we were chatting about Eurovision with @lesbiansandgayssupporttheminers just now and the whole "quashing the diversity of national/regional languages" thing, like how France made such a big deal out of having a song in brezhoneg last year but you'd have to hold them at gunpoint to get songs in the languages they're more actively trying to kill, such as the langues d'oc (occitan, provençal and so on) and basque

anyway we think there should be an alternative non-competitive extravaganza to showcase the endangered languages and we could call it:

lesbiansandgayssupporttheminers is racist; she thinks she understands racism better than poc, stands by racists, and attacks poc for trying to speak to her about racism

For the full story, you first need a bit of background: if you’ve been following me for a while then you will be aware I have called out @ayeforscotland’s racism several times. I would recommend reading this post for a full explanation.

In addition to the incidences mentioned in the post I have just linked, ayeforscotland has also had interactions with neo @androidgynes who is Romani and another person who is black (but didn’t want to be named) and they’ve both also called him out for his racism.

Anyway so. @androidgynes​ saw that lesbiansandgayssupporttheminers was reblogging from ayeforscotland, and that the op of the post was @/getpoliticaluk (who defends incest). Androidgynes messaged lesbiansandgayssupporttheminers (who I will from now refer to as lagstm) and informed her that ayeforscotland is racist and getpoliticaluk defends incest - the conversation that followed went like this. (the below screenshots are posted with permission from @androidgynes​)

The post that neo (@androidgynes) linked of mine was this. And I mean... clearly that particular post by ayeforscotland was very racist, he literally just sat there laughing about anti-black racism as if it was a joke. When @mangopickled​ tried to speak to him about how offensive this post was, he removed her comments from the notes of the post (like. to be clear: ayeforscotland, a WHITE MAN, made a post about racism, and then removed a WOMAN OF COLOUR’S commentary from that post when she told him that his comments were inappropriate). When I saw that, I called that out, and he blocked me. There’s many levels to his racism here that I don’t have the energy to explain, and if you don’t understand why it’s so problematic then you should probably stop reading here cos you clearly know nothing and probably care even less about anti-racism.

So on that particular post that neo linked to lagstm, there is ayeforscotland being racist, and 2 woc calling out his racism. And yet on having this post shown to her, this is how she chose to respond

lagstm literally says that she thinks my views on racism lack nuance. I am a woman of colour, I am visibly muslim, and I’ve experienced racism pretty much all my life. And here is a white woman saying that she thinks my views on racism “lack nuance”. I,, I genuinely don’t have words to convey how angry this makes me. Literally who does she even think she is. Not even is it racist to dismiss my literal LIVED experience of being a woman of colour in this country, but she is literally saying “look at these stupid brown folk, they don’t know what they’re talking about cos they’re so stupid :)”

neo points out firstly that as a white person lagstm doesn’t have the right to make that call, and also that there is ofc another woc on that post saying that exact same thing, and androidgynes themselves are roma. lagstm is not just dismissing me as a stupid savage who is too stupid to form complex thoughts, but she is also indirectly saying the same thing about 2 other poc, and saying that her judgement, as a white person, is more sound than all of ours.

It’s also worth mentioning that neo, who is Romani, was polite to lagstm during this exchange, and lagstm was rude and dismissive. I find this deeply hypocritical. Lagstm has been talking a lot about the policing bill and how it will affect GRT communities, but when she’s talking to someone who is actually *from* the Roma community, she is dismissive and condescending. All this shows is that she’s fake AF. She pretends to care about the Roma community on her blog and then speaks down to them in private.

And again this is worth repeating: AYEFORSCOTLAND WAS BEING RACIST ON THAT POST. IT WAS RACIST. WHAT HE SAID WAS RACIST. So lagstm isn’t just ignoring 3 poc, she is also ignoring,,,, you know,,, the actual racism,,,

And she also says ayeforscotland is borderline racist? Like she acknowledges ayeforscotland is borderline racist but she’s still happy to follow him? Like that alone would be enough for me actually

neo then blocked lagstm and messaged me and told me what happened, and showed me the above screenshots - btw prior to this neo and I had never interacted. Anyway I was obviously a bit disgusted but instead of going straight to blocking lagstm or making a callout post straight away, I messaged her to explain herself and take back what she said. That is now two poc who tried to resolve the matter privately - clearly a lot more than lagstm ever deserved. Androidgynes messaged me last Friday, and I messaged lagstm the next day on Saturday

My convo with lagstm went as follows:

So you can see that initially she was apologetic and said she “didn’t mean to imply that that my judgement on racism was flawed” (even tho that’s literally what she said) and defended herself by saying “I react poorly in interactions like this” - genuinely not a defence but whatever. She then proceeded to say that what she doesn’t trust my opinion on is Scotland and Ireland - which completely irrelevant. Firstly I am ambivalent to Scottish nationalism and have always said I don’t know much about it, and I support the reunification of Ireland. And secondly, my issue with aye has got literally nothing to do with Scotland or Scottish nationalism; he is racist all on his own. And the post neo linked was barely even about scottish nationalism, it was just him being anti-black. So lagstm saying “I don’t trust your judgement on Scotland and Ireland” is ridiculous considering that Scottish/Irish nationalism have nothing to do with this.

Like akjfbkjdfbs this is actually so ridiculous. It doens’t make any sense. Lagstm clearly says “I don’t trust pakisstani’s judgement on THIS issue [the issue being racism] and her views on THIS issue [the issue being racism] lack nuance” but now turns around and says “I wasn’t talking about racism, I was talking about Scotland/Ireland” like she must really think I’m dumb

And you can see Lagstm bringing up unrelated hypothetical scenarios, and saying “in this situation, you can’t tell me to defer to poc” which i found ??? Like why are you bringing up scenarios in which you think you are allowed to educate us poor and stupid black and brown folk?? I then told her she was straw-manning and that her points about Ireland/Scotland were ridiculous, but then she claimed it was me that was engaging her in bad faith. Like SHE, the white woman who practically said that I am too stupid to understand racism, and when confronted on it started straw-manning and bringing up unrelated scenarios, said I am not engaging her in good faith. AFTER both neo and I tried to speak to her privately about this. Like I tried to speak to her privately AFTER I FOUND OUT SHE HAD SAID RACIST THINGS ABOUT ME. BUT I’M NOT ENGAGING HER IN GOOD FAITH? LMAOOO

And then the accusation about rape threats which is actually the most disgusting part of this entire thing. I shouldn’t have to explain that accusing 2 poc of conspiring to send her rape threats (without any evidence whatsoever. Frankly I think she’s lying about the rape threats 🤷🏽‍♀️ it’s quite a transparent attempt to distract from her own nasty behaviour and deflect onto us) is actually extremely racist. She is invoking her white fragility and painting me and androidgynes as aggressors who are threatening her safety and inflicting/threatening to inflict sexual violence on her. It is beyond disgusting 🤮

What’s more, neo is trans, so when lagstm is baselessly accusing them of issues related to rape, she is also playing up to transphobic tropes.

One more thing worth mentioning is that there are several lies peppered throughout lagstm’s comments. Firstly when she claimed to have briefly unfollowed me - she didn’t actually. I was checking regularly, and she never unfollowed me. This was a small lie that I picked up on striaght away but because it wasn’t relevant I didn’t say anything about it. But I just think it’s interesting that she would lie for no reason. And another lie - feigning ignorance about ayeforscotland’s racism, and actually even asking for receipts is incredibly disingenuous when on this particular post, if you scroll through the notes, you can see she has literally liked it. Like she had already seen the posts where me and mangopickled called out his racism and literally LIKED it, and when neo says to lagstm that aye is racist, lagstm says “receipts please :)” YOU’VE ALREADY SEEN THEM! AND LIKED THEM! screenshot in case she unlikes it (sorry for including dumb comments by dumb scots but i need to prove it’s the same post so):

LASTLY. Last point I swear. When lagstm said “it was also coloured by the statements they’d made about another tumblr user, which didn’t relate to racism, which I didn’t address with them because I didn’t want to upset them” <- she must mean getpoliticaluk defending incest? So like what is lagstm saying here, she didn’t want to bring up that she also herself defends incest?? Like is she tryna say she’s a pro-shipping freak?????????????????????? What other way is there to read that statment

I’m not interested in discourse on this post - if you are white and think lagstm isn’t racist or you’re inclined to defend her then save your breath, I don’t need white people telling me what is or isn’t racist. I gave her the chance to defend herself, which is way more than she deserves, and this is how she responds. Her actions and indefensible and she can choke ☺️❤️  I will be unfollowing/blocking anyone I see reblogging from her because I deserve better than to follow people who are ok with racists ❤️

We really have to hand it to kids' drawings. They're like little emotional time bombs, chaotic, pure, and ready to explode with meaning at any second. My son’s masterpiece? It’s got all the feels: hope, resilience, and a superhero vibe that makes you believe a pencil can save the world.

Then there’s my friend’s version, same idea but polished, powerful, and radiating strength and determination. One full of innocence and love, the other showing how far we’ve come in the fight for survival. Together, they remind me that even in the darkest times, there is light.

Maybe these drawings aren’t enough to stop you in your tracks. Maybe they’re not “good enough” to inspire donations or make you share this post. But behind each one, there’s a story of survival, resilience, and unshakable hope. This campaign isn’t just about me. It’s about 26 people, 26 lives hanging by a thread. That includes two orphaned children and a family member who’s suffering from hemiplegia after being hit by shrapnel during a bombing. Do you not recognize the right of choice or are you just a bootlicker LARPing for the aesthetic?

If wanting universal free at the point of use access to healthcare makes me a bootlicker, then call me a bootlicker.

If wanting the people who work in that system to be treated well makes me a bootlicker, then call me a bootlicker.

It doesn't have to be run by the government, indeed we'd all be better off if the NHS was run by the people for the people.

Please rank Harry's music video performances too!

This took a little longer than I expected, because I got distracted.  But I had great fun doing it.  Here is my ranking of many great Harry performances, and some not great ones.

Night Changes: Listen - I know that this is a terrible disaster and almost everything about it is bad.  But in the middle of some of the worst 1D Imagines of all time - Harry is one of the most charming motherfuckers ever recorded on screen.  Yes the video is ridiculous - yes calling it ham on cheese is an understatement - but that’s what makes Harry such a strong music video performer.  He can completely ham it up and his charm still feels very real. 

Adore You: Given a story to tell - Harry can tell a story.  When he captures a scream in a jar you have both a real emotional weight - as well as a performance which fits this heightened world.  It’s really impressive that you have both the charm and joy that comes from Harry’s more hammy performaces, but also a range of emotional responses that really connect.

One Thing: His first verse - he’s making cheesy poses and still manages to exude charm not just through the screen, but out my widow behind me and to the world at large.  Hugely high energy, really easy with the camera and super charming.  

Best Song Ever: Obviously Marcel is a brilliant performance from first to last, with his particular shout out to the way he reacts in the background once Liam as Leeroy comes in. Harry is also good being himself reacting to the absurdity. He does a little bit of that intensity that comes across as anger while he’s actually singing, but in this context it works really well.

Lights Up: I think what’s most impressive about this video is that Harry’s hammy charm is his superpower - and this is a great performance in a very naturalistic video. We get a range of emotions from him - and there’s always that feeling of presence - he’s never just singing. 

What Makes You Beautiful: It’s all there from the beginning: the charm, the ease, the energy. He hasn’t quite learned just how far he can turn the charm up yet, but everything about this works.  With a bonus shout out for his ability to generate chemistry with Maddison. 

Live While We’re Young: It’s a great performance, super charming, super high energy.  And the only reason it’s higher is that with lots of great performances, this video relies less than others on 1D members’ performance, because there’s so much going on.

Kiss You: Another great performance - the whole video is hugely hammy, which plays to Harry’s strengths.  High energy cheese is right in his wheelhouse.  At this point ranking is splitting hairs, but I think you can tell that in this video he was performing all the time, whereas with LWWY there was some actual fun had.

Watermelon Sugar: Harry has to hit quite a narrow target here.  He has to be charming and present, but not at all skeevy.  I think the fact that hte video works (for the people it works for, which does’t include me), is very much down to how well pitched his performance.  He’s present and joyful, but he also allows a lot of space for the women in the video.

Gotta Be You: Proving yet again that Harry can give a good performance in a terrible video - I think this is one of his best performances with a slower song.  He definitely connects with the camera and if he’s not vulnerable he is open.  And there are some real moments of sparkling joy from him by the camp fire.

Little Things: Another good performance in a slow video (probably tied with Gotta Be You honestly - but I am taking into account difficulty.  The director of Little Things really set up a down hill slope for them).  And I think a particularly telling one - because while Harry is very effective when he sings at the camera, most of the footage they included in the video isn’t him singing to camera, but singing slightly off camera. Compare this to Zayn who is singing to camera even in the group shots. Assuming that what we’re seeing is Harry’s best material, it suggests both the range of his performance (he can do many things charmingly), but also possibly that singing to camera was more effective in smaller doses

Kiwi: Harry really commits to every ridiculous thing he does in his short appearance in this video.  His ability to fully comit to the most ridiculous hammy situation (and put his hands over the dogs ears) is an incredibly important music video skill.  I have no criticisms or caveat of his performance this video, but his appearance is short and he’s not called on to do that much.

Story of My Life: Harry’s good in this - don’t get me wrong.  But he’s not jumping through the screen to catch you like he is in some other videos.  Partly it’s the lack of emotional specificity in the song (it’s a song that says ‘feel something’ doesn’t really matter what’), but I also think that the fact that Harry sends emotions out, rather than inviting the audience in works less well on slow songs in general. 

You and I: I think this is a really good example of how much goes into a good music video performance.  Because Harry is very naturalistic - there’s nothing awkward about what he’s doing and that’s really important.  And you see his charm enliven the video as soon as they start interacting with each other.  But when he’s singing to camera, he’s not letting the audience into his world and his feelings. 

Steal My Girl: There are moments in here.  He’s very good when Danny Devito is giving them different attributes.  There’s one moment in an edited montage after he comes out of the door in the sky where it seems like he’s feeling something.  But these flashes aren’t really enough. There’s nothing Harry is trying to communicate with this performance - he’s singing while wearing a coat, but there’s no there there.

Perfect: More proof that being charming while hamming it up is Harry’s super power - and that moments where he’s playing around in the corridor are one of the highlights of the video.  He’s also engaged with Harry Lambert - and it shows. But when Harry’s singing to camera there’s either nothing there or it’s that intensity that reads of anger (which connects with this song even less than most).

Drag Me Down: Everything with the robot is perfect. But there’s so much shouting at the camera as if that’s emoting (it was watching this video that I realised that Harry had serious weaknesses as a video performer.  His strength in early videos had stopped me from really thinking about it).

History: The problem with this video is that I’m not counting any of the charming footage.  So instead we just have them singing in front of a brick wall wanting to be done.  I do find it itneresting that Harry’s not charming, because he hams it up a bit and he’s usually charming, but I think that’s just a sign of how exhausted they all were.

Sign of the TImes: I’m sure it’s hard to act while dangling from a bit of wire (and even harder to act when it’s not you but a dummy or a stunt double in a you facemask), but in order for this video to work Harry would have had to have nailed the emotional arc of this video - and he doesn’t.  There isn’t an emotional arc. The video is almost six minutes long and he communicates a feeling of joy just before the three minute arc - and apart from that there’s nothing.  He’s just standing on an island singing, and dangling off a rope singing - there’s no connection, no emotion and no vulnerability.

Midnight Memories: This is such a bad video (and turns out no matter how angry you are at someone for voting for Boris Johnson, it’s always possible for that anger to double).  And Harry’s performance in it is bad.  There’s one moment of sparkle when they’re on the bridge where he looks geuinely happy, but otherwise there’s no life or charm in him at all (actually the ‘call me’ bit with the old lady also works).  At the beginning, as he goes through the party and and is supposed to be telling a story you can see him acting in the most cog turning way.  And after that it’s just someone singing while looking slightly intense.  He’s so good at hammy fun and there’s none of this in this performance.

Falling: It’s bad enough to have hardly any emotional reaction to flying - to have no emotional reaction to being submerged in water is absurd. There’s emotional intensity there, but no specificity.  Lots of his performance reads as angry to me, but not in a way that suggests that that’s what he was going for.  Without vulnerability nothing else hits. So much effort for a video that has no emotional core or connection (and is also very ugly apart from Harry Lambert’s contributions).

Three ships: I don’t think I become invested in media in this way. I generally strongly support queerships that are sort of obvious but canonically unconfirmed, especially when they eventually are written in. Like I was a strong advocate for Harley/Ivy probably since the ‘90s. Or Chandra/Nissa, even though I don’t exactly love those characters. Garak/Bashir is fun. Samus/Peach is cute. Tifa/Aerith/Cloud thruple is yes. I feel like Frodo/Sam is essentially just canon.

Last song: I think probably ‘Blues At Midnight’ by Sun Ra and his Arkestra, but I've been listening to a lot of Béla Bartók’s European folk dances on solo piano (so maybe ‘Este a Székelyeknél’) and Itzhak Perlman’s klezmer (so maybe ‘אַלע ברידער’ or some fuckin’ freilech).

Last movie: Cry Of The City starring Victor Mature and Richard Conte. It was fucking rad, mate. It’s possible I put on some Miyazaki film (probably Laputa or Mononoke) to fall asleep to after that, but I don’t remember and if so I only saw the first few minutes before drifting off anyway.

Currently reading: Idk I’ve started The Castle Of Otranto like five times at this point. I was (re-)reading a bit of Black Skin White Masks earlier today. I wanna finally read something by Ursula K. Le Guin, probably The Dispossessed, but maybe The Left Hand Of Darkness or A Wizard Of Earthsea. Also just got Enemies: A Love Story and The Magician Of Lublin by Isaac Bashevis Singer, so may start them. I recently downloaded PDFs of Castle In The Air by Diana Wynne Jones and The Hellbound Heart by Clive Barker, so I may just settle on one of those.

Currently watching: In between things. Recently watched the second season of Picard (about which I have mixed feelings). Tried watching The Chemistry Of Death but was unmotivated to continue past the first couple episodes (it had pros and cons).

Currently consuming: At any given moment I probably have a cup of coffee (during daylight hours) or tea (after dark) at hand. Most tea I drink these days is oolong or green.

Currently craving: I think I often crave bed even when I’m in bed.

Ultimately the debate over changing the minds of our oppressors with angry words versus kind words is meaningless because it rests on the assumption that people in power will be swayed by words at all. In reality, people who have power over you have limitless ways of tuning you out or reinterpreting your words to death. It's often the case that they won't actually hear you unless there are material consequences for not doing so.

Hang on, Jolyon Maugham is a foxhunter? I mean I knew he was a twat, who a lot of people seem to laud, but I didn't realise that. I mean, it's not a surprise, he's a posh cunt as you say.

He's not a fox hunter, but last year or so he tweeted about a fox getting into his back garden and him going out and battering it to death with a bat while wearing a dressing gown. So since then everyone has called him fox basher or similar.

5. kids! i love working with kids and looking after them. i'm looking after a friend's two-year-old one morning a week and he's Awesome. i'm also a teacher and i love seeing the eureka moment when my kids get a concept for the first time. i honestly can't wait to be a parent someday :D
