Robert Mitchum and Jane Russell in His Kind of Woman (John Farrow, 1951)
Cast: Robert Mitchum, Jane Russell, Vincent Price, Tim Holt, Charles McGraw, Marjorie Reynolds, Raymond Burr, Leslye Banning, Jim Backus, Philip Van Zandt, John Mylong, Carleton G. Young. Screenplay: Frank Fenton, Jack Leonard. Cinematography: Harry J. Wild. Production design: J. McMillan Johnson. Film editing: Frederic Knudtson, Eda Warren. Music: Leigh Harline.
His Kind of Woman starts out as a tough-talking film noir and ends up as a knockabout action comedy. The credit or blame for that belongs to Howard Hughes, the RKO studio head and executive producer, who waited until John Farrow had finished the movie and then had Richard Fleischer re-shoot it, even recasting the villain, originally played by Lee Van Cleef, with Raymond Burr. The New York Times reviewer hated it, partly because of the shift in tone, but most people like it. Robert Mitchum and Jane Russell were never going to outdo Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall in dialogue like "They tell me you killed Ferraro. How did it feel?" "He didn't say." But they're good enough at it that they give the movie a core that the flurry of oddball characters and the loony setup for the plot needs. Vincent Price is wonderful as an Errol Flynnish movie star who spouts tags from Shakespeare as he joins Mitchum in taking on the bad guys. Hughes made sure that Russell's gowns, designed by Howard Greer, were as revealing as possible, and Mitchum spends a lot of the film without his shirt, looking a little thick in the waist to contemporary viewers used to gym-toned physiques. The end product probably wasn't worth the money Hughes lost on it, but it's still fun.

I started my House re-watch, want a preview of the first three episodes of season 1???
Season One (or: I don’t remember Wilson looking like such a baby the first time I saw this how old is Robert Sean Leonard in season one? THIRTY-FIVE?? FUCK)
In “Pilot” (or “Everybody Lies” if you’re feeling frisky) there’s not much going on in Vicodin Land. Our acetaminophen dose ranges from 1500-2250 mg. Boring.
“Paternity,” again, acetaminophen 1000-1500 mg.
Oh, “Occam’s Razor.” Dosage of acetaminophen is 1500-2250 mg, but this is our first medication tangent. Colchicine toxicity! Did you know the FDA told drug companies to stop manufacturing unapproved injectable colchicine in 2008?(1) Because I didn’t! There is no antidote for colchicine toxicity, it’s all supportive treatment. When I was re-watching this episode, I actually thought they confused colchicine for digoxin which I thought was weird because I feel like digoxin is so well known. But it turns out there is experimental colchicine-specific antibodies, but they’re not commercially available.(2) How did you get them, House? How did you get them so quickly?? Literally there is one published case report where they used Fab fragments for colchicine toxicity and it was published in 1995.(3) One patient! Nine years before this episode aired!

Eponymous Band Leader, Session Man and “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” Singer Charlie Daniels Dead at 83
Charlie Daniels, the session man turned County Music Hall of Famer best known for “The Devil Went Down to Georgia,” died suddenly July 6 of a stroke, according to an announcement on his website.
Daniels was 83.
“Tragic news,” Hank (Williams) 3 wrote on Facebook. “Charlie was a true legend and patriot. Deepest condolences to his family and all those touched by his music and actions.”
The Academy of Country Music mourned the multi-instrumentalist as one of the genre’s “greatest giants,” while Ricky Skaggs called Daniels “one of my favorite people on this earth.”
“Oh, how he will be missed at the Grand Ole Opry and everywhere else he was loved,” Skaggs tweeted.
“Charlie, thank you for all of the music and joy you’ve given us,” the Opry tweeted.
Before launching his eponymous Band, Daniels worked as a session musician, playing guitar and bass on Bob Dylan’s Nashville Skyline, New Morning and Self Portrait albums, contributing to Ringo Starr’s 1970 country record Beaucoups of Blues and working with Leonard Cohen, the Marshall Tucker Band and others.
Tumblr media
Daniels had his biggest success in 1979 with “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” and hosted a series of mammoth Volunteer Jam concerts between 1974 and 1996.
In a tweet, Country Music Hall of Fame CEO Kyle Young called the 2016 inductee “a reverential innovator” and summed up Daniels’ career thusly:
“His music fused the immediacy of Southern Rock with the classic country storytelling he heard as a child. He brought new audiences to country music, pointing people to the sources even as he explored the edges."
Tumblr media
“He was a maverick,” Wynonna tweeted.
A “heartbroken” Jason Aldean eulogized the man he called “Mr. Charlie” as “one of the nicest/kindest people I have ever met.”
“I grew up on his music - brilliant songs and smokin' records,” Tim McGraw tweeted.
“And always, without fail, every time I had the pleasure of being around him, he was one of most genuine, kind and thoughtful folks I've ever run across.”

A Da Vinci Birthday Anniversary
Italian artist, engineer, scientist, and Renaissance polymath Leonardo da Vinci was born 568 years ago today on April 15, 1452. In commemoration we present a few pages from our facsimile of Da Vinci’s Madrid Codices, published in New York by McGraw-Hill in 1974. The codices consist of two volumes of manuscript notes discovered in the Biblioteca Nacional de España in Madrid in 1965 that include such topics as mechanics, statics, geometry, and the construction of fortifications, and also displays his famous mirror writing. Codex I was finished during 1490 and 1499, and II from 1503 to 1505. The last two images are from Codex II and show a plan for the head of Leonardo’s Sforza monument and a map of Pisa and its surroundings showing plans for water diversions.
Happy Birthday Anniversary Leonard Da Vinci!

The Narrow Margin (1952). A woman planning to testify against the mob must be protected against their assassins on the train trip from Chicago to Los Angeles.
This is a fun little cat and mouse movie, with some great framing and set-ups. It utilises it’s premise fully, and it makes for a tense, dramatic crime thriller that works more often than it doesn’t. 7/10.

Leonard Maltin and Jerry Beck kicked me into my cartoon future.
I’ve written before about the watch that led me to Hanna-Barbera, but never how Leonard Maltin and Jerry Beck kicked me headlong into the cartoon business to begin with, even though we’d never met.
There are music nerds, football nerds, art nerds, computer nerds. But me, I’m a media nerd. Even when I was sure that my path was to become a chemist, I was a devouring all the reading I could about various parts of the media business. Geoffrey Stokes’ “Star Making Machinery” deconstructed what major record companies did to rock bands, David Halberstam’s “The Powers That Be” about print and broadcast giants, Todd Gitlin’s “The Whole World is Watching: The Making and Unmaking of the New Left,”  Timothy Crouse’s “The Boys on the Bus” tracking the reporters on a political campaign were just four among many I devoured.
But most of them were pretty serious. So, it was with a relaxed joy that I fell into “Of Mice and Magic: A History of American Animated Cartoons.“
(*In the first edition, Jerry Beck is on the title page as Research Associate, but Amazon has him listed as an author too.)
When I was a kid, I devoured cartoons. Any kind at any time. 6 in the morning, old, crummy Farmer Gray silents with a ticky-tacky soundtrack. As the day progressed it was Heckle & Jeckle or the original Mighty Mouse from Terrytoons, maybe Woody Woodpecker or Popeye. Later on it could be Crusader Rabbit or the endless great loops of Looney Tunes or Tom & Jerry. As the years went by the H&B greats of The Huckleberry Hound Show (one of my favorites), Quick Draw McGraw, Yogi, Top Cat, Magilla Gorilla, the entire pre-Flinstones gang.
Other than my total and immersive delight in those days before rock’n’roll, I knew absolutely nothing about them. Little did I know that those years were a complete cultural education in some of the greatest comedy films of all time.
Leonard’s and Jerry’s book filled in hundreds of gaps in my knowledge base. I won’t bore you with the details (I’ll post the table of contents below to give you an idea of what’s there), but suffice it to say that I got a total dose of what made the cartoon business famous around the world. It was a snapshot of the creative chaos by which Walt Disney and everyone else from the Warner Bros. gang to Hanna & Barbera ignited their explosions.
What does this have to do with me? You know how it’s said that “a little knowledge is a dangerous thing?” Well, that’s me. If I think I know a little something, if I’m not careful, it can explode into a very big something. Like me and cartoons.
When I read the book I was already a media professional, having spent time in radio and television programming, dipping my toe into graphics animation for MTV and Nickelodeon branding. So I started asking some of my animation friends a little more about what they knew about the cartoon side of animation. When the programming heads of Nickelodeon asked me to help them figure out an original cartoon strategy for the channel –up until then all their animated shows were licensed, like Belle & Sebastian, Danger Mouse, and Yogi Bear– I didn’t really know anything other than what I read in “Of Mice and Magic.” They didn’t seem to care.
So I started pontificating about the explosively creative era of theatrical shorts. “Yeah, that’s what you need to do. Shorts! Just like the great old days!”
The Nick folks sort of agreed, but they interpreted my suggestions differently than I meant them. Their takeaway was that the industry generally didn’t do pilots, so if Nick did pilots they could test them and improve them. I hated –I still hate– pilots. From my perspective, a pilot is something only an executive sees, which they can then opinionate on and change if they feel like it. A pilot doesn’t give the filmmaker the right juice, the feeling of true creative risk that only comes when you know an audience will have their chance to judge. Just like what happened with the great theatricals back in the day.
Look, Nickelodeon did better than OK with their approach. They got Ren & Stimpy, Rugrats and Doug, right out of the box. Not too shabby a start.
But me? I was ticked off and held it in until I got offered the Hanna-Barbera gig by Turner’s Scott Sassa. Honestly, if I hadn’t been so annoyed I might have never taken the job. Seriously. Damn it, I wanted to prove that I was right! So I went West, launched “What A Cartoon!” and my life has never been the same. In so many ways, that’s all thanks to Leonard and Jerry. Thanks guys!

Training
Tumblr media
Characters: Richard Madden x Reader Warning: Smut A/N: my first shot at smut and hopefully I don’t make you cringe... just enjoy and the song goes with the write ok enjoy ;)
Summary: You and Richard become co-stars for a new upcoming action film where you both agreed on doing your own stunts and with doing your own stunts, comes a ton of training time aka your time to stare at the jaw-dropping body of your lovely co-star and after all the trainers leave you two alone, some things lead to another
-- Your POV
Rigs, hoists, flips, jumps, parkour, you name it, the trainers were probably having me do.
“I guess my years as a failed Olympic gymnast are finally paying of,” I laugh as I practice my back tucks and then pretending to high kick someone.
One of our trainers, Pat, laughed, “I guess so, we just need to make those movements more fluid. After your tuck, bounce into the kick, don’t pause then kick. Just kick.”
I nod, going again and again until Pat was satisfied with my landing. Moving on to more contact stunting, Pat pairs me up with a couple of our stuntmen and I begin to practice sparring. This movie followed a highly-trained criminal teaming up with a secret service agent and blah blah blah, don’t want to give too much away. And with my character being the secret service agent, I had to be fit and able to do the defense training an agent would do.
Grunts escape from my mouth as I kick and punch as if these two stuntmen were coming at me for my life. I practiced taking a gun out of their hands and unloading the gun, not the easiest thing to do. And Pat begins to clap, “My my my, y/n you’ve truly have become kickass at this whole stunt game.”
I couldn’t help but smile. It was about two months in training and the long-awaited words came out of Pat’s mouth, “I think its time to put you and Madden up to the test.”
It was nerve-racking. Richard has been in way more of these type of things as this is my first big gig. Not to mention, Richard is absolutely gorgeous. Richard and I only met up for script reasons and chemistry tests, so I guess you can say this is where the real fun begins.
Pat and I continue to practice with the rigs and me being launched into the air as the doors to the gym swing open and there he was. Richard and Leonard, our other trainer, come walking in as I do one last pretend explosion run.
“Atta kid!” I hear Leonard say as I finish the stunt, “it was only last month you hated doing those y/n!”
“Hey, Leonard! And I know right, the things progress does.” I laugh as I detach myself from the rig, “Are you ready for this Richard?”
Caught completely off guard, Richard just smiles and nods.
-- Richard’s POV
Dear God, she’s breath-taking. How is it possible for someone to look THAT attractive whilst sweating and yanked by a rig? And I’ll be acting beside her for the next two months, fuck me.
“Are you ready for this, Richard?” I hear her say and all I could do is just nod and smile like a dummy, what the fuck is wrong with you? She’s just another co-star.
Before I set my things down I check my phone seeing another text from Taron: Rich, you just need to suck it up and ask her dinner after your training! I believe in you!
Ok, I think I could do it. Ok. Ok.
Fuck me.
-- Your POV
Pat and Leonard set up the scenario where Richard’s character and mine meet for the first time and my character attacks him, as he’s an enemy in the beginning. Pat and Leonard demonstrate and Richard and I observe, “Fairly easy. Let’s do this.”
We set up the scene, my back facing Richard and Richard opposite of me. Then, Richard begins to recite his lines, “Hello? Anyone in here? I’m Trevor Card and I-” His line gets cut off by me screaming, running full force at him.
“Wait for a second! This is a misunderstanding! I’m not-” Richard continues in character. I tackle him to the ground and point my fake gun at him, “How could I misunderstand looking at a criminal?”
“A retired criminal. Ms. Weiss, I’m your new assignment.” Richard looks up at me as I’m basically straddling him. I help him up and we are face to face.
“Oh my. I’m so sorry about that, Mr. Card, I-” My line gets but off with Richard grabbing my left arm back and pulling me harshly, nearly whispers into my ear, “All is forgiven, Ms. Weiss. Now let’s discuss our assignment shall we?”
Fuck me that accent is the hottest thing I’ve ever heard.
“And, cut!” Leonard and Pat clap their hands in amazement, “pure naturals, I have to say. So, we’re gonna do more action packed stuff for the next hour and then we’ll see you guys on set!”
I nod and look over at Richard in pure awe.
---------------------------
Our hour was up and I was so sweaty it was unbearable how disgusting my clothes were. Richard gave up wearing a shirt after about 30 minutes and I was in a sports bra practically clinging to me.
“So, we’ll see you guys on set tomorrow!” Leonard and Pat wave the two of us goodbye as they leave the gym.
“So, how are you feeling about all this?” Richard asks me as we clean up the bench we laid all our belonging on.
“Honestly, really good. It’s really helpful to not be going through all this training alone, ya know?”
“I feel you on that one. All this training was intense but when you have a partner to do it with, I think it becomes fun.” He smiles at me, “also, just wanted to say you’ve got some wandering eyes, ms. y/n”
Well yeah, I do you’re fucking gorgeous.
“Well, I mean I’d have to say the about you.”
“You are attractive, y/n if you didn’t know. And I did not think you’d be so flexible.” His eyes began to darken, those baby blues became night sky blue. Fuck Me.
“Are you implying something, Madden?” I begin inching closer to him, “your eyes have done some damage throughout the day, I think you owe me something.”
His eyebrows rose intrigued, “Me? Owe you? I mean I was going to ask you to dinner but the gym is empty and I just couldn’t stop thinking about myself feeling you. All of you.” His hand trailed up my back and brought me up against his chest.
I felt his shorts come in contact with my leg and holy fuck I’m in for it right now, “Richard, what are you waiting for? Kiss me already.”
“Naughty, I love it.” He growls and he pulls me for a kiss and it’s slow at first. Our lips slowly find a rhythm and my tongue begins to explore. Our kisses escalate and get sloppier and sloppier, the tension building up in the both of us and I jump, wrapping my legs around Richard. His hands grab my ass and massage it and I let a moan escape.
“Baby, I need to hear from you. Louder,” Richard begins kissing down my neck and my moans begin to echo in the empty gym, “That’s it.” He lays me down on the bench, “We don’t need to do this, y/n. Tell me if you’re uncomfortable and I’ll stop.”
“We’ve barely begun.” I grab his face and begin kissing him as we both begin stripping down. His mouth travels south, leaving marks down my stomach and he begins kissing down my inner thighs and his hands rubbing against me, moans getting louder. “I can’t wait to take a taste.” He looks up at me and I all I could do it nod.
He traces his tongue from my entrance to my clit and I reach down to pull him in closer but he grabs my wrist, “Patience, love. Patience.” His whispers vibrate inside me and I lose my mind. Richard hums, opening his mouth and lapping at your clit with his breath coming hard against you. His fingers find my clit as his tongue enters inside. Gripping his hair, he licks you continuously up and down and comes back up and kisses you, sharing the taste.
“Ready?”
“Never been more ready.” We both laugh and he brings me in close, “I’m not doing this just because you’re my co-star, I really do like you, y/n.”
“I like you too.” My face feeling 10x hotter than it already it, “Now show me how much you need me.”
“Yes, ma’am.”
He lined himself up with my entrance, leaning over and kissing down my spine. I simply nodded my head in response. He buried himself in me, a low grunt and small gasp leaving his lips. I gripped onto what of the bench I could reach and shut my eyes tight.
"Holy sh-," I mumbled, biting my lip as Richard slowly pulled his entire length out before entering me again. He began this steady rhythm of slow thrusts. He would thrust halfway out two or three times and then the fourth thrust would be his entire length. I’m sure my eyes were at the back of my head by the time he had groaned out that he was close. His thumb reached around to our conjoined bodies, making fast circles on my clit against his slow thrusts. I came with a toe-curling orgasm and he followed soon after. He removed the condom and threw it in the bin by the benches.
Richard carries me, bridal-style, “let’s shower and I’ll treat to the nicest dinner you’ve ever had.”
“Sounds like a plan.” I smile and kiss his cheek.
