BEGA SCHOOLGIRL MURDERS
BEGA SCHOOLGIRL MURDERS
6 October 1997
Best friends, Lauren Barry and Nichole Collins were aged 14 and 16, when they were kidnapped, raped and murdered in Bega, NSW by Leslie Camilleri, 28, and Lindsay Beckett.
On 5 October, on the long weekend, Nichole and Lauren decided to go to a party. The two men were driving on the highway when they noticed the girls walking and offered them a lift. Camilleri threatened them with a weapon and started screaming at the girls to ‘shut up’. The men repeatedly raped the girls over 12 hours whilst driving them to different remote locations throughout rural NSW and Victoria. The men then made the girls walk down to Fiddler’s Green Creek, Victoria; the girls worried for their lives, asked them if they were going to kill them, Camilleri said no. Camilleri then told Beckett to kill the girls which he did, one was stabbed to death and the other was drowned.
The men spent the next few days destroying evidence and then drove to Sydney. They became the main suspects and on 5 November, Beckett admitted that he killed both the girls and took the police to the location to show were the girls were. Camilleri told the court he was asleep the entire time and took no responsibility for what he did and tried to pin the entire crime on Beckett. Both men were sentenced to life behind bars and today are still locked behind bars.
Camilleri had a history of crime and was on bail for charges of raping a female child, aged 11, numerous times when she was in his care. It was only three days after Camilleri was released on bail for raping a child when Lauren and Nichole were killed.
Before the men raped and killed the schoolgirls, on 13 September, the two men had picked up a female drug addict, aged 19, and threatened her with a weapon and repeatedly raped her. When they turned their back to go to the toilet, she ran off half dressed. They told the police that she had consented in return for drugs and that she was crazy. The woman was so terrified she was too afraid to press charges.
In 2012, Camilleri pled guilty of the murder of Melbourne schoolgirl Prue Bird, 13, who disappeared from her home in 1992. Camilleri had planned the crime before it took place. Bird was last seen calling for help in the back of a vehicle being driven from her home. Her lunch was found uneaten on a table in front of the television and the family home’s front door was wide open. Camilleri, 22, kidnapped Bird with another man, held her captive inside a shed and raped her before killing her.

'On the Wall of Honor in the Commons Area at Paris High School hang photos of several noteworthy graduates. One noteworthy graduate is missing; you won’t find Billy Morris up there … yet.
After he attained a doctorate in chemical engineering from the University of Texas, for most of his working career, beginning at E.I. DuPont de Nemours & Company, his accomplishments remained in a “classified” mode. Yet, he is a prime example of how often Paris links to things of importance. This month he is not mentioned in the new movie “Oppenheimer,” but his role was at the Manhattan Project’s Hanford Engineering Works [HEW], in Washington state. His work in 1944 and 1945 was essential to the success of the plutonium delivery to Los Alamos for testing and building the bombs scientists assembled.
Morris was there on assignment. Not too long after he arrived at the Wilmington, Delaware, facility as a new employee, DuPont gave in to the aggressive desires of Gen. Leslie Groves, who had just completed direction of the construction called the Pentagon. He was now the chairman of the newly formed Combined Development Trust [CDT] which was given the task of the Manhattan Project. DuPont decided to participate in the building of the elusive bomb that would hopefully end World War II. Most assumed the race was to beat the Germans to the punch. Morris was sent to Oak Ridge, Tennessee. However, it was decided it was too dangerous to work on the separation of uranium and plutonium there, so a committee went west looking for a huge area away from the danger of destroying civilians if something went awry. Morris never discussed the process with his family or high school friends, but he most likely was part of the search. Thus, Hanford was chosen. Morris’ duties moved to that virtual wasteland next to the Columbia River; the residents were bought out and moved, and reactor buildings began to rise up.
Jokingly called “Ears” by his high school mates, he was tall, skinny and did have large auricles over-emphasized by short hair, much like his 1935 mates Tom Steely, James E. Brown and James Jenkins. Several in that class of very few athletes and many Young Sheldon Cooper-type “nerds,” were at least 6’2” in height. Morris could easily be mistaken for the older Sheldon in a television series called “The Big Bang Theory.”
The whole class, including women like Edith Johnson and Ruth Barnes, were highly successful in life. This entire mid-depression group might deserve a class composite on the east wall of the school’s cafeteria area. Jenkins became a surgeon and then a teacher at Emory University Medical School near Atlanta, Brown a Chamber of Commerce manager and insurance agent in Jacksonville, Texas, Steely a Paris newspaper owner, Johnson an interior designer, and Barnes a soda pop plant owner and manager. And, on and on with this group, who all served in some capacity during World War II.
At Hanford, Morris headed radiation safety. The first plutonium production reactor began operating Sept. 26, 1944. Years later, in a letter to his daughter and two sons, he wrote, “I was assigned to be in charge of health protection.” He added, four engineers were working under his direction when he arrived, but later this was increased by four female technicians. Morris explained this task was before the 231 Isolation Building received its first “feed material from the two canyons [name for the chemical separation plants] where the irradiated uranium was brought by rail from the three ‘piles’ [name of reactors B, D, and F].” This building later called 231-Z was in an area called 200 West. The canyon plants were four miles away from each other for safety reasons. Morris was at the location of the final step of the product extraction process. Still there, Building 231 began a demolition process that will be final in 2025.
The uranium story is a book of its own. If you have made a ski-run down a slope at Telluride, north of Durango, Colorado, it is an hour and a half from Uravan, now a ghost mining town where some of the vanadium tailings containing uranium were refined as a byproduct and sent to Hanford. Ironically, uranium was first discovered by a German scientist, and in Berlin during 1938 the fission process was revealed. Other uranium sources were from an underground mine in Canada and an open air facility in the Belgian Congo. The “Little Boy” bomb dropped on Hiroshima, for example, used the more pure Congolese uranium.
Work went on with plutonium production after the surrender of Japan. Apparently, Morris had troubles retrieving the empty containers from Los Alamos. In late September or in October, the letter told his kids, he traveled to Los Alamos with a Major Valenti. It was probably September because Oppenheimer was meeting with President Harry Truman in late October. That clash is shown in the movie.
Morris wanted the people remaining at Los Alamos to do additional cleaning of the shipments before returning the containers for reuse in Washington State. “I was only the second Hanford DuPonter,” he thought, “to visit Los Alamos.” Hanford’s Technical Director Lom Squires had already been there giving advice on how to expand the plutonium processing capability. After some difficulty being admitted at the guard gate, Morris said he finally met Robert Oppenheimer.
While Oppenheimer left duty at Los Alamos in November 1945 for years of political pressure, ridicule and turmoil, Morris returned to DuPont’s Grasselli Chemicals Department about the same time. After superintending in Cleveland, Ohio’s heavy water production function, and subsequent work at the Dana, Indiana plant, he moved to the Savannah River Laboratory, a site that won over competition with a potential Red River placement in Texas. He was director of separations, then director of reactor engineering and materials, and later in charge of University relations. He retired in 1983. His half-brother Don, a 1950 PHS graduate, was a Navy career deep-sea diver with quick thoughts about the recent submersible that imploded near the Titanic, also worked at the plant, a long way from the Morris home on Bonham Street.
The Class of 1935 held reunions as long as possible. They were fine examples of what could be accomplished from a small town education.'

The Bega Schoolgirls Murders
Tumblr media
14-year-old Lauren Barry and 16-year-old Nichole Emma Collins were Bega High School students and best friends. Their case is often referred to as the Bega Schoolgirls Murders.
On 3rd October 1997, Nichole's father set up a campsite for Nichole to invite her friends to stay at for Labour Day weekend. It was agreed that the girls would regularly call at the house while camping to change their clothes, shower and eat and that Nichole's father would regularly call at the camp to check on the girls. On 5th October at 9 pm, Nichole and Lauren left the campsite to go to a nearby party, the pair walked together along a road. The girls were not seen again and were reported missing the next day.
When the girls had left the party two men, Leslie Camilleri and Linsday Beckett were riding in a car aimlessly nearby. The pair were consuming beer and taking amphetamines. They saw Nichole and Lauren walking and offered them a lift. At around 10 pm after a short conversation, the girls willingly got into the car. A distinctive pink portable television was removed from the back seat of the car and discarded on the side of the road to make room for the girls to sit down.
Rather than give the girls a lift as promised the girls were driven to a rubbish dump and raped. They were then driven further south and repeatedly raped at stop-offs along the journey. The final stop was just south of the Victoria/ New South Wales border. Camilleri ordered the girls to remove their clothing and wash thoroughly in an attempt to get rid of DNA evidence. The girls were then tied and gagged while Camilleri and Beckett discussed what to do next. They argued about who should kill the kills to prevent them from reporting the crime.
Beckett attempted to drown Lauren but struggled, as Lauren tried desperately to get away Beckett was splashed which made him angry. Beckett viciously stabbed Lauren in the neck, killing her. Beckett then ran up the bank to Nichole, who was tied to a tree and out of view from Lauren. Nichole asked if he was going to kill her. Beckett stabbed and slashed Nichole's throat, she did not die and thrashed in pain. Beckett punched and kicked her until she stopped moving.
Camilleri and Beckett then fled the murder scene, burning their blood-stained clothing, gags and ropes. They threw their knives from a bridge and returned home. They spent 6 hours cleaning their car including removing the seats and carpet. Beckett attempted to retrieve the discarded television from where they picked up the girls but could not find it. The television was found by a local council worker and later used as evidence.
On 25th October 1997, police found a car stolen by Beckett and he was arrested. Maps of the Bega area in which the girls were murdered were found along with other items which made police suspect they may have caught Lauren and Nichole's killer. Police interviewed Camilleri the next day. Both men denied any knowledge of the murders.
On 12th November, Beckett made a full confession and agreed to take police to the crime scene and remains of the girls' bodies. Camilleri attempted to insist he was in a drug-induced stupor for the entirety of the time the girls were in the car.
Beckett and Camilleri were both charged with murder, rape and abduction and each sentenced to life imprisonment. Camilleri was later sentenced for another murder, the 1992 killing of 13-year-old Prudence Bird.

The Bega schoolgirl murders, deemed of one of Australia’s most heinous murders, refers to the abduction, rape, and savage murder of 14-year-old Lauren Margaret Barry and her best friend, 16-year-old Nicole Emma Collins. The best friends had planned a camping party at White Rock, a very popular campsite just 1.9 miles from the Collins’ home, for Lauren’s 15th birthday.
Labour Day of 1997 was coming up on the Monday, meaning that they would be off school; they had planned this purposefully so that the camping trip could last all weekend and on to the Monday. The girls promised that they would return home over the weekend to shower, get changed, and eat some food. Their parents agreed, completely oblivious to the horror that was about to unfold. Kids had often camped at White Rock and there had never been any problems and as they believed, it was a safe area. At approximately 9PM on 5 October, the girls walked from the campsite to a nearby party. Along the way, they were approached by Leslie Camilleri and Linday Beckett in their Ford Telstar. The men asked the young girls if they would like a lift to the party they had planned to attend. The girls, tragically, agreed and got into the car. Camilleri suddenly produced a knife and began to threaten the terrified girls - he told them if they kept quiet and complied to what he asked, they would be let go. Lauren and Nicole were then subjected to twelve hours of brutal rapes and assaults.
The girls, seemingly aware of what the outcome was going to be, began to ask if they were going to be murdered and begged for their lives. Camilleri and Beckett told them that they weren’t going to kill them and that they only wanted to tie them up so that they could then escape.
At approximately 8AM the following morning, after driving around aimlessly, while taking turns raping Lauren and Nicole, they finally came to their final stop - Fiddler’s Green Creek. They led the girls to a creek where they forced them to “wash away any evidence,” before tying Nicole to a tree and tying Lauren up and placing her face down on the ground, 30 meters away from one another. The sadistic duo then discussed how they were going to kill the two girls. Beckett first attempted to drown Lauren in the creek that she was tied up beside. Enraged that Lauren had got his jeans wet while he attempted to murder the innocent girl, he produced his knife and stabbed her in the neck, slicing his thumb in the process.
When it became evident that Lauren had perished, Beckett made his way over to Collins. He slashed her throat a number of times and stabbed her in the chest before mercilessly punching and kicking her when it appeared that she was still alive. He later described this callous murder:  “After I stabbed Lauren, I ran up the bank to where I tied Nichole up. She must have heard what I had done to Lauren because when I got to her she said, ‘you’re going to kill me, aren’t you.’ I said ‘shut up’ and walked around to her left side and I cut her throat two or three times. This was across her throat. The knife was in my left hand. Nichole was sitting down when I cut her throat. After this she was thrashing around on the ground. She was trying to scream but nothing was coming out. I think I kicked her because she wouldn’t keep still. And then I put my foot on to her to keep her still. This didn’t work so I stabbed her in the throat. I aimed and stabbed at the hard thing in her neck. I pushed the knife all the way in but she still wouldn’t keep still so I worked out where her heart would be and I stabbed her on the left side of the chest. She still didn’t stop moving so I stabbed her in the front of the chest. I was aiming for her heart. I needed two hands to get the knife through her chest. She kept moving so I kicked her in the head a couple of times. She still kept moving but she was slowing down. I waited until she stopped moving which didn’t take long.”
The ruthless men were quickly apprehended and Beckett made a full confession and took authorities to the bodies of the slain girls. They were both sentenced to life imprisonment.
