That’s Just How the Story Goes
“Some people smile at the end of the day Some people laugh, I suppose But to me, there's nothing but gloom and despair That's just how the story goes “
Just finished watching the new Netflix version of A Series of Unfortunate Events. This stanza from the end of the song felt fitting.
I never read A Series of Unfortunate Events as a kid. Felt inclined, but never did. It was actually coincidence that I read the first two books before moving to Korea.(Incidentally, reading them led to another odd coincidence just before leaving, but that’s story for another time.) After the second book I decided to discontinue reading. As a kid I might have found the book alright (probably not), but reading them as an adult there is one major flaw that only the insistence of comparing the books to the new series can cure- the narration.
I don’t have a problem with narration, per se, in fact it can add a lot to a story when done right. In ASoUF, it’s just irritating. The narrator himself is alright, but the constant halting of the story in order to explain, what I feel, is a rather trivial word or phrase (especially as an adult when I know what it means, and furthermore, don’t agree with his definition. I will admit, however, that when I don’t know what something means, the brief pause to explain is appreciated. This is why I think I might have found the narration less irritating as a child). But seeing as how I am not a child, the constant stopping and starting is jarring.
On the other hand, as I continue to read the series and become accustomed to the narration style, the story itself becomes more bearable. So far my favorite Character is Charles. While he may be a pathetic pushover, he is caring and kind. And at least he’s not an idiot, like almost every other adult in every book so far who isn’t evil (I just finished The Miserable Mill. By the by, book three was what I was looking for on Saturday when I sojourned to the National Libraries).
On a lighter, less critical note, I like how they did the narration in the show. It’s charming and cute, and adds a great deal to the ambiance and story. So far, it’s really the only think I like. :I I really shouldn’t be so rude about this, but I don’t see how such large alterations to the narrative benefit the story as a whole. The tale Lemony Snicket tells works well in the books, and so do the finer details that drive the story from point to point. Changing those details just takes away from the original charms of the story.
That “lighter note” took an unintentional-nose dive. My apologies. I don’t dislike the story, just some of the rather ridiculous points the author makes.

A dream come true
I grew up reading a series of unfortunate events, and it’s bothers me that no one is thinking of PoC for the main roles. Why not? Daniel handler himself even said that the characters were not race written, and that he wants the directors to understand that. As a black actress myself, there’s very limited roles out there, let alone roles that played a big part in majority of 90s-00s born kids lives. I personally still haven’t gotten over the brilliance of Lemony Snicket ( Daniel Handler)! It would be a dream come true if to be cast in a major or secondary role in this series. I would LOVE for once to see my favorite childhood book series characters be portrayed as someone who looks like me, rather than some extremely pale, Lilly-white faced cast. I know the show would be amazing with an actual diversified cast. It’s time for a change.
