20240326: the History of LEGO Castle day 086. 6024 Bandit Ambush (1996, 60 pieces, 33 different parts)
Bandit Ambush is a small set built one a green 6x12 plate with a Large Ugly Rock Panel (LURP), several brown arches, green foliage, and light gray and black accents. The two minifigures in this set are brand new, as part of the Dark Forest LEGO castle subtheme. The first minifigure has a black hood, yellow minifigure head with brown bangs and longer side bangs, a brown quiver, a green torso with printed yellow v-neck, brown pouch on a black belt with a yellow buckle, and green arms, a brown bow with notched arrow, and plain light gray legs. The second minifigure has a brown hood, a yellow minifigure head with black bangs and mustache and facial scruff, a green forest person torso with printed maroon spikey collar, a cross-torso black belt, a black belt with yellow buckle, plain brown legs, a dark gray sword, and a brown forest person shield with a brown deer head with black antlers on a green background with a brown border. The only really unique part in this set, other than the Dark Forest minifigures, is the brown shield which only shows up in six castle sets (6024 Bandit Ambush, 6046 Hemlock Stronghold, 6054 Forestmen's Hideout, 6071 Forestmen's Crossing, and 6077-2 Forestmen's River Fortress) and two service packs (5184 Castle Equipment and 6103-1 Castle Mini Figures). Parts inventory for this set can be found on BrickLink or Rebrickable and a free download of the instructions is available on ToysPeriod.

A Whole New (Open) World - Five of the Best Open-World Maps in Games
The best stories give you a sense of adventure and discovery, and no medium can sell that feeling better than video games. Controlling your character in their journey and deciding their course on your own is the next best thing to actually being there yourself, and it’s in open-world games that this feeling really shines. Exploration is the name of the game here, with the best open worlds being vast and full of content to discover. What could be hidden around this corner? Or up that mountain? It’s easy to get lost in these grand adventurous maps, and that’s why I’ve gathered up a handful of great examples of the best open worlds in gaming. Sit back and enjoy the journey!
Tumblr media
Sable    Do you like the idea of driving around the outback just to see where you could end up, but would rather do it from the comfort of your own home? Sable is the game for you. The game is just about you, your bike, and the vast open desert. It’s as relaxing and non-linear as it gets, and the desert itself has enough variety in the environment to avoid feeling same-y. There are a handful of side missions to carry you between the small settlements scattered about, as well as collectables that are spread out across the map without being too hard to find. Climbing up the sheer cliffs and mountains dotting the desert is incredibly impressive and satisfying, and gliding safely down to the ground is a great way to scout out new locations to investigate. There’s also plenty of cool lore and worldbuilding spread throughout the game, making Sable both a relaxing and fascinating open world to explore at your own pace.
Tumblr media
Red Dead Redemption 2    Red Dead Redemption 2 proves that size really does matter - at least when it comes to maps. The Old West of RDR2 is absolutely massive, sitting at roughly 75 square miles of snowy mountains, thick forests, and open plains. The map is alive with countless NPCs and random events, from bandits ambushing you to helpless civilians that could really use a ride home. You could play this game for weeks, months even, and still find new random encounters all over the place. Exploring the West is surprisingly calming despite the dangerous wildlife and enemy crooks roaming about - the game features a “Cinematic Mode”, which allows you to sit back and enjoy the view while your horse follows whatever road you’ve put it on, without interrupting any story dialogue or important events that might need to happen on the way. The map of RDR2 feels real and lived-in, adding to the realistic nature of the game and its story.
Tumblr media
Pokémon Scarlet & Violet    The world of Pokémon has always been a vast and colourful one, and Scarlet & Violet opens it up for exploration like no game before in the series. The Paldea Region is the biggest map in the franchise so far, full of diverse environments populated by all kinds of Pokémon, new and old. The map is well-marked, letting you know exactly what is where, making it easy to figure out where you might want to go next. Certain locations can be quick-travelled to, but if you’re in the mood for exploration, the new legendary Pokémon acquired at the very beginning of the game, Koraidon or Miraidon, can be ridden like mounts to speed across the land! The map is heavily populated, so get ready to encounter new battles and wild Pokémon to catch every few metres - if you gotta catch ‘em all, prepare for a long ride across Paldea!
Tumblr media
LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga    What’s better than an open-world map? Twenty-four open-world maps! LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga takes the staple of LEGO games featuring open explorable hub worlds and brings it to a new level, with almost every single planet in the entire nine-film-long saga being a fully explorable map. Each planet includes dozens of collectables of various kinds, plus side missions and challenges that bring the total number of extra activities to over 1,000. That’ll keep you busy! From the desert sands of Tatooine and the frozen plains of Hoth, to the dark stormy Exegol and the towering skyscrapers of Coruscant, the game features every environment imaginable in beautiful brick-built detail. The various side missions will carry you from world to world, making the galaxy feel truly connected instead of being just a bunch of unrelated maps. If you’re a fan of Star Wars, LEGO, or just have that completionist instinct, the maps of this game will always have something for you.
Tumblr media
Sunset Overdrive    One of the most important parts of a good open world is the ability to navigate it in an easy and interesting way, and Sunset Overdrive is a perfect example, with one of the most fun and exhilarating kinds of mobility I’ve ever played with in a game. Grind rails and bouncy objects line the entire map - you could jump, swing and slide a dozen laps around the city, taking a new route each lap, and never touch the ground. Speed and momentum is the name of the game, and it’s tied well into all the various collectables and challenges found throughout the map, such as timed races and items that require tough platforming skills to reach. You even get bonus points for battling enemies in the most stylish fashion possible! Add all that to the colourful and cartoony style of Sunset Overdrive, and you’ve got the biggest adrenaline rush an open-world game could offer.
With that, our open-world exploration comes to an end. Which of these maps were your favourite? Do you know any other open worlds that belong on this list? Let me know! Reblogs and likes are appreciated, and thank you for reading!

20240131: the History of LEGO Castle day 31. 6054-1 Forestmen's Hideout (1988, 202 pieces, 59 different parts) The Forestmen's Hideout is such a great little set and is a mostly black two-story build with green foilage and two green trees, built on two green 6x12 plates. The second level has a blue plate covered balcony with a light gray wall and two triangular shields with a light brown deer head with black antlers on a green background with a brown border. Hinge bricks allow you to close or open the set, which makes it easy to move and great to play with. The two forest minifigures for this set include a green torso with a v-neck, green arms, a printed black belt with a yellow buckle and a brown pouch with plain green legs, and a green torso with a red collar and red arms and a printed black belt with a yellow buckle and plain green legs. This set introduces another of my favorite bricks, the 3x3 facet wedge brick, as well as the brown forest shields which are only found in five other sets (6071-1 Forestmen's Crossing, 6077-2 Forestmen's River Fortress, 6024-1 Bandit Ambush, 6046-1 Hemlock Stronghold, and 6076-1 Dark Forest Fortress) and two service packs (6103-1 Castle Mini Figures and 5184-1 Castle Equipment). Other new and unique parts for this set include the green whip or plant vine and the yellow 2x2 circle tile with printed blue and red target center. The target was only found in two other sets (6077-2 Forestmen's River Fortress and 1624-1 King's Archer) and one service pack (5184-1 Castle Equipment). This is also the first set to use the black inverted double slope brick, which only shows up in black in nine other sets between 1990-1998. Back of the box builds for this set include several different forest fortresses, including a neat little table with a green roof. Webbrickfreak made free downloadable instructions for the alternate build with the table on Rebrickable. This is another set where I think it would be absolutely fantastic to build it with brown instead of black to make it look more like a tree fortress. Even though I enjoy this set greatly, as one of the original sets from my younger days, building black-on-black is not generally my idea of a good time. I don't know why, but black is a lot harder for me to see and a lot harder for me to build with. This shouldn't have been a very time-consuming build, but it took me about twice as long as other builds in this project with similar piece count. Perhaps in the future, I will rebuild it in another color and post the results :) Parts inventory for this set can be found at BrickLink or Rebrickable and a free download of the instructions can be found at ToysPeriod. BrickSet has a list of the other sets designed by the designer, Niels Milan Pedersen.

20240203: the History of LEGO Castle day 034. 6077-2 Forestmen's River Fortress (1989, 359 pieces, 98 different parts) The Forestmen's River Fortress is the first castle set built on a 32x32 thin baseplate. All the sets so far have been built on multiple green baseplate with hinges to open up the set. The set itself is a light gray and black fortress in the middle of a blue plate with green foilage around the exterior and a black bridge connecting the fortress to a small stripe of green land. The entire back wall of the fortress opens with the use of the thin hinge plate and several brick hinges. A small brown and black raft patrols the area around the fortress, with brown 2x2x2 barrels used as the main part of the raft. The six minifigures for this set include: -Two green forest people torsos with blue arms and a blue collar, a printed black belt with a yellow buckle, and plain green legs. -Two green forest people torsos with red arms and a red collar, a printed black belt with a yellow buckle, and plain green legs. -One green forest person with a yellow v-neck, green arms, a printed black belt with a yellow bucklet and a brown pouch, and plain green legs. -One Lion Knight with a red torso and blue arms and a gold lion on a blue triangular shield with a gold outline and red legs. Unique or rare parts: -This set introduced the light gray 2x4x2 string holder, found only in this set and a 1997 Town set (6486-1 Fire Engine). -The light gray corner wall with dark gray stone print was only found in two other sets, 6062-1 Battering Ram (1987) and (6074-1 / 10039-1 Black Falcon's Fortress (1986 / 2002). -The brown forest shields are only found in five other sets (6054-1 Forestmen's Hideout, 6071-1 Forestmen's Crossing, 6024-1 Bandit Ambush, 6046-1 Hemlock Stronghold, and 6076-1 Dark Forest Fortress) and two service packs (6103-1 Castle Mini Figures and 5184-1 Castle Equipment). -The target was only found in two other sets (6054-1 Forestmen's Hideout and 1624-1 King's Archer) and one service pack (5184-1 Castle Equipment). Back of the box, top flap, and other build ideas from the instruction manual include: -A plain light gray fortress on the water. -A tree with an observation platform on top. -A round-ish tree with plenty of foilage. -A fortress with two black towers in front of a light gray fortress compound. -A tree with the forest people right next to a two story light gray castle wall with the Lion Knight guard on it. -A light gray bridge. While this set wasn't one of my originals when I was younger, my sister-in-law sent me all her and her brother's LEGO from when they were younger and this set was in there. I think this is probably the least humane of all the dungeons and jail cells we've seen in the castle builds so far, as the Lion Knight is trapped in the water at the base of the fortress. There's no way to open the jail and I guess prisoners just have to wait for someone to pull them out of the water to get them out of it :) This is a very cool, very fun build, though with older instructions, the struggle is very real to make sure you put everything in its correct place and didn't miss anything. There's not even a parts inventory with these older sets like there are with the newer sets and their instruction manuals. Parts inventory for this set can be found at BrickLink or Rebrickable and a free download of the instructions is available at ToysPeriod. You can also find some of the other sets designed by this designer, Steen Sig Andersen, on BrickSet.

20240330: the History of LEGO Castle day 090. Dark Forest minifigures Since this is such a small theme and the Dark Forest minifigure torsos don't show up much outside of this LEGO Castle subtheme, I decided to just show all the minifigures used in the three Dark Forest sets (6024 Bandit Ambush, 6046 Hemlock Stronghold, and 6079 Dark Forest Fortress). -The skeleton shows up in two of the three Dark Forest sets, with a white minifigure head with black circular eyes, a black triangle nose, and a black tooth smile, a white skeleton body with thin shoulder pins, thin skeleton arms, and individual bone legs. This continues to be my favorite minifigure skeleton :) -The second minifigure has a small blue feather in a brown forest folk cap, a yellow minifigure head with black bangs and mustache, a printed brown torso with a studded leather armor design and a cross-chest belt with a yellow buckle and a brown belt with black notches and a yellow buckle with blue arms, and plain light gray legs. -The next minifigure appears to be modeled after Earl Flynn and has a green forest folk cap with a small red feather, a yellow minifigure head with a black handle bar mustache and spikey beard, a brown torso with yellow arms and printed black cross-chest belt with a yellow buckle and a black belt with three notches and a silver buckle, and plain green legs. -Another forest folk minifigure has a brown hood, a yellow minifigure head with black bangs and mustache and facial scruff, a green forest person torso with printed maroon spikey collar and red arms, a cross-torso black belt, a black belt with yellow buckle, and plain brown legs. This torso also appears in 6087 Witch's Magic Manor. -The next forest folk minifigure has a black hood, yellow minifigure head with brown bangs and longer side bangs, a brown quiver, a green torso with printed yellow v-neck, brown pouch on a black belt with a yellow buckle and green arms, and plain light gray legs. Other than the plain yellow smiley face minifigure head on the Royal Knight crossbow wielder, this is the only non-male capable minifigure in this series. This torso also appears in eight other non-Dark Forest sets. -The first Royal Knight minifigure has a yellow minifigure head with a blocked open stud and black bangs with a black mustache and facial scruff, a red torso with white arms and a yellow lion head with a yellow crown and a black mane on a red and white triangular background with a blue border, and black legs with a red belt. This torso is found in eight sets. -The second Royal Knight minifigure has a plain yellow minifigure head with a blocked open stud, a white torso with blue arms and a yellow lion head with a yellow crown and a black mane on a halved red and white triangular background with a blue border, and red legs with a black belt. This torso is found in three sets. -The first Dragon Master / Knight uses a yellow minifigure head with wavy black eyebrows, mustache, and goatee, a red torso with blue arms, printed silver shoulder covers, and a standing yellow and black halved dragon on a black and red background with black legs and a red belt. This torso is found in eight sets. -The second Dragon Master / Knight has a yellow minifigure head with black forehead tuft and mustache, a red torso with blue arms and a printed yellow dragon head on a red background with a printed black belt with yellow notches and circular hollow yellow belt buckle, and light gray legs with a black belt. This torso is found in eight sets.

20240329: the History of LEGO Castle day 089. The Dark Forest This LEGO Castle subtheme only has three sets. -6024 Bandit Ambush -6046 Hemlock Stronghold -6079 Dark Forest Fortress The Dark Forest castle subtheme is tied with the Wolfpack for the smallest amount of sets within the theme and the minifigure torsos from this subtheme show up less in other themes and sets than the Wolfpack torsos. Even as such a small subtheme, though, this series has a LOT of really fun features, mostly found in the Dark Forest Fortress, the largest of the Dark Forest sets. The subtheme was released in 1996 with most of the sets still available for purchase through 1998. BrickLink, BrickSet, and Rebrickable all have the same set listing and more detailed information is available on Brickipedia.
