Harry Gruyaert is considered a pioneer in documentary, fascinating colour photography in Europe. His pictures are well and carefully constructed, with a rigid composition – literally taken to the extreme.

Fred Herzog is one of the pioneers of freestyle, artistic colour photography. Perhaps pictures need the astonishment and curiosity of an immigrant, Fred Herzog, to document in colour that which is self-evident to the residents of Vancouver and not necessarily worthy of a photo.

Quem é Thomas Hoepker?

Thomas Hoepker estudou história da arte e arqueologia e, em seguida, trabalhou como fotógrafo para Münchner Illustrierte e Kristall entre 1960 e 1963, reportando por todo o mundo. Ele se juntou a revista Stern como foto-repórter em 1964.

A Magnum começou a distribuir fotografias do arquivo de Hoepker em 1964. Ele trabalhou como cinegrafista e produtor de documentários para a televisão alemã em 1972 e, a partir de 1974, colaborou com sua esposa, a jornalista Eva Windmoeller, pela primeira vez na Alemanha Oriental e, em seguida, em Nova York, para onde mudaram-se para trabalhar como correspondentes para Stern em 1976. De 1978 a 1981 Hoepker foi diretor de fotografia para a edição americana da Geo.

Hoepker trabalhou como diretor de arte para Stern em Hamburgo entre 1987 e 1989, quando se tornou um membro pleno da Magnum. Especializando-se no estilo de reportagem e usando cores elegantes, ele recebeu o prestigioso Kulturpreis da Deutsche Gesellschaft für Photographie, em 1968. Entre muitos outros prêmios por seu trabalho, recebeu um em 1999 do Ministry of Foreign Aid alemão por Death in a Cornfield, um filme na Guatemala. Hoje Hoepker vive em Nova York. Ele filma e produz documentários de TV, juntamente com sua segunda esposa Christine Kruchen. Hoepker foi presidente da Magnum Photos de 2003 a 2006.

Who is Thomas Hoepker?

Thomas Hoepker studied art history and archeology, then worked as a photographer for Münchner Illustrierte and Kristall between 1960 and 1963, reporting from all over the world. He joined Stern magazine as a photo-reporter in 1964.

Magnum began to distribute Hoepker's archive photographs in 1964. He worked as cameraman and producer of documentary films for German television in 1972, and from 1974 collaborated with his wife, the journalist Eva Windmoeller, first in East Germany and then in New York, where they moved to work as correspondents for Stern in 1976. From 1978 to 1981 Hoepker was director of photography for the American edition of Geo.

Hoepker worked as art director for Stern in Hamburg between 1987 and 1989, when he became a full member of Magnum. Specializing in reportage and stylish color features, he received the prestigious Kulturpreis of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Photographie in 1968. Among many other awards for his work, he received one in 1999 from the German Ministry of Foreign Aid for Death in a Cornfield, a TV film on Guatemala. Today Hoepker lives in New York. He shoots and produces TV documentaries together with his second wife Christine Kruchen. He was president of Magnum Photos from 2003 to 2006.
