Americans' Super Bowl spending to rise despite inflation worries | masr356.com
Former NFL player Jake Bequette gives his take on the celebrity culture shift to the right and Sunday’s big game on ‘Varney & Co.’ Americans are getting ready for the Super Bowl to kick off on Sunday, and while spending on festivities related to the big game is up, more fans are wanting to dial it back than wanting to spend more, a new report found. A study by LendingTree found that 75% of…

Americans Are Spending More Than Ever on Their Super Bowl Parties — Especially Millennials
Millions of Americans will sit this Sunday to watch the leaders take on the eagles in a superbank. Many will hold meetings for family and friends, and, according to a new study, they will put forward quite a penny to do it. LendingTree published the results of their last survey, in which more than 2000 Americans were asked how much they plan to spend on the holidays of the Super Bowl of this…

9/29/24
I gave myself the day off of writing yesterday because I was super busy all day and didn’t get home until late (for me lol). I am going to write something related to that, actually -
On the realization of aging, and also Atlanta sports.
Yesterday, my friend Amanda and I went to a college football game. More specifically, we went to see our alma mater, Georgia State University. It had been a while. The last time we saw a GSU game, they were still bumming off of the Georgia Dome, and I think it was one of the final events held in that stadium before they demolished it in favor of Megatron’s Butthole. (It has a proper name, and that is not its proper name, but its very camera aperture-like roof does bring mecha cloaca to mind.)
Since then, GSU has moved from one castoff major league stadium to another, setting up shop at the former Turner Field and transforming it into a football stadium. You can still see the baseball of it all if you look carefully because the stadium’s structure has remained the same; they just tarp and cordon off one part of it so people don’t try to sit there. The field is actually very nicely situated and they’ve built lots of new things around it, including a convocation center that I believe also serves as a basketball arena. GSU has built so many new things since I graduated that I feel like I’d hardly be able to get around campus at this point! All things considered, I’d much rather have the old Turner Field be renovated and used for something instead of it sitting vacant and becoming an eyesore.
I still have not been to a game at Megatron’s Butthole or Located-in-Atlanta-but-just-barely new Braves Park yet. I’ll get there eventually - they are still both within their first decade and Atlanta only gets itchy to start building “new” stadiums once a venue turns 20. In that way, State Farm Arena is starting to get long in the tooth because it was built in 1999, though it received some renovations around the same time the new stadiums were opening and those renovations may have given it a second lease on life. Those renovations did remove any hockey configuration, though, so if the NHL does decide to give us a third swing at having a team (third try’s the charm, right?) it will have to be in a different venue.
Now that I’ve set the table for the current state of Atlanta sports a little bit, back to the game at hand. Amanda and I are in our mid-30s, but I truly don’t feel that way sometimes. Even though I have hit a lot of Adult Milestones - married, bought a house, refinanced the mortgage on said house, bought a car, lost a parent - I sometimes feel a bit youthful. Well, yesterday, I started to not really feel that way!
After we walked into the stadium, we saw a live performance by the school’s drum line and rock band. Yes, we have a rock band as part of our marching band! It’s a guitarist, a keyboardist and a guy sitting behind a full rock drum set. They get around by standing on a long flatbed and being towed around the performance venue by a guy driving an equipment cart. One time the school band performed in the Thanksgiving Day Parade and that’s how the rock band traversed the parade route.
So the rock band and the drum line are playing. There are a few folks playing large stand-up xylophones, snare drums, tenor drums and bass drums, standing beneath a sweeping display that announces the various big moments of the GSU Panthers football program since its inception in 2010: the 2015 Cure Bowl (lost that one), 2017 Cure Bowl (won that one), 2019 Arizona Bowl (lost that one), the time the University of Tennessee paid us a million dollars for what was expected to be an easy Vols win but actually turned out to be a 38-30 Panthers win (hehe that was awesome), 2020 Lendingtree Bowl (won that one), 2021 Camellia Bowl (won that one), 2023 Potato Bowl (won that one).
College bowl games have such weird names, don’t they?
When we walked up reasonably close to this performance so I could take some pictures, especially to show my husband because he was in the marching band in high school, I was able to closely see the faces of the xylophone players - and in that moment, it struck me. Oh goodness, I thought to myself, they look so young. Smooth round faces without even a hint of a wrinkle, touched only by chin blemishes - these folks looked like children, and that’s because they’re not that far past genuinely being children.
I am not anti-aging. We should all be so blessed to be able to age at all. Many people die before their time and have no such luxury. But in that moment, I really had that kind of “Oh Toto, we’re not in Kansas anymore” feeling. Oh buddy, you really are 35 going on 36, and you’re really feeling every little bit of that right now, aren’t you?
And then the marching band played a lot of songs from the early 2000s, an era that Amanda and I remember very fondly, but one in which most (if not all) of those marching band players were not even alive yet. They might think of those songs as something their parents told them about, songs their moms would play while hitting the clubs with her friends, a few years before they were twinkles in her eye. That was another moment where the two of us very much Felt Our Ages.
The Panthers lost 38-21 to their biggest rivals, the inferior GSU, Georgia Southern University. It was the inaugural game of our own cup matchup, a bit like the Apple Cup or the Iron Bowl - things I only know about because I listen to the Shutdown Fullcast. Keeping with the agricultural theme, it’s a trophy sponsored by the state agricultural commissioner and its presentation was adorned with just a few of the various edible crops grown in the state. Peanuts, tomatoes, apples…it wasn’t the most seasonal display (Amanda noted that okra and turnip greens, both of which are currently in season, were missing) and our oh-so-iconic peaches were missing due to their season having already ended.
Well, let Inferior GSU have their cup this year, I say. We’ll be back for it next time.

How much Americans plan to spend
Americans are planning to spend an average of $115 on Super Bowl Sunday this year, an increase of 31% from 2022’s average of $88, according to a recent survey from LendingTree of 2,008 U.S. consumers ages 18 to 77. This year, six-figure earners plan to spend the most on the game, at an average of $246. Parents with children younger than 18 ($204) and millennials ($176) also top the list of…

Southern Miss: 2022 Lendingtree Bowl Champions
Southern Miss running back Frank Gore Jr. stayed close to the hurt – relished it, even.
The Golden Eagles' star endured back-to-back three-win seasons in his first two seasons in Hattiesburg, playing for four different head coaches. As he explained throughout the 2022 season, he knew that the perspective acquired from those trials would make the payoff that much sweeter when it eventually arrived.
Saturday night, Gore ensured he got that payoff. He dragged the Golden Eagles (7-6) by their collective ear to a 38-24 LendingTree Bowl victory over Rice (5-8) at Hancock Whitney Stadium in Mobile, Alabama.
Gore's heroics Gore did not merely set a Southern Miss single-game record by rushing for 329 yards and two touchdowns. He also set the FBS bowl record as well.
Just that contribution alone would not befit his importance to a team that has needed him to do just about everything this season, including lining up under center.
Gore also completed two of his three passes, highlighted by an 18-yard touchdown pass to Ty Mims that tied the game at 24 late in the third quarter.
He completed his outrageous performance with a 55-yard touchdown run, weaving in and out of defenders to put the Golden Eagles up 38-24 with 2:57 remaining and surpass the 300-yard threshold on the day.
USM cruises through first half, but Rice fights back Southern Miss looked well on its way to a nice, easy blowout victory in a game it was comfortably favored to win by the sportsbooks.
The Golden Eagles went into halftime with a 17-3 advantage, having outplayed their opponents by a wide margin. But things are rarely so simple for Southern Miss, and they weren't Saturday night.
The Owls then rattled off three touchdown drives in the first seven minutes of the third quarter, helped by a Southern Miss fumble on its first possession of the half.
That put the Owls up 24-17, but they couldn't hold the lead for long.
Southern Miss defense locks down The Golden Eagle defense has been the team's rock throughout the season, and it showcased why after it was gashed for that trio of third-quarter touchdowns.
It got a vital stop on its next possession, then forced a turnover-on-downs with a stand inside its own 10-yard line as Rice looked to tie the game early in the fourth quarter.
The Owls then went backward on their next two drives. By then, the Golden Eagles had restored their two-possession lead, and the game was as good as over.

Bowl Previews: January 6
It’s easy to forget this one, but it’s the last non-Playoff bowl game of the postseason so let’s make sure to highlight it!
Lendingtree Bowl (Mobile, AL): Louisiana-Lafayette 10-3 (7-1) vs Miami OH 8-5 (6-2)
How the MAC Champion gets paired up with the Sun Belt’s 2nd best team in a bowl doesn’t make much sense to me, but that’s where we are.
Louisiana-Lafayette is quickly becoming one of the preeminent G5 teams outside of the AAC. The Ragin’ Cajuns’ only losses were to Mississippi State by 10 points at the beginning of the season and twice to G5 superstar Appalachian State. They handily defended their Sun Belt West division crown but obviously couldn’t quite surmount the Mountaineers, but they weren’t that far off either. It’s worth noting that ULL beat Ohio by 20 points in Athens, a far better margin than Miami Ohio’s 3 point win on the road.
The MAC was pretty bad this year, but somebody had to win it. That team was Miami. The RedHawks fared pretty poorly against a loaded non-conference schedule that featured losses to Iowa, Cincinnati, and Ohio State. But when league play began, Miami proved themselves. The RedHawks were a perfect 5-0 against the East Division, suffering losses only on the road to West opponents Western Michigan and Ball State. Miami then beat favored Central Michigan in the MAC Championship game to secure their first conference title since 2010.

Official Think Fast Run Fast Chad Powers 200 T Shirt
I remember a Official Think Fast Run Fast Chad Powers 200 T Shirt memoir — Beasts, Men, and Gods — by Ferdinand Ossendowski, a White Pole who fled the Bolshevik revolution through Siberia. He served in General Kolchak’s All-Russian Government before escaping through the Steppes north of Mongolia, and then participated in the government of that most notorious adventurer, the “Mad Baron” Ungern-Sternberg, who attempted to take over Mongolia to restore an imperial Khaganate as part of an imagined reactionary restoration of the Great Mongol, Chinese, and Russian monarchies in the interests of the “warrior races” of Germans and Mongols (a Baltic German, he considered the old Russian ruling class to represent Germandom over and against Jews and Slavs). Some of the things – the acts of desperation and madness, in which he himself was no disinterested observer – Ossendowski relates are harrowing. But this part struck me as very much making a point about what people think of the Steppe peoples, and of what (German-trained) nationalists like Ungern-Sternberg did (and would do again) to the Mongols. And, other things:

A Bahamas Bowl matchup between Miami University of Ohio and the University at Alabama at Birmingham will kick off the 2022 college football bowl season, which will feature 43 games and run through Jan. 9. The 84 teams that will participate in the postseason had their spots confirmed over the weekend after conference championship week. The Miami University RedHawks (6-6) will meet the UAB Blazers (6-6) at 11:30 a.m. EST Dec. 16 at Thomas Robinson Stadium in Nassau. That game will air on ESPN. UTSA, the No. 25 team in the final College Football Playoff rankings, will battle No. 24 Troy in the Cure Bowl at 3 p.m. Dec. 16 at Exploria Stadium in Orlando, Fla. That game also will air on ESPN. Dec. 17 will be the busiest day of bowl season, with seven games set to kick off between 11 a.m. and 9:15 p.m. Cincinnati (9-3) will play Louisville (9-3) in the Fenway Bowl on ESPN to launch that day's slate. Jackson State (12-0) will then meet North Carolina Central (9-2) in the Celebration Bowl at noon on ABC. SMU (7-5) will take on BYU (7-5) in the New Mexico Bowl at 2:15 p.m. on ESPN. The two College Football Playoff matchups will be Ohio State versus Georgia and TCU against Michigan. The College Football Playoff selection committee announced its final rankings Sunday on ESPN. https://youtu.be/QFDDrSO6nds?t=12 Georgia (13-0) held onto the top spot in the rankings for the fifth-consecutive week. The Bulldogs wrapped up their perfect campaign with a 50-30 win over No. 17 LSU (9-4) in the SEC championship game Saturday in Atlanta. "When you make the final four, whether you are 1 or 4, it really doesn't matter," Bulldogs coach Kirby Smart told ESPN. "What matters is how you manage the time building up to the [College Football Playoff semifinal] game." Undefeated Michigan kept the No. 2 spot. The Wolverines (13-0) beat Purdue (8-5) 43-22 in the Big Ten title game Saturday in Indianapolis. TCU (12-1) held onto the No. 3 spot despite a 31-28 loss to No. 9 Kansas State (10-3) in the Big 12 title game Saturday in Arlington, Texas. The Horned Frogs will now meet the Wolverines in the Fiesta Bowl, the first College Football Playoff semifinal, at 4 p.m. Dec. 31 at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Ariz. Ohio State jumped from No. 5 to No. 4 and will battle Georgia in the Peach Bowl, the other semifinal. The Buckeyes (11-1) lost to Michigan on Nov. 26 and didn't earn a spot in their conference title game. The Buckeyes and Bulldogs will kick off at 8 p.m. Dec. 31 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. Both semifinals will air on ESPN. "This whole thing is an unbelievable opportunity," Buckeyes coach Ryan Day told reporters Sunday at a news conference. "You just never know how these years are going to go. This opportunity wasn't available a few days ago, but it is now. "Last week, everyone was dying to have an opportunity to have a shot to go win this and now we do." The two victors from the semifinals will meet in the title game at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 9 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Calif. That game also will air on ESPN. https://youtu.be/FwrFxr_HZRs?t=1 USC (11-2) dropped from No. 4 to No. 10 in the rankings. The Trojans lost 47-24 to No. 8 Utah (10-3) in the Pac 12 title game Friday in Las Vegas. The Trojans will now face No. 17 Tulane (11-2) on Jan. 2 in the Cotton Bowl Classic. No. 5 Alabama (10-2) failed to advance to the College Football Playoff semifinals for just the second time since the system started in 2014. The Crimson Tide (10-2) will battle No. 9 Kansas State on Dec. 31 in the Sugar Bowl.
The No. 6 Tennessee Volunteers (10-2) moved up from No. 7, despite being inactive last week. They will meet Clemson (11-2) on Dec. 30 in the Orange Bowl.
