A Ghost Train and The Apparition of Classism

The most iconic scene of the Warriors 1979 is their train ride home Coney Island.

The most striking scene during this series of events is when a group of yuppie prom kids enter the train and sit across the Warriors.

We as an audience are made to compare and contrast between these two groups with one being the golden standard and the other being less than ideal.

Ultimately, the Teens are supposed to be a reflection of what the Warriors could have been if they got their lives together.

" Maybe they could have been coming back from a night of fun instead of barely surviving the night if they were on the right track"

The concept album not only flips this on its head, but flat-out rebukes the conclusion the film came to .

The Same Train Home is not only one of the most beautiful songs in the entire album, but ties together all of the themes regarding social hierarchy, unification, classism, and bigotry that Cyrus talked about to come to a more radical notion

The song (as many before me have pointed out) basically frames the subway as a metaphor for the afterlife and makes the assertion that "death comes for us all and it is the great equalizer"

There are several different characters all from different social classes present .

The Warriors- an all-female gang of color who are still rationalizing the intense misogyny and trauma they've been forced to endure.

A Single Mother- who's performing a song in her native language for change with her baby strapped to her back.

Then there's the after mention Rich Kids who just got back from their luxurious night and spend most of the song judging the Warriors but particularly Mercy based off of the fact that she .... Exist I guess?

You may notice that the song spends an awful lot of time on these snotty brats, but this is no mere coincidence.

This is what we call in writing The Man behind The Man.

These arrogant teenagers are a representation of the social elites that uphold the system that causes police like Barnes and Victor to run loose and use whatever means necessary to crush those beneath them to uphold a pseudo vision of paradise for them.

In some ways this is the Warriors staring the true villains of the entire album right in the face.

They're completely unaware of the trouble people like them cause for society and are more fascinated by the fact that they're in the presence of marginalized people and are probably annoyed because of it

That's where everything sort of comes together.

The reason this ethereal vibe we get isn't just because this is the same track where Captain Victor brutally murdered Fox, but it shows that life nor death discriminate.

It doesn't matter whether you were born into a marginalized community or a more privileged one we are all going to need the same fate eventually.

Moreover, this completely vindicates Cyrus's message from the beginning of the album and shows just how fruitless the actions of the police and even Luther were.

It doesn't matter how many artificial doors the system and the elites that perpetuated try to manufacture to keep marginalized communities down, they're still are going to have to leave their comfort zones and acknowledge that different walks of life exist whether they want you or not.

All things must live in Union and trying to fight that is pretty much like fighting death because regardless of if you accept it it will happen regardless of your opinion.

On that note, Mercy starts to become insecure because of all of the rude gawking the teenagers are giving her and it starts to make her feel very uncomfortable.

That's when Swan delivers a passionate lesbian kiss that's been foreshadowed since they met in orphan town.

This moment is pretty significant because I need to remind you'll that this is the 1970s!

A period that modern-day conservatives uphold as being the pinnacle of the golden era.

Where things like queerness and "Wokeism" didn't exist yet all of us know that this was never true and classist hoods are forced to engage with the fact that there are identities that exist outside of their privilege bubbles and it's pretty good writing all around.

Classism is essentially a Scooby-Doo like phantom that we as a society are forced to believe in because people with billions of dollars tell us to and they try to spend a narrative that fits lower class people against each other when really nothing truly separates us.

All of these characters regardless of where they came from are all on a train going to their set destinations and at least for the teenagers this is probably the only time they've seen more than one black or brown person in their entire lives.

It's probably up there as one of my favorite moments in the entire album this for how it kind of makes me rethink everything that's happened so far.

Aza Brothers

It seems obvious to me that Toma and Chobei have a love-romantic relationship, at least there are hints of it in the manga, especially in the second half part (which should be in the second season of the anime, I hope these moments will be in the anime too).

There is also a chapter that was not included in the manga/anime, for some reason the author was afraid to include these moments, but there is a DVD, in the form of a story that is read by the voice actors of the characters. The story is dedicated to two couples, the first is Gabimaru and his wife, and the second pair is Toma and Chobei, where Toma's feelings for Chobei are revealed, memories of their life together, as well as their time spent on the island. "How much does a younger brother feel for his older brother? As Chobei and Toma spend their time alone together in Shinsenkyo (Divine Paradise), Toma's devotion is on full display - and explodes. From bedding to meal preparation, his overflowing talent realizes the ultimate in “hospitality.

This is the story of two brothers who have never been told."

- (From a cut episode that was not included in the manga and anime, but which was written by the creator Yuji Kaku himself; Toma tells a small story about the days he and his older brother, Aza Chobei, have spent together since childhood, told from Toma's point of view.

It is obvious that the author intentionally draws parallels between these two couples, Gabimaru and his wife, and Toma with Chobei. A hint that their feelings are similar.

They don't have an overtly sexual tone, both couples are depicted chastely, however, there may be a romantic subtext implied. Especially considering the overall narrative of the story. Dark fantasy with erotic horror elements.

Another moment, Chobei compared his relationship with Toma to that of Ju Fa and Tao Fa, but with the difference that he let go of Toma because if he kept holding him tightly, Toma would break, but Ju Fa couldn't let go of Tao Fa, and that's what ruined them... because they didn't learn to be independent from each other in order to survive and help each other. While Toma learned to be independent, and that's how he was able to save Chobe and they are back together. But also, considering that Ju Fa and Tao Fa are partners and siblings... there are similarities with the Aza brothers.

In the manga, almost the entire story is permeated with sexuality, the tensens have sex and orgies for the sake of ritual or pleasure, the tensens seduce Chobei into sex, the monsters and doshin do the same, and commit sexual violence against the heroine Mei, other human characters are also shown in a sexual manner, there is Yuzuriha who tries to seduce everyone (as a manipulation and a weapon), there is a cannibal prostitute who tried to seduce blind samurai Shion, there is an bisexual samurai Jikka, a lecher who sleeps with different random men and women in the manga (this is shown) and he flirts with all the other characters, also, there is a hint of a lesbian relationship between Yuzuriha and Sagiri, they hug, kiss, and the author even drew such art... it is clearly gay. https://x.com/D_Kumii/status/1561352479744200705/photo/2

Even the most explicit couple of Ju Fa and Tao Fa look less suggestive (I mean, panels outside of bochu-jutsu):

Brutal samurai Gantetsusai also flirts with various characters, he is basically a womanizer and he constantly looks at girls, and when he sees Toma, who is a boy but very feminine, he also shows interest in him, calling him "pretty boy" all the time and wants to put him in a sexy dress (Toma later became his student, but he snapped every time if Gantetsusai flirted with him. Toma hated people, he only loved his brother, but for his brother's sake he agreed to cooperate with the rest of the team). Toma is so effeminate that he is called girl and ma'am a couple of times.

And there is Shija, a gender-neutral ninja who is passionately in love with Gabimaru, and wants to be in his wife's place.

Considering all this, and the author's boldness in depicting various forms of love and sexuality, as well as the popularity of brocon in Japanese media, I'm not surprised that Toma and Chobei's relationship is or potentially romantic. There are many hints to this. First, they are together all the time and dependent on each other, they are orphans who grew up in a house of all male bandits in the forest, in the manga it is said that they did not consider the bandits as their comrades, and were isolated from them and cooperate only for crime. Chobei did everything to protect Toma, even if it means challenging the gods and death itself, defeating the transformation into a monster and all for the sake of one person, and Toma was very dependent on Chobei and love him with all his heart.

"...because, while I'm a part of you… …you are everything to me." -Toma to Chobei. Look at the moment when Toma says these words. When Chobei, having lost himself, pierced Toma's body with his vines, and Toma was not sure whether he would survive, but he told him the most important thing for him, so Chobei remembered himself again and his beloved brother. (by the way, piercing also has erotic symbolism… just say)

Toma also admires Chobei's appearance.

It is said that Toma cooked food and prepared a bed for Chobei (basically he acted as his "wife"). People often think that Toma is a girl, in fact, he is a boy.

And he is very beautiful, and in order to preserve Toma's beauty, Chobei sacrificed his own beauty by disfiguring himself in front of the bandits who wanted to disfigure Toma. The bandits admired Chobei's courage and did not touch Toma.

The second hint, when Chobei was captured by the Tensen, and his brother's life (and everyone on the island and beyond) was on the line, Chobei agreed to have sex with the main Tensen Rien, and when he had sex, he thought of Toma. Toma is his top priority.

Secondly, when Rien (who is also a hermaphrodite) was riding Chobei, Chobei said "I'm not a fan of riding" and sat on top of Rien, so Chobei is clearly not a virgin if he has a preference in sexual position, and the question arises who he could have sex with, there was no one near him except Toma. Scary and ugly bandits do not count.

Next, Tao Fa, who is clearly fall in love/passion with Chobei from the very beginning, tried to seduce Chobei, but Ju Fa, Tao Fa's partner, got angry and jealous, to which Chobei said that he does it already (sex ritual), like, he does not like it. Tao Fa was upset, and Ju Fa suddenly changed and asked, is Tao Fa not good enough for Chobei? To which Chobei was perplexed: What do you actually want from me?!

Later, when Chobei was participating in the Tensen initiation ceremony, and when all the Tensen were in male form, Tao Fa thought that maybe he could seduce Chobei in male form. He thought that Chobei liked men?

But Chobei was only thinking about Toma, how to protect and save him, that Toma was his top priority. After reuniting with his brother, they had a fight with the Tensen, then Toma asked Chobei what he did with the Tensen, Chobei honestly answered that he had sex with one, and that they then cut it into pieces for experiments. Toma looked upset-scared-confused...

But Toma is so loving, he trusts his brother completely and believes in his plan. Whatever Chobei does, he is always right. At that very moment, lost, grieving, broken by fate and alone, Toma entrusted himself completely to his brother.

Years after us there are waves of demonstrations to fight off the Occupation, the pollution the military leaves behind, the leftover bombs. What we see that day when we drive south to have lunch in Esperanza is graffiti on the sea wall: U.S. Out!

On the way back to our refuge, we see another whitewashed cement wall by the road, with all the animals painted, jumping out of a cerulean blue wheel of constellations, a whale, a dolphin, an eagle, a panther and the wild, wild whirling arms of the little pulpo.”]
