Half Saree Function Photoshoot: A Celebration of Traditional Glamour
In the world of Indian fashion, the half saree, also known as the "lengha choli" or "pattu pavadai," has an enduring charm that seamlessly blends tradition with contemporary style. It's a symbol of grace, elegance, and cultural richness that many young women embrace with pride, especially during significant life events like weddings, coming-of-age ceremonies, or cultural festivities. With its vibrant colors, intricate designs, and a rich history, the half saree function photoshoot has become an essential part of capturing the essence of this time-honored attire.
The half saree is a garment that epitomizes the beauty and versatility of Indian clothing. It consists of three main components: a pleated skirt or lehenga, a blouse or choli, and a flowing drape called the dupatta. Each of these elements comes together to create a stunning and dynamic ensemble. The half saree's allure lies in its ability to maintain a deep connection with India's rich traditions while adapting to modern trends. It's not just an outfit; it's a symbol of grace, heritage, and a rite of passage.
When it comes to celebrating the beauty of half sarees through a photoshoot, one can expect a journey that captures the essence of traditional glamour. Here, we explore some essential tips and ideas for a memorable half saree function photoshoot:
1. Location Selection: Choosing the right location is crucial for a half saree photoshoot. Traditional settings such as heritage buildings, temples, or gardens can add a timeless charm to your photos. However, urban backdrops or contemporary locations can create a striking contrast, emphasizing the fusion of tradition and modernity.
2. Attire and Accessories: Half sarees are known for their vibrant colors and intricate designs. Ensure your attire complements the setting and your personal style. Accessories like statement jewelry, maang tikkas, and bangles can enhance the overall look and feel.
3. Makeup and Hairstyling: Traditional makeup with a focus on expressive eyes and bold lips can enhance the traditional vibe. Hairstyling can include classic bun styles or braids adorned with flowers or hair accessories.
4. Poses and Expressions: Work with your photographer to capture a mix of traditional and contemporary poses. Use your expressions to convey the emotions associated with the event, whether it's a sense of celebration, happiness, or nostalgia.
5. Candid Moments: Half saree functions are rich in candid moments. Capture the joy, laughter, and emotional interactions that make this event truly special.
6. Lighting: Lighting is critical for any photoshoot. Natural light works wonders for capturing the colors and textures of your half saree, but don't hesitate to experiment with artificial lighting to create unique effects.
7. Family and Friends: Half saree functions are often celebrated with family and friends. Including them in your photos can add a sense of togetherness and warmth to your pictures.
Half saree function photoshoots are more than just a visual record of a memorable event; they are a celebration of cultural heritage and personal identity. By combining the elegance of traditional attire with the art of modern photography, you can create a portfolio of images that not only capture your beauty but also preserve the rich tradition and glamour of the half saree. It's a celebration of traditional glamour in all its glory, and it's a story worth telling. So, embrace the heritage, showcase your style, and let your half saree function photoshoot be a true celebration of traditional beauty.

Indian Function Prompts
(Made this a long time ago but I found it and decided to post it, some are inspired by my personal experiences!!!)
We were doing garba and I'm not a very good dancer and couldn't keep up with the flow of the steps so I kept on crashing into you. I'm so sorry.
You kept stepping on my feet during garba PLEASE STOP
My lengha/skirt was too long and I kept on slipping but you always helped me up and asked if I was okay
We were doing dandiya and every time I passed by you I accidentally hit your knuckles instead of your dandiyas. Are you okay? You're not bleeding right?
We're doing a game one of the aunties/uncles set up and we got partnered up together
You really liked my saree/kurta/any clothing and I really appreciate the compliment, but you kept on repeating it again and again because you weren't sure you said it the first time
It was too loud in the hall so i went outside in the freezing cold and we talked until someone yelled at us to get inside
You have such good fashion sense GOD IM jealous
We see each other at events because our families or friends are close but I never knew your name but we always played together as kids
You did a dance and wow am I jealous of your talent and skill please teach me
I suck at doing dandiya so you gladly pulled me to the side to teach me how to

My designs
I first started out my designs with a super simple base, like a simple dress and simple silhouettes and then added simplistic and slight detailing inspired by beading found in saris and lenghas (the first three are examples of this). Though after some feedback, I decided that these designs were not strong enough in conveying Azadi's vision and purpose and decided I needed to be bolder in my approach. I would say the 4th design from the left is my favourite and is an accurate garment for our vision and purpose.
The two designs below is what was picked by my team for the final garments. You will see that there is slight adjustment in the trousers for the first garment. When my group and I was discussing, the beading on the previous version of the design would have been far too expensive and not very environmentally friendly, so we came to the unanimous decision of having them as embroidered flowers.
For the chiffon shawl I took inspiration from the draping of the material over the shoulder on a sari. I shortened it and took it around both shoulders and behind the back and also over the one shoulder and under the opposite arm, resembling the draping a bit more. I intended for the material to be a chiffon, emulating the net material sometimes found in many sari designs but while also offering a bit more of an opaque colouring and covering.
The tank top is a super simple and basic design playing into the comfort and casualness of the outfit with the detailing and south asian aspect coming from the chiffon shawl.
The ‘parachute pants’ were another basic design as the base that we elevated with the detailing of the embroidered flowers. I chose the colours of the flowers to be pinks, yellows and beiges, emulating the colours of the national flowers of some of the South Asian countries (lotus, jasmine and white water lily) and added dark green leaves in pairs at points between the flowers. The flowers do vary in size, some bigger and some smaller to give it a more carefree look.
Design 2: Layered chiffon skirt and Matching Top
The design of the skirt was inspired by the pleating and wrapping of the lower half of a sari. The first base layer of the skirt is a more opaque fabric, acting as the main colour of the skirt. The layers above that base are of varying lengths and of a more of a net material to act as a translucent layer that we are still able to see the colour of the base through it. Across the waistband of the base layer of the skirt, almost draped across, are small embroidered flowers that replicate and give the illusion of a soft fabric belt.
The top is more basic and the focal point is the delicate floral embroidery across the neckline of the top. The top is an olive green, so I chose the colour of the flowers to complement this green so I picked a deep red, borderline maroon colour. The sleeves flare out towards the end and give a butterfly wing effect - super flowy, almost magical.

Dressing my sister for her Wedding! . Dressing my sister @ayushikejriwal for her big day was fun and very challenging in equal parts. She got married twice once in a South Indian style and the second time in the North Indian way. For her evening north Indian wedding it was clear that she wanted to wear a red lengha. I decided to go very traditional and style her in a Rajputani lengha which is worn with just one dupatta. It took me around 7 months to get her lengha made, the biggest challange was to get the right shade of red, we had to dye the silk 8 times to achieve the colour that I was happy with. I decided to go for big life size hand embroidered butas for the skirt and a jacket style blouse, the aim was to create a garment that my sister could use in various ways. Her skirt, her blouse, her jacket and her duppata can be styled in multiple ways and she will be able to create numerous looks. The gold work on her lengha was achieved by dying the sequins and washing them to create the antique rustic colour, I did not want it to be shiny. I styled her in custom made Rajputani jewellery and a very bold head piece. More pics to follow, watch this space... #ayushkejriwal #indianbride #indianlengha #bridallengha #redlengha #destinationwedding #indiandulhan #beautifullengha #designerlangha #rednadgold #embroideredlengha (at London, United Kingdom) https://www.instagram.com/p/ConmzUKM0BY/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The Types of Indian dresses
Navigating the world of Indian garments can be quite intimidating. There’s a wide range of Indian styles appropriate to wear, and they're not all called sarees! Here’s a list of the different types, and when they’re most appropriate.
What is a Lehenga?
A lengha (pronounced leng-ah) is typically a 3-piece outfit composed of:
- Skirt (lehenga)
- Cropped blouse (choli)
- Scarf (dupatta)
The lehenga has a similar look to a sari because of the draped fabric but is much easier to wear. (And dance in!) Embellished and elegant, lehengas are delightfully universal. They can be worn at weddings, engagements, sangeets, or receptions. Whether you're the bride or a guest — a lehenga will make any mom proud.
What is an Anarkali?
An Anarkali (pronounced uh-naar-kuh-lee) is a combination of:
- Long flowing top (kurta)
- Leggings or Pants (churidaar)
- Scarf (dupatta)
Because they’re so versatile and low-maintenance, an Anarkali is a good choice no matter the weather or occasion.
Legend has it that Anarkali suits originated back in the Mughal Era. These suits are named after Anarkali (which means pomegranate blossom), a famous courtesan of the Great Emperor Akbar’s court.
What is a saree?
The most traditional Indian garment, a saree (pronounced sah-ree), consists of three pieces:
- Petticoat skirt
- Cropped blouse
- Six-yard fabric
The saree itself is pleated, wrapped, and elegantly draped across your shoulder. With dozens of different ways to style it, sarees can look different depending on their region of origin — or even the type of function you’re attending.
The saree can be an heirloom passed down through generations, or a purely functional garment worn every day. It’s seen on streets and runways and has influenced fashion designers across the world.
What is a sharara suit?
A Sharara suit has a pair of wide-leg, flowy pants that are distinctive to this piece. It consists of three parts:
- Wide leg pants
- A blouse (varying in length)
- A dupatta or vest
The Sharara outfit is a fun and playful option. It is best for a Sangeet, Mehndi, or Wedding event.
What is a kaftan?
While a kaftan is not traditionally South Asian in origin, it has been adopted as an appropriate dress for Indian events. A kaftan is traditionally an oversized floor-length blouse that is embellished with details. It would be most appropriate for a Sangeet, Mehndi, or Wedding event.
More Guidance
Traditions of formality and colors vary by family and region of India. If a dress has more embroidery, it is usually considered to be a fancier dress. Bright colors are usually encouraged as a sign of prosperity. To compare some do’s and don'ts based on events, read our Indian Dress Guide.
