Put a pint in the freezer for tomorrow. Decided to do a homemade lemonade for an italian ice. Also zested two of the nicest lemons into it with my good veggie peeler (the one not allowed to touch potatoes, lol). I wonder if the zest will make a noticeable difference in depth of flavor.
Haven't been doing anything too revolutionary lately. Opened up a watermelon sorbet with fresh lime and mint yesterday, and a strawberry ice cream. Debating trying a red grape sorbet. Also want to do a peach and white wine slushie.
Daily tho I just do a protein shake ice cream for the roommate, usually. Chocolate protein powder, milk, collagen, super greens powder, and a whole over-ripe banana. I hate it (love under-ripe bananas, hate the taste of ripe ones), but she loves it, so I'll keep making it.

AUSTRALIAN NATIVE FRUITS AND HOW TO USE NATIVE FRUIT POWDERS
Tumblr media
Australia has a unique biodiversity with its native flora and fauna. Indigenous Australians have foraged this native flora and fauna for nourishment and sustenance for thousands of years. Australian native food is also colloquially known as 'Bush tucker'. It includes kangaroo, emu, crocodile, witchetty grubs, native fruits like Davidson plum, finger lime, quandong or spices like aniseed myrtle, lemon myrtle or native lemongrass. The availability of native bushfood has declined due to several factors since the colonisation of Australia including introduction of non-indigenous food and destruction of indigenous land for western cultivation.
The food industry, across the globe, is craving for new flavours, exciting tastes, local and regional cuisines. Australian natives have seen a revival not only in the food industry but also in the landscaping, health and cosmetic industry. Australian natives are a hero ingredient in Michelin star kitchens and popular TV shows like MasterChef.
Australian native food is adding a distinct ‘Australian flavour’ to regional and international cuisines. The popular Australian native fruits include Davidson Plum, Kakadu Plum, Illawarra Plum, Finger Lime, Sunrise Lime, Lemon Aspen, Outback Lime, Muntries and Quandong. These nutrient-dense fruits from the Australian backyard are now considered ‘superfoods’. Let’s take a look at some of these Australian native fruits and how to use their fruit powders in our daily lives.
DAVIDSON PLUM
Davidson Plums are native to tropical rainforests in northeast Queensland and northern New South Wales (NSW). They are dark blue/purple in appearance and have a reddish-pink soft juicy pulp. Davidson Plum has an earthy aroma of rosella and stewed rhubarb with floral, earthy and musk notes. It is slightly astringent and intensely tart in flavour.
Davidson Plum is one of the most nutritionally powerful native fruits and has a high level of antioxidants with anti-inflammatory properties. It contains vitamin C, vitamin E, lutein, folate, zinc, magnesium and calcium. It has properties that may support eye health, diabetes, age-related macular degeneration, obesity, autoimmune and cardiovascular health.
Davidson Plum fruit powder is available at Spice Zen’s online store. It is freeze-dried to maintain its flavour and nutrients. This fruit powder gives a beautiful rich red colour to the dishes. Because of its strong acidic taste, the Davidson Plum is rarely eaten as fresh fruit. Instead, you can use it to flavour acai bowls, muesli, cocktails, juices, protein shakes, smoothies, sorbets, salads and yoghurts. You can also add it while baking and in chocolates, desserts, ice-creams, jams, sauces and relishes.
It is excellent as a meat glaze for duck, kangaroo, pork, and curing fish. It can help balance flavours in sweet dishes or desserts. You can enjoy it in a refreshing cup of either hot or cold tea.
KAKADU PLUM
The Kakadu Plum is known by many names such as Gubinge, Bush Plum, Billygoat Plum, Murunga and Kabiny Plum. It grows in the subtropical region of Kimberley (Western Australia), Northern Territory and Queensland. It is considered a 'gift of the Dreamtime', and Indigenous Australians have revered this bush tucker for many years because of its culinary, nutritional, preservative, and medicinal properties. It has a yellow/ green fruit with an oval shape and when ripe, quenches thirst with a boost of energy!
It is known for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, antimicrobial, enhancing immunity and anticarcinogenic properties. It is a rich source of vitamins, folates and minerals. It also has a high potassium to sodium ratio, which can help reduce hypertension.
It boasts of having the highest Vitamin C levels of any fruit globally, with 100 times more Vitamin C than oranges, 5 times more antioxidants than blueberry, and the same amount of folate as in broccoli.
Spice Zen’s Kakadu Plum powder is made from wild-harvested plums of the Kimberley region of Australia that are freeze-dried to retain the flavour and nutrients. It has an aroma of stewed apple and pears with floral-musky notes. It is slightly astringent and tart in taste with a strong stewed fruit flavour intensity.
You can add Kakadu Plum powder to juices, smoothies, acai bowls, muesli, shakes, and sorbets. Sprinkle it over your salads, puddings or just add it to your water bottles. You can also use it in jams, sauces, relishes, preserves, baking, desserts, and ice creams. To add an exotic touch, you can sprinkle it over seafood and chicken. Add Kakadu Plum powder to your homemade face masks and cosmetics.
FINGER LIME
Finger limes grow in the lowland subtropical rainforests in southeast Queensland and northern New South Wales. This native lime looks like a regular lime rolled into a sausage shape and as the name suggests, is barely the size of a little finger. Yet this unusual citrus (whose skin colour ranges from emerald green, to purple, crimson and black) is a nutritional giant! Unlike regular limes, the inside of a Finger Lime is packed with tiny translucent caviar-like pearls, and when popped, each one releases a delicious splash of tangy flavour. This has earned the fruit the nickname "citrus caviar or native caviar".
Finger lime has an aroma of fresh, citrus, slightly minty with fermented notes. It is refreshing, citrusy, sweet, tart with some astringency and bitterness.
Indigenous Australians have used Finger Lime for thousands of years for its nutritious and medicinal properties and for warding off diseases. It was applied topically as an antiseptic on sores. Finger limes are rich in Vitamin E, Vitamin C, potassium and folate.
Spice Zen’s Finger Lime powder is freeze-dried to preserve the flavour and nutritional value. With its lightly bittersweet taste, Finger Lime can be used instead of regular lemons or limes in practically any recipe. It is a natural flavouring for sweet and sour dishes. It is ideal for dressings, sauces, jams and marmalades. Use it in ice cream, sorbet, cookies, cakes and fruit bread. Sprinkle it on salads, fruits and mild cheeses. It pairs very well with Dukkah.
You can add it to seafood dishes like grilled fish, prawns and oysters or scallops with vinaigrette. It also works especially well in mocktails, cocktails, gin, vodka, mojitos, margaritas, martinis and other beverages. So, sit back and enjoy your favourite delicacies with a tangy twist.
SUNRISE LIME
Sunrise Lime is a cross of Finger Lime with Kumquat and Mandarin. This fruit is harvested during the winter months. The Sunrise lime fruit is small, pear-shaped with golden orange colour. This fruit can be eaten fresh (including the skin), or in the form of fruit powder. It is sweet, sour with a hint of bitterness. The juice is tangy and fresh with delicate floral notes of kumquat.
Sunrise Limes contain high levels of Vitamin C and Vitamin E. They are also rich sources of potassium and folate. It helps increase immunity, boosts eye health and vision, leads to healthy teeth and gums, and lowers blood pressure.
Spice Zen’s Sunrise Lime powder is a freeze-dried fruit that has been ground to retain all the nutrients and flavour. It has similar uses to Finger Lime. It is great in fruit dishes, beverages, and preserves. You can also use it in your baked goodies like cookies, biscuits or fruit cakes. Or just add to your spice rubs for a sweet, citrusy tang to your dishes.
LEMON ASPEN
Lemon Aspen, also known as Pigeon Berry, is found in tropical and tableland forests of northern Queensland to north-eastern New South Wales. This pale lemon coloured fruit has a rigid star-shaped core and a thin spongy flesh. Lemon Aspen fruit has citrus, tart, strong lemon taste with a hint of grapefruit. It has a tropical citrus aroma with notes of spice and eucalyptus. It is best enjoyed when slightly raw.
Lemon Aspen is a rich source of folate, iron and zinc. It contains magnesium, calcium, and has a superior antioxidant capacity than blueberries.
This fruit powder can be used as a fruit flavouring in sweet and savoury dishes or to replace any other lime. As it is very strong, just use it in small amounts. It is great with seafood and poultry.
Spice Zen Lemon Aspen powder is a freeze-dried fruit to retain all the nutrients and flavour. It can be used in syrups, sauces, dressings, relishes, chutneys and jellies. Like other native fruit powders, add it to juices, smoothies, cocktails, liqueurs, cordial or fruit wines. It can also be added with other spices for a tangy flavour.
OUTBACK DESERT LIME
Outback Lime, also known as Desert Lime is true native lime and belongs to the Citrus Glauca family. It grows in semi-arid areas of southwest Queensland, western New South Wales and South Australia. They are like small green grapes and the tree does not have any thorns. The Outback Lime has an intense rich lime flavour with an aroma of stewed fruit and freshly cut grass.
Outback Lime is a powerful source of antioxidants, Vitamin C and folate. It is a rich source of calcium, folate, Vitamin E and lutein. It also has a high potassium to sodium ratio, which may help to reduce blood pressure. Outback Lime can be used in both sweet and savoury dishes just like other native limes but it certainly packs a punch.
Spice Zen Desert Lime powder is a freeze-dried fruit to retain all the nutrients and flavour. It has a pleasant, sharp, slightly sweet citrus taste. Use it to flavour sauces, butter, jellies, jams, dressings, mayonnaise, aioli. Perfect in cordial, syrups, liqueurs and beverages. Add a zing or balance the flavours in your cakes, cookies, yoghurt, chocolate, ice cream and sorbets. Drizzle desert lime burnt butter over oyster or your seafood.
Now that you know all about the Australian native fruits, which of these are you going to try?

Chugging Your Protein: It’s Whey Easier Than You Think
If you’re serious about working out and weight training, you need to be serious about your protein consumption. Protein provides the amino acids your muscles need to rebuild and get stronger after a training session. It also helps you feel satiated, which is useful when you’re trying to lose weight. As a general guideline, active folks should aim to get .5 to .8 grams of protein per pound of body weight each day. If you’re doing really intense barbell training, shoot for .8 to 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight.  Now it’s possible to get all the protein you need from eating whole foods like eggs, chicken, fish, meat, and even some vegetables, but it can require eating a lot of food, which means you’ll need to spend a lot of time preparing that food or paying a lot of money for someone else to prepare it for you. A supplement in the form of whey protein can help you hit your protein goals cheaply and with almost no hassle. Just a little decision making and commitment. Below I share how I chug my protein. Perhaps it will give you some ideas on how to chug yours. Which Type of Protein Supplement Should You Use? There are different types of protein powders on the market to choose from that have different benefits and costs: casein, soy protein, egg albumin, etc. Unless you have some sort of digestive intolerance or dietary restriction, you’ll get the best bang for the buck by using a supplement made from whey, which comes from milk and is a byproduct of the cheese/yogurt-making process. Whey protein has a higher biological value (the quality of the protein based on how efficiently the body utilizes it, which correlates with having a high supply of essential amino acids) than any other protein source, including beef, eggs, beans, soy, and casein. Whey comes in the form of both concentrate and isolate, and you want a protein supplement that is primarily composed of the latter. Whey isolate contains a higher percentage of pure protein than whey concentrate, and is processed to contain less lactose, carbohydrate, fat, and cholesterol. Isolate can also be easier on the stomach than whey concentrate. While a bit more expensive than whey concentrate, whey isolate is still relatively cheap. So for the most part, stick with a supplement that’s primarily made with whey protein isolate (make sure it’s listed as the first ingredient on the label). What Brand of Whey Protein Should You Use? So you should use a protein supplement that’s primarily whey protein isolate, but which particular brand should you get? My recommendation is to find the “cleanest” supplement that fits your budget. The kind of protein that you grab off the shelf at Walmart is affordable, but contains fillers, additives, and artificial flavors, colors, and sweeteners. While I’m not a purist about no-artificial-anything in my diet, when it comes to whey protein, which you may be consuming several servings of every day, you don’t want to be slamming back junk. That being said, your choice ultimately comes down to personal preference and what’s important to you. There are tons of whey protein isolate products out on the market with different tastes, textures, nutritional profiles, and price points. Here are 3 of my recommendations in 3 different categories of preference: Cleanest/Best Taste In pursuit of a clean whey protein isolate, I used the Jay Robb brand for awhile, which is made without anything artificial and gets its whey from the milk of grass-fed cows. But it wasn’t my favorite: it had too much stevia-based sweetness for my taste and it’s really expensive — about $1.80 per serving. I recently switched to the Ascent brand, and it may be my favorite whey protein supplement yet. Here’s why I like it: * Tastes great — I’ve tried the Chocolate and the Lemon Sorbet and liked both * No artificial colors, flavors, sweeteners (sweetened with monk fruit and stevia) * Isn’t very thick — with some brands you’ve got to mix the powder with 8 ounces of water to cut the thickness and the sweetness; with Ascent, you can use just 4 ounces and it’s still not sludgy or cloying * They make their own whey — most whey protein companies out there actually all source their whey from the same handful of big manufacturers, and then doctor it up with their own blend of colors/flavors; Ascent makes their protein in their own factory * They claim their whey is “the least processed protein available today because it’s filtered directly from high-quality milk” instead of being a byproduct of the cheese-making process * It’s unbleached (some companies bleach their whey protein to remove its naturally yellowish color) Though it’s not sourced from grass-fed cows, you’ll still pay a premium for the overall cleanness of this protein powder; nonetheless, its price — $1.20 a serving (for the 4-lb size) — is decent for a top quality supplement. Cleanest/Best Price If Ascent is outside your budget, but you’re still wanting a clean whey protein, check out Now Sports Whey Protein Isolate. It’s pure whey isolate (no concentrate), doesn’t have artificial flavors or sweeteners (sweetened with xylitol and stevia), and clocks in at a bargain basement $.80 a serving. The taste isn’t that great, but that may be an acceptable trade off for the price/nutritional profile. You can actually go even cheaper by getting Now Sports’ unflavored whey protein isolate: it has only 2 ingredients — whey protein isolate and sunflower lecithin — and it’s just $.70 a serving. Naturally the taste is not so hot, but some people find it tolerable, even on its own, and you can also add cinnamon or vanilla extract to it, or just mix it in a smoothie or with a flavored base. Best Price/Best Taste If affordability and taste are higher priorities for you than cleanness, then I recommend COR-Performance Whey Protein. You can buy big 5-lb jugs of it which last a long time and drive down the cost per serving to just $.64! COR-Performance does contain fillers, artificial flavors, and not just one but two artificial sweeteners, but as a trade-off (or really, as a natural consequence!), it’s probably the best-tasting whey protein on the market and it comes in flavors beyond your typical vanilla or chocolate. I used COR-Performance in the past and my favorites were Peanut Butter Marshmallow and Cinnamon Swirl. Experiment with different whey proteins (remembering to make sure that whey isolate is the first ingredient listed on the label), and see which best fits your personal matrix of budget, nutrition, and taste. And, honestly, don’t neglect the latter: if you hate the taste of something, compliance in drinking it is going to be hard to achieve. How I Drink My Whey Protein For me, whey protein is about convenience and speed. I don’t use any fancy protein shake recipes that involve blending in bananas, kale, peanut butter, and berries. And then cleaning and re-cleaning a blender a few times a day. Ain’t nobody got time for that. I just use water as the liquid base for my protein shakes. That’s it. No milk. The Ascent protein tastes great with just water. And I mix it in a standard mixer bottle with shaker ball; I have several of them so I don’t have to wash a lone shaker between servings and can just throw them all in the dishwasher at the end of the day. While I don’t make fancy smoothies with my whey protein, I do make quasi-meal replacement shakes with it. I follow an “If It Fits Your Macros” plan, so I need to hit a certain amount of carbs, protein, and fat each day. My shakes serve as a supplement in hitting those macros. I consume two of these shakes a day — between breakfast and lunch, and between lunch and dinner. To make them, I fill a shaker bottle half way up with water and toss in two scoops of Ascent whey for my protein. For my carbs, I’ll either add in ½ cup of brown rice flour or oatmeal flour. Or if I need to get some more fiber in my diet, I’ll do ¼ cup of brown rice flour and ¼ cup of hi-maize resistant starch (Which has 18 grams of fiber in ¼ a cup. Your colon will thank you. Or hate you.). For my fats, I’ll just toss in a tablespoon or two of olive oil, depending on my fat goals for the day. If I’m taking my shake post-workout, I’ll throw in a scoop of creatine. Shake everything up and chug it. Does it taste gross? Not really. But I have the palette of garbage-eating raccoon, so I might not be the best person to ask about the palatability of something. It gets the job done, and that’s all I care about. For me, my body is a machine, and a shake is just fuel. I’m looking for function, not a delectable delight. If I’m ever at the end of the day, and I’ve fulfilled my carb and fat macros but am short by 25 grams or so of protein, I’ll have a shake with just water and a scoop of whey. Boom. Macros accomplished. For When You’re Feeling Frisky: Diet Soda + Whey Protein If you’re looking to mix up your whey protein consumption and want to try something different, but still don’t want to bust out your blender, try using a diet soda as the liquid base — a tip I learned from my Starting Strength coach, Matt Reynolds. If you’re not into artificial sweeteners, you can make these concoctions with Zevia-brand sodas, though if you’ve tried that kind of soda, you know it’s passable, but certainly not as tasty as the “mainstream” variety. A few good combos:  * Vanilla whey protein + diet root beer = Root beer float * Vanilla whey protein + diet orange soda = Dreamsicle * Vanilla whey protein + Diet Sprite = Sort of like a key lime pie * Chocolate whey protein + diet root beer = Hard to describe. Tastes good, though! * COR-Performance Cinnamon Swirl + Diet Coke = Haven’t tried this one, but Reynolds recommends this “recipe” Be careful opening up the shaker top after shaking things up with diet soda. You’ll have a lot of built-up gas, and if you just abruptly remove the top, you’ll have a little mini explosion. Open slowly. Happy chugging! Best kidney hospital in India | best urology and nephrology hospital in banjara hills | ckd in children
Kidney disease can affect children in various ways, ranging from treatable disorders without long-term consequences to life-threatening conditions. Acute kidney disease develops suddenly, lasts a short time, and can be serious with long-lasting consequences or may go away completely once the underlying cause has been treated. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) does not go away with treatment and tends to get worse over time. CKD eventually leads to kidney failure, described as end-stage kidney disease or ESRD when treated with a kidney transplant or blood-filtering treatments called dialysis.
Children with CKD or kidney failure face many challenges, which can include
A negative self-image
relationship problems
behavior problems
learning problems
trouble concentrating
delayed language skills development
delayed motor skills development
Children with CKD may grow at a slower rate than their peers, and urinary incontinence—the loss of bladder control, which results in the accidental loss of urine—is common.
Causes Kidney disease in children can be caused by
birth defects
hereditary diseases
infection
nephrotic syndrome
systemic diseases
trauma
urine blockage or reflux
From birth to age 4, birth defects and hereditary diseases are the leading causes of kidney failure. Between ages 5 and 14, kidney failure is most commonly caused by hereditary diseases, nephrotic syndrome, and systemic diseases. Between ages 15 and 19, diseases that affect the glomeruli are the leading cause of kidney failure, and hereditary diseases become less common.
Symptoms The signs and symptoms in advanced chronic kidney disease may include the following:
Volume overload
Hyperkalemia
Metabolic acidosis
Hypertension
Anemia
Bone disease (termed osteodystrophy)
Cardiovascular disease
Anorexia, nausea, vomiting
Diagnosis
Dipstick test for albumin
Urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio
Blood test
Imaging studies
Kidney biopsy
Treatment Treatment for kidney disease in children depends on the cause of the illness. A child may be referred to a pediatric nephrologist — a doctor who specializes in treating kidney diseases and kidney failure in children — for treatment. Children with a kidney disease that is causing high blood pressure may need to take medications to lower their blood pressure. Improving blood pressure can significantly slow the progression of kidney disease. The health care provider may prescribe
angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, which help relax blood vessels and make it easier for the heart to pump blood
angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs), which help relax blood vessels and make it easier for the heart to pump blood
diuretics, medications that increase urine output
Many children require two or more medications to control their blood pressure; other types of blood pressure medications may also be needed. As kidney function declines, children may need treatment for anemia and growth failure. Anemia is treated with a hormone called erythropoietin, which stimulates the bone marrow to produce red blood cells. Children with growth failure may need to make dietary changes and take food supplements or growth hormone injections. Children with kidney disease that leads to kidney failure must receive treatment to replace the work the kidneys do. The two types of treatment are dialysis and transplantation.
Diet and Nutrition For children with CKD, learning about nutrition is vital because their diet can affect how well their kidneys work. Staying healthy with CKD requires paying close attention to the following elements of a diet:
Protein: Children with CKD should eat enough protein for growth while limiting high protein intake. Too much protein can put an extra burden on the kidneys and cause kidney function to decline faster. Protein needs increase when a child is on dialysis because the dialysis process removes protein from the child’s blood. The health care team recommends the amount of protein needed for the child. Foods with protein include
eggs
milk
cheese
chicken
fish
red meats
beans
yogurt
cottage cheese
Sodium: The amount of sodium children need depends on the stage of their kidney disease, their age, and sometimes other factors. The health care team may recommend limiting or adding sodium and salt to the diet. Foods high in sodium include
canned foods
some frozen foods
most processed foods
some snack foods, such as chips and crackers
Potassium: Potassium levels need to stay in the normal range for children with CKD, because too little or too much potassium can cause heart and muscle problems. Children may need to stay away from some fruits and vegetables or reduce the number of servings and portion sizes to make sure they do not take in too much potassium. The health care team recommends the amount of potassium a child needs. Low-potassium fruits and vegetables include
apples
cranberries
strawberries
blueberries
raspberries
pineapple
cabbage
boiled cauliflower
mustard greens
uncooked broccoli
High-potassium fruits and vegetables include
oranges
melons
apricots
bananas
potatoes
tomatoes
sweet potatoes
cooked spinach
cooked broccoli
Phosphorus: Children with CKD need to control the level of phosphorus in their blood because too much phosphorus pulls calcium from the bones, making them weaker and more likely to break. Too much phosphorus also can cause itchy skin and red eyes. As CKD progresses, a child may need to take a phosphate binder with meals to lower the concentration of phosphorus in the blood. Phosphorus is found in high-protein foods. Foods with low levels of phosphorus include
liquid nondairy creamer
green beans
popcorn
unprocessed meats from a butcher
lemon-lime soda
root beer
powdered iced tea and lemonade mixes
rice and corn cereals
egg white
sorbet
Fluids: Early in CKD, a child’s damaged kidneys may produce either too much or too little urine, which can lead to swelling or dehydration. As CKD progresses, children may need to limit fluid intake. The health care provider will tell the child and parents or guardians the goal for fluid intake.

Camu Camu: The Next Great Superfood
Tumblr media
Camu camu (Myrciaria dubia) is a beautiful, fruit-bearing plant native to the flooded areas of the Amazon rainforests. This is a superfruit you should know about! The round, plum-sized fruits contain more vitamin C than oranges and lemons, supporting your immune system. Yet it offers plenty of other health benefits![1] Camu camu and its powerful polyphenols also promote healthy aging and longevity, heart health, and weight loss.
Besides having one of the highest vitamin C content of any fruit on the planet, camu camu has an incredible nutrient profile. High in flavonoids, anthocyanins, and polyphenols, from quercetin to betulinic acid, you can't go wrong with this fruit.[1]
So just what is camu camu, where does it come from, and just how does it help in these health-boosting ways? Read on for more details.
A Tropical Fruit with a Funny Name
Sometimes called rumberry, camu camu grows in the wild in the Amazon rainforests, mainly Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, and Brazil.[2] This low-growing shrub thrives in swamps or along the banks of lakes and streams — places where the plant's roots and lower trunk remain submerged.
A member of the myrtle family (Myrtaceae), camu camu is related to guava, allspice, clove, and rose apple. Very tart and sour in its raw state, Native people living in the Amazon harvest the fruits from canoes. Only recently have people started to cultivate camu camu to sell to global markets.
In his book Tales of a Shaman's Apprentice, Ethnobotanist Mark Plotkin once wrote that a forest stand of camu camu is worth "twice the amount to be gained from cutting down the forest and replacing it with cattle." He believed local cultivation of camu camu holds promise for supporting local economies in the Amazon.
It's important to buy camu camu from an organic cultivated source, as overharvesting in the wild is becoming a concern.
What Makes Camu Camu A Superfood?
Camu camu has a wonderful array of nutrients that provide health benefits beyond mere nutrition. The berry pulp, seeds, and skin are loaded with antioxidants that protect the body from the cell-damaging effects of free radicals.[3] This has earned it a place alongside other functional foods — ones that provide benefit beyond nutrition.
Below are some details of why you want to add camu camu to your day!
Provides a Potent Dose of Vitamin C
Camu camu's nutritional composition is second to none. For starters, the fruit has a ton of vitamin C — also known as L-ascorbic acid. Along with acerola cherry, another tropical fruit, camu camu falls among the most vitamin C-rich foods on the planet.[1] Every 100 grams of fresh weight camu camu contains 1882 to 2280 mg of plant-based vitamin C, depending on the stage of maturity.[4]
Has Strong Antioxidant Power
Vitamin C itself is itself a powerful antioxidant, but camu camu contains several other natural phytochemicals that add to its free radical scavenging abilities.[1] It contains polyphenols, flavonoids, and more!
Polyphenols: Tannins, Stilbenes, Lignans
Camu camu also has some of the highest phenolic content of any fruit. Most people get their polyphenols from chocolate, coffee, and wine, with fruits coming in fourth and vegetables last. Change that up!
One polyphenol found in camu camu is a compound also found in rosemary, rosmarinic acid. It is similar to caffeic acid and acts as a powerful antioxidant in the body. Camu camu also has ellagic acid, another potent polyphenol known to promote a normal response to inflammation. Other beneficial polyphenols in camu camu include tannins, stilbenes, and lignans.[1] But flavonoids are the largest category of polyphenols — they're so abundant, they get their own description below.
Flavonoids: Anthocyanins, Quercetin & More
Flavonoids have numerous benefits, such as shielding the nervous system and heart from damage and promoting a normal response to inflammation.[5] A major flavonoid in camu camu is its anthocyanins, which you may have heard of. These are usually pigments found in fruit and vegetables.
The main anthocyanins in camu camu are glucosides, quercetin, and kaempferol.[1]Quercetin is something of a popular nutrient these days that promotes a normal response to inflammation. You can also find quercetin in olive oil, grapes, citrus fruits, and berries.
Loaded With Minerals
In addition to being a rich source of vitamin C and antioxidants, camu camu has substantial amounts of potassium, calcium, and magnesium, as well as trace minerals such as zinc, manganese, and copper.[1]
6 Health Benefits of Camu Camu
Like other superfoods, camu camu is a nutrient-dense food with many benefits. Below are the top four health benefits this tart fruit provides.
1. Boosts the Immune System
One of the things that makes camu camu so nutritious is its vitamin C content. As mentioned, it contains more vitamin C than any other known fruit on earth. And vitamin C provides protection against everything from seasonal sniffles to disease development.[5]
Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin. Your body doesn't store it in tissues if you consume more than the daily requirement. Make sure you get enough!
2. Reduces Redness & Swelling
Camu camu has a remarkable ability to ease systemic redness and swelling in the body.[1, 3] This ability was shown both for juice and seed extract. This was true for swelling — called edema — on the body by inhibiting nitric oxide production from white blood cells.
Experts identified betulinic acid as one of the main micronutrients in camu camu responsible for this effect — as well as vitamin C.
3. Promotes Healthy Aging
Your body continually balances exposure to free radicals in the environment (and those produced within the body) with the antioxidant capacity of nutrients in the foods you consume. Free radicals form, then antioxidants counteract the free radicals, keeping you healthy. Yet as you get older — or if you experience illness — your body may produce fewer natural antioxidants. Thus, there's a need for additional supplementation to keep up and help protect against disease, skin aging, and more.
Camu camu appears to protect cells against harm to DNA in cells. And of course, it counters free radicals.[1] In a nutshell, camu camu has anti-aging properties due to its high antioxidant nature, from vitamin C, phenols, and anthocyanins.[1, 3] As its many antioxidants and phytonutrients counteract the free radicals they encounter, your body is naturally stronger and healthier.
4. May Support Weight Loss
Camu camu may even support a healthy weight and body mass index (BMI).[6, 7] In studies, camu camu promoted normal levels of white adipose tissue.[1, 6] Consuming the fruit promoted normal levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL), otherwise known as "good" cholesterol. It also promoted normal total cholesterol, triglycerides, blood glucose, and insulin levels.[1, 6]
When these important compounds in the body are in balance, your body can excrete what isn't needed, as opposed to holding onto them — which leads to obesity and heart disease, among other things.
5. Promotes Healthy Skin
Vitamin C is not just an antioxidant that boosts immune health. It plays an essential role in making collagen and healing wounds.[5] Collagen is a protein that supports the elasticity of skin, muscles, and connective tissues like tendons, ligaments, and joints.
Since camu camu has such high levels of vitamin C, it supports healthy collagen production and skin health.
6. Supports a Healthy Heart
A healthy heart goes hand in hand with many of the other features already discussed.[4] When you have balanced, healthy cholesterol levels, your heart and entire cardiovascular system stay healthy. Camu camu promotes normal levels of total and good (HDL) cholesterol.[6]
By promoting normal levels of blood glucose, camu camu also supports heart health.[6] High blood sugar is often associated with the development of diabetes, and keeping blood sugar and insulin in check is an integral part of keeping your overall metabolic system healthy, which includes your heart.
Best Ways to Take Camu Camu
According to a Spanish study, camu camu is used as a juice and to flavor ice creams. The Japanese use the camu berries commercially, adding it to both food and cosmetics. Very few people actually eat camu camu raw — and most of those who do live in the Amazon where the plant grows. Most people consume the fruit in juice, puree, or pulp form.
Lisa Q., a certified raw foods educator, enjoys the variety camu camu adds to her smoothies, plant-based sorbets, and other raw vegan dishes. "It has a subtle tartness that adds an interesting twist to dishes," she says. "Even when you enjoy eating the same dish all the time, it's fun to switch things up."
Below are the main ways to consume camu camu.
Powder
Most people consume the fruit in juice, puree, or pulp form. However, the powder can also be added to a variety of foods.
Capsules
Camu camu powders make a great option for people who want the benefits on the go or do not care for the taste.
Liquid Extract
Global Healing's Plant-Based Vitamin C provides a potent source of this essential vitamin in a delicious-tasting Raw Herbal Extract™, derived from camu camu, Kakadu plum, acerola cherry, and other sources.
Serum
Those seeking a brighter, more youthful appearance might opt to apply a serum containing camu camu to their skin. Evidence suggests it may lighten mottling and promote healthy-looking skin.[2]
Points to Remember
Camu camu is a superfood with more vitamin C than any other fruit on earth. It also contains antioxidants such as polyphenols, anthocyanins, and flavonoids that promote healthy responses to aging, weight, skin and heart health, and of course, the immune system!
Indigenous people living in the Amazon, where camu camu grows native, eat the whole fruit in its natural state. Today, it's cultivated on organic farms and you can purchase it in raw powder form, liquid extract, or in capsules. Some cosmetic brands now include camu camu in topical serums and other skin products to promote a youthful appearance.
Because of its high vitamin C content, it's a great choice to get enough of that essential nutrient. Consider Global Healing's Plant-Based Vitamin C, which is sourced from organic camu camu, Kakadu plum, acerola cherry, and other fruits.

THIS IS JUST WHAT Superstar Nutritionists Eat per day
Tumblr media
Sure, it's great to get advice from experts, but learning what these benefits do for themselves is the best secret we wish in on. You want to know very well what doctors do to remain healthy, what instructors do to remain fit, and what nutritionists eat on a day-to-day basis to gas their lives. learn more here https://celebrityinsider.org
In that soul, we reached out to three top nutritionists, a person who has Gwyneth Paltrow's stamp of approval, for the rundown on just what a "day in the life span" is similar to.
Elissa Goodman
Bio
A qualified holistic nutritionist, Elissa Goodman created the cleanse program at the vegan hotspot, Cafe Appreciation, the famed ultimate goal of healthy restaurants in LA, and macrobiotic M Cafe.
The Skinny
I start my day with a solid probiotic washed down with detoxifying lemon drinking water on a clear stomach (I favor Dr. Ohhira Professional Power or Renew Life 100 Billion). As well as the lemon drinking water, my first drink of your day is my Detox Tonic (a mixture of Tonix Coconut Drinking water Kefir, George's Always Dynamic Aloe Vera, Bragg's Apple Cider Vinegar, the juice of 1 lemon, and a dash of cayenne). I take advantage of this to improve my disease fighting capability and to concentrate on gut health very first thing each day.
While my daughter gets ready for school, I'm making our matcha green tea extract lattes (I blend all the following in my Vitamix: 4 ozs. milk almond, 4 ozs. coconut dairy,1/2 tsp. organic matcha tea natural powder, 1 tbsp. of coconut essential oil, vanilla stevia, real vanilla natural powder, and cinnamon). Both of us love this grassy mix. It is not only filled with antioxidants, but it can help keep my energy and concentrate strong. The addition of the healthy excess fat (coconut essential oil) keeps me satiated until lunchtime.
To make sure that I'm getting my daily allotment of vitamins, nutrients, phytochemicals, and antioxidants, I usually have a green juice sooner or later in your day. My go-to mix is a simple formula with romaine (great proteins for a green), celery, cucumber, lemon, ginger, and turmeric main.
If I don't possess a lunch conference, I usually make a salad-I start with a big scoop of probiotic sauerkraut and place it over mixed greens, and I quickly add every vegetable in my fridge, drizzle with pumpkin, walnut or avocado oil, and Herbamare seasoning. I end with a scoop of the best homemade vegan Faux Almond “Tuna” Salad.
In the mid-afternoon, I typically see clients out of my office at home and I like to share a cup of adaptogen Tulsi Tea (holy basil) with them. I put in a few drops of Omica Organics Stevia.
Family dinner is crucial in my household and everyone understands the best is Millet Falafel with Avocado Relish & Roasted Asparagus Salad. That is my notion of a perfect plant-based meal-and one which my entire family enjoys! It feels great to have them up to speed with healthy eating which is one supper we all concur on.
Dr. Frank Lipman
Bio
Integrative and practical medicine physician, writer of THE BRAND NEW Health Guidelines, and creator of Eleven Well being Middle, Dr. Frank Lipman spent some time working with Gwyneth Paltrow, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Kyra Sedgwick, and Donna Karan
The Skinny
For breakfast, I have a smoothie with chocolates whey protein powder, avocado, blueberries, greens powder, and MCT oil. That's the best breakfast-it likes like dessert.
For lunch, I've organic poultry over a kale salad with roasted brussels sprouts.
Supper is same-protein and vegetables. ONCE I used to consume more grains, fruits, and sweets, I ran into trouble. I gained weight and my blood sugar was too much. Now I'm careful to remain away from sugars. In this manner of eating works far better for me.
For snacks, I might have a little dark chocolate or some chocolate chia seed pudding. We have a great formula at the wellbeing middle: 1 can coconut dairy, 3 tbsp. chia seed products, Stevia to flavor, 2 tbsp. natural cacao natural powder, 1/2 ripe avocado, and 1 tbsp. butter almond. Spin all elements through the Vitamix, and then allow it to sit down in the refrigerator for thirty minutes before providing. When people be concerned that eliminating glucose will feel just like deprivation, I just talk about this formula with them-it's delicious.
Lisa DeFazio
The Bio
Lisa DeFazio, MS, RD, is a respected nutritionist and healthy lifestyle expert, and on-air tv host that has consulted for Freshology (the food delivery service loved by J.Lo), Perez Hilton, and Form.
The Skinny
When I up wake, I start my day with an espresso and almond dairy creamer (I like the Vanilla Almond dairy creamer by Califa Farms). It likes just like a vanilla latte. I want my espresso and I love to awaken gradually while enjoying it, watching the news headlines, and returning email messages. I am not a breakfast time person. I can't stand to consume at 8 a.m. I do not pressure myself to consume because it is 8 a.m. and many people are eating breakfast time. I eat when I'm starving. I have a 9-year-old child, so I need to get him ready and drop him off at college.
After, I get back and also have juice or a smoothie. I get ready-made juices, like Development Protection, or make a smoothie with banana, almond dairy, vanilla protein natural powder, and a tablespoon of almond butter. I am given by its energy. EASILY eat a lot of carbs each day, I shall get sleepy.
Lunchtime is a salad with romaine lettuce, cherry tomato vegetables, diced chicken white meat, slivered almonds, raisins, cucumber, and a diced apple. I like balsamic vinaigrette dressing, and I might toss in a few simple croutons for crunch. I choose the basic crostini from the bakery and break them up as croutons. Or I'll have a turkey cover. These options keep me energized without weighing me down.
I have a snack only when I'm hungry. I buy ready-to-eat cleaned and slice veggie platters in the marketplace. I like jicama sticks, therefore I treat on that with hummus, or an orange, or Snapea Crisps.
ONCE I was single, supper was at 8, however now that I have a son and a spouse, supper reaches 6 p.m. I make four times weekly. I like to grab rotisserie poultry from the manufacturer (Gelsons is the best). Then, I make steamed broccoli, drizzle with essential olive oil and just a little garlic clove sodium, and rice. Another supper is pan-fried flank steak, oven-roasted potatoes, and a salad. I have protein always, starch, and veggie. AFTER I don't feel just like cooking food, I grab smooth tacos from Poquito Mas or Teriyaki Salmon Veggie Bowls from an area restaurant called Yogi's Barbeque grill. After supper, I do not eat a great deal as leading to putting on weight. EASILY need something nice, I would eat Red Vines licorice, fruit-juice bars, coconut or sorbet gluten-free macaroon.
Overall, I follow a dairy-free, mainly gluten-free Mediterranean diet-I'm Armenian and Italian so it is what I ate growing up. I like cheese and snow cream, however when I eat it I use in acne around my chin and throat, and I get bloated. THEREFORE I avoid all dairy products and my pores and skin are clear. I think better overall, much less tired once I avoid gluten, but sometimes I crave pasta or people from France pieces of bread, therefore I just eat it. I shoot for 1400 to 1600 calorie consumption each day, but I don't record my food. I could keep the monitor in my mind and estimation.
I don't consume alcohol. Wines provide me a headache and i think such as a zombie the very next day. Sometimes I'll have a margarita or cup of wines if I'm in the feeling, but usually, I'm the specified driver. I order cranberry juice with a lime often. Truthfully, as it pertains to beverages, I make an effort to have a container of drinking water in the automobile, therefore, i stay hydrated. I'll have an intermittent Sprite or Snapple Peach Tea. I avoid diet drinks-I only need the standard with sugars. The artificial sweeteners (Splenda, sucralose, aspartame, etc.) make me bloated and crave glucose. I think it's alright to involve some sugars if you work it into the daily calories.

Stocking your fridge with nourishing essentials is the first step to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Since fruits like lemons, grapes, and apples are already regulars in most kitchens—we’re taking the spotlight off these common fruits and highlighting three unique products to pick up the next time you’re at the grocery store (or ordering your list through a delivery service). Learn why you should add these three superfruits to your diet today.
Goji Berries
Goji berries are a sweet-and-sour berry that can be eaten raw, dried, or in liquid or powder form. They contain high levels of antioxidants and fiber, are low in calories, and are naturally fat-free. The fruit contains strong amounts of beta carotene, along with other nutrients that help with eye and skin health. An easy way to incorporate goji berries into your daily diet is by adding them to your next acai bowl, or snacking on the berries pre-workout to energize and maintain stamina.
Jackfruit
Jackfruit is an exotic fruit packed with a variety of nutritious benefits. Antioxidants found in this fig destroy free radicals in the body, help to slow down skin aging, and aid in repairing UV damage. The jackfruit’s high protein content is often used as a meat substitute in vegan dishes (think: pulled “pork”), since its cooked and shredded texture is similar.
Mangosteen
Mangosteen is a soft and creamy tropical fruit with a tangy and sugary flavor. It’s a good source of vitamin C and supports the body in producing leukocytes, the white blood cells that protect against infectious diseases. Mangosteens also contain powerful cell-booster antioxidants called xanthones (found mainly in the rind), which help repair and protect the health of your cells and support many of the body’s vital functions. Eat them raw (add them into your next fruit salad) or in juice form. If you’re looking for a dessert option, mangosteen makes a delightful sorbet flavor.

12 Healthy (& Guest-Worthy) Summer Desserts
New Post has been published on http://healingawerness.com/news/12-healthy-guest-worthy-summer-desserts/
12 Healthy (& Guest-Worthy) Summer Desserts
That back-to-school feeling may be in the air, but I insist… summer is not over. I repeat. It is not over! To prove it, we’re doing all of the grilling and entertaining we can at our house. Summertime wouldn’t be the same without ice cream, cobblers, and other classic warm-weather treats so I’ve been on the hunt for light, fresh summer desserts that are guest-approved. I thought I’d share our favorites so far.
Healthy Dessert Ingredients
Summer is the perfect time to indulge in a little dessert since nature gives us plenty of sweet treats in season. Fresh berries, hand-picked peaches, and other fruits are tastiest during the warmer months. Many local farms and farmer’s markets have these organic fruits available at relatively inexpensive prices.
As with all of my recipes, I try to keep things simple because they allow me more time with my family (and less time standing over a hot oven). Plus, easy dessert recipes are a great way to get the kids involved in making (and eating) healthy treats.
I keep my pantry full of these healthy ingredients for when we crave something sweet. Learning to use healthy ingredients to enhance recipes, or to act as substitutes for other not-so-healthy ingredients, is easy to do and not as expensive as you might think. Making the switch to a healthier lifestyle (that includes desserts) is much easier when you have these ingredients on hand.
Avocado – nutrient-dense and a great source of ‘good’ fats
Almond flour – an energy-boosting source of healthy fats
Coconut flour – a low-fat, gluten-free grain alternative
Coconut milk – a dairy-free alternative for milk and creams
Maple syrup/honey – antioxidant-rich natural sweeteners
Coconut sugar – a natural sweetener containing vitamins and minerals
Stevia – a low-calorie natural sweetener. Read more about my take on it in this post.
Eggs – binds ingredients while adding protein
Heavy whipping cream/butter – vitamin-rich and adds a creamy texture. Use grass-fed dairy if possible.
Coconut oil – a dairy-free, anti-inflammatory alternative to butter
Cocoa powder – a great way to get that antioxidant-rich chocolate flavor without added sugars
Many of these can be found at local grocery stores or online from Amazon or my favorit, Thrive Market.
12 Healthy & Easy Summer Desserts
These are some of my family’s favorite summer desserts. Whether you are looking for a summertime treat to make with the kids or decadent desserts to serve at your next outdoor gathering, you will certainly find a tasty and nutritious option here!
Homemade Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream
This recipe puts a healthy twist on one of my favorite summertime treats. Avocados and coconut milk create a creamy base, while peppermint extract adds that familiar (and refreshing!) minty flavor.
My kids love to help me whip this up. From start to finish, the process is easy with an ice cream maker. But, if you don’t have one, just freeze the mixture and stir it every half an hour until it reaches the desired consistency.
No-Bake Raspberry Chocolate Pie
This is one of my all-time favorite recipes! Cocoa powder, raspberries, almonds, and honey create a healthy (and decadent) summer treat that children and adults will love.
Follow the recipe for a large pie, or use single serve dishes. I’ve made this no-bake dessert recipe in pint-sized mason jars for summer dinner parties and it was a big hit. You can also use strawberries instead of raspberries for am early summer variation.
Fruit Smoothie Sorbet
This sorbet is a refreshing summer dessert without the added sugars and artificial ingredients of store-bought treats. Fresh (or frozen) fruit, one banana, and a cup of coconut milk are all you need to whip this up.
You can use an ice cream maker, but I just use my blender. My kids love coming up with new flavor combinations. It’s a great way to get them to try different fruits, too.
Crock Pot Cheesecake
This recipe makes a delicious and healthy cheesecake base without heating up the house with the oven. The grain-free crust is made with almonds or pecans, while the cheesecake is sweetened with stevia or honey (you choose!).
Cheesecake is versatile and can be adapted to fit the season. Top it with fresh blueberries or add strawberries and drizzle with a dark chocolate sauce for a summery twist.
10-Minute Peach Cobbler
This recipe is a seasonal favorite at my house. It is easy to throw together and utilizes fresh peaches and almond flour to create a grain-free cobbler. Top this cobbler with a healthy whipped topping made from heavy whipping cream and stevia for that classic peaches and cream taste.
I love that I can use this recipe to make a single serving or enough for 10 people to enjoy. When peaches aren’t in season, I substitute berries and other soft fruits in their place.
Chocolate Coconut Clusters
These simple coconut clusters are easy to make and almost taste too good to be healthy (but, I promise, they are). Coconut, almond butter, and chocolate is a perfect combination of sweet, savory, and creamy. They are full of healthy fats and sweetened with antioxidant-rich dark chocolate.
My kids always want to help with these, and I often catch them sneaking bites in the process. These are perfect to have on hand for a healthy snack, but they are decadent enough to serve as a dessert, too.
Healthy Panna Cotta
Panna cotta is Italian for “cooked cream” and has a pudding-like texture. This recipe is dairy-free (although you can substitute dairy milk if you prefer) and calls for honey and maple syrup to sweeten it up. A key ingredient in panna cotta is gelatin. Grass-fed gelatin is a healthy source of protein and can soothe the digestive tract.
I love the versatility of this recipe. Dress it up with caramel or chocolate sauce for special occasions, or keep it simple with summer berries and nuts for a nutrient-dense treat.
Healthy Butter Pecan Ice Cream
Vanilla ice cream is good, but butter pecan is better. This recipe is filled with healthy fats (the kind we need for a happy brain) and sweetened with natural sweeteners. Who knew ice cream could taste this good, and be good for you (in moderation, of course)?
This recipe can even be made dairy-free by replacing the butter with coconut oil. Using homegrown pecans from the local farmers market makes this treat extra special.
Berry Cream Bars
This recipe is a bit more involved than the others listed here, but I couldn’t resist sharing it with you. These bars are delicious!
With dates, honey, coconut, raspberries and blackberries, this recipe makes a delicious and healthy summer treat. I imagine you could substitute blueberries and strawberries for the raspberries and blackberries, too.
Paleo Avocado Brownies
Sometimes I just need a fudgy, chocolate brownie. That’s why I created this grain-free brownie recipe with avocados and dairy-free dark chocolate.
This recipe is rich in nutrients and antioxidants and naturally sweetened with honey. Add nuts for an additional protein boost.
For a fun, summery dessert add fresh or dried edible flowers (daisies, violets, lavender, calendula, or chamomile, for example) either in the mix or as a garnish. If adding them into the mix, make sure to finely crush the flowers.
Strawberry Coconut Milk Ice Cream
Making strawberry ice cream at home is one of my favorite ways to use fresh strawberries. Egg yolks and coconut milk add protein, while honey and strawberries naturally sweeten the creamy base. Add a banana, peanut butter drizzle, homemade marshmallows, coconut cream or whipped cream for a healthy strawberry banana split.
This ice cream won’t be as bright pink as store-bought ones that use artificial dyes. If you still want that bright pink hue, you can try a natural food dye.
Paleo Lemon Blueberry Cake
Better than strawberry shortcake, this lemon blueberry cake combines the light and refreshing flavors of summer together perfectly. Fresh (rather than frozen) blueberries and plenty of lemon juice make this cake delicious and healthy. It’s also grain and dairy-free, which I love.
Although this recipe is a little more involved, it is totally worth the extra effort. It would be perfect for a summer brunch or afternoon coffee date with friends.
Coconut Mango Popsicles
These healthy popsicles are a great frozen treat for hot summer days, but they’re also great for digestion! With coconut water kefir as the base, these offer probiotics as well as electrolytes. They’re so easy to make the kids often make them all by themselves.
If you don’t want to wait, you can skip the fermentation step and use plain coconut water. You’ll miss the probiotic benefits but will still have a tasty and healthy treat.
Fresh Fruit
While this isn’t exactly a recipe, I think it’s worth including. I love that my kids enjoy fruit so much and don’t need additional sweets all the time. Fresh fruit is one of our favorite desserts, especially when the fruit is fresh and in season. We like to have fresh berries, sliced peaches, and watermelon for summertime treats. Don’t forget a sprinkle of cinnamon for extra antioxidants!
Easy Summer Desserts for Summer Memories
