'Innocence wasn't meant for us'
They are rough around the edges, smoke curling from their mouth and eyes hidden by shades. They laugh loud and harsh and cry silent and small. Their fists are balled up in the pocket of their leather jacket and they smile sharp with glinting teeth.
There is no path they won't walk on for their friends, be it steep or narrow. Their loyalty is written in the blood spilt for the one they love and their tongue is riddled with all sorts of little white lies.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I thought I'd try making a playlist for a character today, perhaps this character speaks to you. Perhaps you've already written them in your own way...
Regardless, let this playlist speak the soul of a Character forged by fire and ice, by loss and hope and the love they have for their circle of people be it their friends or family.

Day 138: Crater Lake. 830 miles from the Northern Terminus.
I’ve been in Oregon for 120 miles now, and the psychological change is enormous. Oregon is only 450 miles long, compared to California, which is 1700 miles of trail. I’ll be back home in Washington before I know it!
Siead Valley was really small. To call it a town would be an exaggeration; there was a general store, a restaurant, an RV park, and that was it. Nice enough place, though. The walk from there to Ashland wasn’t bad, although it was smoky as heck with the Shelly Fire.
Ashland was nice, a real proper town with a Safeway and everything. I got a pack of day old cinnamon rolls for $1.50, stayed at a somewhat grimy motel, and set out the next day into Oregon proper.
The trail in Oregon is generally flat, and it doesn’t have a ton of great views. It mostly looks like the picture up above. It’s nice forest, but it’s just forest, so you end up walking pretty fast. I’m touching 30 miles per day now.
I did get some very nice views of Mount McLoughlin. I also bagged my first peak (i.e. took a side trip to go up a mountain), Holbart Bluff, so I can scratch that off my bucket list.
I spent some time at the brown mountain shelter…
Saw a sunset at Fish Lake…
And finally got to Crater Lake! I learned all about it’s formation and history. If anyone doesn’t know, there was a big volcano that exploded 8000 years ago, it collapsed in on itself, and now there’s a lake there.
I got to see my family at Crater Lake, too. My parents came down to visit, and my brother works here. Unfortunately, my trip has been derailed again. The Red Fire, Trail Fire, and Lemolo Fire have closed the trail for the next 70 miles, so I’ll have to skip up.
Little skips like that don’t bother me so much. I don’t view the trail as a checklist, it’s an adventure. You don’t have to hit every it of the trail, you just have to get as much as you can. And if there’s a fire, you get out of the way.
What does bother me is the Easy Fire. It’s up in Washington, near the Canadian Border, and it’s already closed some of the PCT. I told myself that if I couldn’t make it to the Northern Terminus for some reason, I would be okay with that. I was definitely lying to myself. I want my adventure to have a satisfying conclusion, but unfortunately I don’t live in a book. It’s entirely possible that a car will come pick me up at some deserted road in Washington, take me home, and I’ll be done with the trail without touching the Canadian Border. I could come back next year, but it wouldn’t be the same. I don’t know.
Well, enough doom and gloom. Washington is still a ways away, and I’m going to enjoy Crater Lake while I’m here. Peace!

The first month of the year is over already. And I'm sick. Again. After about 4 years of avoiding it, I finally succumbed to Covid. Ugh. (Good thing I usually write favorites in advance.) Other than that, video games dominated my January.
Palia: Palia is a free game that's a mix of MMO and farm sim. The thing that keeps me from MMOs is usually the pressure of the subscription price. But Palia has more going for it than the fact that it's free. I really like the characters and the world, and I enjoy the mechanics for the most part. Problem is there's horrible lag on Switch, so play it on PC if you can!
Blanc: I played this short but sweet game with my bestie and loved it. It follows a fawn and a wolf cub trying to find their families. You work together to solve puzzles. (Though you can also control both in single player, if you prefer.) And though it was a little glitchy at times, I appreciated this artistic game. 🥲
Paranormasight: This is a spooky mystery visual novel that I absolutely loved! I don't want to give away too much about the plot, but the style of this game is top tier for visual novels! (Even my more cynical bestie said it should be the "gold standard".) And the character designs are fantastic... save for some odd lip movements with a few. 😆 Also, I love Mio Kurosuzu. Quick warning: the game is not visually gory, but there are some pretty disturbing descriptions in a few situations!
Quantum Break: This game is about time travel and choices. Two of my favorite things in games! I loved the story and the unique ways it was presented, in both game and TV show form. Beth's part of the story was fascinating to me, as someone who has written some vaguely similar stuff regarding time travel. And I have a soft sport for Charlie, too. 😆
Mario RPG: I'm back to playing this and trying not to be sad that I'll eventually finish it. 😅 I struggle with favorite things ending, okay?
Honorable Mentions: Return of the Obra Dinn & Homebody.
Music Favs: My Photo in the Newspaper (Kate Miller-Heidke), 400 Lux (Lorde), The Girl (Woodes), Pale Lung & My Hand (Robyn Sherwell), Castles Crumbling (Taylor's Version), Artangels (Grimes), Heart to Hand (Lemolo).

I'll forever remember how I discovered ISIS—late at night in 2004, So Did We played at a radio station that no longer exists, and after hearing the second half of the song I was never the same again—but I can't for the life of me remember how I discovered Kauan. It was at the time of Sorni Nai, but how? And where? Quite possibly while scouring through Bandcamp, which would make them another win-at-a-lottery kind of find, but it's still a damn blank in my mind. Now that I think of it, the same goes for Lemolo.

Telehealth — Content Oscillator (Self-Release)
Content Oscillator by Telehealth
Telehealth, out of the Seattle suburbs, makes retro-futurist new wave songs out of cheesy synths and drum machines, resuscitating the nostalgic sounds of Devo, the Human League and Eddy Grant, while critiquing the cutting-edge technologies of right this minute. Alexander Attitude (possibly a stage name) and Kendra Cox of Lemolo make up Telehealth (you can hear her on “Blinding Hour,” for instance). Content Oscillator is as idiosyncratic as a two-person, end-of-the-world, disco-sci-fi outfit can be, and it’s a non-stop bop all the way through.
Why not start where the record does with “Idiot Proof?” Its hammering one-note riff that sounds like a migraine coming on, the walls closing in, the nightmare turning real, but the synths dance around it in giddy joy and the chorus is as bright and twitchy as the Comstat Angels. It is followed by a song called “Hype Tech Green Investment Guy,” all taut, preening, late-1980s sheen, but with pokes at Alexa, tech dudes and private equity bros. (“Not a republican/fiscally conservative/exploit the system/watch it rot/I work hard, I’m not a cop.”)
“Taliesin Grid” is likewise, full of bounce and menace. It is possibly relevant here that Attitude trained as an architect—Taliesin is one of Frank Lloyd Wright’s buildings—and concerned with climate change, but not to the degree that it gets in the way. Telehealth has Devo’s way of packaging techno-dread in shiny danceable wrapping.
The disc ends with anthemic “Yr Groove,” where the synths bubble over in anxious, end-of-times hedonism. It’s a pneumatic groove, powered by renewables, irresistible and anthemic and devoted to self-actualization even in the direst times. “If things are ending/doesn’t mean I’m free/the world is burning, let me be me,” crows Alexander Attitude, and yes, here’s to the oddballs running wild.

Autumn is upon us.
My friend made a bet with me to see if I could make a good autumn playlist without Taylor Swift so here is my attempt!
With the first week of September behind us and the weather cooling down, into Autumn we go. Soon golden-red leaves will fill the trees, sunsets and sunrises will be hued with mist, and the fresh scent of winter will approach, creeping in like a frost across windows at midnight.

Lemolo - High Tide (from Swansea) This has been getting a lot of play on KEXP (she is from Seattle so that’s not a surprise and I see she was a Top Ten in 2019). I also see that this song has also been used for the Netflix series Fate: The Winx Saga. Great single!
