       port leiry is an overflowing well of everything allie had been looking for- searching for years. intrigue, energy- both dark and light and everything muddled in between, slipped shadows and sparkles -, magic, and potential. potential for anything. boredom feels so far away, tangled with the enchantment she feels from wandering around, untethered but surrounded by the city. all the wandering which had led her here had grasped hold of her now, so it was no surprise that a lull in the day had drawn her from the human boundaries of the city, to just outside of it. the woods. she still believed she could lay her head on the mossy pillows the forest floor provided and be completely satisfied. while she wasn’t asleep now, she was taking advantage of the softness, sprawled upon her belly with her feet kicking up gently. aimlessly, she drew pictures in the tendrils of long grass, singing songs to the creatures wandering right along with her, coaxing them out in a way a human could not. she forgets about rules, and people, and anything that wasn’t good and green and entwined with enchantment. 

       she’s playing hide and seek with the deer, parting branches with only breaths of magic when there’s an unfamiliar quiver amongst the trees that snaps her out of the dreamy, playful haze. the part of her that feels reaches out to wrap its arms around the figure, entertaining the rumbles and echoes that respond through the earth. allie decides they mean safety, even if she can’t see them, because they feel like her.  “ have you come to play too? ”  she says, rolling the stark gasp and snap of branches that had come from her initial sight of them off of her body, gentle and playful like it had never happened. it was only her being silly, that’s all. there’s nothing to be scared of.

Hi Bree!

My mother-in-law is a great horror movie fan, and unfortunately believes all the "based on a true story 💀" stuff. She has never heard of the Warrens and wouldn't quite believe me when I tried to tell her. Now her birthday is coming up, and I'm thinking a book debunking the Warrens would make a good gift. Do you have any recommendations? I know you're very knowledgeable about this stuff. Thanks in advance and have a lovely day!

Unfortunately, I don't think there are any comprehensive books about Why The Warrens Are Full Of Shit, and even if there were, I'd be dubious about giving that as a gift. That might be more of a Future Discussion Topic type of thing.

As far as info-gathering goes, I know @theouijagirl has talked EXTENSIVELY about it in her series on The Warren Curse. She guested on the January 2023 episode of Hex Positive, entitled "Extended Warren Tea," and the two of us sat down with @crazycatsiren and expounded on the topic at some length. (It's one of my favorite episodes of the show, we had the BEST time making it. And I challenge anyone not to giggle at Lorelei's showstopping oneliner, "If there is tuna in the house, give us a sign.")

If your mother-in-law is interested in horror movies and spooky stories, I might recommend one of the books in the Haunted America series by Michael Norman and Beth Scott. "Historic Haunted America" was one of the first "true" ghost story books I ever read, and it brings together a wonderful blend of history and folklore that makes for a very engaging read. Obviously take everything in it with a heaping spoonful of salt, but it's still a wonderful book!
