i recently watched the horror movie Pin and i need some other incest shippers to watch it too- it's fucked up and deeply weird but there's some serious brother/sister overtones in Leon and Ursula's relationship. from what i hear the book is even more explicity incesty too!

I thought we'd get no Luca Marinelli after the festival showings of his upcoming series M – IL FIGLIO DEL SECOLO / M. SON OF THE CENTURY, but thankfully mans has things to do; like attending the Italian premiere of MUFASA: IL RE LEONE / MUFASA: THE LION KING (directed by Barry Jenkins).

Okay I have played a lot more of Kingdom hearts 1 final mix since last time I posted about it. As in just finished Neverland. Random thoughts go! (Spoilers)

- uhh Clayton boss fight was funny, Bro's movement was crazy he do just be jumping from one side of the arena to another.

- I love the Olympus tournament, so fun. I've finished all the way up to the Hercules one time trail. The time trial for Pegasus cup was honestly more difficult than the entire Hercules cup because of all the enemies that just stop you in your tracks, and I felt like at the time I was doing it I need like a full 40 seconds left on the clock to beat Leon and Yuffie

- still haven't figured out how to juggle the rare truffles for lots of xp

- I'm blanking on a lot I forget it all

- OMG MERLIN

- agrabah was cool, the Jafar fight felt pretty fleshed out honestly compared to... Ursula (I'll get back to her)

- kinda just been sticking with Donald and goofy rather than having anyone else on the party at all, the gang stays consistent

- i feel like I haven't been using summons enough rip

- I also haven't been keeping up with synthesis at all, I'm playing the game with my sister so we're mostly just progressing the story rather than completing side stuff, which is annoying because I want the make the ultima weapon

- speaking of which when do y'all recommend making the ultima keyblade? Like? I haven't gone to hollow bastion, pretty sure you can't even craft it until you get further into the game but still :( I wanna before the game ends

- I forget what came after agrabah tbh, is it straight from that to Atlantica?

- okay so Atlantica was fun yes, the swimming was a bit jarring but still fun, it was cool. BUT THE FIRST URSULA FIGHT SUCKEDDDD. Idk if it was just be skill issuing. But like you're supposed to cast magic onto the cauldron to attack her, but i kept getting knocked around by Flotsam and Jetsam. And whenever I tried to then lock onto Ursula or just attack them in general they kept getting in the way. Like I know that's probably the whole point of the fight but it just felt more irritating rather than challenging?

- monstro was meh like cool aesthetic I guess but not much to talk about other than Riku just grabbing Pinocchio also high jump omg my savior

- forgetting the order of things already, Halloween town? Was very cool, music good. I didn't really understand what I had to do at certain points but it was still fun such a vibe. I feel like this was the first world where the whole 'not being able to interact with things in combat' thing felt very annoying. Like you can't activate the headstone to cross the hill while combat is happening that's annoying. I get it the first time but like after a couple times trying to cross over it's just annoying

- the Oogie Boogie boss fight definitely felt like it had so much ambition but the camera angle just didn't let it play out well, maybe cause I'm playing on Xbox one that has something to do with it but I feel like when I'm angling the camera to look up at him on the platforms then I can't see Sora properly so I can't dodge and it just ruins the flow.

- him turning giant was pretty sick tho, 2 giant ahh bosses in a row. The Ursula one was very boring compared to Oogie Boogie.

- Neverland? I feel like I'm forgetting a world, it was cool, flying is cool. The anti Sora fight was deffo fun, and so was the Hook fight I guess, kinda felt like a short world but good quality.

- gonna try work through all the synthesis stuff that I can before moving onto hollow bastion, also like going through all the worlds again now that I have up to yellow Trinity and gliding and stuff, should be able to find stuff :3

- i haven't done anything with the Gummi ship, like should I be doing that?

- I'm enjoying it a lot, I can't wait to see what the rest of the series is like :D

in defense of marxism - leon trotksy: i read this for work. it's a collection of trotsky's letters detailing an oncoming split in the socialist workers party in the US. more important than those specifics, though, are the lessons about how to conduct a historical analysis. if you want to understand the nature of something today, you have to understand its origins, what it developed out of, and what broader processes it's a part of. the specific example fleshed out in the book is the degeneration of the USSR. the last letter was written in 1940, only a few weeks before trotsky was assassinated.

the lathe of heaven - ursula k le guin: this was the first novel i read in i don't know how long. i was traveling a ton over the summer for work and i found myself with a few free days in an unfamiliar city and i spent most of it looking for good places to read. i devoured it in just a few days because it's absolutely brilliant.

if this isn't nice, what is? - kurt vonnegut: this is a collection of graduation speeches vonnegut delivered, which i've read before. but the sentiment is very important to me; i mentioned it to my partner at a party and how i've so often felt myself doing just that, looking around and saying if this isn't nice, what is? i saw it at a bookstore a few weeks later so bought it for them for christmas <3

in their lives: great writers on great beatles songs: i picked this one up at powell's when i visited over the summer, because i couldn't resist. roz chast is a highlight, and i already had my father read one since the music journalist in question was describing his son's childhood in perfect parallel to mine: children of beatlemaniacs who become even bigger and more fanatical beatlemaniacs.

changing planes - ursula k leguin: i only finished this a few days ago. it's a collection of short stories which all take place in the same universe, documenting one woman's travels to different planes and the civilizations there. in classic le guin fashion, it leaves you stunned and speechless and touched and affected by the most bizarre of circumstances.

the answers - catherine lacey: i picked this one up in birmingham over the summer. as soon as i finished lathe of heaven on the first leg of my travels, i knew i'd need a new book, so i marched over to the nearest bookstore and asked them to recommend me something based on that, and also my love of vonnegut. it was a thoroughly unexpected human story with just the right amount of absurdism and coincidence to make it worth reading. i look forward to reading more of lacey's work

Red Sun (1971)

A samurai and an outlaw walk into a saloon… The setup for Terence Young’s Red Sun feels like it was engineered to be every dad’s favorite dumb joke setup, and yet somehow the film managed to pull in quite the slate of names. Helmed by action star and Cannon darling Charles Bronson as the gruff roughneck Link, he has the show pretty much stolen from him by Toshiro Mifune’s turn as Kuroda. But that’s not all: Alain Delon appears as the steely-gazed Gauche, joined by his devotee Cristina, with Young dipping back into his pool of Bond actors with Ursula Andress. The reluctant partnership between Link and Kuroda, shifting from Link attempting to shrug off his responsibilities at any turn to relying on one another and even coming to respect each other, is played with an assured hand by both. And the film has a wry wit, both Mifune and Bronson tossing off one-liners and standard issue action movie punchlines like seasoned experts. However, given his Bond pedigree, it’s almost hilarious how reluctant the film’s attempts at sexuality are. “Oh, do you want to see my boooooobs? Sigh, well, I guess that can be arranged, oh wait the camera is already fading to black well you get the point byeeee” I guess they figured they could coast off the raw appeal of Delon, Andress and Mifune, and Bronson’s weird ‘stache.

From its opening Coplandesque strains and harmonica ditties to the clapboard saloon where Kuroda and Link find Cristina, it’s almost quaint how hard this film was trying to dip into the success of Spaghetti westerns like those created by Sergio Leone. Shot in Spain, this does boast some striking landscape photography, and the film really does make a meal out of insert shots of the sun blazing in the sky overhead. Some brilliant screenwriter really came to the conclusion that the sun emblem on the Japanese flag could have a double in its literal sense here and ran with it. But elsewhere it’s almost cute to see the movie trying so hard. Bright scarlet tempera paint spatters actors taken out by gunfire or katana, the film in parts becoming something of a hybrid jidaigeki as Kuroda hacks through baddies by the score. Westerns’ tendencies to use various indigenous tribes as MCU faceless baddies is always gauche, but here it is rather amusing that whoever was in charge of wardrobe and hair for the Comanche found a bunch of Raggedy Ann-ass braided wigs and was like “this is fine.” Is this one of the all-time greats as far as the Western is concerned? Ehhh… But it’s a fun cultural exchange romp with plenty of enjoyable action.

Opera Omnia Burst Themes 1/?

With Opera Omnia shutting down, I decided to make a few posts about one of my favorite parts of the game: The Burst Weapons. Not because they were a powerful, much sought after weapon tier that gave big numbers with massive benefits, but because I have a love for Final Fantasy music, and what BTs I wanted was strongly dependent on what song would play when used.

(lots of rambling below the cut little bit embarrassed!!!!)

Books:

The Farthest Shore by Ursula K. Le Guin ; Nothing I say about this book (this series!) can do it justice honestly everyone on the Earth should read Earthsea. like really really read it patiently and intensely and with a savor because you will never encounter reality so closely and clearly ever again. everything about it is real to me but this book particularly struck me just because. well. lebannen. a force undeniable. I didn't know I was capable of loving so deeply and profoundly until I knew him. he is the best. I love you Lebannen 💥💥💥 I love everything about these books honestly. immense grace aside that shit also inspired perhaps the most intense and creatively demanding period of my life & broke down a lot of the mental partitions that I had constructed around what my hands are capable of. And I am still really bobbing through the wake of even now. Hopefully more marvelous things to come. There is much more strength to be drawn from this place yet if I can stomach it. sighs.

Death with Interruptions by José Saramago ; My words are failing me here but like. Saramago's voice and style have become real fixtures for me. I need to read a Saramago at least once every few months or my life loses its musicality. This is where I started with him so it gets to be on the list but Cain is also a great one for many many many more reasons that would be toooo much talking. for me to post.

I feel like by law I have to put Plato's Republic here which like. honestly not the most philosophically valuable work or even my drug of choice these days but was a thirteen year old's first inquest into the field that would become his only scholastic passion. so ! (He didn't even know he would have to read it seven times during his undergrad 😭) but if we want another novel to put here maybe We Need to Talk about Kevin by Lionel Shriver (mostly because of one sequence but also Shriver's great at writing in the voice of wry & cerebral women whose sentimentality is kind of shielded by their overt insight it gives them real internal lushness).

Honorable mention also to Isaac Asimov's I, Robot and subsequent novels of Asimov's future chronology which are currently fucking me up beyond measure. My recommendation here is read I, Robot (Or The Complete Robot!) and maaaybe Caves of Steel (tightly written marvel with only forgivable weaknesses of unprobed psychologies) and then stop. Just don't keep going okay. I've also had um Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal by Christopher Moore still swimming around in my mind despite having finished it a good while ago.

Movies:

Uhhh I don't w.atch. errr. Movies I can think of that I've watched just at all of my own volition: Raw (2016). good experience but didn't move me hugely taboo-pushing which is awesome conceptually but not in the right ways for me idk. not a bad movie at all though definitely some kind of stupid elements at play as well.
