5 of the Best Fall Foliage Hikes in the Poconos
There are fewer places better known for fall colors than the Poconos! Here are some of the best trails to take in the fall colors!
The Pocono Mountains, located in eastern Pennsylvania, offer a serene forested landscape, making it a popular escape from the bustling city life of New Jersey and New York. The mountainous region boasts lush greenery in every direction, charming small towns, and a rich cultural and historical heritage. Green and Yellow por Erie Limited Por Flickr: A Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway "Autumn Leaf Train" crosses the Lehigh River at Glen Onoko. The train was well-patronized on this overcast day as the leaves near peak color. The former Lehigh Valley Railroad bridge is still used by NS and R&N while the adjacent former Jersey Central Lines bridge now hosts vehicular and pedestrian traffic in Lehigh Gorge State Park. A Few Popular Hiking Destinations in Pennsylvania
Tumblr media
More than 61 million Americans enjoy the physical and psychological benefits of hiking each year, ranging from improved heart health to reduced stress levels. The United States National Park Service reports additional benefits, including enhanced muscle and bone strength, a lower chance of respiratory complications, and decreased anxiety. Americans living in Pennsylvania have a range of quality hiking trails to choose from. These trails support several outdoor activities, such as birding and biking.
Bird-watching enthusiasts should consider a trip to Presque Isle State Park in Erie. The park has 11 miles of hiking trails that offer beautiful views of the state’s only seashore. The trails pass the National Natural Landmark, a frequent landing spot for migrating birds.
Hikers interested in a multi-day trek should research the Quehanna Trail in Penfield. This 72.6-mile loop connects the Moshannon and Elk State Forests and offers some of the state’s most remote nature experiences. The trail passes through multiple conservation areas, including Parker Dam and the Marion Brooks Natural Area.
Groups that do not have time for the Quehanna Trail but still desire a hiking challenge can take on the Falls Trail System at Ricketts Glen State Park. The park’s trail system consists of 26 miles covering a 13,193-acre region, most of which are more challenging. However, the rewards are worth it, with the Falls Trail System providing views of over 20 waterfalls, including the 94-foot Ganoga Falls.
For a simple day on the trail, hikers in Pennsylvania should consider trails at Pine Grove Furnace State Park in Gardners, part of the Michaux State Forest outside Chambersburg. Set against a mountainous backdrop, the park’s four miles of looping trails circle Laurel Lake and Fuller Lake. Although Pine Grove Furnace State Park is an ideal destination for hikers searching for a standard or easy day, more experienced outdoors enthusiasts can take on the Pole Steeple Trail. This steep hike culminates in a panoramic view of the entire park and surrounding forest.
Despite the region’s copious hiking trails, Pennsylvania is home to just one national forest: Allegheny National Forest. Located in Marienville, the forest received federal recognition in 1923. The North Country National Scenic Trail serves as the longest of the state’s three designated National Scenic Trails and, at 96.3 miles, accounts for nearly half of the forest’s hiking trails.
Cyclists can head to the Jake Rocks Epic Mountain Bike Trail System in Warren, a system of stack-loop mountain biking trails in the Allegheny National Forest. Riders at different experience levels can find appropriate trails.
Few views in the state rival those found at the heights of the Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail in New Florence. The 70-mile Trail includes difficult sections, including challenging climbs and long, flat segments. Hikers at every skill level should schedule a day on the trail at Ohiopyle State Park, the site of countless waterfalls and scenic overlooks.
Hiking enthusiasts near Pittsburgh can find suburban hiking opportunities on the Montour Trail, a 63-mile, multi-use system spanning Coraopolis to Clairton. Other popular trails in Pennsylvania include the Great Allegheny Passage, the Heritage Rail Trail, and the D&H Trail at Lehigh Gorge State Park.

Discovering Pennsylvania's Hidden Gems: Off-the-Beaten-Path Attractions
Pennsylvania, known for its historical landmarks and bustling cities, offers much more than meets the eye. Beyond the well-trodden paths of Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, the state harbors an array of hidden treasures. These off-the-beaten-path attractions provide a unique and intimate experience of Pennsylvania's rich culture, natural beauty, and intriguing history.
The Mysterious Ringing Rocks Park
Nestled in Bucks County, Ringing Rocks Park offers visitors a curious natural phenomenon. The park is home to a boulder field where the rocks emit a ringing sound when struck. This geological oddity has puzzled scientists for years, as not all stones produce this resonant sound. Visitors can bring their hammers and create their rock symphony, making it a fun and interactive experience for all ages.
Aside from the fascinating ringing rocks, the park also features scenic hiking trails and a picturesque waterfall. Its tranquil setting makes it ideal for a peaceful day trip away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Whether you're a geology enthusiast or simply looking for a unique outdoor adventure, Ringing Rocks Park is a must-visit destination.
The Enchanting Crystal Cave
Crystal Cave, located near Kutztown, is Pennsylvania's first show cave and has been enchanting visitors since 1871. The cave's stunning formations of stalactites and stalagmites, along with its sparkling crystal deposits, create an otherworldly underground landscape. Guided tours take visitors through the cave's impressive chambers, offering fascinating insights into its history and geology.
Beyond the cave itself, the attraction includes a museum, a nature trail, and a mini-golf course. The museum displays artifacts and exhibits on cave science, adding an educational element to the visit. Crystal Cave is perfect for families, adventurers, and anyone interested in exploring the natural wonders beneath the Earth's surface.
The Quaint Town of Jim Thorpe
Often referred to as the "Switzerland of America," the town of Jim Thorpe offers a charming escape into Pennsylvania's mountainous landscape. Located in the Lehigh Gorge, this picturesque town is rich in history and natural beauty. Its well-preserved 19th-century architecture, quaint shops, and vibrant arts scene make it a delightful destination for a weekend getaway.
Jim Thorpe is also a hub for outdoor activities. Visitors can enjoy hiking, biking, and white-water rafting in the surrounding Lehigh Gorge State Park. The town's scenic railway offers a nostalgic ride through the beautiful countryside, providing breathtaking views of the Pocono Mountains. Whether you're interested in history, shopping, or outdoor adventures, Jim Thorpe has something for everyone.
The Mysterious Gravity Hill
Located near Bedford, Gravity Hill is a peculiar spot where the laws of physics seem to be defied. Visitors driving up the hill can experience the strange sensation of their vehicles rolling uphill when in neutral. This optical illusion has intrigued and bewildered tourists for years, creating a sense of wonder and amusement.
The surrounding area offers more than just the quirky gravity-defying experience. Bedford County is known for its charming covered bridges, historic sites, and scenic landscapes. A visit to Gravity Hill can be part of a more significant exploration of the region's cultural and natural attractions. It's an excellent destination for those who enjoy quirky roadside attractions and scenic drives.
The Tranquil Cherry Springs State Park
For stargazers and nature lovers, Cherry Springs State Park in Potter County is a hidden gem worth noticing. The park is renowned for its exceptionally dark skies, making it one of the best places on the East Coast for stargazing. On a clear night, visitors can see thousands of stars, the Milky Way, and even distant planets with the naked eye.
The park offers a range of amenities for amateur astronomers, including an observatory and designated stargazing fields. Educational programs and guided tours are available for those interested in learning more about astronomy. Beyond stargazing, Cherry Springs also offers beautiful hiking trails and a peaceful, natural setting perfect for relaxation and reflection.
The Historic Eastern State Penitentiary
While not entirely off the beaten path, the Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia offers a hauntingly unique experience. This historic prison, operational from 1829 to 1971, was once the most famous and expensive in the world. Today, it stands as a fascinating museum, offering tours that delve into its eerie history and the lives of its infamous inmates.
The prison's Gothic architecture and crumbling cellblocks provide a chilling backdrop for exploring the site's past. Visitors can learn about the prison's groundbreaking design, which emphasized solitary confinement, and hear stories about notorious prisoners like Al Capone. The museum also hosts special events, such as Halloween haunted house tours, adding a touch of seasonal thrill to the experience.
The Serene Ohiopyle State Park
Ohiopyle State Park, located in the Laurel Highlands, is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. The park's centerpiece is the Youghiogheny River, known for its exhilarating white-water rafting opportunities. Adventurers can navigate the river's rapids or explore the park's extensive network of hiking and biking trails, which offer stunning views of waterfalls and lush forests.
In addition to its natural beauty, Ohiopyle State Park is home to the historic Fallingwater House, designed by famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright. The house, built over a waterfall, is a masterpiece of modern architecture and a popular tourist attraction. Whether you're interested in adrenaline-pumping activities or peaceful nature walks, Ohiopyle State Park provides a diverse range of experiences.
The Charming Lititz Borough
Named "America's Coolest Small Town," Lititz in Lancaster County is a delightful blend of small-town charm and rich history. Known for its thriving arts scene, unique shops, and delectable local cuisine, Lititz offers a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Visitors can stroll through the town's beautiful streets, visit the historic Wilbur Chocolate Factory, and enjoy treats from the Julius Sturgis Pretzel Bakery, America's first commercial pretzel bakery.
The town also hosts various events throughout the year, including the popular Lititz Fire & Ice Festival. The nearby Wolf Sanctuary of PA offers guided tours where visitors can learn about the rescue and rehabilitation of wolves. With its combination of history, culture, and natural beauty, Lititz is a perfect destination for a relaxing and enriching visit.
Pennsylvania's off-the-beaten-path attractions provide a diverse and captivating array of experiences. Whether you're interested in natural wonders, quirky roadside attractions, or historic sites, the state's hidden gems offer something for every traveler. Venture beyond the familiar and discover the lesser-known treasures that make Pennsylvania genuinely unique.

Yeah, the unpredictability of the human mental state can definitely make things tricky. Not to sound like a broken record, but if things are too loud maybe finding a spot that's a bit off the beaten path could help with that. Which I have plenty of, like a nice spot over by the Lehigh Gorge State Park if you want something with a bit more variety. The trails there are great if you’re looking for a good hike, and there's plenty of space for Max to run around. Plus, the views are pretty spectacular this time of year. You end up going last weekend?
Tumblr media
I just wish it was predictable, honestly -- it'd be a lot easier to plan this kind of thing if I knew in advance how loudly my brain was gonna be buzzing on any given day. That sounds awesome though, especially the creek nearby -- I'm not sure Max would quite know what to do with himself, but he'd have a ball, ha. I'm always open to suggestions, for future trips as well as this one; I want to start getting out more regularly as the weather cools off a little.
