'I look in the mirror'

We wrote with two guitars, John and I. And, as I’ve mentioned previously, the joy of that was that I was left-handed while he was right handed, so I was looking in a mirror and he was looking in a mirror. We would always tune up, have a ciggie, drink a cup of tea, start playing some stuff, look for an idea. Normally, one or the other of us would arrive with a fragment of a song. ‘Please Please Me’ was a John idea. John liked the double meaning of ‘please’. Yeah, ‘please’ is, you know, pretty please. ‘Please have intercourse with me. So, pretty please, have intercourse with me, I beg you to have intercourse with me.’ He liked that, and I liked that he liked that. This was the kind of thing we’d see in each other, the kind of thing in which we were matched up. We were in sync.
(Paul McCartney, about Please Please Me in The Lyrics, 2021)

A lot of what we had going for us was that we were both good at noticing the stuff that just pops up, and grabbing it. And the other thing is that John and I had each other. If he was sort of stuck for a line, I could finish it. If I was stuck for somewhere to go, he could make a suggestion. We could suggest the way out of the maze to each other, which was a very handy thing to have. We inspired each other.
(Paul McCartney, about Eight Days A Week in The Lyrics, 2021)

When John and I met, the first year of our friendship was spent talking about these cover versions, the records we loved, and then playing them again and again. As we got to know each other, we practised these various covers until one day the conversation went, ‘You know, I’ve written one or two songs.’ And he said, ‘Yeah, so have I.’ That gave us something in common that was itself wholly uncommon. I went to a school of a thousand boys and I’d never met anyone who said he’d written a song. Mine were just in my head. So were John’s. We took each other by surprise. And then the logical extension was, ‘Well, maybe we could write one together.’ So that’s how we started. And we became versions of each other.

Q: "Can I ask you about Lewis Carroll?" A: "Oh, Lewis Carroll. I always admit to that because I love 'Alice In Wonderland' and 'Alice Through The Looking Glass.' But I didn't even know he'd written anything else. I was that ignorant. I just happened to get those for birthday presents as a child and liked them. And I usually read those two about once a year, because I still like them."
(John Lennon, June 16, 1965, interview for BBC)

I think of the imagined world of Lewis Carroll [Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There] that John and I both loved so much.
(Paul McCartney, about I’ll Get You in The Lyrics, 2021)
We’d been together so much that if you had a question, we would both pretty much come up with the same answer. [about their hitchhike to Spain by way of Paris] <…> It’s a bit crude, but it’s fair to say that, in general, I’d had a good life and John hadn’t. His life had been tougher, and he had to develop a harder shell than I did. He was quite a cynical guy but, as they say, with a heart of gold. A big softy, but his shield was hard. So that was very good for the two of us. Opposites attract. I could calm him down, and he could fire me up. We could see things in each other that the other needed to be complete.
(Paul McCartney about Ticket To Ride in The Lyrics, 2021)

Sometimes I look in the mirror Is nobody there? But I just keep on staring and staring No Can it be? Can it be? Can it be? And if I look in the mirror And nobody´s there But I just keep on staring, and staring No Is it me? Is it me? Is it me?

Showdown 2k25
Just like last year I want to kick January off with a flat popularity contest, showdown 2k25.
Automatically competing - everyone from last year (list), with the following exceptions
Last years winner - Donna Noble
Possibly Rose Tyler as the 2023 winner, but I need to think on it a bit more
I'm going to reassess a few from last year, specifically the real people
Rules for new nominees (tardis wiki list referenced below)
Anyone on the list will automatically be accepted
TV companions MUST be on the list
EU companions not on the list will be considered on a case by case basis. If they meet a reasonable definition of companion I will accept them, basic guideline is has their own tardis wiki article so I can actually check, multiple stories with the Doctor, none of these guidelines are hard rules, if you can justify them to me, I'll let them in
Propaganda is not carrying over from last year, if you want to go to bat for someone, use this same form
You can use this form to make multiple nominations/give multiple bits of propaganda at once.
You have until at least the 1st of January
list of competitors, anyone in green has propaganda submitted for them

ETA-vaatimukset koskevat kaikkia eurooppalaisia matkustajia, ja todistus tulee olla hyväksyttynä huhtikuun toisesta päivästä alkaen. Netissä tai erillisessä sovelluksessa täytettävä hakemus maksaa 10 puntaa eli noin 12 euroa.
Eurooppalaiset matkustajat voivat hakea ETA-todistusta matkaansa varten maaliskuun viidennestä päivästä alkaen. Todistus on voimassa kaksi vuotta kerrallaan, jos siihen yhdistetty passi ei ehdi mennä vanhaksi ensin.
---
Uudet säännökset koskevat myös välilaskuja. Lennon vaihtaminen Britanniassa vaatii myös ETA-todistuksen

'Afternoon all, Mr. Baggins back with our Afternoon Stack of Classic Wax. This afternoon we pay tribute to the man who stood for everything my generation fought for, because today marks the 44th anniversary of his being gunned down by a CIA psyop'd christian nationalist. Yes, I still miss and revere John Lennon. I'm starting this off with my favorite of John's tracks off Magical Mystery Tour, issued as a single before the album. "Let me take you down..."
youtube
John was the first of The Beatles to begin putting out solo material, and he was quite early and prolific. Released in 1969, here is the first official record made by a soon-to-be-Ex-Beatle, made in a Canadian hotel room with a host of celebs and hangers-on (including Petula Clark and Joni Mitchell!), issued in the last months of 1969, this became the protest song of our generation:
youtube
John had his demons, toying with heroin in the last days of The Beatles; here is his second single, his song about withdrawal. It was the first of the singles for the "A" side to be labeled "PLAY LOUD" and Yoko's "B" side labeled "PLAY SOFT".
youtube
By the time the decade changed, John had issued his Plastic Ono Band album, and keeping with the tradition of issuing singles that were not on any albums, in February 1970, he gave us one of his most indelible hits, also labeled "PLAY LOUD": Instant Karma!
youtube
By the beginning of '71, everyone had listened to the Plastic Ono Band album, with it's rawness and power hitting everyone in the face...no hyper-produced sound. No studio fuckery. Just raw, stripped-down, emotive beyond belief, rock and roll. The main takeaway was that John had gone through Art Janov's "Primal Scream" therapy, and had begun dealing with his demons for real. The biggest demon? His mother. She didn't want him, she didn't raise him. But he loved her. This next single, which was issued in the last days of 1970 and became a hit in '71, was one of the things that came out of the Primal Scream therapy sessions.
youtube
When this next single blasted out of the radio for the very first time, I got goosebumps. It activated something deep in my soul that has never gone dormant since. This became yet another potent protest anthem of my generation, and it is still as powerful today as it was nearly 54 years ago, when I first heard it.
youtube
By this time, John was recording what would be his biggest album of the '70s, which gave us yet another "Anthem of The People", the title cut, "Imagine". his gentle ode to world peace, Issued on a mysterious "white apple" label, never seen before or since, that matched the label on the album, which was issued September 9, 1971.
youtube
And John and Yoko gave us a Xmas song at the end of '71 which is still the only Xmas song I can stomach. It also was another "Anthem for the People", easy to sing en-masse at protests: "Happy Xmas (war is over)". It was issued on GREEN see-through vinyl! I remember actually crying when I first heard it come out of the radio all those years ago...the tears just came. That's how you know a record is MAGIC!
youtube
And while John has been vilified for his earlier treatment of his ex-wife Cynthia, he had been dealing with his demons and changing. He put out this next single, which would be his only single in 1972, as an anthem for women's rights. It was controversial for having the "n" word in the title. I remember he and Yoko going on Dick Cavett's show to promo it, performing it live. That interview and performance are still out there on youtube, recommended viewing!
youtube
Then came 1973, and John and Yoko began having problems, which John enshrined in his next album with the title cut, "Mind Games". It was his first single for '73, and became a ubiquitous top ten hit.
youtube
That's, sadly, all the space we have for this Afternoon Stack of Classic Wax! I will probably have a second installment for the rest of John's hits, and some of my favorite "John songs" from The Beatles. It's difficult for me to articulate just what John meant to me, I've tried with my pinned post, which is a long read, but might give y'all some idea of how much John influenced me, and my sub-generation.
This is Mr. Baggins signing off for now, I'll return at 7pm Pacific with a set of music to soothe your achin' nerves and help ease us all into a good night.
Until then, be kind, babies, be kind.
Baggins out.

[ 𝕥𝕖𝕩𝕥 ] - 𝓈𝒶𝓇𝒶𝒽 & 𝒿𝑜𝓈𝒾𝑒
sarah: I think lennon has the right idea, keeping the peace. oh lady, yes. I was the eldest in this scenario, keep that in mind....fights were had, simply over a pair of pants or anything. It was a war-zone, or if things we're misplaced or broken, nobody fessed, she said i was bossier, anything set us off. That being said ,those two will do anything for one another and hopefully give mom some quiet from time to time, but you've got time before all that comes along. They may even prove us wrong ! i'll be remaining a cool aunt until then, promise i won't ever let them convince me to get tat's 🥴 i'm an easy gal, Jo, i'll take it. soon, perhaps being the fashion show in Berlin ? I thought i'd give it another go this year and i need one of my best gals as support. Now that, is my version of heaven, fuck. I want us both channeling our inner sophia, no care in the world and those huge thick sun glasses, we'll be so mystery. And changed for the better, at that. oh ooooh. no shoes, overall's ? you're reeling me in here, aaron's gotta get his game up. it'll be one tough call, but he beats be at other aspects...he can let me have the sun hat win 😜 josie: she's definitely a lover, not a fighter. it must be the danish in her. that makes so much sense! you have an oldest-sibling demeanor and it's one of the greatest qualities. that had to be tough. at least my brother wasn't stealing my clothes! are you and your sisters closer now that you're past that stage? wait....are you past that stage? nooooo, quiet is a bad thing! running around and chasing after my babies is all i want in life! as long as they sleep well and aren't super picky eaters, i'm good with everything else thrown our way. you're the coolest aunt and they're going to be running over to your house every chance they get! well, if you're off seeing the world. otherwise, i think i know whose house they'll sneak into for parties and such 😉 they will and it'll probably be something cool too. i'll be infinitely jealous that they wanted to go with you and not me! one of the reasons why you're one of my favorite people. you know i wouldn't miss a chance to see you and hype you up! you closing the show? ICONIC. couldn't think of a more perfect person to do so. and, i miss you already! oh, yes! we'll have the locals whispering about who we are because of how glamorous we appear. for the best. what i want with aaron is so different than the vision i had back then, too. absolutely no shoes! hopefully they come off long before the overalls come on. as per usual! haha, i'm not so sure about that. you're both pretty neck in neck on a lot of things.

this is a bit of a ramble but i really believe that the missus reads little women with the girls at bedtime as they get a bit older (and then charlie, too), and while attie likes it lennon (bless her) gets so into it and decides she wants to be a writer like jo (and her mum obv). and going by what you said about her coming into her own a bit more when she starts to play instruments, i can totally see her at the dinner table one day just announce to everyone that "by the way, i've sort of written an EP worth of songs" (some beautiful introspective stuff) and her parents are, like, embarrassingly proud
matty would lose his mind and the missus would be itching to read the lyrics and it would be a whole family listening party in the living room for miss lennon and co

MON ANNIVERSAIRE!!!

Kokemukseni perustuu kahteen Royal Caribbeanin Karibian risteilyyn, Oasis-luokan laivoilla. Postaus sisältää Affiliate linkkejä, jotka on merkitty *
Tipit!
Vaihtoehtoisesti voit ostaa tagille oman muovisen tagi taskun, mikä on tarkoitettu risteily varustamojen tageille. Esimerkiksi itse ostin edellisen reissun jälkeen tämän*
Jhonny Rocket! Jhonny Rocket on lisämaksullinen ravintola muutamaa poikkeusta lukuunottamatta, mitä olisin itse halunnut tietää jo ekalla ristielyllä.
