We need to talk about this scene. Yes, I was taken aback by the ABSOLUTE WHIPLASH of flipping from Vaxleth angst to Scanlan pain to Perc’ahlia, -ahem, being together. What a bold choice and I think it’s bloody brilliant. Here’s why.
Not only was this scene a great way to showcase the Vox Machina romantic relationship drama all at once but it also foreshadows how we find each relationship at in the current canon.
First, we have our tragic, doomed-by-the-narrative couple: Vax and Keyleth (these two always break my heart). Each sitting on the other side of the door, alone, yearning for each other - so close but so far- the tragedy of Vaxleth is that Vax will never have enough time and Keyleth will have all the time in the world. Vax, blanketed by the sun doing down, nighttime creeping in. And Keyleth in her dark bedchamber: dark, cold, and alone.
Second, we have our short but sweet Pike and Scanlan. The future divorcees. From what we I know in the current timeline (admittedly I am behind in C3), after divorcing Pike, Scanlan is out traveling Exandria with his daughter. Pike is still connected with her found family of Vox Machina (again, as far as I am aware) while Scanlan has been more transient- him being the one to walk away after their miscommunication and missed connection. The sunset, beautiful and short lived.
Finally, we have my beloved Percy and Vex. We see them together (horny little devils those two I love them), in a moment of (to put it in a less sexually explicit way) connection and passion. They’re the only ones still together: ruling Whitestone with their horde of children (they’re just practicing that bit for now- haha). Perc’ahlia is the lucky couple of these three- defying their seemingly hopeless future together, becoming stronger through each other and helping each other grow and be loved. The warm glow of the light behind them.
Anyway, I can’t stop thinking about this. Well done, just well fucking done.

It occurred to me that while they were moaning into their microphones they also had to imagine what their characters would sound like when they cum and honestly I wouldn't wish that on any DnD player.

I don't know how it unfolds in the live play but I keep thinking how wild it was that vex thought she and percy were being so clever hiding their relationship from the rest of the party when THEY ALL KNEW.
love that she used them as a thinly veiled excuse like, "oh noo but what will they think, they'll be distracted, and my brother will be so mad, oh noo" like. miss girl, allura knows. cassandra knows. the party knows. YOUR VERY BROTHER HAD THE 'YOU BETTER TAKE CARE OF HER' TALK WITH YOUR MANS, BUTT NAKED. THEY ALL HEARD YOU GOING AT IT IN SCANLAN'S CHATEAU. IN WHITESTONE. IN LITERALLY ANYTHING THAT LENDS ITSELF AS A SURFACE. PLEASE. I BEG.

This is such a cool image, Zerxus divided by the Mace of the Black Crown, a weapon signifying his pact with the Lord of Torment (side note he’s totally an Oathbreaker Paladin now, right? I mean he gave up on Redemption plus he’s in service to the Lord of the Hells, he’s Paladin/Warlock Level 20 at least, probably higher given his status as a Devil now). It’s just so cool, plus it’s an introduction to the Arms of the Betrayers which is something that desperately needs more narrative exploration.
It did get me thinking though…the Mace of the Black Crown is certainly powerful (it’s basically equivalent to a Vestige) maces aren’t really go to weapons for Paladins, especially Zerxus who was a sword user as The First Knight of Avalir. But you know what class defaults as mace wielders? Clerics. Pike is no exception as she typically uses a mace as her primary weapon of choice. So, if Pike had lost and entered Zerxus's service I think he'd have given her the Mace of the Black Crown to use as his servant/champion.
And now I need artwork of an Evil Pike in Zerxus' service with the Mace of the Black Crown in her possession.

I'm as excited about Zerxus showing up in LoVM as everyone else is, but I really hope that his inevitable mention of the Ring of Brass isn't the only Calamity adaptation we ever get.

Glintshore is going to mean something different in The Legend of Vox Machina than it did in the original campaign
At this point in campaign 1, Vex and Percy has not yet hooked up and had been dancing around their feelings for each other. Laura and Taliesin have both said that Vex and Percy would never have admitted their feelings for each other hadn’t Percy died and Vex made her plea to him (true love’s Nat 20).
In fact, Taliesin has said that he was ready to let Percy die permanently and move on with his backup character (fun fact: it was actually Mollymauk from Campaign 2 that was his backup C1 character) but Laura’s choice and the Nat 20 roll was too much to simply ignore (and thank god for that because Perc’ahlia is my prized ship and my Roman Empire).
The timeline of things being very different in TLOVM means that we’ve gotten a sort of sped up development of not only the relationship between Percy and Vex but the relationship Percy has with himself. As we’ve been seeing in the show, Percy seems much lighter, much less burdened by the weight of Orthax and revenge. In episode 6, we see him have a touching moment of with Vex about the future, talking about his hopes for Whitestone.
Tumblr media
In the campaign, he was still carrying around this weight of guilt and shame in a way that wasn’t dealt with like it was in the show (with his self sacrifice in Ank’Harel, taking responsibility for inventing guns- bringing widespread consequences across all of Exandria). This never happened in the live stream. Glintshore ended up acting like this penance: Percy dying at the hands of the very weapon he created.
Since we’ve seen a more “carefree” happier Percy in the show, and he’s already had his moment of self flagellation, Glintshore is going to mean something else in the show.
Of course, we all know this is going to be a wake up call for Vex to finally admit her love for him and stop pretending she can just fool around with him -heart be damned. I think it’s going to mean a lot for Vax and Keyleth too.
Since they’ve set up plot line that Vax is the one concerned about Keyleth’s long life span, I feel like Percy’s death is going to wake Keyleth up tot he fact that everyone she knows and loves will die before her, and she’ll see a little bit more where Vax is coming from- and I think Vax is going to start to realize that Keyleth can handle herself around loss and that he’s being an absolute fool by pushing her away.
Like Marisha’s said in interviews, these upcoming episodes are going to deal with facing fears- and I think Percy’s death and finding a way to resurrect him is going to touch on a lot more of Vox Machina’s fears than just Percy and Vex. I can’t wait to see how it plays out.
