Mimosa
(7/27/17)
Before you begin salivating at the thought of champagne and orange juice, check out this intricate species with some stories to tell. This tree pops in spring with its bright pink flashes scattered in the sunlight. Its fern-like leaves distinguish it from others, and the tropical look makes it even more fascinating to be in a place like Chattanooga. It’s also a member of the legume plant family, which means it has a role in nitrogen fixation (basically making fertilizer). However, don’t let the soft pink fool you; these are strong competitors. The mimosa trees are listed as an invasive species in Florida due to their ability of managing a variety of soils, producing a multitude of seeds, and blocking sunlight and nutrients for native species. This pretty plant peaks its head most often along the highway and edging the ecotone of the forest. Alright, you may now return to your delicious breakfast beverage.
Species: Albizia julibrissin
Common Name: Persian Silk Tree, Pink Silk Tree, Pink Siris, Lenkoran Acacia, Bastard Tamarind, Sleeping Tree
Interesting Note: This species is known as the sleeping tree because its leaves close in and fall downward at night or during rain. If you don’t have time to wait on the sun, here’s a time-lapse video that I had absolutely no part in creating. https://youtu.be/sZl7vzfVZdU?t=24s
