Currently obsessed with Henri Toulouse-Lautrec and wanted to do something in a slightly similar style.
She’s probably standing on a stool or something dude I don’t know. Erik is tall. (scary fella) Don’t ask me anything, I need to be self indulgent 🫣

Old person smell sadly, rosin (I don't know but that makes sense in my head), iron, pepper(?), some type of overpriced cologne he'd use to overpower it.
Probably a weird combination of things. Old person smell & iron are the reason for him 'smelling like death'.. imo.
phantom fandom if i was making a candle inspired by Erik what do you think he would smell like (he’s NOT STINKY and i stand by that)
old paper for sure but what else

shoutout to the time a few summers ago when i went to Paris, basically lived in the Palais Garnier for a week, and snuck into Box 5.
i walked up to the door of Box 5 that day, and saw it was open! the staff must have forgotten to close the door after cleaning. back in the early 2000s, the Palais Garnier administration put a plaque on the inside and outside of La loge n°5 that reads "Loge du Fantôme de l'Opéra". it is officially Erik's Box.
Tumblr media
here's what Erik's plaque on Box 5 looks like from the outside. note all the fingerprints from phans (some of which are mine).
Tumblr media
here's where Box 5 sits in the auditorium. contrary to popular belief, Erik didn't choose the Emperor's Box (the large, ornate box close to the stage) or even the box next to it. Erik chose the plain box on the other side of the column. Erik is Emperor's Box-adjacent. he's gotta keep some semblance of humility!
Tumblr media
i immediately went and sat in Erik's seat (the second seat on the left side of Box 5). i also knocked on the column, like Gaston Leroux instructed us to do. the marble column itself appears to be solid, but the metal base is hollow. (Leroux claimed this was where Erik hid when he performed his ventriloquist tricks, like making poor Carlotta croak like a toad)
Tumblr media
this is the view of the stage from Box 5 (what Erik would have seen when he watched Christine perform)...
Tumblr media
aaand here's Erik's view of the chandelier, as he dreamed of dropping it on the audience... ("Erik no! don't do it!" –the Daroga, probably)
Tumblr media
aaaaaand then shortly after this, security came and chased us out... au revoir, Erik!

Charles Dance/Yeston & Kopit Concept Makeup
Phantom Cosplay & Makeup Application: @phantomonabudget
Prosthetic: @dyadmufx
This is my first interpretation of what Erik (The Phantom) might have looked like in the 1990 miniseries adaptation of the Yeston and Kopit stage show. This version is quite famous for never showing Erik's face. Instead, we are left with only clues to his actual appearance. I imagine that decision was made as often the imagination can co.e up with far worse possibilities than whatever they would have out on camera. Still...it's fun to try.
Makeup Design
There are few clues or hints in the movie to build upon. We know the eyes are sunken in due to the eye shadow applied to the actor, Charles Dance. We know that the mouth, jaw, and skin around the edge of the face appear to be unaffected. And when pressed about his appearance, Erik says only: "I have no face. I have only the semblance of a face...and no one should have to look at it."
So...not exactly descriptive, and leaves a lot of room for interpretation.
Given the visual clues (or lack thereof), we know the middle of the face is the only area affected and it is completely covered by the mask. I chose to use a beautiful, foam latex base prosthetic appliance by DYAD FX. I kept the skin tone similar to that of the mouth and around the face, but carefully and thinly layered colors from my alcohol activated pallettes to give the effect of a very thin, pinkish tone to the area. I painted in veining to further the effect of the thinned out skin.
...No Nose??
I wanted to give the illusion of not having a nose (or at least that he was losing his). This is certainly the holy grail of Phantom visual design for most Phans, as we have truly only seen one makeup design faithful to the original Gaston Leroux novel...and that was Lon Chaney nearly 100 years ago! So I wanted to try to incorporate that element into this design.
However, it is impossible to eliminate the nose using makeup alone, as effects makeup is additive, not subtractive. Meaning, we add things like prosthetic appliances to the skin to create an effect, but can't take away what the person naturally has. Any time you see a missing nose in film and TV, it is removed using visual/digital effects (VFX). Oftentimes, VFX compliments a prosthetic effects makeup design (like Red Skull in the Marvel movies). It is possible to hide the nose under surrounding prosthetics, but in my opinion, that is usually not successful for realism. Adding more material under/around the nose makes the end result look more simian (ape-like) than just a human without a nose.
To allude to this effect, I instead painted the majority of my nose dark to appear like a cavity, and left the tip of the nose. I felt it gave a better and more realistic overall look. It simply suggests the nose is missing (or soon to be completely missing) instead of trying to physically bury the nose in a ton of material.
Overall, I'm happy with this first attempt but can already think of changes I'd like to make. I enjoyed this and look forward to doing more interpretations of classic Phantoms, to include a Gaston Leroux concept makeup in the near future!

ERIK’S DESIGNS 1/5
As I gear up to launch my adaptation of "Phantom" on Webtoons, I'm thrilled to share my conceptual sketches with you.  Today, it's the man, the myth, the legend, Erik: The Phantom of the Opera himself!
Inspired by the Susan Kay book, I've delved into Erik's facial development from childhood to adulthood, considering how his deformity might evolve with age and hormonal changes. One unique feature is his darkly tinted fingers, indicating chronic poor blood circulation due to Raynaud’s. His facial deformity is based on the Phandom theory that Erik was born with congenital Syphilis, a concept I want to explore in the series (as well as Erik being on the ASD spectrum, inspired by Ramin Karimloo’s characterization.)
I've experimented with various interpretations of his deformity, balancing accuracy to Gaston Leroux's novel while allowing him the ability to convey nuanced levels of emotion.
Plus, a sneak peek at my version of Christine Daaé—stay tuned for her full reveal in the next post!

Oh, that's a very good idea! I had never thought about it! I always assume Leroux just looked at a literal corpse and said "what if a living man was born looking like that?", but it’s very likely that he did get inspiration from real life deformities/diseases.
COMPLETELY random thought about POTO but I was cross referencing vintage photos of syphilis progression for writing purposes- obviously when the book was written little was known of the disease and its affects other than that it could eventually lead to death- given Erik's description do you think it's possible Leroux was imagining a syphilis victim who got it from his mother in-uturo? It accounted for high infant deformality at the time.
Probably not, and he was just imagining a deformed person because that was OH SO SCARY back then it was a thought that crossed my mind.

Fan-(Voice) Casting Leroux's "The Phantom of the Opera"
I've been thinking a lot lately about how in the past 115 years we've never gotten a faithful film adaptation of Leroux's novel. But I believe technology has advanced far enough for CG artists to make the Living Corpse a reality. Personally, I see the character of Erik as taking an amalgam of artists to bring to life (much like Darth Vader) - an actor to perform him physically, CGI artists to accurately capture his likeness and enhance the acting, and another performer to provide his voice. Based on Leroux's novel, how do you imagine Erik's voice? If you were to cast someone for the vocal performance, who in your opinion who would fit that voice best? Is there an artist (present or past) that is comparable?

Opera Garnier where Phantom is based off of in Gaston Leroux's book. The chandelier did fall in the late 1800’s. Other accounts state it was one of the counter weights and not the chandelier. There’s many variations of Erik’s origin but Christine was based off a Swedish singer of the same 1st name.

i swear im alive (I wish I wasn't after drawing this) hah
drew this based of the part in the leroux novel where erik plays desomonda on the harp for christine until she falls asleep (thank @or-what-you-will for the idea)
(also this was initially drawn with christine, uh, not in a chemise so that's a fun fact)
