fic notes, From Queen to a Pawn, chapter 7 edition

as promised, here's everything you might have missed in "Unwanted Discoveries"!

recently had seen the behind the scenes photo of Deidara and Obito's actors from the official Naruto stage, so I think it would go really well for this particular chapter *wink wink*

- regarding the title of the chapter: it's quite obvious, as Obito gets to learn a bunch of things he really would have lived happily without (including but not limited to a) women don't stay lovey-dovey after a near death experience, no matter how much you pinned after them while they were gone b) Kakashi has a Mangekyo c) he's got a list of fetishes almost as long as his dick as the list of his warcrimes)

- speaking of Kakashi: as I have mentioned in the notes before the chapter, I am not insane, and the title of Naruto chapter 276 is "New Sharingan"

Yes, this is preciesly the moment when we see Kamui being activated for the first time and Deidara becomes one arm short. Now, why the fuck do we never see Kamui before that (as far as I remember) and why is Kakashi referring to it as a "new Sharingan" when almost 400 chapters later we will see that this eye was awakened 16 years before these events with Rin somehow outrunning regular Sharingan's reaction speed time and yeeting herself on a Chidori? The answer is: I have no fucking clue. But on a more serious note, this is Kishimoto writing this, so likely at this point in time (276 was released on the 3rd of October 2005) he had no idea what exactly he was going to do with the whole Kakashi/Rin/Obito circus besides "errr yeah Kakashi promised to protect Rin, he failed, Rin is dead, Obito is mad and now is Tobi in Akatsuki, here's the busted ability for Obito's Mangekyo" and planned out the details only a lot later (Rin's death is shown in chapter 604, released on 22nd of October 2012, a whole 7 wooping years later).

Anyway, obviously, this entire bit of the Kazekage Rescue arc makes no sense if everyone (including Kakashi) is aware that Kakashi's got a Mangekyo. So I am going with the explanation that the pain of the awakening was so severe Kakashi passed out before realizing what the hell even happened with his left eye, and as a result only recently (yes, 16 years later) did he understand that "wait, I've got a Mangekyo" and starts using it. It makes sense in my head, so I am sticking to it.

- and on that note this little missing detail creates a lot of tension for both of my blorbos during the aftermath of this mission😈obviously, Kakashi would keep this "nEW ShARinGan" a secret, because why the fuck would you mention having this absurdely powerful tool in your arsenal (unless, of course, it's someone who is also on the task of guarding Naruto), so what ends up happening is that Deidara goes against Sharingan Kakashi, who, in fact, has an even more powerful form of this dojutsu. Deidara obviously knows what Mangekyo is - girlie's been training to beat Itachi's ass for the last 7 years, so of course she'd be trying to dig up some info on the Sharingan and its abilities.

We actually see Deidara and Sasori in canon asking for the info from other Akatsuki members (Zetsu informs everyone of what's going on outside + Itachi with his legendary "he'll be the first one to scream at you *dips out of the zoom call*" and Deidara and Sasori going "????"), so imagine being Deidara, assuming that you know all of the relevant information on the guys running after you, only for the Sharingan guy to pull out a fucking Mangekyo and start sucking you up into a literal black hole. Like, she already hates Sharingan with her guts, but what in the actual fuck is that? I think for the day? she'd spent wandering around looking for her arm she'd be absolutely fucking pissed at everyone who failed to mention such teeny tiny detail before the Konoha gang got to them, which is why she lashes out at Zetsu in this manner, because she's just done with everything Sharingan-related

- really, in any situation Deidara would likely have been the most angry at discovering Kakashi's Mangekyo. That is if anyone but Obito came to look for her. Which is whole another level of fucking comedy. In canon Obito abandons his left eye (for some reason), and with Kakashi keeping Mangekyo secret as his super uber powerful tool, Obito by that point in time has NO IDEA that a second Mangekyo has been activated. So imagine his reaction to learning that little fact after that entire mission. Like, seething is nothing compared to what Obito would be doing. And his reaction would be twice as funny with Obidei in mind, because now not only did Kakashi accept Obito's Sharingan and finish developing Chidori (remember, he couldn't use it before Obito "died", the jutsu was too fast for his eyes) before fucking killing Rin, Obito's first crush, with that very same jutsu, he now also got Obito's other Mangekyo and the very first thing he does with it (as far as Obito's aware) and runs with it at Deidara, Obito's second crush, and almost kills her with it too. Like, fate actually fucking exists.

- the world isn't really hell to Obito, it's just that the fate is a fucking bitch and Kakashi repeatedly stumbles into scenarios that would make Obito most upset

- in alternative universe Obito sits inside Kamui, chilling, when a fucking human elbow pops up out of nowhere. in a place where only Obito can control what goes in and out. he'd drive himself crazy from freaking out too much

- "The shade of her teeth is also closer to pink, and judging by the hole in the lower row, someone knocked her hard in the jaw earlier" - this is referring to this particular moment of that arc

I believe anime even shows something like a tooth flying off, so I'd say that it's fair to assume that post-Kazekage Rescue arc Deidara needs some dental work

- "Like absolutely nothing has changed between her and Tobi" - so some minor spoilers regarding the plans for FQTP, it'll actually be a while before the two of them will be able to discuss what had happened in that alley, Deidara will continue acting standoffish in Tobi's presence. Obito correctly guesses some of the reasons (other members of Akatsuki being present), but... some of the darker things from Deidara's past are raising their ugly heads, leading her to acting this way. And Obito isn't really aware of these things. Not that he particularly cares for Deidara's past at the moment, he's too busy with Deidara's present

- on that note it was imperative for me to bully this man. Like. He has to be so pathetic. He is a giant wet clingy dog. And then Deidara acts not in the way he imagined (and god did he imagine things about her while she was gone), he is just🥺🥺🥺🥺w-w-why are u so mean to me🥺🥺🥺🥺im good boy🥺🥺🥺🥺i've been waiting for you🥺🥺🥺🥺i've been really upset🥺🥺🥺🥺why would you scream at me🥺🥺🥺🥺i don't deserve being treated like that😭😭😭😭

- meanwhile outside of Obito's delulu world: Deidara is still without arms, low on chakra after the unsealing, lost a shit ton of blood, got jumpscared by a sudden Mangekyo of her least favorite dojutsu, had to fight Naruto, Gain and his team alone and without ninjutsu. Oh, and Tobi is prancing around with her severed arm like it's a chewtoy

- Obito's intelligence is a horseshoe and it keeps bouncing between its upper ends

- Was that... was that nothing to her? Is she used to doing something like that? Pleasuring men in this way? No, no, there must be something else, it can't be, I refuse to believe this - Obito's character arc of coping and seething at Deidara's likely lack of virginity continues

- again, the dude is perma stuck in his childhood perception of relationships between men and women. and it's all rainbows and unicorns and everyone remaining "pure" until marriage and blushing when they hold their hands

- yes, I made a point not to mention the fact the Obito's still clutching at Deidara's arm as he waves his arms around

- "but they hadn't managed to figure out that I replaced myself with a clone at the last moment. Must have exploded in their fucking faces," the girl sniggers" - it never really made sense to me that Deidara digs himself out and knows what had taken place after he left his clone. Again, the returning memory is a feature of Shadow Clones (as far as I remember), and Deidara is using his own Clay Clones. Even if the Clay Clones can somehow give Deidara the details regarding the events they see, that one would explode and vanish before Kakashi finished sucking it all in into Kamui (insert joke about alternative universe where Obito sitting in Kamui gets blasted with a fucking full scale explosion), so he shouldn't know it all from that either. And Deidara shouldn't have stayed behind after replacing himself with a clone, he'd be speeding underground away from Konoha gang, so no way for him to see it either. Anyway, I guess this is kind my way of fixing a case of author's omnipotence

- oh yeah and Deidara did train with a Clay Clone back in LTFG. I actually included all of the models she would be shown to use in the following arc

- "Konoha's got some freaky dojutsu, I'll give those shits that, but no, none of them noticed the change, hm." - so, to put into perspective how little screen time Deidara's chase actually has, the entire "activate Mangekyo - lose arm - get shit beaten by Naruto - Naruto loses it - team Gai runs into Deidara - Deidara does the funny and explodes" happens in a span of just 2 chapters (and we don't really see him after he leaves the cave, the entire Sasori vs Chiyo and Sakura never changed focus to any other POV). After checking I know realize that the "So that's what Byakugan looks like" or something like that said by Deidara was actually something that only happened in the anime, because manga shows Deidara being caught by Gai and others and then we instantly cut to them fighting. Well, whatever, it's not that of a stretch to assume that this is Deidara's first time meeting a Byakugan user

- "Byakugan is super powerful, like super-duper! I've heard that it's supposed to be even stronger than Itachi-san's family jutsu!" a pretty funny load of bullshit, "There's no way that dead-fish-eye guy could have missed your clo–!" - we want Deidei to be praised, so here's a reason for her to be praised by Obito (in his mind, but nonetheless). Deidara had a Byakugan and a Sharingan focused on her at the moment of going kaboom, and yet neither Kakashi nor Neji noticed anything off about clone's chakra patterns? Goddamn baby girl, chill out, how good are your clones.

Also of course couldn't miss the opportunity to dunk on Kishimoto's "oh Byakugan is supposed to be waaay stronger than Sharingan" from OG Naruto. Yeah, I am sure it is, mister "let me slap invincibility and literal alternative dimensions on Sharingan"

- "What the fuck do you think you know about dojutsu, hm?!" - babygirl he's got one🤭🤭🤭🤭

- "Quality of clone aside, did you actually dare to use it in Nine-Tails jinchuriki's vicinity? Were you attempting to sabotage Akatsuki?" - Uchiha "had Yagura under control for years and the kid still somehow wound up dead, with Isobu gone to Pure Lands for a second trip in like a decade" Obito 🫶 Baoshu "let me try to steal Sasori's kill and when that doesn't work out explode a clone like ten meters away from Naruto" Deidara. Black Zetsu has to drink some calming tea every evening just so that he is able to deal with these two's bullshit

- "Oh, find a cactus and go fuck yourself with it, Zetsu, hm!" - a reference to either "Dealing with the Devil" or the fact that Deidara's been stuck in a desert for a few days, whichever you prefer

- "even standing at a significantly lower height than both Zetsu and Tobi, without arms at her side, Deidara still manages to look twice as threatening as either of them" - again, Obito is 182, Zetsu is 177 and Deidara is 166. I don't see a reason to change Girldara's height, even in canon he isn't reaching any ceilings with his hand lmao (on that note I remember someone pointing out the 16 cm difference between Obito and Deidara and calling that long distance relationship. I haven't stopped wheezing since then)

- "after licking some of the blood off her lips and chin (Obito tries not to think about how much this movement reminds him of the events in Amegakure)" - Deidara's reconfigured him to the point that at any point in time at least 30% of Obito's thinking takes place in his dick. It's okay, he'll figure things out. Eventually.

- "your throat will hurt if you continue to scream like that, come on, didn't you say that Akatsuki should always keep their coo–" - and that's a reference to what Deidara says to Tobi in LTFG

- "I swear to gods, if I hear you yapping one more time, I'm killing you. Got it, hm?" - while it's not explicitly mentioned, this is supposed to be the very same three strike counter that Deidara does in the original before trying to strangle Tobi. First strike comes from Tobi running around with her arm, second strike comes from Tobi trying to tell her she's supposed to act cool like an Akatsuki member, third is Tobi's comment about the breath play

- "If Deidara saw it, she would be able to recognize it under Madara's mask. Fucking hell, anyone who saw Madara's Sharingan will realize it has the same pattern as Kakashi's." - on a bit of an unrelated note, but I do remember Kishimoto being really fucking inconsisent with drawing activated Mangekyo when it came to Obito, because of course that would kinda blow the entire twist if the readers would see "Madara"'s pattern

- "It was like a hole in the sky. No, not in the sky, in reality itself," a hole in the reality." - I was debating whether to use the term "black hole" in here because ranged Kamui at this point in time pretty much acts like one, but considering the fact that Naruto world is somewhere between middle ages and early industrial age + certain Uchihas literally tried using the moon as a place to show their Sharingan Powerpoint presentation, I realized that they probably don't have a concept of black holes

- "Somewhere that Obito believed to be secure. To be something that no one can touch and where he can not be harmed. A place belonging to just him, his own space where he had absolute control. A sacred, unsullied by this hell territory." - once again Obito is a control freak and learning that he now has to share access Kamui with someone else... well, he is certainly not having a great time

- "It was doing the same swirly-whirly shit as this pumpkin-head's mask over there does, hm." - yeah, Obito, can you explain to the class what was the genius idea behind replicating the effect of Kamui on Tobi's mask, huh? Or the fact that you alter-ego's name is just your name, but the first syllable is dropped, while the other two change their order?

Obito never got discovered not because he's smart, but because everyone else is too stupid.

- "Deep ugly red gashes cover the thin gentle skin there. In a few spots where the skin did not manage to withstand the pressure some smaller traces of blood trickling down her throat were visible"

I think anime is kinda more obvious with Kakashi aiming for Deidara's neck, but you can kind of see it in the manga too. Can't imagine having this near your neck is a pleasant and harmless experience😊😊😊😊and of course everything to make Obito as shit as possible, because not only did his eye chop off Deidara's arm, but also almost decapitated her

- "only to activate Kamui, his only solace in this hell, a place where nothing could have possibly happened without his knowledge, and stumble upon Deidara's severed head" - during editing I realized that Kakashi would have probably sucked in only Deidara's neck, not the whole head, but whatever, this is Obito spiraling, only the worst for him💋

- Deidara used Pussy Grab! It's super-effective!

- "the entire scenario reminding him of how the girl managed to grab at his scarf, leaving him without a breath and choked after the last Akatsuki meeting" - as far as this AU is concerned, this is not the first time Deidara chokes Obito, the first on-screen one was during their game of tag. And it wasn't as bad at the time, Obito wasn't interested at Deidara, and getting choked vertically is not nice. Now getting choked horizontally and in this position...😋😋😋😋the monkey brain is back

- "but what made all of his organs instantly shrink in panic was his realization that Deidara's kick was enough for his mask to partially slide off his face"

this is actually a reference to the one and only "death by suffocation" panel where Obito's mask is drawn in such a way the the highest of the swirls actually looks like someone's forehead being slightly revealed. absolutely sure that it wasn't the intention, but nonetheless, felt too funny not to include, "Akatsuki leader's identity almost gets revealed by one angry twink femboy"

- "Now that he's kind of gotten used to Deidara choking him with nothing but her thighs, it wasn't as bad as he originally thought it was." - once again, Obito's on his way to discovering that the list of his kinks is as long as the list of his warcrimes. He is not having fun with this discoveries. Well, at least his brain isn't. But he is freaky. Trust him to run up to Deidara, grab her shoulders and scream "Senpai it's imperative that you sit on my face, humanity's salvation literally hinges on it" after something minor goes wrong with Eye of the Moon.

- "In fact, his voice was probably loud enough to alert all Suna (and an additional secret Iwa) squads nearby to the location of a very intense confrontation taking place between the Akatsuki members (two confrontations, in fact, one being between Deidara and Tobi and the other between Akatsuki's real leader and his forcefully awakened uncontrollable libido)" - poor Suna and Iwa ninja. Imagine hearing some commotion and stumbling upon Akatsuki going freaky.

I don't feel bad for Konoha ninja. After all, canonically Kakashi is riding guy literally at the same time as Obito is getting choked by Deidara

Maybe it's something in the air in the Land of Rivers that makes all Konoha-born men aged 30 act like that?

- "There is no wariness or the usual predatory glint in Black Zetsu's eye. Only quiet triumph." - if you believed Black to have some darker ultirior motives in the choking scene, sorry, but no, he really is just giggling at what a loser Obito is.

it was a lot of fun writing the difference between Tobi acting and Obito thinking. Also as the time goes on Obito defaults into his 13 year old self insults - garbage/trash/etc

- "which resulted in him accidentally stepping on his own scarf and choking himself some more, just to drive his level of embarrassment for today higher. Making a pathetic "bleah", Obito falls headfirst into the nearest bush, where his series of misfortunes ends" - Obito MUST be bullied under my watch. This man is not getting to look cool in front of Deidei. If she doesn't fall in love with his loser side, then what is the point.

- "Good, thinks vindicated Obito, rubbing at his sore neck you deserve to feel like shit after making me go... through all of that . He even makes a crooked grin when he hears her wet heavy coughing ripping through her entire body." - throughout this chapter there's tiny sprinkles of what is going to happen in the next chapter, and one of the bits is right here. But back to Obito - he's a petty bitch. And a drama queen. A girl is coughing up blood after getting triggered by his stupid comments and all of her injuries? Not as much suffering as he had to go through after almost popping a boner😡😡😡😡

- "So do you know why the Kazekage boy is now alive?" - I swear to god why was everyone so fucking chill about Gaara surviving that shit? Like, the murder organization with expertize in murder murders a guy and the guy gets somehow unmurdered, and everyone asks no questions???

- "Dead as they fucking come, hm! You'd think I wouldn't notice that when I was sitting on him?!"

Obito's head shoots upwards, straining his ears to better hear the conversation that took quite an unexpected turn. His eyebrows unconsciously furrow into frown, lips thinning as he intently watched the girl argue with Zetsus." - if Deidara mentioned her plan to provoke Naruto by sitting on Gaara's corpse, you bet your ass Obito would be running max speed out of Amegakure and into that hideout. He would personally throw Gaara's body into Naruto's face just so he can be Deidara's sofa.

- "Where am I supposed to go next?" Deidara's voice seems... strange. If Obito was not watching her talk, he would have had trouble recognizing it to be hers. It's completely flat and disinterested" - ta-da! we're kind of starting the arc regarding Deidara's past😈

- "This Deidara has empty gray eyes, completely dull and disinterested, deep dark bags beneath them. It was like looking into a corpse's face." - more stuff kind about her past, but now with a quick detail that Obito calls Sasori a laughing corpse and Deidara a silent girl, however now she also remind him of a corpse

And that's it for this chapter! Originally supposed to be one with the following one, but alas the following events are pretty important, so not to end up with a behemoth of a chapter I decided to release this one as is. I should be starting work on the next one pretty soon, so see you there

Alright, I need to talk to the fandom.

I have been seeing people claiming F!Alear is the canon one because she got a legendary and other upset that she beats M!Alear to this because they fear it means she is canon, so I feel the need to say it and I will repeat it again and again and again and again and again and again and again until people finally learn.

Neither gender of the Avatar is canon. That's the whole point, choosing you avatar. Why do you think IS still market the Robin and Corrin as "default" rather then canon ? To not invalidate the customization.

M!Robin isn't the canon one, he is simply used much more because he is more popular. IS cannot throw away F!Robin's existence because 1)it means invalidating one of the Morgan's existence 2)it means invalidating one of the several Chrom ships 3) IS doesn't like to confirm anything canon these day. The reason why he is featured in Engage was because of gender balance and because IS is careful of Robin's intereaction with Lucina since she calls F!Robin "mother" when she is her mother.

F!Kamui isn't canon either. She is the represent of the Nohr route which is more popular among fans and F!Corrin is also more popular but M!Corrin represent the Hoshidan route and is used for marketing Birthright. Scrapping M!Corrin's existence would mean scrapping Birthright and there is no way IS would do that, and it also means scrapping one gender of Kana.

Now the bits about Byleth because it's the perfect example of how dumb this whole discourse is. F!Byleth is the most popular out of the two and was claimmed to be "canon" and when Hopes released, fans deduced she was canon because she was featured in the trailer. But the only reason why was because they choose M!Shez for the advertissement. So now that M!Byleth was choosen for Engage guess what ? Now people believe he is the canon one when not so long ago people though his female alter ego was the canon one.

And now Alear's turn. F!Alear got a legendary earlier because she was in the game much longer then M!Alear. If you recall, each time an Avatar gets an alt in heroes, said avatar's counterpart gets one too : F!Robin got a summer alt and M!Robin a winter alt; both Corrin appears in the ninja banner and the Halloween banner, both Byleth got a legendary alt. Now, both Alear are featured in FEh and while F!Alear got a legendary first, M!Alear is likely to get an alt soon to balance things up. And while both Alear are very popular, they are both used equally in terms of advertissement. The Engage trailers used more M!Alear for the advertissement, both are featured in the Engage tutorial, both are in Heroes and M!Alear is used in the Engage manga. Both appeared in the freaking opening.

All I am saying is that IS may favor an avatar over an other due to popularity but not because one is canon over another, if that was the case, you couldn't even choose their gender ! IS has no reason to make an avatar canon because 1/ either gender of the Avatar have 0 impact on the story, save for the Robin since F!Robin can be Lucina's mother while M!Robin can marry Lucina, 2/ IS hates making things canon these days, whether it be ships or anything. They can infer stuff some ships (in Engage case, they ship tease Alfred/Alear and Nel/Alear) but they never confirm any ships ever since the end of the Kaga era.

There is no canon gender for the Avatar.

Meet Kyo Raitora: The Shining Summoner

World of origin: World of Pokemon

Supports: Kamui (male Corrin), Lifonse (Alfonse/Lif hybrid), Eclair, Kaze, Cronos

A Galarian-Kalosian trainer who was originally born and grew up in Galar, yet moved abroad and primarily hangs around Kalos instead. When he grew up, Kyo was a black sheep to his golden child younger sister, Kichi, where his birth had been heavily associated with all the turmoils and ill luck of newfound parenthood, while his sister was wanted, expected, and utterly adored with all the experience gained from the 'practice child'. He was so heavily neglected that well before he reached the age he would be allowed to go on a pokemon journey, he snuck out frequently, and ran across an adolescent zacian, and her puppy zamazenta brother, themselves also too young to go on the journey many other fledgeling wolves of their kind would go to follow in the legacies of their ancient ancestor legendaries. He found more protection and care in those wolves than he did with his family, up to the point he was old enough to become a trainer, to which the wolves saw him off as he immediately gained his starter and moved immediately over to Kalos, rather than start proper in Galar, just to evade his family. Through hopping across multiple different regions thereafter, he met Teru, and the two hit it off.

Prior to becoming a summoner, Kyo, as well as Teru, both grew up as pokemon trainers who crossed paths with one another, befriended and started a relationship with one another, and together alongside other friends, started a restaurant business in Lumiose, Papilon, which is still booming in business to this day. Even after becoming a summoner, he still makes frequent trips balancing being a co-owner and manager to Papilon with three other co-owners (one of whom includes Teru) alongside his duties as summoner. However, Kyo and Teru were kidnapped, at first by who they thought were affiliates of Team Rocket, only to find out at the midpoint between Books IV to V that it was a branch of Tylon associated with Orion instead. When Kyo and Teru were kidnapped, Kyo begged and pleaded for Teru's life while willing to sacrifice himself for his sake, but in a cruel twist, it backfired horribly by subjecting Teru to what would've turned him into a hybridized missingno, while he himself became a hybridized ditto, a context that, through their murky memories re-tracing back to this traumatic event, as well as the fallout of Lifonse and Kamui intervening to rescue Kyo directly while Teru was isekaied away through his Breidablik, completely destroyed Kyo's and Teru's relationship, and took time to regain their strong friendship once more, minus their past romance.

While the direct aftermath of his experimentation left him in an unstable and disoriented state, with support and promised protection from both Kamui and Lifonse, the two tried as best as possible to cushion the panic and stress as much as possible of his new condition and sudden spiriting into a new world of Zenith, not knowing until Book III that the two were trying to set right what once went horribly wrong with the grim and horrific context they had of how badly their original Kyo was failed the first time around.

This had a lasting effect on both Teru and Kyo, as due to the two having been ambushed at a pokemon center that they realized too late was hijacked, both have sharp triggers in being unable to cope returning to any pokemon center anymore, and both had tried and failed to circumvent other means to heal their pokemon - or even outright refuse to use them at all - until others like Erin stepped in to server as a courier in their stead once she first proved the combination of her might and Lif's woefully overbearing care for her was more than enough to secure her own safety in the job.

Upon regaining his footing both physically and mentally, Kyo weaponized his power to allow himself the ability to shapeshift into anyone he pleases - including inheriting their powers and physical strengths - albeit with some key limitations. As a precaution in case he were to breach containment, he was hard-coded to become the 'shiny' variant of whatever and whoever he tried to transform into, even of subjects who didn't originally have a 'shiny' variant (such as other heroes, or non-pokemon creatures), a weakness Loki often holds over his head to taunt him with. Furthermore, although his capabilities are endless in theory, in practice, he must also either be within range of the subject he turns into in order to inherit their full capabilities, or must grow familiar to the point of imprinting on a subject to change at will to it, something he only managed to do with a few key forms he regularly borrows, such as Corrin's/Kamui's dragon forms, or certain eeveelution forms to retain their elemental immunities (such as committing Fjorm's flareon to memory to directly render himself immune to Cronos's flames, especially if Cronos was left in a feral state in his phoenix form without his beast stone).

He is also capable of partially shifting into a were-like state (comparable to the Burst warriors in Pokemon), and after 'solidifying' his genes, regulated himself into that of a hybridized shiny mew, rather than a shiny ditto, as a beast association his genes 'default' to when transforming without a subject in mind. In either his weakened state, or simply out of preference, he might partially or fully shift into the form of a mew at times thereafter.

While he was initially haughty, fickle, and some parts of a stinky bastard in being so overly aloof as to leave all the summoner duties nigh exclusively on Erin's lap to deal with in favor of prioritizing his own dealings with his own world instead, a part of his earlier reservations were him barely coping well between what he thought was a violent death of his ex (which ended up actually being the case for the Kyo Lifonse and Kamui originally lost), a lot of scars weighing on Lifonse and Kamui's minds of them pre-emptively reacting based on some of past-Kyo's shittier aspects that the current and present Kyo didn't do and resented being blamed for, and the sudden revelation of Teru suddenly turning up alive again, but burdened with shadows of trauma and failure and a very nasty rift between the two originally that Kyo initially clumsily had problems mending. He soon came to open up from his initially guarded attitude as the other summoners tried to reach out to him in kind, including Sparrow offering assistance in performing more monotonous tasks in combination with her own chores, or more weighted dealings like Erin's aforementioned handling to circumvent their triggers. No matter his attitude, after being so guarded and rattled for so long, he soon learned to trust once again.

With patience, understanding, and as he grew to care more for the summoners, his reluctant rescue and supporting of the forma summoner Eclair, and coming around to find genuine care for his newfound supports and family, however, his attitude gradually shifted more in remaining more of a common sight around Zenith, picking up the burdens of what he previously allowed Erin and Teru to be weighted down under, and eventually became an emotional rock back to his supports, all of his growth of which eventually proved himself just enough to seek out and reconnect with his zacian once more to aid him throughout the challenges in Zenith alongside her brother. Upon gaining her permanent aid, he had Erin's help in dubbing her with the name Ringel, while her brother zamazenta was entrusted to guard Eclair, and later earning his own name in Anguirel. Their bond is often the subject to what leads to a lot of his later alts, up to and including his legendary one, where he will often transform his Breidablik into the likeness of Folkvangr and grant Ringel the ability to assume her Crowned Sword state with it, in lieu of a rusted sword, meanwhile riding on her back in his own mew state to let her take proper charge of the battlefield. It's through her that he slowly regained the ability to trust some of the burdens of the battles across Zenith alongside his pokemon, rather than solely on his own shoulders with his transformation abilities.

Out of the six, Kyo is the summoner with the least amount of changes in this redesign spree, with his clothes taking far more of a dramatic difference compared to all the rest of him being fairly set in his ways otherwise. While originally, he was the summoner with the least amount of tells of being a summoner on purpose - in large part because he disliked the decals of typical summoner garb and gets fussy and stinky when suckered to wear it - eventually, after characterization marched on, and he got closer to his supports proper, he did end up finding his own compromise of keeping to his typical stylish and sleek trends, but splashing the accents more typical to the summoner themes. He was the summoner next to Eclair who I ended up being the most "familiar" and "set" with, so he was great warmup-practice in trying to recall how to work with FEH sprite styles after a long time since doing them last (besides the earlier tiny-beasties ones I mean. Like, human ones...)

Well, first my eye was drawn to the brightest part of the drawing. Promptly in the middle, big, foreshortening technique used on Minato's arm leading you to his face secondly where the colors gradually get darker and more saturated. As are the colors surrounding the NinJutsu to make it stand out more. Every line on this drawing illustrates Kishimoto's experience, talent and hard work regarding his knowledge on composition.

Then..

Sakura is holding the same type of axe-weapon she was also holding in an illustration for Chapter 15.

Naruto has a slightly different one on Volume Cover 33 too. (I'm obsessed tbh- LOOK AT THE KURAMA-TEETH ON THE SCROLL)

As you pointed out Madara and Hashirama are on opposites of the illustration, almost as if they're battling each other! But also look at how Kurama's tails embrace them, how that enhances the movement and expression of their battle-intent + the Rasengan twirls!! 😱 AND the weaponry that both come from behind their heads at the same spot. (Omg I love Kishimoto so much.)

Naruto and Sasuke are paralleled on either side of the illustration too! (And so are Kurama and Shukaku 🤭..)

Speaking of Shukaku, Gaara is holding what looks like the "Tea Kettle" he was sealed in. The former Jinchuuriki 'Bunpuku' and the beast were inspired by a Japanese folktale 'Bunbuku Chagama' where the creature in the tale is a raccoon dog, like Shukaku.

I think that's a really nice addition. (Especially since I saw this legendary creature used as a toy by this mini-Hinata look-a-like gremlin in 'Boruto'.. what's up with that anyway..)

I think Kakashi's weapon is kind of like the Kamui Shuriken he used when they fought Kaguya?

Furthermore:

I'm glad Kakashi and Sakumo are together on this.. also, Obito's goggles have made a comeback ;-;🥹! It's funny to me that Kishimoto started to draw Naruto with goggles (a way to cover himself and hide as he did in Chapter 1)

..but then said in a later interview that it was too much work. (I tried a few panels drawing them and I totally get it...) Anyway I digress-

We can also see Shisui wielding a sword/drill that looks like it was designed with his supposed(?) Susanoo in mind. This was seen in Ninja Storm the game.

NOW I'M NOT SURE ABOUT ITACHI'S SWORD... BUT:

It loooooooooks like a masamune sword, but I'm not sure.

Long-ass Indra's arrow-bow.. in physical form.. legendary!!! So fine 🤌 I also love how Kurama's tail frames him in the background. Orange looks good on you Sasuke.

The way the Rasengan swirl pulls your attention on him (and the characters in general) + the Chakra/energy sparks are all placed so nicely *-*! It really communicates more movement and liveliness into the illustration.

Neji is holding what looks like Chakram/Chalikar weaponry? These are throwing knives used for.. well throwing AND close combat. At least that's what I thought at first but then I was thinking about it more and the Hyuuga's "gentle fist" is based on "Baguazhang". This is a martial art style which uses a lot of rotation style techniques. (Hence.. "eight trigram palm" is real because that's what it literally means.)

There are special Baguazhang Crescent Moon knives/Deer horn knives that look like this:

I think that's what these are, which are perfect for rotation-based combat.

In the same category, Baguazhang in practice used a double-edged sword called 'Jian'. It was known as the "gentleman of weapons" in Chinese Folklore. Early Japanese swords known as 'Ken' or 'Tsurugi' are often based on 'Jian'.

It does seem a bit unusual since most of them don't have a guard like that, but they exist as Changjian, or longsword.

What she has could be a Tsurugi though not sure.

Regardless, it seems pretty heavy for her 😁?

Naruto and Jiraiya both stand very wide, using an open, boisterous body-language that Kishimoto often uses for the both of them in many of his previous art. This over-the-top, theatrical design and visual representation is based on 'Kabuki' which is a traditional form of Japanese theatre, dramatic performance/dance. The umbrella is called a 'wagasa', often used in these plays/ceremonies.

I'm happy these two made it!:

A sword made from the tail of Sasori's puppet, Hiruko? That goes so hard!! It kinda reminds me of Renji's (character from Bleach) sword. I always thought that design was so cool, but this one also has that poison..

Not sure how those clay mask bombs work wrapped around a string, but you gotta admit, they're pretty artful! Perhaps it's like wire binding infused with Chakra.. Or what if, once he has put them on you, your head explodes or something..

Additionally:

I love how Kishimoto just added Guy (and Kurama) because he wanted to but also because having Lee and Guy together on the illustration just seems right.

Shikamaru with Asuma's Chakra blades of course~ (He uses them for his Shadows Imitation Shuriken techniques... but I read he gave them away to Mirai?)

I might be missing many things but..

The more I look at it, the more nods to earlier work I see, tbh I could go on and on. I really appreciate it.

My Journey with Garo

It must've been near the end of 2022 when I discovered the treasure trove that is the Monthly Manga Garo, a legendary alternative manga magazine that ran from 1964 to 2002 that thrived against the backdrop of a politically turbulent post-war Japan. In the English market now, we're fortunate enough to be getting a wide variety of translated works from some of the manga greats who had serialised in Garo. From pillars like Tsuge Yoshiharu and Shirato Sanpei to the heta-uma king Ebisu Yoshikazu, you won't ever be bored with the sheer variety of stories, art styles and subject matter that can be seen throughout Garo's lifetime. Pick up any issue and you'll be surprised as to how many types of stories will grace your eyes.

Now back to my personal experience with Garo. I had seen a Garo issue for the very first time through one of Shawn's videos from Japan Book Hunter, a manga plug that I've used for amazing and rare manga that you won't be able to find anywhere except in Japan's jungle of bookstores. His YouTube channel at the time was uploading extremely interesting manga hauls that touched upon a wide variety of lesser-known genres and niches in Japanese comics. There were alternative manga, Shoujo horror, SF, gag and all the other gritty stuff from the wider world of manga outside the usual Shounen Jump. I watched his channel religiously and still look back on some videos to this day, reflecting on how far I've come in learning about manga and manga history. Huge shoutout to Shawn and his store, check him out!

After moving away from the more well-known Seinen and Shounen titles in search of more to explore, my foray into alternative and underground manga was one of the most enlightening experiences in my reading journey. I'd equate my discovery of Garo to my first reads of Borge's short stories, both mind-blowing experiences that have completely transformed my tastes in fiction forever. Garo and my subsequent dives into other alternative manga have now created an insatiable curiosity into what else could be hidden out there in the largely untranslated world of manga. It seems like going backwards in time is the direction I'm taking, but I haven't even scraped the tip of the iceberg yet with Garo, let alone other niches like Shoujo horror and Kashihon. Slowly I'm completing issue after issue, gradually exposing myself to a legendary group of mangaka and artists that have cemented themselves in a magazine that I feel stands the test of time.

At this moment, I have about 40-ish Garo issues on my shelves, and I've read maybe 15 of those. It's a slow reading process, but it's insanely worth it. Each decade is vastly different from the others, so it's extremely fascinating to see the evolution of the magazine over time. For example, starting off in the 60s you have the legendary Kamui-den by Shirato Sanpei, a ninja tale set in feudal Japan that involves social/political commentary on topics like class conflict and oppression. The series was responsible for the birth of Garo because founder Katsuichi Nagai, who I believe was already experienced in the kashihon market, had wanted to give a platform for Shirato to serialize his work. Many stories in the 60s era of Garo were more politically expressive, coinciding with a lot of the unstable politics at the time in Japan. Other mangaka largely present throughout 60s Garo include Mizuki Shigeru, Tsuge Yoshiharu, Nagashima Shinji, Takita Yuu, Tsurita Kuniko and many more.

Then, you move into the 70s. This is where mangaka and artists like Hayashi Seiichi, Tsuge Tadao, Susumu Katsuma and Abe Shinichi start to become more present in the spotlight and appear more frequently in issues. A more surreal and weirder style of stories begin to appear in this decade, marking a key period for Gekiga in my opinion. Personally, when I think Gekiga, my mind goes to people like Hayashi, Tatsumi, Tsuge and Abe, so it's a time that I feel was a very important one for Garo.

The majority of my Garo reads have been towards the tail end of the 60s, with some reads spread throughout the 70s and 90s. Funnily enough, I don't think I have many issues from the 80s. From what I've read from the later decades of Garo though, I've fallen deeply in love. Going from the Tsuges, Hayashis and Mizukis to a whole new world of more contemporary mangaka like Usamaru Furuya, Kawai Katsuo and Maruo Suehiro opened up an even bigger obsession for the magazine. You have an influx of ero-guro (erotic-grotesque) and heta-uma (bad-good) in the scene that introduced a great deal of new names, a lot of whom had also continued into Ax magazine, the spiritual successor to Garo, after the magazine's end. I can make a whole other post on Ax, but that's for another day.

That about sums up my journey reading Garo from discovery to this current point in time. With 426 issues spanning from the 60s to the early 2000s, I'm not going to run out of issues to read anytime soon. Maybe in a future post, I'll talk more in-depth about specific mangaka and artists that I enjoy. But anyways, thanks for reading my first blog post if you've come this far! Hoping to get out more posts in the future because it really scratches an itch for me when I can express all my thoughts like this in an extended post format.

How Big is 'Too Big?' - FFXIV Write 2024 - Day 10: Stable

“Is there a limit to how big you can make a stable before it’s considered a barn?”

G’raha perked his ears up at Halditar’s question, lowering the kettle he was using to pour hot water over the coffee grounds awaiting in the pot. The roe in question had already been downstairs when he awoke that morning, hunched over several papers on the kitchen table. Most prominently, blueprints.

“I’m not sure…” his hand came to his, as it always did when pondering even the most simple of questions. “That’s not a question I’ve had to consider before. I suppose it depends on if the building is surrounded by walls. Why?”

To answer for Halditar, a series of sharp barks resounded from the sitting room. The sound of claws and paws falling on wood skittered from one room to the next, and eventually into the kitchen. G’raha’s tail puffed on instinct as he had to hop and perch himself on the kitchen counter else his legs were swept out from under him by the racing wolves.

The Reveling Kamuy, named Ichiko, held in her mouth one of the many soft blankets thrown over the back of their sofa. It dragged beneath her as she practically skipped through delight. Dragged upon the blanket was Thistle, yapping with delight as he was taken on this ride. Less enthused were his two pursuers, the Auspicious Kamuy and the Lunar Kamuy, Ryoshi and Yuri respectively. The nipped and barked angrily at the joyous wolf, chasing her around the kitchen a few before she tried to escape upstairs. Halditar rose from her seat, brow furrowed in anger and confusion.

“Hey, hey! Who let you three in?!” she shouted and ran to chase after the quartet, voice muffled as she tried to command them to stay off the furniture. G’raha sighed, both to bid his tail to release the tension suddenly built, and because fondness was quick to warm his heart. To think after all that happened in the first, after the trial in the Final Days, he would get to know such bliss… It was hard not to feel like he didn’t deserve such luck sometimes.

The miqo’te finished the brewing of his coffee, intending to just relax a few hours alone before making his way to Sharlayan and continue with the rebuilding efforts of the Students of Baldesion. It didn’t feel like much progress was being made, but Krile assured him beneath the hood, their efforts would make for a strong foundation. It was humorous, almost. To feel so out of depth helping the organization that had been the only home he knew, after managing some of the last remnants life in another shard. Oh, how so many people would get on him over these thoughts.

Though, those thoughts paused as he stepped into the living area. Taking a few moments to process the massive wolf that sat in front of him, staring with an expression unreadable. “Hello there…” It came out on instinct and shock. The Legendary Kamuy, Jona, just continued to stare. G’raha started to feel the hairs on the back of his neck rise, and the taste of metal in his mouth. With no other option, he sidestepped the staring auspice… And found a much bigger surprise in the living room.

“Ah! It was you!” Halditar announced her presence with an accusation.

Probably a very accurate one as the Kamuy of Nine Tails huffed and turned her head away, her thick fur practically enveloping the couch she was curled around. The remaining Kamuy were also scattered in the living room in different ways, most notably the Euphonious Kamuy Hayami was making herself very comfortable in the fireplace, rolling on her back and smearing soot and charcoal everywhere. The redhead set down the Ichiko, who instantly began to dance and try to play with Jona. The tamer of all these divine beasts marched up to the most divine of them all and crouched, face stern with anger.

“Just because you can take a form that gives you hands doesn’t mean you're allowed to use them to go wherever you and your little posse want to!” It was a sight to see the Warrior of Light scold what was basically a god for breaking and entering. Even more so to see said god just whine in denial and flop her head down like, ears pinned back flat to appear pathetic. Something Halditar simply wasn’t having.

“Oh, don’t give me that shite, I know you have a domain and a nice little castle to retreat to whenever you want! Go there if you want to be inside on human furniture until your space in the stable is done, I’m not stopping you! Now get! Shoo, all of you!”

In defiance the Kamuy of Nine Tails did not use any of her mythical powers. She used the tool provided to her by nature. Opening her mouth and releasing an iconic, loud fox-like scream G’raha swore he could hear the ‘no!’ within. The scream resonated so deeply with the other Kamuy they all reared their heads back and howled in turn, creating a chorus of the divine. Though some might be moved by such melodious prowess, their owner just huffed and collapsed on the couch, accepting that this was a losing battle for the time being.

“Fuckin’ pricks…” G’raha bit back a laugh as he observed Halditar’s pouting profile, even as she reached back and tangled her fingers within the fur of the auspice that started this. He settled next to her, careful of his coffee as the Lunar Kamuy Mochi came sniffing curiously, a hand placed over top to protect his vaunted drink.

“Perhaps it might be wise to hire a few extra hands to speed up the addition to the stable… barn.” He suggested with a slight correction. Halditar nodded, sighing as her fingers tapped at seemingly random. A habit he knew was from she was going mental math.

“Aye, I’ll make a trip to Gridanian’s carpenter guild,” her expression softened, and she looked to him, blue eyes so warm behind her glasses. “Would you like to come with me? We can make a little trip of it, try that new bakery I mentioned popped up and visit a few places.”

G’raha’s tail began to flick in excitement, ears perking up, before falling back into place. His excited smile twisted into something more apologetic. He really wished to say yes, even admitting as much, “But I won’t be home until much later. I wouldn't want your plans to be held up on my account.”

Before anymore excuses could fall from his lips, two large, familiar hands held on to the side of his face and forced him to look her right in the eyes. Her smile radiant, hair like a fiery halo, surrounding her in a glow like the way saints were painted in Ishgard. “Silly boy, I wouldn't have suggested it if I wasn’t fine with waiting! You’d never hold me up. So won’t you come?”

G’raha knew Halditar could feel how warm his face got. He certainly did, burning and likely pinker than he would ever want to be seen. But with such kind assurances she didn’t mind, he beamed and nodded that she would come. Small though the trip would be, time spent with his hero was always an adventure he could cherish.

Been hyperfixating on Golden Kamuy and Pokemon for a bit (Just finished playing Legends Arceus) and I decided to feed both of my fixations I would make an AU out of it. I don’t have all the teams set up, and I don’t plan for anyone to be legendary trainers, mainly just allied in common personality/understanding that they would protect the person when in dire need.

Examples of that would be:

Zacian protecting Sugimoto and fighting beside him in the army

Zamazenta protecting Asirpa from danger

Yveltal and Ogata commonly agreeing “FUCK PEOPLE-“ and just want to break shit.

I already did a drawing of Yveltal and Ogata, working on a chibi kinda charm style of them now and may do a shitpost comic of how they met later.
