2019 Top Games of the Week: Week 15
It’s Championship Week! Yes, it all comes down to this. All 10 FBS conferences now have their end of season games, so it at least makes it pretty easy to do a top ten.
The Top Ten Games of the Week
10. Miami OH 7-5 (6-2) vs Central Michigan 8-4 (6-2)
The least important conference championship game has to be the MAC Championship in Detroit. The conference as a whole was completely underwhelming, absolutely lacking in quality. But hey, forget about that, we need to celebrate the winners here. Miami OH has been on hard times lately. The RedHawks have slowly clawed their way back to relevance and are playing in their first MAC Championship since 2010. Central Michigan has had one heck of a rebound season. The Chippewas overcame a rough start to make their first title game since 2009 in Jim McElwain’s first year at the helm.
9. UAB 9-3 (6-2) at Florida Atlantic 9-3 (7-1)
Conference-USA actually had a fairly interesting and competitive race in both divisions. UAB tied with Louisiana Tech atop the West standings but the Blazers’ 20-14 home victory gave them the edge. Bill Clark is a miracle worker and nobody talks about it. UAB is seeking to defend their title against the plucky FAU Owls. Lane Kiffin’s high flying squad is in their second C-USA Championship Game in three years. Florida Atlantic beat out Marshall and a resurgent Western Kentucky to claim the East and the best conference record in the league. They’ll enjoy home field advantage which could play a very big factor in this contest.
8. Louisiana-Lafayette 10-2 (7-1) at #21 Appalachian State 11-1 (7-1)
Appalachian State would be undefeated if not for a poor performance against rival Georgia Southern. The Mountaineers won the East Division pretty handily, just as ULL won the West easily. The two Sun Belt Championship Games have featured the same two opponents. App State already won in Lafayette in October, so I can’t imagine a different result in Boone.
7. Hawaii 9-4 (5-3) at #19 Boise State 11-1 (8-0)
Another regular season rematch which will probably feature the same result. Major props to Hawaii for winning their first ever West Division title, but I don’t think they stand a chance here. If Boise State hadn’t laid an egg to a mediocre BYU team, the Broncos would also be undefeated and going to Dallas for the Cotton Bowl. This is a rematch from the regular season, where BSU boat raced the Rainbow Warriors 59-37 at home.
6. #23 Virginia 9-3 (6-2) vs #3 Clemson 12-0 (8-0)
Congratulations to Virginia for winning their first ever ACC Coastal title. I’m so sorry for what’s about to happen. Sometimes success is rewarded with a kick in the teeth.
5. #1 Ohio State 12-0 (9-0) vs #8 Wisconsin 10-2 (7-2)
I wanted to put this one higher, but there’s just no need. Wisconsin had absolutely no answer when these two teams played in October and I can’t imagine the Badgers will be able to surmount this Buckeye team. We’ll have to wait for the Playoff before OSU gets a real challenge. Props to UW for beating Minnesota and repaying the Gophers for last year, at least.
4. #20 Cincinnati 10-2 (7-1) at #17 Memphis 11-1 (7-1)
The American Championship Game is a rematch from just last weekend. Memphis sealed their third West Division title in as many years with a 34-24 victory at home. Cincinnati ended up winning the East Division pretty easily after UCF was upset by Tulsa. The Bearcats are making their first trip to the AAC CG in the short history of the game. Memphis will certainly win the bid to the Cotton Bowl with a victory here, Cincinnati will have to make a better case than Boise and App State, but their relatively strong seeding indicates that they could get the nod as well if they win.
3. #7 Baylor 11-1 (8-1) vs #6 Oklahoma 11-1 (8-1)
I waited until Tuesday to post these because the Playoff rankings definitely matter with the level of importance here. I was ready to put this game at the top spot until I saw how the Ranking effect the situation. I was a bit surprised to see Oklahoma still below Utah. It implication here is that unless the Utes lose or we get some huge 59-0 blowout, the Big 12 Championship Game won’t actually put any team into the Playoff. Kinda strange, I’d at least pick 12-1 OU over 12-1 Utah, but that’s just me.
2. #4 Georgia 11-1 (7-1) vs #2 LSU 12-0 (8-0)
The SEC Championship Game could be the #1 contest depending on what you value. It’s definitely the conference championship game with the two best teams playing in it. I just get the feeling that LSU is going to win, thereby knocking Georgia out of the Playoff picture. I mean, Jesus, look what the Committee just did to Alabama. Don’t lose that second game. However, the entire Playoff picture will be turned on its axis should the Bulldogs win. That would certainly make things interesting, although it would likely put both SEC teams in the final four, just as the #3 and #4 seeds.
1. #13 Oregon 10-2 (8-1) vs #5 Utah 11-1 (8-1)
I’m trying really hard not to be a West Coast homer here, but come on, a lot is riding on the PAC-12 Championship Game. I know, I wasn’t expecting it either at the start of the season, or even halfway through the season. Utah is having their best year since 2008, and could be headed to the College Football Playoff if they take care of business here. I mean, it’s Utah, UTAH! If the Utes made it, they would be, by far, the program with the least tradition and resources to make the Playoff field, though Baylor could make a similar case I suppose. Hey man, that’s the seeding. Utah is on the bubble, if they take down Oregon (which they should do) and LSU beats Georgia (which they should do), that’s it.

FCS Game of the Week
I put the Playoff participants in a separate post, so here’s the other, often forgotten, conference championship game this weekend.
Alcorn State 8-3 (6-1) vs Southern 8-1 (6-1)
The SWAC Championship Game pits Southern and Alcorn State, two of the best squads in the HBCU football world, against each other. The winner gets to face North Carolina A&T in the Celebration Bowl.

Bowl Previews: January 6
It’s easy to forget this one, but it’s the last non-Playoff bowl game of the postseason so let’s make sure to highlight it!
Lendingtree Bowl (Mobile, AL): Louisiana-Lafayette 10-3 (7-1) vs Miami OH 8-5 (6-2)
How the MAC Champion gets paired up with the Sun Belt’s 2nd best team in a bowl doesn’t make much sense to me, but that’s where we are.
Louisiana-Lafayette is quickly becoming one of the preeminent G5 teams outside of the AAC. The Ragin’ Cajuns’ only losses were to Mississippi State by 10 points at the beginning of the season and twice to G5 superstar Appalachian State. They handily defended their Sun Belt West division crown but obviously couldn’t quite surmount the Mountaineers, but they weren’t that far off either. It’s worth noting that ULL beat Ohio by 20 points in Athens, a far better margin than Miami Ohio’s 3 point win on the road.
The MAC was pretty bad this year, but somebody had to win it. That team was Miami. The RedHawks fared pretty poorly against a loaded non-conference schedule that featured losses to Iowa, Cincinnati, and Ohio State. But when league play began, Miami proved themselves. The RedHawks were a perfect 5-0 against the East Division, suffering losses only on the road to West opponents Western Michigan and Ball State. Miami then beat favored Central Michigan in the MAC Championship game to secure their first conference title since 2010.
