside you. Leon tuts at your effort, coaxing the sound out anyway with a press of the spongy spot he knows is tucked at the back of your walls. You crumple at the delicious nudge; it leaves you open to welcome another finger into your warmth.
“But this is a good dream because,” Leon smiles at your next gasp, “then I see you at the edge of the field standing next to a little house, waving at me.”
He scissors you open like he’s got all the time in the world. You clutch the corner of your pillow when you hear it through the comforter: the soft, rhythmic squelch of his fingers curling into your cunt.
Pretending he can’t hear your whimpered little curses as he coos in your ear, “There you go, listen to that,” Leon continues. “That’s when I start thinking. There’s no way I can save all these strawberries in time. You’re standing there, smiling at me without a clue there’s a storm brewing, and suddenly all I can think about is getting you into the house before you get hurt.”
His lesson becomes one of endurance the more he talks. The fingers pumping into your pussy melt your brain into mush that’s chanting, more, more! Exactly the root of your problem.
“So then I- oh, poor baby. This isn’t enough?”
Shit. You forgot you talk in your sleep. And apparently when you get fingered too.
“Guess I can’t blame you. I get distracted in the dream too, fuck.” There’s a pause, a sputtering stop to the lovely fullness when Leon pulls his fingers out and promptly sucks them off.
Even a worm will turn; you certainly do. You whine Leon’s name when he makes a show of it, gazing at you with half-moon eyes and a boyish grin pulling at his lips. “What, it’s my fault you taste better than the strawberries did?”
No, for leaving you hanging. You were paying attention — maybe a bit too much.
“It was you, by the way,” Leon chuckles, lifting the comforter so his knees can bracket your thighs.
“I distracted you in the dream?” you gasp, sliding your hands up his shirt.
“In the best way, angel. You helped me get moving again.”
The peachy light of dawn caramelizes gold as Leon climbs on top of you. It doesn’t warm the bedroom quite yet; Leon makes sure the comforter is tucked over your bare skin after he finishes kicking off his pajama pants. He’s back to murmuring sweet nothings, gently tugging your shirt over your shoulders so he can kiss down the swell of your breasts. You’re so toasty under the covers that the goosebumps now speckling your chest are entirely his fault.
“I remember you picking a few berries off a bush,” Leon looks fondly up at you under golden lashes, pressing a gentle kiss over your heart, “and you just looked so content eating them. I was fretting over saving the whole field and you were fine with a handful.”
You’re itching to ask: but the storm’s still coming, isn’t it? Thunder, rain, your aching cunt dripping onto the sheets right under him.
Leon is all too happy to answer.
One hand cradles the back of your head so he can drop his mouth onto yours, leaving the other free to slip under the blankets, rub consolation over the hood of your clit, and finally, finally, notch the swollen head of his cock at your entrance. You cry out, clutching at Leon’s hair when he sheaths himself in a buttery-smooth stroke – as if it could be any other way with how you’ve melted like chocolate in his hands. You both gasp at the stretch.
Leon’s jaw works as he kisses you, savoring you. Spit bridges your mouths in between split-second gulps of air. Your heart thumps against your ribcage like you’re hanging off a precipice, no difference in the dizzying drop that waits ahead. His length sits adjusting inside the squeeze of your plush walls.
Leon’s sentences come out chopped and desperate as he alternates sucking berry-toned love bites between your breasts, and he admits, “I don’t save the all the strawberries.”
You wheeze as if you’ve dashed across the field yourself. “No?”
“Just enough to last us the storm. Fuck the rest, figure it’ll grow back. Only need to focus on what matters – getting enough for you – so I pick a couple,” the thick of his cock is suffocating when it’s this still, “run,” Leon pants at the first snap of his hips against yours, outrunning the storm all over again, “and pull you inside the house before lightning strikes.”
Electric pleasure curls up from the base of your spine, spreads to your head and flickers down to your toes as Leon starts pounding into your pussy. No room in your chest for anxiety to linger when your eyes are rolling skyward. The edges of your vision melt into vignette as your lover sinks into you again and again.
Tunnel vision.
“Keep those pretty eyes open. Focus on what matters,” he repeats in a frenzied whisper, and the tunnel closes in.
All you see are Leon’s eyes. Smack dab in the middle of his blown out pupils is your reflection.
That’s it.
Coherency goes flying out the window with all your brainpower used up to connect the dots. “Leon, you-!”
“Tell me what you see, sweetheart,” he breathes sharply. “I know you can.”
You beg for mercy at each dig of his blunt cockhead. “Me, I get it, fuck! Please- just let me come!”
Course he can, he just has to drill something else into you first.
“Need to hear you say it,” Leon grits. Nips at the base of your neck as your nails claw stinging holds on his shoulders. “Shit, I’ll make you see stars, don’t worry, I just need to – oh, you’re so fucking tight! – get it in your head. You can’t shut down on me.”
You thrash under him, make more space for bruising kisses to bloom up your neck. “But you’ve had it worse,” you sob out, overwhelmed.
“How else do you think I know?”
He’s not letting you head off into your own storm alone. Not when you’ve saved him from his.
“Tell me you’ll let me in next time you get in your head, and I’ll make you come. I’ll make you come so fucking good, baby,” Leon hisses, stealing one last kiss from your panting lips.
“Promise?”
“Promise.”
“I will.”
And you ought to thank your lucky stars your levees don’t hold.
It starts with spiraling cracks. Leon reaching down to press his thumb over your swollen clit. One shaky thrust away from dislodging the last brick holding you together. A blink-and-you’ll-miss-it flutter of your cunt, choked breaths torn from his throat when the silken clutch of your walls sends him into that final crescendo.
Leon’s fraying at the edges, obsessive in how rolls his thumb at the bundle of nerves that make you shriek his name, and you, hand in hand with him, finally let the swelling tsunami in the pit of your stomach topple your walls.
Turns out he’s right. Stars explode across the night sky when your eyes squeeze shut.
You can’t pay attention to much except the rolling tide of pleasure. Leon’s soon spilling into you, his brow pinched as he blindly works his spend into your cunt under the covers. His forehead glistens with sweat, hell, your baby hairs are a dripping mess, but strangely, you think you’ll spend the rest of your life chasing this warmth again.
Your heart’s never felt more weightless.
Glowing seconds sail by. Leon’s shaking arms eventually give way and he collapses onto your chest. You let out an “oof!” at the drop.
“And then the dream ends,” you hear him sigh, eyelids fluttering shut.
About time, you think, smiling as you brush a thumb over his cheekbone. “Then you wake up?”
“No.” Leon cracks open a sapphire eye and grins. “Sometimes we do this.”
In the little hou- Oh. “Fuck you,” you laugh.
“It’s my favorite for a lot of reasons!”
He sits up, keeping his touch featherlight when he pulls himself out from between your candied thighs. Tiny aftershocks jerk your thighs once, twice, and Leon takes the time to whisper soft apologies when he reaches for a tissue on the bedside table.
“I meant it back there, y’know?” he hums, gently wiping off the mess between your legs. “I hate seeing you so hard on yourself.”
“It just feels like I’m making a big deal out of nothing. Especially when you’ve been through worse,” you mumble, picking at the covers.
The tissue gets tossed into the trash, and Leon shoots you a small smile. “Worse to you, maybe. To me, the worst thing I’ve seen is watching you lose your spark and not being able to help.”
“You really think so?”
“Why wouldn’t I? I love you.”
So you remember your promise.
You tell him you love him too, no more secrets to keep in your head. The bedroom blooms warmer than you remember it ever being, a little slice of summer straight out of both your dreams.
You remember the strawberries from the farmer’s market in the kitchen, and that Leon makes killer Sunday pancakes.
You remember how much you love afternoon catnaps with your limbs tangled between his. Infinite possibilities pile high like the papers on your work desk. So much to get started.
Focus on what matters. The rest will grow back.
You turn the other cheek, and kiss your lover on the mouth.
psst, find more of my work here!

Joel Miller/Tommy Miller x Reader where she finds an old Sphynx (hairless ugly thing lol, but so affectionate) cat and carries him in her hoodie to keep him warm. Joel wonders why she's being shifty/what she's hiding. And isn't impressed when she finally shows him.
-
This is super random but I would miss my adopted Sphynx sooo much if I was thrown into the last of us universe 🙈😭 he's too domesticated to live as a stray lol he wears clothes (even legwarmers 🤣) and sleeps in my bed or inside my hoodie all day 🤣
Hope you're well x
Can We Keep Him?
Summary: You find a Sphynx cat while traveling with Joel, who doesn't want it. Warnings: post-outbreak, not proofread bc my own cats kept me up last night and im tired, let me know if i missed anything! Notes: i. love. cats. thats it thats the note
You and Joel stumbled upon an abandoned gas station and strip mall while making your way to your next trading spot. You two decided to split up and raid the abandoned buildings so you wouldn't waste too much time. You went into the gas station while Joel looked through the other buildings. It was already pretty picked over, but every once in a while, you would find something useful or just interesting.
You were walking through the dirty isles when you heard a crunch from the back. You immediately turned around, but saw nothing. You grabbed your flashlight and pistol, readying them as you two slow steps towards the sound. Another crunch and a rustle come from the back. You got closer and closer, pausing for a moment before turning the corner to prepare yourself. You didn't want to deal with infected.
You quickly turned the corner and aimed your flashlight at the noise. Two blue eyes stared back at you as you lowered your gun and flashlight. A Sphynx cat was just munching on some random food that was left, and probably expired.
"Aw, hey little guy," you cooed, putting your pistol in your waistband and crouching down in front of the cat. You carefully stuck your hand out to him, letting him sniff at your hand before rubbing his head against your hand. You gave him some scratches on his wrinkly little head as he walked closer to you.
"Will you let me take you?" You asked him when he put his front paws on his knees. He meowed at you and you picked him up, standing up with him in your arms.
You carefully opened your hoodie up and he instantly hopped in, happy for the warmth. You giggled and he stuck his head out, licking your chin.
"You gotta hide, buddy. I don't know if Joel will like you," you said, gently pushed his head back down. You made sure he was comfortable, then left the gas station to regroup with Joel.
----
Joel knew something was off with you. As you two continued on your way, your arms stayed wrapped around your torso and you didn't take your hoodie off, no matter how hot you were getting. He tried to ignore it, but he couldn't. So, he stopped walking and turned to face you.
"What's going on?" He asked.
Your eyes widened and you quickly looked away from Joel. "Nothing, why?"
"You're acting weird."
"No, I'm not."
"Yes, you are."
"Joel, I'm not, okay?"
He stepped closer, his hands going to his hips. "You really wanna do this?"
You sighed and rolled your eyes. You opened your hoodie up and carefully took the Sphynx cat you found out, cradling him in your arms. Joel was, at first, shocked you were able to hide the little guy so easily, then disappointed. Of course you picked up a stray cat, a hairless, wrinkly one at that.
"Where did you find that?" Joel asked.
"The gas station," you replied. "He was just too cute to leave and he immediately started to love on me, so..."
"Okay, first, he is not that cute. Kinda ugly, to be honest. Second, why on earth did you pick up a stray cat? You don't know what kinda diseases he has."
"I don't care, and he is cute! Can we keep him? Please?"
"No," Joel answered sharply.
"C'mon, Joel. Can you really say no to this face?" You replied, holding the cat out to Joel.
"Yes, I can. He's not a cute cat."
"He is! Plus, where are we gonna leave him that's safe?" You added. "Please, Joel? Just until we find a better place for him?"
Joel took a deep breath and grumbled something as he ran a hand across his face.
"Fine. We can keep him, but when we find a good place to leave him, that's it," he said before turning and continuing on your path.
"Yes!" You cheered quietly as you quickly followed Joel. "Now, what should we call him?"
"Dear lord," Joel grumbled, already regretting letting you keep the cat.

“I am anything but”
a/n: a little moment between viserys ii and luke reminiscent of a moment between the black queen and her second son:)
****THIS IS SET IN THE SAME UNIVERSE AS THE “LUKE AS DAENERYS BUT HOTD AU” BUT BEFORE ANY OF THE STARKS, ARRYNS OR VELARYONS ARRIVE
(pls comment any suggestions you guys have for what to name this au, my creative juices suck when it comes to naming😭)
••••••••••
Luke caresses his baby-bump as he walks alone in the corridors of his castle.
It was getting dark, and he and his family had decided to all halt their duties to join together as one during dinner. And all but one arrived on time, so Luke offered to go and find the missing one.
As he enters the war room, he sees it. White locks framing a face out of his view, dressed in blue, black and red.
“Viserys, I was wondering where you were. It is time for us to dine together with the rest of our family, we all agreed after all,” Luke gently whispers, though loud enough for the teenager to hear.
The adolescent turns to the brunette, one hand on the table in front of him, the table that resembles the Painted Table back in Dragonstone - their old home.
“Brother, I apologize. I must’ve been lost in my thoughts and didn’t take into account of the time passing by so quickly,” Viserys mutters, as Luke closes the distance between them.
He pushes his hand out towards the younger’s cheek, he knows better than to believe an excuse such as that. He’s used it much in his life after all.
“Vis, tell me what ails you, truly, and I shall do my best to guide you.”
Viserys turns his gaze away from his brother’s knowing eyes, and goes still and quiet.
Luke sighs, and gently grasps the silverette’s face to turn towards him, seeking his eyes to make contact with his own dark ones. When he gets what he wants, Luke opens his mouth, before Viserys beats him to it;
“I’m not like everyone else,” he whispers, as Luke’s thumb sways on his cheek, back and forth. “What do you mean?”
Viserys balls his hands, which Luke notes to be trembling. Again, the younger reaffirms, “I’m not like the rest of our family.”
“I’m not like Dalton, fierce and fearless.”
“I’m not like Egg, smart and your heir.”
“I’m not even like your twins, my nephew and niece, who are our people’s joy and pride.”
Luke frowns, as Viserys lifts his eyes to gaze upon the dark abyss of his older brother’s. He always found comfort in losing himself there.
“I’m not like you,” he mutters.
“I am not… perfect, like you,” he finally rasps out, eyes again finding its way far from Luke’s own.
The elder goes still. He’s seen a scenario like this before. He’s been in Vis’ shoes before.
“…My sweet boy,” Luke starts in a soft tone. “You are right, you are nothing like us.” As Luke says the final word, he sees and feels Viserys flinch, and hears his breath hitch.
“Yes, you are nothing like us, you are not fierce nor fearless like my husband, not smart or stubborn like Egg, nor are you our people’s cherished like Rhaelys and Rhaemon, but you are something else.”
Luke goes to bring his boy’s eyes back to his.
“You are clever, mischievous, and always full of joyful quips and tricks.”
“A jokester and prankster you are, my dear - you make the whole of our Isles laugh and smile.”
“You are our people’s smiles and laughter, my sweet boy. It’s hope for a better tomorrow.”
Luke smiles, his frown had long since disappeared as Viserys’ eyes gleam.
“And remember, whenever you think low of yourself, whenever you think I am nothing but perfect… I am anything but,” he finishes.
Viserys continues his silence, before he brings his palms to lay against his brother’s. The two stay where they are, uncaring of anything else but this moment.
“…Come, I feel our family has gotten restless in their waiting for us to start dinner. Let us go to them before they finish all the lemon cakes, my sweet boy,” Luke jokes, smiling brightening as he sees his brother’s face contort to a playful grin.
“Race you there?”
“In the condition I am in? As if!”
The brothers laughter echo on the war room, as they walk hand-in-hand to their awaiting family.

and then i remembered that oH la la land also exists lmao and then she just beamed at me like OOOMG I LOVE LA LA LAND IT'S SO GOOD I LOVE IT SO MUCH aaaand then it was my turn to be like. oh i actually haven't seen that one yet lmao

ALL HUFFING AND PUFFING WITH HER JAW ON THE FLOOR LIKE😱😱😱😱😱MICKEY THE MOVIE WATCHER HASN'T SEEN LA LA LAND WHAT IS THIS MADNESS HOW CAN THIS BE like can you be fucking serious lmao this made me so mad i would argue that whiplash is bigger than la la land but i didn't say anything abt you not having seen it but now here you are jumping in my face abt la la land............ Hogwarts
Harry
“I hope you know that when the day comes, I’m still a part of everything. Just call and I’ll be there.” I turned the stone over in my hand, staring at it. Should I? The letters Hermione had gotten through the book meant she had been doing fine, though I haven’t spoken to her since that night out in the forbidden forest.
“Harry.” I felt Hermione’s hand on my shoulder. “You need all the help you can get. She’s still on our side.” Hermione was always right. I swallowed hard on my pride, my thumb rubbing over the sigil carved into it.
“veni nunc ad me” I placed a small kiss on the stone, golden light emitting from it as it dissolved, turning into dust. Let's hope this worked.
“Who's that coming behind her?” I looked up to see the portrait or Arianna coming back, with someone in tow, and the painting opened.
Neville led us through the passage, explaining the changes that happened at the school. Anxiety gnawed at my stomach, and a feeling of hopelessness washed over me. What if I truly needed her, and she didn’t show up?
“How can we help Harry?”
Amsterdam
Aurelia.
I felt a small vibration in my pocket. I didn’t have to pull the stone out to know it was Harry. He was the only one who had the connecting piece.
“Sweet pea, do you mind helping me with dinner?”
I walked down the stairs from my room, seeing my father in the kitchen.
“I can’t stay.” He whipped around and turned to face me.
“Sweetheart, what are you talking about?”
“They need me. I don’t know when I’ll be home, but I promise I’ll come home.” He started to protest, but I was already out of the door, bag in hand. I had become used to apparting since we moved, it being the easiest way to get to and from the small isle off the coast when my doctor was located.
The school grounds had the anti apparting barriers up, so I couldn’t go directly there.
The minute my feet hit the ground in hogsmeade there was a screeching sound. I covered my ears and ducked into the nearest house.
“I’ve been expecting you.” I turned around to see the eldest Dumbledore sibling, Aberforth, seated at the table. “I assume you need passage, Golden girl?” I nodded and the portrait behind him opened up. He helped me into the hole in the wall, and I thanked him, making my way towards the castle.
I arrived in the hustle and bustle of students in the Room of Requirement.
“Lia!” Hecate’s arms were around me the minute I stepped out of the portrait. “I’m so glad you’re back, but we need to go. Snape called for all of the students..” She flung her robe over my shoulders, hiding my normal clothes. Her voice was quiet as she filled me in.
“Where’s Draco?”
“No one’s seen him since spring. Everyone assumed he was pulled out for death eater duties.” I nodded, my eyes catching sight of Theo’s tousled curls standing next to Millie. She saw me too, her eyes widening, looking around to make sure no one noticed me as the Hufflepuffs filed in front of the Slytherins.
“Lia what are you doing here?” Her whisper was harsh, but I know she meant well.
“Harry called. I can only assume he needed help.” Theo’s hand played with my hair, absentmindedly as Snape started speaking. “I’m going to help, but I also need a favor from you guys.”
“Anything golden girl.”
“I need to find Draco.” Theo pressed a light kiss to the back of my head, and that's when Chaos erupted. A handful of slytherin students stayed, but Mcgonagall sent the majority to the dungeons, and sent everyone under year 4 to their common rooms.
“What do you need, Potter?”
“Time.” I heard his voice and looked over at him. “As much as you can give me.” She nodded and Harry turned, spotting me. His expression grew soft and he came over, pulling me into his arms. He smelled different. More prominent was the smell of birchwood on him, less like the cider smell he carried during school. “You came.”
“I told you I would.” Without thinking I let him kiss me.
“I have to go. I’ll find you later…” He let go of me, running out of the hall. These boys would be the death of me. Everyone was preparing for a battle, and I helped Hecate and Millie escort the younger students to the hufflepuff common room, probably the safest space for them besides the dungeons. I saw a flash of white hair, my eyes drifting over to see Blaise and Goyle being pulled away. That had to be Draco.
“Lia, wait!” I followed them, turning around the corners, down the halls and eventually they came to the Room of Requirement. I followed them inside, pulling my wand out.
“It’s my mother’s. Powerful, but it’s not the same.” It’s been so long since I heard his voice, even with the venomous tone it made me want to melt.
“Lia what are you doing here?” Draco’s head snapped back at Harry’s words, our eyes meeting. “Don’t you dare think about hurting her, Malfoy.” I knew him better than that though. His eyes always showed me he’d never hurt me.
“I came to help…” Goyle started a fight between them, and Draco immediately ran to me, pushing me out of the way.
“You stupid girl.” His lips met mine in a frenzy. “You couldn’t stay away could you!” He raised his voice at me, but I couldn’t back down. “You were safe out there! Safe from me, from all of this.”
“Draco…” He abandoned whatever it was he came in to do to Harry. “I want to help…” His dark stormy eyes, how I longed for the last year to be lost in them one more time.
Our moment was interrupted by Ron’s screaming. “He’s set the bloody place on fire!” I wouldn’t lie, and say I wasn’t impressed by Goyle’s ability to use fiendfyre. Now, his ability to control it was a different story. I felt Draco’s hand guiding me up the tower of books, onto the high ground. I saw the diadem Harry had been trying to grab and I reached for it, my fingers just grasping it slightly. My foot slipped and I felt the heat against me.
“Rae there’s no time for that!” I watched Draco’s face fall as Goyle fell into the fire. My fingers latched onto the delicate metal, and I pulled it close to me and I tried to climb up more.
Harry flew by, grabbing Draco’s hand and hauling him onto the broom.
“Accio” Ron swooped and grabbed Blaise, and then it was me, watching the broom crash it’s way over to me. I heard voices calling and I jumped, landing on the broom and taking off, the flames catching Hecate’s robes. The minute I was out of the room I let go, the diadem fell to the ground, Hermione putting out the fire I brought with me.
Everything moved so fast, I didn’t register being pulled up until I felt hands on my torso.
“You stupid woman.” Draco’s lips came crashing into mine. “Do you enjoy putting yourself in danger?!” He spun around to Harry. “And you! You called her into this mess?!”
“Draco…” I put a hand on his cheek, taking his eyes away from Harry. “I wasn’t forced. I came of my own accord.”
“You were safe. You were safe in the Netherlands, why did you come back?” It didn’t matter that the trio were standing around us, watching. He pulled me close, tears escaping.
“Draco… I was going to die anyway. I’d rather die helping people.”
“Lia.” Harry’s voice was quiet. “It didn’t work?” I shook my head.
“No. The only person who can cure me, is the person who inflicted me.” Draco’s eyes met mine, a mix of sadness and rage. “It was Voldemort.”
“Which means-”
“I’m going to live with this until I die.” There was a long silence, Draco holding me tightly in his arms.
“Not necessarily… It’s possible that when Harry defeats him, it may remove the rest of his magical bindings.” Hermione had a hold of Ron’s hand, looking at me. “If he tied to curse to himself like he did with the horcruxes, it’s possible that when he dies, the curse dies with him.”
“Mione, you’re a bloody genius.” The trio laid out a game plan, and Draco held onto me this whole time.
“Malfoy.” He looked over at Harry, his gaze hardening. “If you truly love her, now is the time to prove it. You need to keep her safe.”
“With my life.” I felt Draco’s grip tighten, if it was even possible. Before Harry could run off, I grabbed his hand, taking Draco’s wand and sliding him my own.
“Mine will work a lot better for you than Draco’s.” He didn’t say anything but nodded as he ran off in search of the snake. I turned to Draco, sliding his wand into his hand. “I think we should go find your parents… Wherever your father is, the rest of them are.” He nodded and pulled me into another kiss.
“Aurelia. I love you.” I didn’t mean to get emotional, but he pulled me in for another kiss, his thumbs wiping my tears away. “No matter what happens.”
“Draco. Don’t say goodbye just yet.” I clung to him tightly. “I just got back to you, give it a minute okay?” He didn't let go of my face, pressing his forehead against mine. “Dra-”
“Sh.” His lips grazed mine again. His eyes weren’t quite so stormy right now. He let me go after another moment, taking my hand and pulling me towards the fighting.
It was absolute chaos. Fire, ruin. It gave me a surge of adrenaline that would likely wear off in about an hour. As we ran out to the courtyard, he took off running towards someone who I can only assume was his mother. I noticed she was bent over a student and ran over.
“Rae…” I knew them. They had been a couple years behind me in Hufflepuff. Without thinking I put my hand over his wound, chanting the spell I had memorised. It took a minute for the wound to seal itself shut, But as soon as it was I hoisted him up, taking him somewhere safe. “Rae!” Draco grabbed the other arm and helped me. “We can’t be doing this. It’s leaving you vulnerable.” I knew he was concerned.
“Draco, I’m not a duelist. I’m a healer. If I can't help find a safe spot for them, I’m not doing my duties.” The 5th year stirred slightly. I dropped down putting my hand on their shoulder. “Hey. Franklin was it?” He gave me a small nod, wincing. “Can you find your way back to the common room from here?” He nodded again and I gave his shoulder a squeeze before rejoining Draco. “You can protect me…”
“Well obviously. I have no choice anyways. You’ve clearly made up your mind.” His smile betrayed the tone of voice he chose. “My mother can help with moving people. I gave her wand back so she’s not defenceless.” I nodded and the two of us ran back out, helping collect the wounded. Narcissa was her name, I found out. She was strikingly beautiful. He truly was the perfect mix of his father and mother. I looked up and spotted a death eater running at her.
I threw my hand up and watched the shield appear in front of her, a shimmering gold from my hand. She hexed the man who ran at her, and came over to help me with the student. “You are exceptionally talented my dear.” Her smile was soft, even during all this death and destruction. “It’s no wonder he loves you.” I felt my face flush scarlet, and as we dropped this student off she took off, disappearing from the battle.
I hadn’t realised I lost Draco in all of that. I tried to calm the panic bubbling in my chest, when I felt the wind knocked out of me.
“You idiot! Why were you just standing there?” Theo had a deep gash on his face, his robes were scorched in places. “Come on, we need to move.” He pulled me up from where he had knocked me down, flinging a spell at a nearby death eater. He pulled me past the fighting, and in turn, I pushed him into a broom closet, locking the door behind me. “Well, as much as I’d love to, I don't think now is the best time.”
“Oh shut it. I’m taking care of your face.” He always had that dumb smirk on his face when he thought he was being so smooth. I placed my hand on his cheek, trying to focus on something other than the fighting just outside the door. “It’s going to scar.”
“That’s fine. I’ll just be sexier.” We both laughed and I unlocked the door, the two of us sneaking out to rejoin the battle. We eventually found Draco and Millie, the two of them backed against each other, fighting off 4 other people. Theo didn’t waste any time, firing spells one after another, and I made a shield for them. I couldn’t do much offensive magic wandless, but conjuration and restoration were my schools of choice, so I did what I could.
“Lia! Watch out!” I whipped around to see Millie in front of me, taking the hit meant for me. Thoeo struck the man, giving him spell after spell and I bent over Millie, tears threatening to spill over. My hands glowed over her skin, but nothing was happening. “Aurelia.” My eyes snapped up to hers.
“No. No, no absolutely not, I'm not losing you.” Her hand was so cold against my face. I had to keep trying. If I couldn't save my best friend, what was I good for? I’m sure if I couldn’t be of service I was worthless. “Millie please…”
“Do you remember the summer before school?”
“Millie no don’t. I’m gonna save you, I have to save you.”
“You already did.” My muttering stopped and I met her eyes, tears already overflowing. “You saved me every day of our lives, and I always knew you’d be great.”
“Millie no I love you…”
“I love you too.” She closed her eyes and I started panicking, whispering spells faster.
“Lia…” I could hear Draco and Theo, but it felt like I was underwater. Grief swallowed me whole when her ragged breathing finally stopped. I screamed. It was all too much. Too overwhelming.
“Aurelia!” My eyes met Draco’s and his face fell. “Aurelia what did you do?” I blinked once, scanning around at the mass of unconscious people surrounding us. I blinked twice and saw mostly death eaters. I turned my eyes back to Millie, gripping her cold hand.
“I can’t do this…”
“Come here.” I felt Theo’s arm pulling me off the ground, watching as both sides collected their dead and wounded.
Harry I heard her strangled cries from the courtyard, finding the area littered with bodies. Theo and Draco had already been taking care of her, so I continued making my way to the boathouse. I had to find that snake.
And I did. I hadn’t expected to find Snape in his final moments, silently pleading for me to take his tears. I made my way solemnly to the headmasters office, immersing myself in the pevensive.
“You’re raising him like a pig for slaughter!”
“Don’t tell me you’ve grown to care for the boy?” Snape produced a doe out of his wand, his patronus flitting away in an instant. “After all this time?”
“Always.”
His only friend had been my mother. Things over the years started clicking and I stepped out of the office. Hermione and Ron had attempted to come with me. “I have to do this alone.” I could feel myself choke on my own voice. “I think I've known for a while now. Hermione, I think you did too.” I made my way out of the castle, finding Aurelia in the middle of the courtyard by herself. She hadn’t moved away from Millicent’s body.
“You can approach me, Harry. I’m not as dangerous as I feel.” She turned to face me, and I pulled her into my arms, one last time. “You’re sacrificing yourself?”
“I have too.” I gripped her a little tighter, her floral scent still lingering beneath the dirt and blood. “I’m sorry about earlier. When I kissed you. I wasn’t thinking.”
“I know. And I also want you to know that I’ll always love you. At least a little bit.” I pulled back, her rose gold irises swimming with sadness.
“I will always love you too, Aurelia.” She pressed a light kiss to my cheek. “Even if that love changed.” As we broke apart finally I saw Draco approaching out of my peripheral vision. “Thank you. You really are the Golden Girl.” She laughed and hit me playfully.
“Go save the world, Chosen One.”
This was it.
Aurelia
I watched him walk away, towards the forest, and for the first time that day, I felt a glimmer of hope. Draco didn’t say anything about the exchange, just wrapping me up tightly in his arms, my back to his chest.
“Come on. Let’s head inside love.” I nodded and Theo grabbed Millie’s body, walking in ahead of us. I stood beside the rest of the Slytherins as they gathered around their fallen classmates. Draco had my hand in his the entire time. It was hard to form words. How would father take the news? Millie was like a daughter to him too. I should have told him. He could have helped.
I felt a small tap on my shoulder, and turned to see Arthur Weasley behind me.
“Oh, hello Mr. Weasley.”
“Please call me Arthur.” He had a soft smile, despite losing his son during the battle. “I was just informed your father was here. I figured you’d want to see him.” I peeked around him to see my dad, his blonde mess of a hairstyle helping some of the wounded.
“Dad…” I let go of Draco, pushing through the crowd towards him.
“Oh my golden ray of sunshine.” I never thought my dad could hug me any tighter than the bear hugs he gave me at the start of every year. “You could have told me. I’d have come with you.” I started crying again.
“Dad… Millie…” He shushed me, his hands rubbing my back.
“I know sweetheart. It’ll be okay.” After a minute he let go of me, his gaze drifting over to Draco, who had been slowly approaching. “This must be the man you talked about all year.” I groaned a little, my face turning red. My dad held his hand out to him anyway. “Alistair. It’s a pleasure to finally meet you, Draco.”
“You as well sir, I just wish it was better circumstances.” Draco’s hand slipped into mine again. People started moving out of the hall, muttering. It had to be Harry. I pulled Draco with me, my father following behind us.
"HARRY POTTER IS DEAD!" The pit in my stomach grew. Ginny's strangled cry caught my attention. Voldemort went into some big speech, Draco's father motioning for him to come over.
I don't think my dad ever told anyone he used to be a death eater. Voldemort made eye contact with him and he stood stiff as a board.
"Of course we'd also take traitors back."
"Never." My father had an air of confidence about him, he pulled me and Draco back a bit further. I held on tightly to Draco's hand, turning to look up at him.
Neville had started speaking, but I was too lost in thought to pay attention to him. There's no way Harry could be dead. I refused to let go of that tiny glimmer of hope from earlier.
I was pulled out of my thoughts by Draco, pulling me close to him as chaos erupted again. Harry hadn’t died, but I was having a hell of a time processing things. My father fought tooth and nail against his ex comrades, and I saw the snake moving past. That was how I could help. I took off after Harry and Voldemort, trying to separate them from his snake.
I pushed a barrier before Nagini could strike at Harry, her eyes turning back towards me. "This is for my mother." I used as many offensive spells as I could, striking the snake several times with fire, ice, anything. I felt years of suppressed emotions and memories bubbling up through me, feeling the rage grow within me. I stumbled backwards, losing my balance. Nothing was working. This snake was practically invincible. I felt my back hit the wall as my knees gave out, Nagini seeing the opportunity to strike.
Draco
That stupid girl would be the death of me. I didn't have a chance to run after her before her father and I were swarmed. I hadn't ignored Voldemort's words to him, but it gave me a renewed sense of vigour and hope. Someone had left his service and survived. My father had been too scared of the consequences, but I wasn't. I would do whatever it takes not to go back to that life. "Draco!" I turned towards the sound of her father's voice. "You have to find her. NOW!" I nodded, and he covered me as I ran in the direction I last saw her. I turned the corner, watching the snake slither after her. Just as I was about to reach her, I saw his snake ready to strike. No. I couldn't lose her like this. I went to make my move when Longbottom came out of nowhere, his blade slicing clean through the snake, the dark magic spilling into the air. I ran past him kneeling next to her as she pulled me into her. There was a deep gash on her forehead, staining part of her hair red with blood. She gave her thanks to Neville, and then we sat there, hidden from the rest of the battle. Her lips met mine, soft and sweet, unlike the scared movements from earlier.
I heard footsteps but I didn't acknowledge them until Theo spoke up. "Looks like I won't be the only one with a sexy scar." She laughed and I felt my cold heart melt more.
"Aurelia." She turned to look at me and I placed my hand against her forehead, muttering the same spell I heard her use on that 5th year earlier. It sealed and stopped bleeding, but would definitely scar. I didn't care though. She would always be stunningly beautiful. "Will you marry me?" She nodded, tears springing in her eyes and she kissed me. I could never grow tired of this.
July 1998
“Hey, Draco?”
“Yes?” I poked my head out at her, midway through brushing my teeth. Her brow was scrunched up at the paper she was reading. She didn’t say anything, so I finished.
“Your father is going to be on trial?” When I walked out of our shared bathroom, she looked at me, concern was growing in her eyes. “Did you know anything about this?” I sat down next to her at the table, pulling the Daily Prophet out of her hands.
In the on-going Death Eater Trials, Lucius Malfoy has asked that his be kept private and not a public hearing. There are still questions as to whether his son, Draco Malfoy will also be standing trial as well.
“Well, I guess that ruins the vacation plans.” She gave me a sheepish smile and I kissed the top of her head.
“We’ll figure it out. Come on, or we’ll be late.” She nodded and stood up, pulling her hair back.
October 1998
It was strange reading about my own trial in the papers. Aurelia’s father had been essential in my father’s trial, I’m hoping he’ll be able to save mine the same way. She had her arm in mine the whole way. We took the tram from our shared flat in Birmingham to London. She'd fallen asleep on my shoulder. She was up so late at night it was a wonder she got any sleep at all. When we got off the tram, I tugged her softly to one of the ministry phone booths, taking the back way to avoid reporters.
"Oh Draco." As soon as we got to the courtrooms my mother embraced me. "I talked to Alistair, he said he was more than willing to be a voice for your trial, he'll be here any minute." After she let me go, she wrapped Aurelia up in the same embrace.
"Thank you so much. You and your father both have done so much for our family."
"How is Lucius doing?"
"Other than the mandatory therapy and house arrest, he's been fine." She smiled softly at me. "He wanted to be here today for your trial, but with the Prophet following his every move, he figured you should at least get some privacy." Alistair joined us shortly after, and we entered the courtroom, our family moving to sit in the stands.
"Draco…"
"It'll be okay love." She pulled me towards her, burying her face into my chest. "I promise. Everything will be fine." I gave her one more small kiss before she went to sit next to mother.
The trial felt like it dragged on for hours, all of my memories from the last 2 years being brought to the surface for them to skim through as if it were a book. Alistair proved to be essential to my trial as well as keeping Aurelia from having to answer for the vanishing cabinet. When we left, I had been acquitted of all charges, including the murder of our former headmaster, since it was proved to be Snape who dealt the final blow. My mind was racing as everyone stood up to leave, Aurelia practically jumping over the side towards me.
"Oh thank goodness." Her arms were around me in less than a second. I had never been so relieved to smell her shampoo in my face. "Let's go get something to eat." I chuckled at her, how the first thing she jumped too was food.
She insisted my mother and her father join us at the small muggle restaurant she picked out. I don't think I could ever get used to the kindness she showed everyone, speaking in a foreign language and translating for our server instead of forcing her to use broken english.
"You're very proficient in Italian." My mother had been soft on her since the battle, almost constantly asking us over for dinner so she could get to know Aurelia more.
"It was dad's idea. We travelled a lot before mum passed, and she was a linguist." There was a proud smile on her father's face. Aurelia and mother got along great, that is, when they spoke. The two of them had a lot of similarities, in that they both just wanted to silently enjoy the food. Her father was a great conversationalist. It made me wonder why he wasn’t in the Ministry.
“Oh sweetheart, before I forget, your grandmother Clara was asking for you to come visit her.”
“Dad. I really don’t want to go all the way out there to see her. I already went a couple years ago.” I could hear the slight whine in her voice. She only spoke a little about her mother’s family, but I never asked further.
“Well what did you expect? To want to get married and have your grandmother not be involved? She practically made me carry that engagement ring around when I asked for permission to marry your mum. She’s probably expecting the same from him.” His voice was matter-of-fact as he continued eating.
“Okay fine. But I get to decide when the trip is, and afterwards I want us to get the cottage in amsterdam.” I almost spit my drink out, and my mother shot me a glare.
“Draco, when were you going to tell us you wanted to move?” Aurelia looked at me, her eyes wide.
“You didn’t tell them yet?” I shook my head.
“Well, you said we were going to wait until my father was off house arrest anyways, and it hadn’t come up.”
“Draco Lucius Malfoy.” Yep. There it was. Both Aurelia and my mother were glaring at me. Alistair, in the meantime, was just happily eating his food.
Aurelia
December 1998
“Okay Draco, please remember that my grandmother was a muggleborn.”
“Babe. It’ll be fine.” He gripped my shoulders, pulling me to face him “I’ll be on my best behaviour. I swallowed hard, anxiety eating at me. Clara was not the… nicest woman. “Besides, we’ll leave here this weekend, have Christmas with my parents, and then it’ll be just the two of us, by ourselves in Amsterdam.” I nodded and he kissed me softly. “Come on. From what your father has told me, she doesn’t seem like the person to be kept waiting.” He pulled me up to the small house, his hand rapping against the door. When it finally swung open, my aunt Mary threw her arms around me, squealing.
“Oh Aurelia, it's been so long.” She pulled away, giving me a kiss on the cheek. “Oh and this must be the fiance your father warned us about.” I felt the heat rise to my cheeks, but Draco just went to shake her hand. She pulled him into a warm hug instead. “You can call me Mary, come on in both of you! It’s freezing out here.” She stepped aside and Draco pushed me lightly through the doorway, grabbing our bags off the ground. The living room was softly lit, the tree in the corner by the fireplace making the room glow. My father came by, kissing my forehead and taking the bags from Draco, telling him to make himself at home. I could hear the kids in the kitchen, all chatting and playing. My grandmother, thankfully, wasn't in the room. I felt the tension leave my shoulders and took my coat off, placing my boots on the rack with everyone else's. Draco mimicked my movements and I felt his hand brush against my ass, giving it a light squeeze.
“Draco” It came out as a hiss, but his smirk melted my heart again. “Not here. There are children.”
“Yeah, in the other room.” His breath tickled my ear. He always made me so bothered for no reason.
“Lia!” I felt a pair of small arms on my leg, and looked down to see one of my cousins, Lee, clinging to me. He had to be what, 6 now?
“Wow you’ve gotten so big!” I swooped down to grab him, letting his giggles fill the room as I pecked kisses on him.
“You missed my birthday party.” His face turned serious and he crossed his arms.
“You’re right I did. Well, would it help if I said I got you two presents to make up for it?” I saw his eyes twinkle a bit before he looked away, squirming out of my grasp.
“You wish.” I set him down and he ran back into the kitchen.
“Draco, go ahead and have a seat. I’ll grab us something to drink. Are you hungry?” He pondered for a moment, before sitting down on the couch against the wall.
“No, I think I can hold off till dinner.” I wanted to wipe that smirk off his face sometimes. I didn’t say anything, just nodding and walking off into the kitchen.
Draco
Her mothers family was huge. I’ve seen at least 4 small children run by the kitchen entry, and just as many adults. I was busy looking at the flames dancing in the fireplace, thinking about everything that still needed to be done, when a figure stepped in front of me.
“Hi. you must be Lia’s boy?” The girl in front of me was no more than 16, but she had the same golden irises as she did. I nodded and she sat next to me. “You know you’d look more approachable if you didn’t have that scowl plastered on your face.” I feigned offence.
“I have no idea what you’re talking about.” She smiled, and then stood up promptly, nudging me with her foot.
“Katherine, shouldn’t you be helping your mother with dinner?” I got the hint and stood up, a smaller, old woman approaching.
“Yes, grandmother.” She scurried off to the kitchen. The way they ran had to be a genetic trait.
“You have some nerve showing up here, pureblood.” The old woman had a scowl on her face.
“Oh. Grandmother. You’re here.” Aurelia stood in the door frame, watching the older woman scowl at me. “And I see you’ve met-”
“I know who I’m looking at.” She turned towards Aurelia, and I saw my golden girl stiffen. “I’m looking at someone who would betray the memory of her mother to marry one of HIS people.”
“Clara, that's really not necessary. It’s the holiday. Could you put your own beliefs aside for one week?” I’d never heard that tone of voice from her lips before. It sent chills down my spine.
“It’s grandmother to you, you disrespectful whore.”
“Mother!” Her aunt was in the doorway. “That’s not any way to talk to your grandchildren.”
“She’s no grandchild of mine, marrying into the Malfoys. What is it he offered you? Money?”
“I offered her nothing.” I moved away from Clara, my arm wrapping around Rae instinctively. “Nothing except freedom.” She turned her beautiful rose gold eyes to me and I smiled. “Nothing except for my love and unconditional support. Something she obviously never got enough of.”
“Dinner is ready!” A voice called from the kitchens, but her grandmother stood there, glaring at us.
“Mother, come on.” Mary took her and led her into the dining room, away from us.
Aurelia turned to me, tears springing to her eyes.
“I’m so sorry Dray. I’d have never asked you to come here if I knew she’d behave like that.” I pulled her into me, planting a soft kiss on her hair.
“Rae. It’s okay my love. You can’t control her actions or thoughts.”
“I just wanted a nice holiday with you.”
“It can still be a nice holiday. Come on. Let's get some food.” The entire dining room halted when we entered, her father gesturing towards us to sit next to him, at the opposite end of the table from Clara. After we sat down, everyone started talking again, lively chatter throughout the room. This must be why she was always so quiet during meals. Occasionally I saw one of the kids try to speak to her, but would be shut down by Clara. The old woman had a venomous look on her face the entire evening.
“Lia.” She looked up at the oldest cousin, Katherine I think was her name. “What ever happened with that other boyfriend? You were so smitten with him when you were 14.”
“Yeah Kate. When I was 14. He’s great actually. He sends me letters every now and again. We just didn’t work out.” She must have been referring to Potter.
“Now that was someone you could have had a life with.” Those were the first words Clara spoke to her during the meal.
“You know what Clara. I have tried over and over and over again to please you.” Rae stood up from her seat, slamming the empty wine glass down. I knew she had a couple drinks in her, but I didn’t think it was enough for this. “Nothing I ever do is good enough for you. I carried all of the burdens for years, and now I finally find my own happiness and it’s unacceptable to you?”
“Well maybe if-”
“If what. If I had just kept being the quiet, naive child you could manipulate?”
“Aurelia, sweetheart.”
“Shut it Mary. You’re literally always defending this vile woman. The woman who couldn’t be bothered to show up to her own daughter's funeral.” She grabbed her plate, not caring about the clatter from her putting her dishes in the sink. Even angry she was still polite enough to clear her spot. “It took me years to get to where I am. But no. I’m finally happy and even though I could give less of a shit about what your crotchety old ass has to say about my life, I still had the decency to show up to be respectful.” She pushed her chair in and pulled me up. “Since our presence bothers your highness so much. We’ll be taking our leave.” Her father looked up at her.
“Sweetheart.”
“Enjoy the rest of your life Clara. Maybe when you die someone will show up at your funeral and actually give a rat's ass about it. Because I sure as hell don’t.” She pulled me out of the kitchen, storming upstairs to grab our bags. I followed behind her, and softly closed the door. She began stuffing various items from the dresser into her bag, whispering to put an extending charm on it.
“Rae.” I pulled her into me, and she started sobbing. “My love…”
“I just… I just wanted to see my family.” I pulled her over, sitting her on the bed. “I’m so sorry Dray.”
“Hey, it’s okay.”
“No it’s not. She had no right to speak to you like that. She doesn’t even know you. She never even knew Harry. That’s all she did. Her whole life she’s only made judgments and never got to know anyone. Instead she’d rather blame everyone else for the misfortune that falls upon her family.” I rubbed small circles in her back. I’d never seen her come undone like this. She pulled away, face still wet with tears, trying to smooth the wrinkles forming in my shirt. “I’m sorry. I ruined your shirt.” I chuckled and pulled her close, placing a soft kiss on her lips.
“You never have to apologise to me for this. I’d rather you cry and ruin my nicest shirt, than to have you think you need to bottle everything up.” I brushed the tears away, and she held my hand to her face, her warm breath tickling my palm. “We don’t have to leave now. We can go to sleep and then leave in the morning.” She nodded and let go of my hand. “You’re absolutely brilliant, and it's not your fault she can’t see that.” I stood up, moving the bags off the bed and onto the chair in the corner. Rae was silent as she undressed and got into her pyjamas. The dark purple set my mother got for her for her birthday. Even with puffy swollen eyes, she was stunning. I stripped down to my boxers, and laid down under the covers, pulling her into me as the lights turned off. “I am so in love with you, Aurelia.” She smiled at me and buried her head into my chest.
“I love you too Draco.”
The next morning, she was awake before I was, setting the presents she got for her family under the tree, and packing things away. When I finally woke, she was sitting on the edge of the bed. I wrapped an arm around her to pull her closer, and she complied, laying down with the picture book in her hands.
“Love…”
“It was my mothers. This room. Everything in here belonged to her. Even though my mother asked for her things to be split in her will, Clara refused to let me and dad take any of it.”
“Is that why you were packing everything in the dresser?” She nodded and turned on her side, still clutching the thick leather.
“I can’t go without memories of my mother. Clara blamed me for her death. She said if I hadn’t been born, she wouldn’t have suffered the death she did at the hands of His followers.” I pulled her into me, sliding the book out of her hands and opening it. The very first picture is one of her Mother’s family, a lot younger. I had met at least one of the siblings last night, but didn’t catch the names of the brothers in the photo. “You wouldn’t have met my uncle Louis. He was shunned after my mother passed. No one talks about him anymore.” I felt her head on my chest, and my other hand went into her hair, playing with the loose waves. “My uncle John was the tall dark haired man who sat next to Clara last night. His wife passed away a couple years ago from an unknown illness. He hasn’t talked since. You met my aunt Mary last night.” Her fingers traced over the smaller woman in the front. “That’s my mother. Gaia.” She flipped the page to show more pictures, of a different man and a way younger version of her grandmother. “My grandfather, he named her after the goddess of the earth. He was a halfblood. I never got to meet him, but I’m told he was exceptional.” We flipped through the remainder of the book, her sharing more about her childhood with me. Opening up to the trauma she endured at such a young age. I couldn’t say anything in response. There were no words. She had been like me. Growing up with the highest expectations, but always failing to meet them. My grandmother had the same role her father played for her.
“You know, you’ll be meeting my grandmother in a couple days.” She turned her head to look at me, smiling and closing her eyes when my nails scratched her head slightly. “She’ll love you. I just know it.” She fell asleep and I kept playing with her hair, her breathing steady.
We left a couple hours later, apparating to my family manor. The plan had been to leave with her father, but she let him keep the car instead.
Aurelia
The cold hurt my skin when we appeared in front of Malfoy Manor. We didn’t say goodbye to anyone when we left, except for my father. To be honest, I couldn’t handle another heartbreaking goodbye. When we walked up to the doors, Draco gave me a soft smile. It was surprising to see how much he had changed in a short amount of time. He still was never a huge fan of the trio, but it was to be expected. A long standing rivalry doesn't just go away. His mother gave us both a bone crushing hug, leading us inside from the cold.
“I take it things didn’t go too well?” I shook my head and Draco helped me with my coat. “That’s too bad.” One of the house elves came by and grabbed our bags before disappearing, and his mother ushered us into the dining room for a late brunch. “Draco, Your grandmother will be coming tomorrow evening. Do you mind helping me get her room set back up?”
“Yeah, that’s fine.” Lucius joined us shortly after, the three of them chatting away about plans for the rest of the week. After we ate Draco took me around the Manor, showing me just about every nook and cranny available. Showed me his favourite spots to sit and read. They had a small room he had used to practice potions in during school.
“Rae?” I turned to look at him. “Are you okay?” I nodded and he chuckled a bit. “You just seemed kind of lost in thought there.”
“I think I might just be nervous.” He paused and grabbed my hands, rubbing my knuckles. “I don’t know what I even have to be nervous about. It’s very obvious your parents like me, and I know it won’t escalate like it did the other night I just…”
“You’ve never really gotten on with the older crowd?” I nodded and he pulled me into his arms. “You have nothing to be worried about.” He pulled away, and led me down the maze of corridors to his old bedroom. “We do have all evening to ourselves though. And I can always have one of the elves bring dinner up here for you if it would make you more comfortable.” I just nodded lightly, his hand pushing my cardigan down my shoulder. His lips met mine in a passionate kiss. We’d both been so stressed, with his trial and all the travel plans, we hadn’t had a moment like this in a while. He took his time undressing me, his touch reigniting the flame in me.
We could have spent hours, just laying there on the bed kissing. He was always leaving marks on me, but I didn’t mind. Old habits die hard, and if he needed to keep reminding people I was his, I’d let him. In reality I’d let him do anything he wanted with me. His breathing was still hard after round two, so I opted for laying into him. When he started to shift, I wrapped my arms around him.
“Love…”
“No. Not yet. Just a little bit longer.” I just wanted to stay like this, with our legs tied up in knots, and our hands intertwined.
“My love, I’m only going to shower. You can join me if it means that much to you.” I nodded and before I could think about moving, he scooped me up into his arms, carrying me to his bathroom. He set me down and turned the water on, making sure it was nice and hot before he pulled me with him. It was a pleasant feeling, him washing my hair for me. I sank into his touch, relaxing for the first time in 2 days.
“Rae?” I rolled my head up to look at him, his hands washing his own hair as he let me lean against him. “Do you… want to try stopping your medicine?”
“What do you mean?”
“Well… to see if Granger was right.” It took me a second before I realised what he was talking about. I had been taking it out of habit, and I hadn’t stopped to consider that the curse could have been gone. Would I have felt any different? “And if anything, it means that the medicine has been working which is also a good thing right?” I smiled against his chest. He had always been so pessimistic. I wonder what changed. “What are you thinking so hard about?” He laughed and I looked up at him.
“I was just wondering what changed.”
“What do you mean by that?” He laughed and rubbed that special conditioner he insisted on getting you, into your hair. “I just… It’s not a bad thing. Not at all. It’s just nice…” I could feel myself blushing and he pulled my head back up to meet his.
“Well, you played a big part in that.” He laughed again. “You’re absolutely the cutest tomato.” I buried my face in my hand as he laughed. He pulled my face up to meet his again. “I was in a very dark place. It was a very harsh time in my life. And when your dad is basically a psychopath wielding a cobra cane, you’re not bound to be the nicest geezer in the world.” He pulled me into the stream to rinse. I couldn’t help but smile. I just wanted him to trust me enough to open up. “My father was not the best in my childhood. But what matters to me is that we’re making amends and trying to see things differently.” I swallowed hard. Please don’t bring up Clara. He was silent as he held me. “Your dad calls you his golden Rae of sunshine, and I honestly could agree more.” He kissed me softly. I felt his hands massaging the soap in and let out a small moan.
“Dray.” I couldn’t go another round. I was exhausted. I needed a nap after that.
“Don’t worry. I fully intend on being a tease”
“You know I hate it when you do this.” I whined at him. I was too tired for him to make horny then not touch me for hours.
“Oh come on. You know you love it. It just makes it feel that much better.” He nibbled on my ear, groaning at the soft whimper I made. “Well, come on. You’re all rinsed up now.” He shut the water off abruptly, leaving me cold and running to grab the towel. He was chuckling when he came over, wrapping himself around me, still very naked. “We have a couple more hours? Is there something you’d prefer to do?”
“Yeah, I need a nap.” He laughed and picked me up in his arms as I yawned. Truth be told, these were my favourite moments. I’d never felt like this with anyone. He set me down on the bed, removing my towel and padding back to the bathroom to dry off.
“How did it go?” Hermione and I got coffee sometime after Draco’s trial ended. A small muggle shop she said she really liked. The whole place was covered in plants and books.
“It went very well actually. Can you thank Harry for providing those memories for the trials?”
“You know, you could just write to him yourself.” I could have. I don’t know why I never did.
“It wouldn’t be awkward for him? For Ginny? If I just wrote him a huge life update?”
“I mean, muggles do it in the form of Christmas cards. Harry was raised by his aunt and uncle.” I remember looking at my untouched latte, the little flower in the foam starting to disperse.
“Okay so, before I even think about writing him a life update, the question I should be asking first is; are we, me and Draco, both going to be comfortable with him being at the wedding.” Hermione fell silent, pondering my statement/question. “I don’t know. Like I know it won’t be for another few years. Either way, if he knows and isn’t invited, there’s a chance he’ll be hurt. If he doesn’t know, and still isn’t invited I feel like he absolutely would be hurt.”
“Well, have you brought this up with Malfoy?” She still never called him by his first name, no matter how close the two of us got. “We both already know Ron and I don’t care, and you’ve already said Malfoy wouldn’t mind Ron being there, especially since you wanted me in the bridal party.”
“I… There hasn’t been a good time. First his father’s trial, then his. And I’m dreading the absolute disaster Christmas weekend at Clara’s will be.”
“I think this is a conversation you should sit down with Malfoy about first. He’s changed a lot in the last couple years. Maybe he’ll be willing to make amends or start over. He seems to be doing that with Ron and I.” She always made a fair point. The dream shifted to the two of us in the same coffee shop, a week later with Hecate and Luna.
“Does Ginny know he kissed you that day?”
“Hecate, it was a spur of the moment. One kiss when you think you might die isn’t going to change how he feels.”
“She’s got a point though.” Hermione took a sip of her coffee before continuing. “Ginny was also in the area, he could have easily sought her out instead.”
“Oh no. You don’t think he’s going to try to stop the wedding to you?”
“No he’s not that desperate.” Luna’s voice was quiet, her tea almost gone. “I think Harry was just having a hard time getting over you.” The other two quieted and I awkwardly drank my iced coffee. “He seemed really remorseful, and when it appeared that you moved on yourself, that was when it really hit him. I saw it in his eyes that night.” You thought back to that December night when Draco had pushed him just enough.
“So… maybe he just needs more time?” I remember wanting to make myself smaller. He had been a dear friend. Is it really my fault we drifted so far?
“Did he not respond to your letter?” I shook my head. There was a sudden darkness, looming in the back of the Cafe, just behind the memory. The 3 of them didn’t say anything as I stood up to approach it, happily chatting about nonsense.
Vulnerable. I recognised this darkness. It was the curse. It had to be. It was always looming. I pulled up a chair, just in front of it. How lucid of a dream was this? Could I test the boundaries? I saw the flash to the last time I attempted, and the amount of time I spent on the brink of death. Would this be different? Voldemort was at the peak of his power when I tried. He’s gone now. Ashes in the wind. I reached out, hesitantly and the cloud almost jolted back, avoiding my hand. I needed to focus if I wanted to try. I needed to try. My palm finally connected with it, a soft glow coming from the spot. The chair disappeared and I was standing, pushing my arm further in, until I was completely inside. I had so many memories locked away in here, there was a small keyhole, at the end of this massive hall, and I walked towards it, thinking about the key for the diary Theo and Draco got me. When I reached the lock, the key was in my hand. It shouldn’t be this easy. Should it? I felt warm. It was a strange feeling. It wasn’t Draco’s warmth. Nor was it dad’s
“You’ve grown so much.”
“Mummy?” I turned around, the darkness disappearing. We were on the beach, over by the old house.
“You’ve become such a strong Witch.” She had the brightest smile. I felt her arms around me.
“Is this real? Or is this all in my head?”
“Well, why does it have to be fake if it’s in your head?” She let go and started walking towards a door. “Sunshine? Please tell your father I love him.”
“Mummy…” She disappeared through the door.
I came out slowly, the dim light from the candles making me wince.
“Sweetheart, are you okay?” I felt his hand on my cheek, wiping away my tears. When did I start crying?
“I…The curse is gone.” His lips came crashing into mine. “Dray…”
“Sh. it’s okay, my love.” He pulled me in closer. “Let me just have a silent happy moment.” I snuggled back into him. I’ll tell him about mum later.
Dear Harry,
It’s been a while. I’m sorry for that. I wasn’t ever quite sure what to say. I’m still not even writing this. I figured I’d give you a small update nonetheless.
Draco’s trial went well. Thank you for your testimony in that. That is going to be a debt I could never repay. His father is off house arrest, but doing mandatory therapy, and is under careful watch of the ministry. I’m sure you’ve heard everything from the Prophet about it. My family was asking about you, I know you really only met Kate that one time, but she’s quite fond of you it seems.
I know this may seem sudden, but I was wondering if you’d like to attend my wedding? Draco and I are going to travel a bit first, so nothing is set in stone, but I’d be honoured if you and Ginny could make it when that day comes.
I hope to hear from you soon.
Aurelia.
