꩜ [ 600 words ]
boyfriend myung-gi who cherishes the small moments with you. the moments after games, moments right before lights out, and even the minuscule moments like when he makes direct eye contact with you from across the room.
boyfriend myung-gi who lets you get in line before him because you’re his top priority, always.
boyfriend myung-gi who always gives you a share of his food. he doesn’t care about you saying you “don’t want it”, he insists that you stay more fed than him. he’ll put your well-being before his every time.
boyfriend myung-gi who is wary of all the other contestants, even more with you in the games with him. he doesn’t trust them, nor does he want you to blindly trust them.
boyfriend myung-gi who makes a silent vow to himself to protect you at the start of every game. he puts your welfare before his every time, so he will defend you with his entire life.
boyfriend myung-gi who always has a vice grip on your hand. whether you’re in a game, waiting to vote, or doing something so mundane such as sitting next to one another. he likes to feel you at all times, it anchors him in a way
boyfriend myung-gi who squeezes your hand just a bit tighter when thanos or nam-gyu walks by. they’re the last people he wants to get near either of you, so of course he feels a need to protect you.
boyfriend myung-gi who always moves your head to rest on his shoulder when sitting next to one another. or he places his head to rest on your lap. he just wants to be near you, is all.
boyfriend myung-gi who always wakes up before you. you sleep in his bed, and he can’t help himself but wake up a few hours before you. he enjoys the mere moments when he can have you in his arms without any concerns.
boyfriend myung-gi who’s the first to acknowledge you when you walk into a room. his eyes immediately shift to you when he’s in the same vicinity as you. it was like a magnetic force pulled his eyes to you every time.
boyfriend myung-gi who covers your eyes when other participants die. if possible, he’s going to shield you from the horror that is the reality of the death game you’re in. the last thing he wants you to see is lifeless bodies dropping left and right.
boyfriend myung-gi who randomly says “i love you”. he wants to remind you of his unwavering love all the time, of course.
boyfriend myung-gi who’s only level-minded around you. you’re the only one who can ground him because god knows how unbalanced he’d get without you.
boyfriend myung-gi who’s constantly near you during every game. red light, green light? you’re behind him. six-legged pentathlon? you’re obviously on the same team as him. mingle? you’re in every single group with him. other participants may see it as clinginess, but both of you see it as myung-gi protecting you with his everything.
boyfriend myung-gi who would quite literally fall to his knees if you got injured. he wouldn’t be able to forgive himself if you got wounded under his observation.
boyfriend myung-gi who has the most extravagant plans for when the both of you get out of the games. he has dozens of date plans just for when you make it out.
boyfriend myung-gi who sometimes feels like he doesn’t deserve you. you’re the only constant in the cruelty that you both found yourselves in. and he feels so undeserving of you and your tenderness so often.

Joining the squid games could possibly be the last thing any person with common sense and a reason to live would consider doing. Unless they either had none.
That's what it looked like for you. The games you had to do to win 45.6 billion won had you either questioning if it's still worth it to still keep going or just to end it all on this island.
Out of all the people in these games, there's one face that you despised seeing and wondered how he's still alive after what he did, Myung-Gi.
He's your ex boyfriend. Being with him was great at first, but once he was invested in the crypto coin thing business, it felt like you're being cheated on. It also didn't help that he had an affair behind your back with a girl named Kim Jun-hee who turned up pregnant.
You didn't hate Kim Jun-hee, as you felt bad for her that your ex abandoned her and their baby, but the whole thing hurted you.
There's nothing more you wanted to get out of here with enough money to move to another place and start off fresh.
When you first woke up in the dormitory with all the other players, you wondered where this possibly could go. You looked around to see so many unfamiliar faces.
Then a man in a pinkish red suit all the way across the room wuth a black covered mas with a white triangle comes out from double doors and starts explaining why majority are here. Because of their debts.
They showed different videos of people playing Ddakji and getting slapped in the face. There was one face you recognized, your ex. It wouldn't be surprising that he was in debt for trying to chase after the crypt coin thing.
It looks like you're not the only one who hated him, many people who fell for the crypto coin were also mad at him. A purple-haired guy stood out from the rest, as he was a rapper you heard from others who were apparently fans. You had no interest in him or your ex but were wondering what the whole ordeal of winning money is.
You had to sign a waiver for the games, and you were soon directed to take pictures. It was rough enough. Then you would have to climb stairs that seemed like you were going to Mount Everest. You saw your ex from the right side across. You also didn't want to risk being seen.
Finally, you reached the first game after what seemed like an eternity. There was a huge robot doll and the whole layout was supposed to imitate a school playground with its blue sky and sand ground.
"Hey there pretty" You turn around and see the purple haired guy who was talking to your ex
"Who are you?" You exclaimed looking him up and down not in the mood to be hit on.
"I'm Choi Seung-hyun, Thanos for my music. You might of heard my raps before?"
"If I did, I probably would want to be deaf right now. Including not hearing this conversation."
He pretended to be hurt and put a hand over his heart.
"Ouch girl. Cold aren't you?"
You rolled your eyes. He sees another girl walks by and also tries talking to her. Poor girl, you thought.
"Y/N?" You hear your name being called and look around.
"Y/N!" A hand fell on your shoulder and you flinched turning around.
It was Myung-Gi. Your panic turned into annoyance as you rolled your eyes again.
"What are you doing here?" He asks
"Should be asking you that too, but I think it's obvious."
"Can we please talk?"
"What's there to talk about Myung-Gi? You chose a cyrpt coin over me and cheated on me, and got another girl pregant"
"And I regret it very much. Please come back."
"Share those regrets with the others in here too, including the mother of your child."
He tried to reply back but you walked away from him, ignoring him.
Speakers came on, explaining the rules of the game.
A screaming man came into the front and said it's not what we think the game is. He exclaims that if you move, you'll die.
People around you scoffed and found the man crazy. It seemed like to you he was crazy too, but what if he was right?
He was still screaming telling people not to move a muscle when the game starts.
The robot started turning around and putting her hand up to the tree to not look at the other player.
It started singing.
"Everyone freeze!" The man in front says.
Nobody moved a muscle. Your eyes looked around and saw no one moving. What if the guys telling the truth?
The doll looked away and you started moving forward quickly along with everyone else.
"Everyone freeze!" Yelled again the older man.
There was a scream coming from a girl who moved. She laughed exclaiming she just moved. A bullet came through her head and she dropped dead.
The guy really wasn't lying then. One wrong move, you're dead. More people started moving and more gunshots were coming.
Bodies were dropping. People are screaming. This was a bad idea to be here. You were also pretty sure you were going to die with your ex boyfriend. That another cherry on top to add.
"If you don't make it to the finishing line on time, you'll also die." The man yells but has his mouth covered like he was going to take a sneeze.
It felt impossible to win this game. You were so sure you were going to win money but now the only thing you could be winning is death. You wanted to see if Myung-Gi was still alive.
But you couldn't risk being shot. Everyone sooned formed into a single file line. The man explained that the doll can't see what's behind a person if there's a bigger person in front.
More gunshots came. More bodies dropping. You couldn't stop now though. You're close to the finish line, you can feel it.
You soon reached the finish line relieved that you made it alive. You looked around for Myung-Gi to see if he's alive.
Why do you care so much about him? You thought to yourself.
It's just basic human sympathy you thought. Hating him is one thing, but him dying is another.
The game ended and you witnessed the man who warned about the game, you see his number was 456 and another, a woman helping a man who got shot in the leg reach the finish line get shot in the head.
This isn't just a game. This life or death. Everyone including you who passed were allowed to go back to the dorms.
Zoned out walking, seeing bodies and blood, you hear your name being called.
"Y/N!"
Turning around to see who called your name, you see Myung-Gi run up to you.
"Hey, are you okay?"
A light smile came from your face.
"Yes I'm alright and you?"
"Alive thank God." He chuckled.
You chuckled lightly but didn't know what to say after. Usually, you would have something smart to say to him but after what happened, you wanted nothing more to be out of here.
There were yelling and shouts to how the man knew they would shoot if you lost the game. They were accusing the man of being behind the game.
A pink guard then came out and congratulated us for completing the first game. It then if a majority voted to O, you could leave the game.
Everyone chose their own sides O and X. You chose X, even though you desperately wanted the money to be able to move to another city. You see Jun-Hee, his other ex, chose X too. Myung-Gi chose O, which you weren't surprised.
Unfortunately there were more O's than X's which meant you had to stay. You were heartbroken but also upset and turned to Myung-Gi. Now you wish he died in the first game.
You went up to him and turned him around aggressively and slapped him across the face. People looked at you guys, but you didn't care.
"You're really that selfish, you had to choose O?"
"Y/N-"
"The mother of your child is in this game and you choose O. I should have known from the start dating you was a bad idea. If these games don't kill you, I will."
You stormed off away from him and went to your bed. Myung-Gi probably thought you were bluffing about you killing him.
Something deep down you wanted to keep that word true.
It looks like you'll have to wait and see the next day.

My 2 cents worth on Kdramas
So, earlier this year (2018) my 12-year-old granddaughter turned me on to Kdramas.
Started out with 'Boys over Flowers' in January and we're still arguing about which one of the guys Jan-Di should have ended up with....Gu Jun-Pyo or Yoon Ji-Hoo. Since I'm a sucker for the whole Soul Mate thing (been married to my own soul mate for over 30 years) and Ji-Hoo became my favorite right from the start, I actually wasn't too happy with the way things turned out in the end.
But that's all beside the point and the only thing that matters is that it only took this one series to get me completely and absolutely "hooked" on Kdramas.
Since Kim Hyun Joong became my first favorite as Ji-Hoo, I started looking up other parts he starred in and came across 'Inspiring Generation'. Wow! What a difference! The character of Shin Jung-Tae is just about as opposite of Ji-Hoo as it can possibly get. But I guess that's what makes a truly great actor, and Kim Hyun Joong was simply amazing playing the part....even though it bothered me to see that handsome face getting beat up way too much.
But then it was also 'Inspiring Generation' where I found what would become my next favorite...Song Jae Rim, in the character of Mo Il-Hwa.
I can't quite pinpoint what it was that endeared me to that part, but of course I had to once again look for other Kdramas, featuring Song Jae Rim. And that's when I came across 'Moon embracing the Sun' with Song Jae Rim as the King's swordsman, Woon.
Absolutely loved Jae Rim in that part and still do, even after having watched the entire series about a dozen times by now. I also liked Song Jae Rim in 'Goodbye Mr. Black', even though his wasn't a main character role, but didn't care much for the part of a hitman/killer Mr. Kim he played in 'Two Weeks' since I really don't like my favs playing "bad guys". Of course, watching 'Two Weeks' made me find another new favorite...Lee Joon Gi
Okay, so I just said I don't like my favs playing "bad guys", but the main character, Jang Tae-San, isn't really a bad "bad guy" and if that story doesn't tear up your heart, then you better check if you still have one.
I actually had to do something I usually NEVER do...about half-way through the series I had to watch the final episode to see how it turns out, just so my old nerves could take watching the rest of the story. Yeah, I know...terrible, isn't it? Don't worry, I got more than an earful about it from my granddaughter, and I promise to never do it again! ;)
But while I thought that it could not possibly get any better than Lee Joon Gi's performance in 'Two Weeks', I quickly found out that I was wrong when I watched 'Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo' next. OH, MY...!!! Not only is Joon Gi with long hair pure eye-candy (to me at least), but he absolutely nailed the part of Prince Wang So.
Ladies, how many of you were ready to strangle Wang So's mother with your bare hands. I definitely was! And what's the big deal about that scar? I guess it's because Princes had to be "perfect", but come on... Scars are just proof that you were stronger than whatever or whoever it was that tried to kill you. And apparently back then the phrase "chicks dig scars" was unheard of. And also apparently I'm not the only one who wasn't happy at all with the way the story ended, considering there are numerous fan videos on YouTube with different, happier endings. I got more than just a little upset with Hae Soo for leaving Wang So. How could she not see that he was trying his best to NOT become some blood-thirsty tyrant??
Anyway, after only about 3 days of some serious editing work, the final episode in my own DVD collection of 'Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo' has a much happier ending now...many thanks to Daria Zyuzina who created the wonderful fan video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oj0r9zE5Le8) where Wang So finds Hae Soo in the future. And like so many other fans, I'm also still hoping for a Season 2 with this kind of scenario.
On another note to 'Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo'... aside from the despicable character of Queen Yoo (Prince Wang So's mother, who treats him like s**t), my other least-favorite character is Prince Wang Yo (Wang So's biological brother, and also a son of Queen Yoo). However, while I hated the character, actor Hong Jong Hyun did an excellent job portraying the mean, spiteful, conniving 3rd Prince. But if you're like me, you would much more enjoy seeing Hong Jong Hyun in the role of Wang Rin in 'The King in Love'
or, even better, as Seo Chan Hwi, the vice-commander of the Royal Guard in 'Jeon Woo Chi'
(that is, if you can get into things like wizards and magic and tolerate some occasionally slightly over-done special effects of people flying through the air and such...BUT at least in 'Jeon Woo Chi' ONLY the wizards have that ability, unlike in some of the Chinese dramas where seemingly anybody can have such super-human abilities...if you ever watched 'General and I', you might understand what I'm talking about... I couldn't make it past a trailer that had a fight scene between Chu Beijie and He Xia, but that's just me, I guess).
As far as wizards and magic are concerned, however, I did very much enjoy the ones in 'Mirror of the Witch' aka 'Secret Healer' and my favorite character there ended up being the Taoist Yo Gwang, played by Lee Yi Kyung.
Don't ask me why, I just found him adorable (maybe because he was so awkward, dealing with the girl Soon Deuk who clearly has a crush on him). SPOILER ALERT -- 'Mirror of the Witch' has a rather bitter-sweet ending!
I want to get back to Lee Joon Gi for a moment since I just finished the 'Lawless Lawyer' series....which is an excellent nail-biter and I had to seriously restrain myself NOT TO watch the final episode first again. If you've seen it, tell me is it just me or did you think too that Joon Gi looked too skinny in that series? Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying at all that he looked "bad" in any way and his performance was awesome as usual...I just felt that he looked like he'd lost a whole bunch of weight and "celebrity life" was taking its toll on him. Kind of worries me, because I would definitely like to see him in many more future performances.
I still have some Lee Joon Gi binge-watching left over for now, since the only other movies and series I made it through so far were 'Iljimae', 'Arang and the Magistrate', 'Gunman in Joseon' and of course 'The King and the Clown' (which was way too sad for my taste). But most likely 'Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo' will always be my absolute favorite and I'll keep hoping for a 2nd season...even though that will probably just remain wishful thinking for myself and many others, but we can always hope, right?
Some of my other favs I’d like to mention would be Kwak Dong Yeon as swordsman Kim Byung-Yeon in 'Moonlight drawn by Clouds' aka 'Love in the Moonlight'
and he also played an excellent part as young Shin Jung-Tae in 'Inspiring Generation'.
Then there is Seo In Guk for his outstanding performances as Prince Gwang-Hae in 'The King's Face'
and also as Lee Hyun / David Lee in 'I Remember You' aka 'Hello Monster'.
An excellent yet unfortunately somewhat overlooked performance of Kim Jae Young as Moo-Yeon in ‘100 Days my Prince’
And last (for now) but certainly not least is Jung Il Woo whose sad role as Prince Yang-Myung in 'Moon embracing the Sun' cost me plenty of tissues,
but required even more of them in 'The Return of Iljimae' (even though it has a happier ending for Jung Il Woo’s character)
I'll probably get "yelled at" for saying this, but I honestly have a hard time deciding whom I liked better...Lee Joon Gi as Iljimae in 'Iljimae: The Phantom Thief', or Jung Il Woo as Iljimae in 'The Return of Iljimae'. (Sorry, Joon Gi, but be assured that you'll still always be my #1 fav).
So, thanks to my granddaughter, back to some more binge-watching...hey, I got to blame someone else for things not getting done around the house, right? ;)

Cryptocurrency Has Potential to Threaten Fiat: South Korea’s Finance Minister
Kim Yong-jin, South Korea’s Deputy Minister of Strategy and Finance, stated at a financial conference held at InterContinental Seoul that the cryptocurrency market is growing exponentially and gaining stability.
Minister Kim surprised local investors and cryptocurrency researchers by stating that alternative means of payment such as cryptocurrencies could threaten the foundation of the traditional fiat system.
“Cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum, which led an investment and speculative bubble earlier this year, have stabilized and are leading both the authorities and investors to question the foundation of the fiat system,” said minister Kim. He added that “the central bank should consider the emergence of alternative payment methods such as cryptocurrencies as a threat to the existence of the traditional fiat system.”
The Cryptocurrency Ecosystem in South Korea
The administration of President Moon Jae-in has garnered the majority support of the people of South Korea thanks to the government’s notable efforts to draft a peace treaty between the North and the South, and the government’s efforts to crack down on corrupt politicians. Former presidents Park Geun-hye and Lee Myung-bak have been arrested and incarcerated for corruption, with former president Park facing up to 25 years in prison.
This January, the Moon administration was struggling with a 20 percent decline in support from the citizens of South Korea. At the time, analysts attributed the drop to the abrupt announcement of a cryptocurrency trading ban by Justice minister Park Sang-gi, who claimed that the government would impose a ban on cryptocurrency trading in the short term during a press conference.
After significant pushback, on the same day, the Blue House, the executive office of President Moon, announced that there would be no ban on cryptocurrency trading in both the short and long term, and that the government would embrace technologies like blockchain to ensure that South Korea stays at the forefront of the fourth industrial revolution.
Since the end of the South Korea cryptocurrency trading ban scandal in January, the South Korean government has focused on imposing practical regulations and policies to protect investors in the cryptocurrency market and facilitate the growth of businesses.
Improving the ICO Ecosystem
Recently, several reports from mainstream media outlets in South Korea revealed that the government is considering lifting its ban on initial coin offerings (ICOs) in the near future, as the country’s largest multi-billion dollar cryptocurrency and technology conglomerates, including Kakao and Bithumb, have threatened to leave the country to establish blockchain ventures elsewhere.
The permanent relocation of Kakao’s and Bithumb’s blockchain businesses to Switzerland, which is the short-term plan for the two companies, could result in losses of billions of dollars for the South Korean cryptocurrency market.
To prevent South Korean companies from leaving the country, the government has started to draft a taxation policy for domestic ICOs to legalize and approve token sales.
“The financial authorities have been talking to the country’s tax agency, justice ministry and other relevant government offices about a plan to allow ICOs in Korea when certain conditions are met. Various scenarios such as the imposition of value-added tax, a capital gains tax, or both on trade; and the collection of corporate tax from local cryptocurrency exchanges, as well as the initiation of authorized exchanges with licenses, are being discussed,” a source within the government told The Korea Times.
The recent statement by the country’s finance minister, coupled with the government’s initiative to remain at the forefront of the global cryptocurrency industry, demonstrate the optimistic outlook the local authorities have towards the market.

Misaeng (미생 – 아직 살아 있지 못한 자; Misaeng – Ajik sala ittji mothan ja) is a 2014 South Korean television series based on the webtoon series of the same title by Yoon Tae-ho. It aired on tvN from October 17 to December 20, 2014 for 20 episodes.
The title translates to Go (Baduk) terminology meaning “an incomplete life” (literally “not yet” (미) “birth” (생), meaning “not yet alive”).
Misaeng became a cultural phenomenon and recorded high viewership ratings for a cable network program in Korea. tvN is known for its record breaking dramas.
For starters, Misaeng isn’t your typical K-Drama. If you’re here for something out of cute ol’ sappy romance or melodrama, you’re on the wrong boat. You might not enjoy and appreciate Misaeng if that is what you’re looking for.
However, if you wish for something to relate to, especially for white-collar job workers, I think this is something you’d want to spend some time on and emotionally invest yourself to. Not that I am saying you should, but I am trying to give you reason to. It’s not your typical dose of K-drama and I’d say it’s more biting and true than most dramas, you’ll find yourself a little frustrated at the different situations portrayed in the drama, but would eventually find yourself as celebratory with the little victories our protagonists experience as the drama gradually progresses and approaches the end.
The Cast:
Im Si-wan as Jang Geu-rae Lee Sung-min as Oh Sang-shik Kang So-ra as Ahn Young-yi Kang Ha-neul as Jang Baek-gi Byun Yo-han as Han Seok-yool Kim Dae-myung as Kim Dong-shik Shin Eun-jung as Sun Ji-young
The Plot:
Since he was a child, the board game baduk has been everything to Jang Geu-rae. But when he fails at achieving his dream of becoming a professional baduk player, Geu-rae must leave his isolated existence and enter the real world armed with nothing but a high school equivalency exam on his resume. Through an acquaintance’s recommendation, he gets hired as an intern at One International, a large trading company.
There, Geu-rae meets his boss, manager Oh Sang-shik, who’s a workaholic and has a warm personality; fellow intern Ahn Young-yi, who attracts her colleagues’ ire because of her impressive educational credentials and by being extremely competent at any task; and Jang Baek-gi, a geeky co-worker whose anxious nature masks his inner ambition. Geu-rae learns to navigate and adapt to corporate culture, with baduk as his guide.
Review:
I wasn’t really attracted to Misaeng at first sight. Reading the plot talk about the main character, Jang Geu Rae (Im SIwan), being an ex-Baduk player and it being his guiding principle as he drown in the ocean of harsh reality isn’t really the kind of description or plot I was expecting, since most of the time I loved the promise of sappy, hilarious romance and not what happens in and out of the office or the co-existence of a co-worker to another or their families. No, it didn’t sound that interesting at first and then I discovered that Im Siwan was acting the main role and that made it a bit more appealing than before.
Basically, Im Siwan is what pushes me to watch the drama.’
It wasn’t his first drama project, but I think Misaeng is what became the main turning point to his career, to which he received the most recognition for playing the role of a common white-collar job worker.
But what makes it different to his previous roles? I think everything. I mean, surely Siwan has already proven himself to be a very resilient actor. He had minor roles in the past, but he stood out on his own. People loved him for his looks, but his talent in acting is just one of a kind. He just gives off this positive vibe–that makes you believe how good his heart is and how honest his character is. I think, in some ways or two, Misaeng revealed another side to Im Siwan; the side which is the worker–the one working hard, but consequently still receives criticism from people–the public–who don’t really know him.
Considering this, his character in this drama is quite different from his most recent drama The King In Love. His character in that drama is quite adorable and laid back at some point, but I also loved the transformation that exhibited his masculinity and prowess in playing the role of a King who assumed his title the harsh way.
Anyway, just saying he has so much in store for you even in Misaeng if you haven’t watched the drama. And I think if you’d been distraught by his role in that drama (or wants to see more of him or just craves something Im Siwan) you will definitely enjoy watching him as Jang Geu Rae to the point you’ll no longer look at him as Im Siwan again, but Jang Geu Rae–the common office worker, who probably half of its viewers could identify themselves to.
The drama tackled more on the more serious aspects of life, especially working in the office. They had the focus on trading–it’s technicalities and what goes in the life of a tradesman–which is a good thing. It drives the story to not stick to one single plot, but instead pull through different scenarios that allows us to see how the characters gradually grow from their old habits.
I don’t know half of what they actually discuss about trading and stuff, but just like medical dramas, which use alien jargons to an outsider like me from a different field, it should be distressing to try and understand what they are talking about, but I consider it a challenge to get something from it at the end of the day, so I do my best to read between the situation and not just watch for the sake of it. Sometimes, these situation–though half the time you don’t understand just like how French or Chinese or Spanish wouldn’t be so appealing to a foreign speaker at first–gradually bring us to the moral of the story and everything just follows and finally makes sense.
In the beginning of the first episode, Jang Geu Rae is in Jordan for another assignment. I didn’t know what to think of it first, as it is a one of a kind prologue that Misaeng introduced me to; I wasn’t sure where it will lead the story to, but eventually it was what made me start to become more curious of the protagonist and what made me love Im Siwan even more.
His character is just pleasantly allegorical even in the first episode, leaning towards his passion for the game of Baduk and its principles. He used it to identify himself with the daily life of a common worker and armed himself of the lessons he gathered from playing it since he was a child.
Though, he started out as a timid, very isolated and introverted kind of person that lacked social skills, and who only had a GED under his name, his own morals has helped him to become what he is. This is clearly seen in the first few minutes of the first episode. We can tell that he has learned and became a remarkable tradesman after all that he has been through, that puts more than effort in his work, to the point he will sacrifice anything to get what he aims to do–even doing impossible stunts, running along the street while chasing a rat, and standing up even after getting hit by a car. All that will be on the first episode.
This side of Jang Geu Rae is very different to the person that he is as the drama flashes back to how he started. He wasn’t nearly as knowledgeable, and far from being an expert at anything except Baduk. The game is the only thing he ever had for the past twenty-six years and is doing things on his own since he didn’t really need friends to do that. He has been kept away for too long from the real world that stepping out of the confines of his room and of Baduk is just overwhelming for him. It made him look like a fool–not even knowing how to use the photocopy machine in the office–and people took him as a fool.
But as time goes by, Jang Geu Rae’s strong will combined with his effort to learn makes him a better candidate from the rest. The heart he puts in everything and the rawness of his approach with life because of his ignorance (about what happens in the trading world) and positivism even in any dire situation became his sharp-edged sword in the battle for survival. It made him very different from his calculative, college graduate colleagues who argued about anything and everything and gave up at any chance they had without even trying, who feared what wasn’t even in front of them. A complete opposite of Jang Geu Rae.
He is like a ray of light, but nonetheless human enough to feel the kind of pains any struggling worker would in an arguably stressful environment.
So, this is where the other characters come in. He meets his immediate boss, Oh Sang Sik, who at any other day I’d beg to be my boss too. He’s hard on the surface, but is compassionate and a family man. He pushes away Jang Geu Rae in the beginning, realizing how much of a failure he is with only a GED and on top of that only has the right connection to earn him a position in the company. A good for nothing. But he will eventually see the positive traits the inexperienced Geu Rae has.
Dong Sik, Mr. Oh’s right hand man, also deserves an applause, considering how cute this colleague is. He first appears like such an ass during his first meeting with Geu Rae, but I think that’s just him being too busy he didn’t have time to properly attend to someone who didn’t really know what he was doing in the office in the first place. Eventually, he warms up to Geu Rae, even siding him at time that Mr. Oh is on his period and is really not in the mood to let Geu Rae off the nagging. What made him more charming, though, is his loyalty to the team, how responsible he is, and how much he cares for Mr. Oh.
Young Yi, may probably just be the best intern from their group, having an outstanding educational background and a wide range of knowledge about languages and how the trading industry works, she’s a gem that would have great stood out if lead by a leader that could have helped her release her own potential. Yet, things doesn’t go smoothly for her just as they all get hired for One International. There are just colleagues that are too sexist they didn’t acknowledge her talent and undermined her.
Suk Yool, at first, may be misinterpreted as the slacker pervert, considering the way he acts to fulfill his job in the site in Ulsan where he was assigned to work for as an intern–he takes lots of women’s pictures and even touches one’s butt just to know the kind of fabric that she’d worn. That’s a little suspicious there, but he deserves the slap he gets from them. Then he meets Geu Rae–the calm in the center of the storm–and eventually a deeper story to him is released.
However, I truthfully don’t like his gossipy character, but what can I do? He’s the on point representation of those colleagues in the office who knows anything and everything about the latest snitch stories or horrors that goes on. And in all honesty, who doesn’t want a little gossip? Everyone would beg to disagree!
Baek Ki, on the other hand, as portrayed by Kang Haneul, doesn’t really deviate from his past roles–smarty-pants with an ambition, but also cute. Don’t allow this guy to smile or else it’ll be on your mind for weeks.
Anyway, to me, Baek Ki, is to whom I’ll probably identify 60% of me with back when I was still a student. He’s smart, though typically quiet to conceal his thoughts and real feelings–he doesn’t go all out, and very critical. He is a perfectionist in all sense and a strategist that plans ahead of him, making him a second best candidate to Young Yi. But sometimes these characteristics is what makes him a very mysterious and dangerous man, because he is too closed off and too firm with his opinions, that he appears a little uncompassionate. Moreso, he’s too perfect he’s always set to be on the safe side and out to fulfill his ambition. I’m sometimes like that so I understand him the best.
That’s also why I feel a little sorry for him when he is put in the Steel Team, which doesn’t really allow him to do anything but run errands. He has so much to learn and so many things ahead of him but it is being wasted away by bad superiors.
There are still many other characters that I want to talk about, but it might take me writing a book to finish and since I am still just at the beginning of the drama, I don’t think it is right to close a chapter without fully knowing everyone, so I’ll leave the introduction of the other characters in my next blog post about Misaeng (Final Impression).
Author Yoon Tae-ho has done a great job in drawing into a book the analogy between life in the modern society and the game of Baduk, a chess-like strategy board game. Baduk has played a very important role in the entirety of the drama and the life of Jang Geu Rae or the typical white-collar worker in this story in snippet amounts all throughout, giving us flashbacks of Geu Rae’s past and what he has mastered and applied in his fight to redeem himself from his slump.
Of course, the drama adaptation didn’t disappoint, considering it has shown vivid descriptions of everyday life and struggles of Korean corporate culture and the little laughs in between as his imperfect characters deal with the fierce competition for survival in a very stressful environment, interpersonal work relationship and politics in the workplace.
It’s realism has actually impacted so many white collar workers that it gained immense popularity among that bracket.
I couldn’t agree more with how well they reacted to Misaeng, since the drama talks about the small people who make up the workplace. Us. It talks about us and how in reality we deal with the many situations we face that often don’t go our way. It’s giving honor to the most hardworking people of society, celebrates their being them, giving them hope that they aren’t just mere workers in the eyes of another but a substantial member that if without can be that great of a loss as well.
Also, It gives us a view of one of the many jobs in the world from the perspective of the writer and look just how thought through, intelligent and well researched the drama is. It has lived up to its name and promise. Didn’t disappoint no matter how gradually slow the progress of the story is. It’s not frustrating but enduring. It’s just the right blend of a slice of life, a little sprinkle of romance and a bucket of cheap laughter. It’s the kind of drama that you soon start embracing and caring for the characters.
Nothing you would want to miss.
A drama you may not want to marathon in one day, but it’s like the kind of book that you take your time in reading under the light of a lamp at night because you want to relish in the beauty of it until the end. And something so great can be taken slowly for days. I think you will appreciate it more that way, just saying.
Rating this drama so far, since Misaeng gives me the feels, I give it 4.7 out of 5.
Also, I’d like to share a beautiful quote from the drama that truly made a lasting impression to me so far. Tell me if those aren’t words of a wise man. The drama has so much wit and heart it is so hard to ignore.

bf!myung-gi who hugs you so intensely after every game that you start to get slightly concerned. he can’t help but want to feel you, to make sure you’re tangible.
bf!myung-gi who votes to leave the games, despite his debt because the possibility of you dying here tugs at his heartstrings. he’ll figure out his financial situation with you by his side.
bf!myung-gi who won’t let you go for the entirety of the mingle game. he wouldn’t forgive himself if he lost you amid the moronic crowd.
bf!myung-gi who seeks you out, once again, after the brawl with thanos and nam-gyu in the bathroom. you’re the first person who he thinks of when needing consolation.
bf!myung-gi who hides with you when the fight breaks out at night, vowing that he’d protect you no matter the circumstances.
bf!myung-gi who stays with you when the revolt takes place, once again, unwilling to leave your side. he’ll eventually get the both of you out of here, no matter what it takes.
