Keeping my body pressed up against the stone brick wall I kept my eyes closed thinking about what my sister had done to me and the father of my child. We had slept in this cell the whole night and it was the middle of the day and we still haven’t been let out.
Kayce was previously sitting on the ground across the room from me but now he was currently pacing back and forth where his boots would screech across the floor every now and then. Covering my ears with my hands I couldn’t stand the squeaking anymore so I snapped my voice up at him. “Can you please stop squeaking your dang boots across the floor. I can’t take it anymore!”
“Oh I'm sorry , am I annoying you?” He halted in his tracks glaring at me for only a minute then going back to pacing the room.
Glaring at the cowboy before me I didn’t remove my hands from over my ears. “Yes you are.”
“Well I’m sorry but I can’t stand being locked up and not having a way out. I - I feel like- urgh never mind you wouldn’t want to know why I don’t like being in here.”
Slowly raising myself to my feet I got up sending him a snarcky reply. “Is it because you can’t stand the fact that I don’t love you anymore huh?”
“It only has a little bit to do with you.” He responded to me.
Crossing my arms over my chest I tilted my head to the side. “Okay so what’s running through your head?”
“I can’t be locked up in a room with the woman that I love. But she wants nothing to do with me!” Kayce turned on his feet raising his voice at me getting up in front of me where our chests were pressing against one another.
Lifting my head I pushed my nose up against his own, feeling my hot breath mixing with the others. “I have wanted you since the night you asked me to be your girlfriend. I have wanted you even after I got pregnant at 16. I have wanted you during all the years of raising our daughter. I’ve never stopped wanting to be with you, Kayce.”
“Then what the hell were you doing sleeping with one of my fathers ranch hands?” He throws his arms out away from his sides.
Covering my face with my hands I screamed into my palms. “How much longer are you going to keep bringing that up? It happened, Kayce. I had sex with someone else. And in case you keep forgetting you slept with Monica while you were dating me.”
“That was a mistake. I ended up with you. I chose you, Alissa. I’ll always choose you until the day I die.” He declares taking two steps forward getting closer to me. “I don’t know how to fix this, Alissa. I don’t know how to not be with you, not talk with you, not be around you or my daughter. You’re my wife. You’re my best friend.”
Raising my voice I shoved him harshly away from me where his black Cowboy hat fell off of his head. “I don’t believe you. You used to be honest with me but I don’t believe a word you say nowadays.”
“I swear on Lee and my mothers grave!” Kayce suddenly shouted causing me to stumble backwards slightly. Raising a hand to my lips I completely froze in front of him. The last time he said those words was when we got married. He has always kept his wedding vows.
The main door of the Lambert house got opened by my father who was standing on the porch all dressed up in a suit and tie. He didn't have a cowboy hat on like he normally does, but this was a special one time occasion. I stroll out the door wearing a white dress that went down to my knees that had light brown cowgirl boots. “You look absolutely beautiful, Alissa Rae.” He beams a smile seeing that i had my hair loose except for some of it pinned up in a crown.
“Thank you, daddy.” I sent him a smile back.
He extended his arm to me, searching my face for any signs of doubt. “Are you ready to do this?”
“Yes, daddy.” I nodded, looping my arm through his before we began walking down the steps and made our way over to the side gate that butted up with the Dutton's fence.
By the time we reached the fence line I saw my mom and sister standing beside Beth. John, Lee and Jamie were standing by their brother Kayce. Yet Kayce was standing on the side of his fence dressed in a black shirt and tie, his nicest blue jeans and dirty brown boots. “You better take good care of my daughter and grandchild, Dutton. You know I'll come after you if you don't.” My father warned the young boy as he placed my hands in Kayce’s.
“You’re not too snug in that dress are you?” My best friend asked me, eyeing me up and down. I had told him that we would have to do a flash wedding since you would start to see that I was pregnant and my clothes would start to not fit right anymore till I have the baby.
Shaking my head, I squeezed his hands in mine. “I'm fine, Kayce. I just want to marry you already.”
“I want to call you my wife here and now.” He grinned looking over to his oldest brother Lee.
Lee removed his cowboy hat holding it in his hands beginning to perform the ceremony. “You two can begin reading your vows now.”
Tucking some of my hair behind my ears doing my best to not start bawling out in tears. “Kayce John Dutton, we've been in each other's life since we were five years old. I can say for certain that your siblings have always felt like my siblings and I can only assume that yours feel the same way about me and my sister Alana. When we started dating I couldn't imagine being with anybody else but you and I am overjoyed to be calling you my husband from this day forward. You are my other half and I hope I am the same to you.”
“Alissa Rae, I used to get so embarrassed when Beth would tease me saying I was in love with you and I am grateful she saw something in you before I did cause now I'm calling you my wife…uhh sorry.” Kayce moved one hand up to rub his eyes making me almost start crying. “You know me better than I probably know myself and you can say the same thing about me when it comes to you. I swear that I'll love you even more than I do right now. You are my whole world now and forever.”
Kayce slipped my wedding ring on my left ring and I slipped his black band on his finger. “I now pronounce you husband and wife. You're officially a Dutton, Alissa.” Lee declared with a cheeky grin plastered on his face. He scooped me up in his arms, suddenly making me squeal.
“Lee!” Lee sat me down directly in front of my husband but now I was standing on the side of the fence that belonged to the Dutton's.
“Now you get to keep his hat forever.” Beth came up behind me placing Kayce's dusty black cowboy hat on my head making me giggle.
Kayce wrapped his arms around my waist tugging me against his chest kissing me long and slow. “It's been yours along with my heart since we were five years old, Lissa Rae.”
“That’s Lissa Rae Dutton to you.” I drew back from the kiss, correcting his words. He chuckled before I cupped the sides of his face in my hands bringing him in for another kiss.
Blinking tears away from my vision I barely got a word out before Kayce crossed the room and closed the space between us. He crashed his lips down hungrily onto mine, where I gripped his shoulders kissing him back ever so slowly. “Kayce, you’re still my best friend-“
He raised his hands up to cradle my face in his palms. He tilted my chin upward and bent his knees some so I wasn’t standing on my tippy toes to kiss him. Flinging my arms around his neck I drew him in for another kiss and he hoisted me up by my thighs wrapping them around his waist never breaking the kiss. “Alissa-“
“Kayc - I’m sorry.” I muttered in between kisses while he pushed my back against the wall and laced one of his hands into my hair.
He broke the kiss needing to catch his breath as he rested his forehead against mine. “Don’t apologize. I shouldn’t - I shouldn’t have spied on you and Ryan. It - that was my mistake. I’m - I’m sorry, Lissa Rae.”
“Kayce, I was hurt. I tried to move on from you because I thought you’d moved on from me. I thought you - I thought you’d chosen Monica.” I sniffed, pushing back some tears.
Kayce moved his thumb up gently, wiping them away. “Hey, hey, you don’t have to explain yourself to me. I love you no matter what happens.”
We quickly turned our heads in the direction of the outside door opening at the same time as a loud unlocking alarm sounded off. Footsteps entered the room where we saw an officer entering the room coming to our cell door. “You two finally made bail.”
“She paid the money.” I sighed in relief.
The officer nodded, unlocking the cell door. “Yes. She did. I’d suggest not doing something like this again. Tell your sister we can’t lock you two up for a relationship issue.”
“We’ll keep that in mind, deputy. Come on, let’s get home before the kids start to worry about their parents.” Kauce draped his arm over my shoulder where we walked out together holding hands, heading out to his truck once we were given our stuff back.

Chapter Eleven
Tumblr media
You took a peppermint out of your pocket and gave it to Storm, "you did great." While she ate it, you pet her moody-coloured neck. Over the past two weeks, you and Kayce had been working with her, getting her used to a saddle and riding. She had done amazingly well and this was the first ride out of the corral.
Kayce tied the two horses to a low-hanging branch so they wouldn't wander off before the two of you walked into your meadow.
"You've been quiet today. Is everything okay?" You asked after sitting on the lush grass next to him.
"Dad talked to me this morning." His hand wrapped around yours, which was resting on his leg. "He wants me to run for livestock agent."
"Livestock agent?"
"You help ranchers with their cattle and horses, could be inspecting and sorting them for sales. Make sure strays aren't getting shipped, one ranch's cattle don't get in with someone else's. People moving from out of state and fencing off land and now the cattle can't get to their summer pasture. Checking on dead animals, on ones that get shot by mistake or on purpose. Catching thieves. Getting ones back that get out of their fence."
You shifted closer so your sides were touching and ran your fingers up and down his arm. "Thinking about Lee?"
He nodded. "And, you and Tate." His gaze went to your horses. "Everything is going good right now. I'm on the ranch every day. I get to see you during the day, I'm here when Tate gets home from school."
"Your relationship with Tate won't change. He will still see you in the morning before you go to work. When you get home he can tell you all about his day at the dinner table and you can spend the evening together."
"And, us?"
You smiled and cuddled into him, "We will be just as happy as we are now. It might even make us miss each other."
"Then maybe I could get you to move in with us." He chuckled and pulled you onto his lap. "Before you came here, I was thinking about moving off the ranch. Getting as far away from this place as I could. There is always someone who wants the land. They want it bad enough to fight for it; the cattle, us. I got enough of that in the Navy. Then you came."
"Do you still want to get away from here?"
"Yes and no. You're here. And, I know Dad loves having Tate here. Dad always wants me to do something: don't join the Navy so I can raise Tate, be the foreman of the ranch. He wants me to be a livestock agent because it could help the ranch. Taking the job would get me off the ranch for a part of the day. I could help other people." His jaw clenched, "if I'm not here if he finds you…"
"There is always someone close by: your dad, Rip, one of the wranglers. They'll stop him before anything can happen. You've assured me of that more times than I can count." You tucked his hair behind his ear, "If this is something you want to do, you should do it. Whatever it is we will be okay."
He nodded and looked out at the trees. "We wouldn't be able to sneak off for our dates during the day."
"No." You left your spot and straddled his lap. "We would just have to make up for it when you are home." Your lips pressed against his before resting your hands against the sides of his neck. "Whatever you decide, I just want you to be happy doing it."
"Have I ever told you that you are an amazing woman?" His hand slid into your hair. "You always say exactly what I need to hear to calm the chaos in my head."
"Well, it's like you've said from the beginning. We're just made for each other."
His crooked smile formed. "That we are. Whether God thought so or not, Lee would have made it happen."
"He definitely would have." You gave him a long kiss before standing up and giving his hand a tug.
"Where do you think you're going?"
"As much as I want to stay here and prove just how right we are for each other…"
He chuckled, "You want to get back on Storm."
"I just never thought she would be well enough to ride."
"Baby, you don't have to explain it to me. I get it. Besides, we have the rest of our lives to prove how good we are together." He pulled you against his side and placed a kiss on your hairline. "Let's go further up the mountain. There's a lookout I want to show you. Dad brought it to me when I turned thirteen though so I might not be able to find it."
"Good thing it's Saturday and Tate and your dad are spending the afternoon fishing."
After climbing on your horses he brought his alongside yours. "Thank you for everything."
"I'm always here." You smiled and you both leaned over for a kiss. "Now where to?"
*****
Kayce's hand tightened around yours as you walked into the bar. He had taken the livestock agent job and he had just finished his last day as the ranch foreman, putting Rip back in charge. The wranglers said it was time for a little going away party for Kayce and a celebration for Rip. Along with you and Kayce, were Beth and Rip and the wranglers.
"There's a spot in the corner that should fit us all." Beth pointed out so you all made your way over.
Over the next two hours, you heard stories of some of the funnier things the wranglers had experienced and about Kayce and Rip. You laughed and joked around. You couldn't remember the last time you had gone out with a group and had this much fun. The only other times had been with Nick and his friends and those usually never ended well.
"I'm going to get a water. Anyone need anything?" You asked who was sitting around the table. The others were currently playing pool. When everyone told you they were good, you placed a kiss on Kayce's cheek before going up to the bar.
"Let me buy you a drink, gorgeous?" A cowboy who had just walked in with his friends asked.
You shook your head. "I don't drink and I-"
"Then let me show you off on the dance floor." He stepped closer, his fingers trailing down your arm.
Your eyes went over his shoulder to your table where Kayce was sitting on the edge of his chair, his hands balled into fists. "I have a boyfriend." You took your glass of water and pushed past the cowboy, making a beeline for your boyfriend. As soon as you sat down on his lap, you pressed your lips against his. His hands instantly relaxed, one went to your waist while the other slid into your hair, intensifying the kiss.
"Get a room. Geez," Ryan teased and threw a peanut at the two of you.
You and Kayce smiled at each other before he looked over at the bar. When the man who flirted with you realized who your boyfriend was, he gave a quick nod and disappeared into the crowd.
Lloyd chuckled and threw a peanut at Ryan, "You do know you just harassed your boss right?"
"I'm not his boss anymore, "Kayce grinned at them before focusing on you. "Hey, you."
"Hi," you smiled before leaning in and brushing your nose against his.
"Mmm," his hands went to your waist and pulled you closer. You giggled softly. "I love that sound." He said quietly.
Warmth filled your chest, "I think we should go."
"Yeah?" He smirked.
"Yeah," you returned the look. He gently pushed you off his lap and grabbed your hand.
"Off so soon?" Ryan grinned.
Kayce grabbed some peanuts out of the bowl on the table and threw them at him with a playful grin. "Watch it or I'll make you clean the stalls."
"I thought you said you weren't my boss anymore," Ryan laughed.
"Come on, beautiful," Kayce's lips brushed against your temple before he guided you out of the bar and to his truck. "Where to?" He asked after pulling you against his side and starting the vehicle.
"Home, a back alley, some back road, I don't care."
He smiled and pulled out of the parking lot.
Fifteen minutes later he parked next to an empty pasture in the middle of nowhere. You looked around.
"Don't worry, baby. We're on Yellowstone."
An embarrassed smile tugged at the corners of your mouth.
"God, you're adorable," His hand came up and rested on your jaw, his thumb running across your bottom lip. "You have no idea how hard it was to not get up and break that guy's hand for touching you."
You got up and straddled him, "I would much rather kiss you here than through prison bars."
"Here is definitely better." He shifted slightly making it easier for you to unbuckle his belt and unzip his jeans. "Fuck, baby." His head fell back as you started pumping his dick.
You pulled your underwear to the side and sunk onto him. You both moaned.
"Have I ever told you how perfect you are?"
"Mhm," your hand slid into his hair as you slowly rode him. "You are just as perfect."
He laughed huskily. "I don't think I've ever been called perfect."
"You are, without a doubt," you kissed him, "Mr livestock agent."
The smirk you loved formed while his hands slid down your back before gripping your hips. "And, we are without a doubt fucking perfect together." It didn't take long until you both fell apart in each other's arms.
*****
You opened your eyes to find an empty side of the bed. The sheet is cold. After getting dressed in a change of clothes that you had kept at Kayce's, leggings, a tank top and an oversized cardigan, you stepped into the hallway.
The bathroom light was on and the door open so you walked over. Kayce was standing in front of the mirror hanging above the sink fighting back tears.
"Kayc?"
He saw you in the reflection but didn't say anything.
"I'm here. You can talk to me. I love you and you know whatever you say stays with me."
Still nothing.
"Baby, why won't you talk to me?" You stood in the doorway for a few more seconds before walking away with tears in your eyes.
The rising sun cast the sky in a kaleidoscope of colour as you leaned against the fence railing, your chin resting on your folded arms. It wasn't long before footsteps approached behind you, followed by your cowboy leaning on the fence beside you. "Did I do something?"
"You didn't do anything, Violet."
"Don't you trust me?"
"I trust you completely."
"Then why won't you talk to me? I told you everything about me. Every horrible detail. Even though I thought you wouldn't want me anymore and would tell me to leave. I told you because what happened in the past is a part of me, just like every day since then. And, everything that happens in the future." You placed your hand on his which was resting on the fence rail. "There is nothing you could have done that will change how I feel about you. I love you, Kayce."
He shook his head as he looked down at your hand on his. "I've done things that you wouldn't like, things that would change how you see me."
"When I told you what happened to me it was like a weight had been lifted off of my shoulders. Part of it was because you finally knew but most of it- I had been keeping everything inside. I never told anyone when he hurt me. I never told anyone about what he made me do. I never told anyone that he made me watch him kill a man and then clean it up. I buried everything. But, it kept eating away at me until I didn't want to live anymore. Lee knew that Nick would get angry and hurt me but that was it. I didn't tell them that he raped me or about what happened in the basement at first. I didn't tell him because I didn't want to burden him any more than he already was." You lifted Kayce's arm so you could slide in between him and the fence. He moved closer, resting his forearm across the fence board behind your upper back. His other hand went to your waist. "After Lee made me tell him, I wasn't the only one who felt better. He said finally knowing why I would get so lost in my head helped him. When my memories took hold he would worry, he wanted to help me but didn't know what to do. When I told him he would still worry but knowing why I was so upset helped him be there for me. Sometimes he would just sit and have coffee with me or he would take me outside and show me what he was working on to take my mind off it. You can't keep everything in, Kayce. It's going to end up killing you." He looked away. "Baby, look at me." You didn't continue until he did. "I promise that there is nothing you could have done that will make me leave you."
He tucked your hair behind your ear, his fingers lingering in the soft strands. "I'll tell you…"
"It doesn't have to be everything all at once." You rested your hands against the sides of his neck, your thumbs running along his jaw. "Just promise you will. I can't lose you to the past."
"I promise, baby." He moved in closer. "It was a nightmare, a memory from the Navy…" he took a deep breath, "we were in Pakistan, not supposed to be there but we were. We blew the door off the house of high profile target. Inside he was holding his wife as a shield and had his daughter on a leash in front of him. He started shooting rounds off with AK 47. He killed two of my men. I had to make a choice. I-I killed him, his wife and his little girl." His head dropped.
"Hey," you said softly as your hands cupped his face and brought it back up so he would look at you, "Kayce, you did what you had to do to save your life and the lives of the rest of your men."
"I killed a woman, a kid." Tears began filling his eyes.
You wrapped your arms around him, and he immediately buried his face in the crook of your neck, his arms crushing you against him. "And, I know that you and the rest of the men you were in charge of are alive today because of it. You wouldn't have done it if there was any other option." You held him until his shoulders stopped shaking and his breathing returned to normal. When he lifted his head you wiped the remaining tears off his cheeks. "You said that he was high profile which means he would have been one of the people giving orders that resulted in people's deaths. Innocent people. You saved more lives than just your men's."
His hands came up and cupped your face, "You really are my angel."
"And, you're mine."
He gave you a long, slow kiss before resting his forehead against yours. "Promise me you'll never leave."
"I promise." You said but deep down you knew that there might be a time when you would have to break that promise.
*****
Tate came bounding out the front door to where you and Kayce were standing. "I'm ready!"
"I've never seen you this excited to go to school." Kayce chuckled.
"Cause you're bringing me." The little boy beamed up at his dad. "I don't remember the last time you brought me."
He placed his hand on his son's shoulder. "It will probably just be for today."
"That's okay. I like it when Violet brings me too."
"Have a good day at school. I'll see you when I pick you up."
Tate gave you a hug. "I will. Dad, we have to go so we're not late."
"I'll be right there." When Tate headed for the truck, Kayce's hands went to your waist and pulled you against him. "Hi."
Your hands slid over his shoulders, "hi."
"I know that I'm going to see you at dinner tonight but I'm going to miss you."
"I'm going to miss you too but I'm sure you're going to be too busy to even think about that." He didn't look convinced. "The day will go by fast and then you'll be back here."
He sighed. "And, then I'll do it all again the next day. Maybe I shouldn't have taken the job."
"Just focus on one day at a time. Today you're going to get to drop Tate off at school before going to your office. You will do whatever you have to at work then come home."
"Home to you and Tate." He held you tighter. "Promise you'll think about it?"
"I will, I promise. Now you need to go or you and Tate will both be late."
His lips pressed against yours. "I love you."
"I love you too." After giving him another kiss you gave him a gentle push towards the porch steps. "Have a good day, baby."
The smile you loved formed on his handsome face, "knowing I got you waiting for me when I get home will always make it a good day."
"Dad, that was really cheesy," Tate said from inside the truck leaving you giggling.
"Just wait until you find a girl you love," Kayce told him through the open driver's window.
"Eww, girls are gross."
Kayce chuckled as he climbed in. Before he drove away he winked at you leaving butterflies fluttering in your stomach.
Good grief, he makes me feel like I'm in high school. You shook your head and started on your list for the day.
*****
You walked into the building where Kayce's office was half an hour before you had to pick Tate up from school. "Hi, I'm here to see Kayce."
"Right through that door, hun." The older receptionist smiled.
"Thank you." You smiled before going to a closed door and gently knocking on it. When you heard Kayce say come in, you went inside.
"Letty," a grin lit up his face when he saw you. "You're wearing the dress you wore on our first date."
"I am and I thought you could use some coffee."
He got up and came around his desk. "Thanks, baby." He took one of the takeout cups filled with coffee from you but set it on his desk so he could wrap his arms around your waist.
You set your cup next to his and placed your hands on his chest. "It's Friday already."
"Yeah, my first week went by fast. Still missing you just as much during the day though. I don't know if I should've taken this job. I don't like being away from you."
"Would it help if I moved in with you?"
He froze, his eyes widening. "You thought about it?"
"I did. You make me happy and you make me feel safe." Your hands came up and rested against the sides of his neck. "And, I love you, Kayce. More than anything in the world."
His lips crashed into yours. When you parted you were both out of breath. After quickly locking the door, he went to push things back from the front of his desk but you stopped him.
"Not here." You took his hand and walked around, pushing his chair out of the way and moving the calendar aside. "Here so every time you're sitting at your desk you will picture us."
"Turn around." When you did he bent you over the top of the desk. He pushed the skirt of your dress up over your ass. "Don't move." You looked over your shoulder to see him pull his chair up and sit down. "Spread your legs." Once you did, he pulled his chair closer, settling between your legs. "There," he said after ripping your panties off, "the perfect view."
"Kayc," you whined.
His husky chuckle filled the room before his tongue went to work on your clit. It wasn't long until you were close. When his finger took over and his tongue slid inside you it pushed you over the edge. "You are fucking perfect, Letty." He praised.
"You're not so bad yourself." You smiled back at him.
"Yeah?" He smirked as he unzipped his jeans.
"Yes," it turned into a soft moan as he thrust into you. "Mmm, yes."
His hands gripped your hips while he leaned over you. "You gotta be quiet, baby, or I'm gonna get fired," he said next to your ear. All you could do was nod as he pulled out and entered you again.
After a couple minutes, he spun you around, picked you up and set you on the desk. With one of your legs over his shoulder and the other around his waist, he thrust inside you. He knew you had to pick up Tate soon so he started pounding into you.
It took everything you had to keep quiet. Kayce could tell so just before you both came his lips captured yours, swallowing your moans.
"I love you, Violet."
"I love you, Kayce." You placed your hand along his stubble-covered jaw. "More than you know."
"Move in tonight? Me and Tate are back in the lodge since Rip has the foreman's house, it shouldn't take long. You'll just be moving your stuff into my room."
A soft smile pulled at your lips. "How about we do it tomorrow? Tate wanted to play board games tonight with us and your dad."
"Stay with me tonight?" When you nodded the smile you loved spread across his face.
"I have to go pick up Tate."
"Have fun with the kid."
You picked up your underwear off the floor but instead of putting them in your purse, you slipped them into your boyfriend's pocket. "Have fun here."
His arms wrapped around you from behind and walked to the door moulded to your back. "Just wait until Tate's asleep."
"Kayce," you scolded when he sucked on the spot your neck and shoulder met, leaving a hickey.
He chuckled while spinning you around, "god, you're cute. I'll see you at dinner."
After a quick goodbye kiss, you headed for the school. Your mind was on what it would be like living in the same room as Kayce.
The overwhelming fear that consumed you when you first got to Yellowstone had been slowly dissipating. It had almost been ten months since you left Nick. You knew that the second he found you he would drag you back to California. He was the best detective in the city, he was smart, he knew how to talk to people and get them to give them the information he wanted. But, here you were, living a life you used to only dream about. When Kayce asked you to move in before he started his job as a livestock agent he assured you that you were safe here. He told you that more times than you could count since you came here but this time you believed it. Not a hundred percent, a small piece of you would always be ready to go even though you had promised you wouldn't. Staying here meant you loved Kayce, Tate and everyone else at Yellowstone. And, loving them meant that there was always a chance you would have to leave to keep them safe. But, you were done with Nick controlling your life. Living at Yellowstone made you happy and being with Kayce made you even happier. So, fuck Nick!

John: I have these headaches that come and go
Beth and Y/N: *Walk in the room*
John: There they go again
——————————————————————
Jimmy: How do Y/N and Beth usually get out of these messes?
Lee: They don't.
Rip: They just make a bigger mess that cancels the first one out
——————————————————————
Teeter *drunk*: me and Y/N sittin' in a tree, k-i-s-s-i-s-s-i-p-p-i
——————————————————————
Jamie: I have a bad feeling about this…
Y/N: What do you mean?
Jamie: Don't you ever get that little voice in your head that tells you if you're going to get into trouble?
Y/N: …no?
Jamie: …that explains so much

Regardless They’ll Always Be Dutton’s
Tumblr media
I just had an idea about a story that I think would be great. It would be a Lee Dutton x reader with alittle kayce x reader - request from @cookiez56-blog
Shutting the front door I gazed out back into the front yard seeing my two children William and Lana who we’re playing tag in the grass off the front porch. My father in law John was sitting beside my husband Lee. Sitting across from them on a small wooden chair I noticed that John was looking at Lana for a long time. “Is something wrong, John?”
“I might be wrong. But I don’t miss anything on this ranch. So does someone want to tell me why Lana looks more like Kayce then she does you and Lee. Cause I want to know if I’m just not awake yet this morning or not.” John ran a hand over his chin in thought then he messed with his white cowboy hat on his head.
Lee and I shifted our gaze back to each other before he reached over grasping my hand in his seeing that I was starting to let some tears fall remembering that day. “He was an idiot to ever do that to you, Y/n.”
“Kayce, I have to tell you something and I’m not sure the best way to do this so….here it is I’m pregnant.” Running my hands through my hair we were about to graduate high school in a few weeks before I found out I had missed my period.
Kayce dropped his hands at his side’s changing his demeanor completely from what I thought he would. “We can’t do this anymore, Y/n.”
“What are you saying?” I dared to ask him horrified of his next response.
The youngest Dutton sent me a half sympathetic look. “Y/n, it won’t work between us anymore. I’m going into the navy and you won’t want to stay worried about me all the time. And you’re probably not going to keep the baby anyway, whoever it belong to.”
“It’s yours asshat!” I blurted out throwing my hands away from my sides feeling heartbroken at what he was saying. “I lost my virginity to you. You’re the only person I have ever slept with!”
He shook his head removing his hat running his fingers through his hair frustrated at me and himself maybe. “I…I don’t know what to say. I didn’t think that it was that easy for you to get…especially the first time. I can’t do this.” He slowly turned on his feet beginning to walk away from me and back up to the main front porch of his family’s home.
Running forward I grabbed Kayce’s wrist holding him to a stop and slapped him across the face where it hurt my hand afterwards. He held his burning cheek that was red. “You are an asshole Kayce John Dutton. I tell you that I’m pregnant and you say that you want nothing to do with me or this kid!”
“Would you believe me if I said I’m terrified as hell and you don’t have to keep the baby.” He grunted still holding his burning red cheek.
Shaking my head I spun on my feet walking away from him about to leave the ranch but I remembered that I left my jacket in the barn. Heading into the barn I grabbed it before I felt heavy tears falling down my face. Throwing my jacket I screamed just kicking the wooden wall with my boots so frustrated and heartbroken by what Kayce just said to me. Gripping my hair in my fingers I heard someone walking towards me. “I don’t want to talk to you ever again Kayce!”
“It’s not Kayce, it’s Lee.” Whipping my head around I slumped my shoulders recognizing his older brother coming towards me. He removed his tan brown hat noticing that I was sobbing through tears. “Hey what’s wrong honey?”
“I’m pregnant with your brothers child…it’s Kayce’s. But he..he just broke up with me and said he doesn’t want it. Lee I, I have no idea what to do next. I don’t think it’s right to abort the baby but otherwise I’m on my own now.” Wrapping my arms around myself I avoided his gaze sniffling through tears that hadn’t stopped coming.
Lee didn’t waste another second before he tugged me into his chest holding me tightly against him. He had one hand in my hair and the other down my back letting me cry into his shirt until I had got it all out and he had a plan inside his mind. He gently held my face in his hands wiping away the tears that had stayed on my cheek. “Y/n, this is what we’re going to do. Nobody knows that you’re pregnant. You and Kayce haven’t been showing off your relationship so we can pass the baby off as mine.”
“Oh Lee I can’t ask you to do that. I mean what if you find someone you actually care about and want to marry someone else someday.” I felt guilty that he might be giving something up to help me out.
The eldest Dutton pressed his forehead against mine not backing down from his plan. “You’re not asking I’m offering you this option. And maybe someday if we got closer we could marry and make this work better. Cause from where I’m standing you wouldn’t be the worst person to be married too.”
Lee and I hadn’t said a word since John was still staring at us waiting for an answer. We really didn’t know what to say to him, as far as he knew until now Lana was Lee’s daughter. Getting to my feet Lee followed my actions taking my hand with my wedding ring on it trying to tell me everything was going to be okay. “Dad, I just want you to know that it was my plan the whole time. Y/n came to me crying and in a panic. So I did whatever I thought would help her.”
“So what we’re saying is that you we’re right. Lana is actually Kayce’s daughter and William is Lee’s. Kayce said he wanted nothing to do with the baby and Lee offered me more than I could have imagined. I’m sorry we didn’t tell you. I…we just thought it was better that no one knew the truth.” Moving my freehand around in front of me I felt a nervous pit in my stomach waiting for his answer.
John tapped his fingers on the armrests of the chair. “If you’re thinking I’d be angry you don’t have anything to be worried about. Regardless of who the birth father is they are each still my grandkids. I love Lana and William both equally.”
“Oh thank you. John I can’t thank you enough.” Covering my mouth with my hands I smiled through happy tears before I moved forward hugging my father in law.
He hugs me back smiling towards his eldest son. “You’re welcome Y/n…you did a good job son.”
We turned our heads seeing the two you kids running up the stairs bouncing around in front of us. Lana had slight curly hair that was the color of Kayce’s hair but she had my eye color. William had my hair color but he was given Lee’s eyes. “Mommy. Daddy, can we get some ice cream?” William asked spinning around in his tiny cowboy boots.
“If grandpa John says it’s okay.” Lee responded wrapping an arm around my waist tugging me into his side smiling down at them.
John tilted his head towards the inside of the house. “Go on kiddos. Just don’t eat too much before dinner.”
“Thank you, grandpa.” Lana ran away from her brother throwing her arms around her grandfather’s neck making him smile toward me and Lee silently telling us that both the kids would be good cowboys and cowgirls when they grow up.

Cowboy Like Me (Pt. 3)
Warnings: Smut, angst, cheating, rough sex and slight degradation.
Summary: Rip knows that Y/N slept with one of the cowboys, but will he be able to figure out which one? Also, Kayce and Y/N finally talk about what they want and which leads to *ahem* sexual relations and the official start of the affair.
Authors Note: This story is on Wattpad with an OC! My username is smashedrose and it keeps the same premise, although I would like to edit it further in the future.
———————————————————————
“Well who the fuck did then?” I hear my cousin state angrily “Shes not even twenty one yet, and here you are sneaking her into a bar and using her as a pawn.”
“I wasn’t twenty one when you snuck me in either.” Beth groans
“Yeah will this ain’t about us. She has had enough to deal with and here you are dragging her into your battles.” Rip yells, pacing and glaring at the blonde woman standing in front of him.
I make my way near the bunkhouse when I hear him yell at me “This ain’t over for you either! I didn’t bring you here for you to treat it like some damn dating game!”
———————————————————————
The boys eventually came back around dusk and went to their beds, leaving me alone with my thoughts.
How am I going to confront Kayce?
What happened to Jenkins?
Why don’t I feel guilty?
My thoughts are interrupted by the break of the door, which I almost missed due to the loud snoring coming from under my bunk. I open my eyes to adjust to the dark and hear a voice whisper my name.
“Y/N? Ya up?” I glance over and see Kayce standing near the wall, trying to stay hidden in case anyone happened to be up.
“Yeah, just give me one second. I’ll meet you outside.” I whisper back before climbing out of bed quietly and slipping on a coat and shoes.
Here goes nothing.
I make my way out the door and find him sitting on the fence staring at the sunrise. I make my way over to him, limping slightly due to the wooden bench he fucked me on a few hours before. Coming to a rest near him, I look up and he sighs.
“Look. You didn’t have to agree to-“
“When we’re you going to tell me you had a wife?” I ask, anxiety rushing through me and wanting to get this conversation over with as fast as possible.
“Beth told you.” He groans and looks at his hands “Look, I wasn’t expecting this to happen. At least not this soon. I was just happy for once talking to you and forgot.”
“You forgot you had a wife?” I’m taken aback by this, was he always such an asshole?
“No. I knew I had one and trust me I wish I didn’t.” He jumps off the fence and comes to stand next to me, taking my hands in his “I understand if you want to end whatever this was. You can walk away and i’ll call it a drunken one night stand.”
“I don’t know what to-“ I start but he continues speaking.
“But I barely know you and i’m so fucking attracted to you and I just need an escape.”
I look down at his calloused hands on top of mine, taking a deep breath before replying “I’ll be your escape for a few weeks before I leave. But the second this gets messy, I’m out.”
He looks relieved by this and nods his head, placing a kiss on top of mine.
“Oh and also, don’t do that lovey shit cause unlike you I’m not married and tend to fall easily.”
———————————————————————
I wake up back in my bunk alone, after spending the sunrise with Kayce. I look around and see everyone else getting ready for the day.
I’m gonna need a hot shower after last night.
I knock on the door only to hear a man yell “One fucking second!” Before opening it, clad in only a towel around his waist. I recognize him as the one with the guitar and hear him let out a laugh.
“Well darlin’ if I knew it was you I wouldn’t have used that tone. Wanna hop on in?” He winks, making me roll my eyes and slam the door. Grabbing my shoes and heading outside.
“Where ya going?” I hear him yell as I make my way down the gravel path to Rip’s house. I take a deep breath and knock on the door, hoping his anger subsided.
The door opens and he seems surprised to see me, saying nothing as I make my way inside and look around. “Where’s your shower?”
“Take one later, you’re gonna be covered in cow shit today.” He says and motions me out the door “And also, don’t think I forgot. We’re gonna be having a talk later.”
———————————————————————
I spent the whole day palpating cows and I was indeed covered in cow shit. I was pissed off beyond belief and my back still hurt, so I headed back into the empty bunkhouse.
God damn bed. That bench would’ve been more comfortable than that sorry piece of shit.
Opening the door, i’m greeted by the sight of Kayce sitting on my bed with his legs dangling off.
“You sure know how to turn a guy on.” He laughs taking in my appearance.
“Shut the fuck up and either fuck me in that shower or get out.” I state, begging to slip off my clothes.
“They’re gonna come back soon, i’ll take you to the main house and i’ll fuck you any way you want there.” He jumps off the bed and wrinkles his nose “But please do shower.”
I punch his arm lightly and grab a change of clothes, following him out the door and attempting to be as discreet as possible.
———————————————————————
A shower is exactly what I needed. I stepped out and wrapped myself in a towel, feeling my foul mood subside and the stress from the day melt off. I creak open the door, seeing Kayce laying on the bed waiting for me.
“Well? Still want me to fuck you?” He asks, motioning to the bed.
I drop the towel and sit down next to him, leaning up the kiss him only to be shut down by this hand wrapping around my neck and his mouth near my ear.
“After that little outburst I think you deserve a little punishment.” He bites down on the earlobe before flipping me over on my stomach and angling my ass in the air.
He reaches his hand down to rest on my core and lets out a groan at the wetness that drips on it. “Damn Y/N, all ready for me.” He slips a finger in and makes the come hither motion, making me moan into the pillow.
I hear a belt buckle and jeans hit the floor and feet the hot head of his dick on my opening. I push back slightly, in an attempt to stick it in me, and i’m bet with a harsh swat on the ass making me scream.
“I’m in charge right now.” And with that he shoves his full length in me, making me see stars.
His pace is brutal, hands gripping my ass and occasionally spanking me. I’m at a loss for words and feel his hands in my hair, yanking me up while still fucking me.
“Shit- Fuck Kayce yes-“ He spanks me again causing me to scream.
“You think you’ve been a good girl? Think you deserve this dick?” He asks, headboard slamming ruthlessly against the wall.
I cant reply, caught up in the brutal pounding and I feel his hand make his way onto my clit, rubbing harshly and making my legs jello.
I fall back down, shaking and can feel my orgasm quickly building. He leans back down and says “Tell me, do you think you deserve to cum?”
“Please. Please!” I moan out, biting the pillows.
“Well if you say so.” He chuckles and continues to rub me while keeping up his pace. I can feel the beads of sweat hitting me but and my mind is in fragments as I feel the dam break.
He groans and I can feel him finish inside me, hot spurts of cum leaking out of me as he pulls out. Kayce lays down next to me panting and tucks a few strands of hair away from my face.
“Stay with me tonight? Everyone is out of the house.”
I nod with a smile and scoot closer, making him wrap his arms around me and as my head lays on his chest.
I guess that talk with Rip can wait another day.

3 - Remembering Lee
Tumblr media
Part 4
Raised Fair Share Of Hell
Tag list - @bvbwestfall @hcwthewestwaswcn @child-of-of-the-sunshine @elenavampire21 @keep-the-wolves-close
That next morning was silent between Kayce and I while we rode our way back up to the main house seeing the rest of his family standing there waiting for us. I dismounted my horse watching Kayce riding Lee’s horse carrying his dead body. “Go straight to Jamie while it’s still fresh.” John rode up on a horse taking the reins of the other horse.
“Go. I’ll help your father.” I pushed him forward when he glanced at me before he finally walked up towards the house. Turning my attention back to my father in law he picked up his son's body onto his horse. “John, do you need some help?”
He shakes his head, tipping his brown hat to me riding off. “That’s not necessary. Go be with your daughter, Alissa.” I did the best I could with my injured ankle to climb back on my horse riding up to the house and getting off basically falling on the dirt ground.
“Who do I need to fight that clearly injured you.” Beth’s voice met my ears while I hopped up the stairs on one leg putting most of my weight on the wooden railing until I reached her.
She offered her arm to me so she could help me get inside the house and we sat down on the living room coach. “Kayce already took care of the asshole. The dead guy is also the one who killed your brother - ah that’s better.”
“What can I get you? A dirty martini.” She offers standing in front of me.
I laid my head back on the coach eyeing my injured ankle that I had propped up on one of the coach pillows. “I’ll take some alcohol later tonight. But can you get Kayce and some medical stuff for my ankle?”
“Sure.” She walked away going down the hallway.
Running my hands down my face I sighed heavily still picturing Lee’s body collapsing in front of me. I knew I should have stayed by his side and maybe just maybe this wouldn’t have happened. “Mommy!” Lifting my head up slightly I recognized my daughters voice before she jumped in my lap with excitement.
“Oooh hey Little Rae.” I felt the wind nearly get knocked out of me, smiling up at her.
She bounced on my legs wanting to play. “Can we go play in the barn now that you’re back?”
“Aww I’m sorry baby. But mommy needs to rest since some bad guy hurt my ankle.”
Faith slides down, poking my left ankle and I winced feeling her poke me but it didn’t hurt too much especially when she was smiling at me. “Can I kiss it better?”
“Aww that’s cute but I’m okay.” I chuckled at her seeing Beth come back in the room with a first aid kit and Kayce followed behind her. “Hey can you watch her for a second please Beth?”
She nodded, pushing Faith towards the door and took her outside. “Come on, niece.”
“I should have gone with you. Dropping Tate and Monica took longer than I thought it would. I’m sorry, darling.” Kayce began apologizing, taking out some gauze and began rolling up my pant leg. I had already taken off my boots.
I held myself up on my elbows seeing the wound had a bruise and I was thankful that I was able to somewhat walk at the moment. “You don’t have to apologize, Kace. If anything, what happened to your brother was my fault.” I sucked in a shaky breath feeling some tears welling up in my eyes.
“Don’t say that, Lissa Rae. It wasn’t your fault.” Kayce shot his head up, dropping the gauze and holding my face in his hands.
I sniffed through tears pushing his hands away. “Kayce, don’t say that. It happened because I wasn’t by his side. I let him get shot and - I couldn’t even avenge his death in that moment. You avenged his death and saved my life.”
“You did everything you could. You didn’t know that was going to happen. Now against my father’s better judgment I think we might have to take you to the hospital cause I think the bullet is still inside of your body.” He suggested getting up from his knees, leaning down to pick me up bridal style.
I wrapped my arms around his neck laying my head on his chest wincing as we walked down the steps and got me settled in his truck. “I’ll call my sister and ask her to watch Faith. Considering your father is gonna need to work with Jamie and Beth to prepare the funeral.” Reaching into my jacket pocket I take my phone out typing in her phone number.
“It’s kind of funny to think back then that Lee might have had a crush on your sister.” Kayce chuckled, turning the truck on and driving underneath the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch sign.
I snorted out a laugh at my husband’s remark. “Lana Dutton doesn't sound too bad.”
“Alissa Dutton sounds way better.” Kayce smirked in my direction.
I playfully shoved his shoulder hearing the ringing stop on the phone and my sister's voice came to my ears. “Hey sis, what’s up?”
“Are you busy with the ranch for a few hours? I’ve got to go to the hospital and the rest of the Dutton family is busy right now. So Kayce and I were hoping you could babysit.”
My sister was in her late 30’s whistled through the phone and I could hear some cattle making noises in the background before she responded to my question. “We’re just finishing up doing the branding for our cattle. But I can watch her if you’re okay she sees what we’re doin’.”
“She lives on a ranch, Alana. I think she’ll be fine.” Kayce called, entering the conversation between us.
My sister asked a question where I paused before answering. “So why are you going to the hospital?”
“Um - it was a dispute over cattle.” Glancing over to Kayce he sent me a weak look figuring it was best to tell her the other part in person when we got home. “There’s more but I’ll tell you that later when we pick up Faith.”
Alana replied by hanging up the phone call. “Sounds good. See y’all later.” I put my phone away leaning back in the passenger seat thinking back on our sophomore year.
Park County High School - 10 years ago
“Are you sure your parents won’t be home for the weekend? We already have to worry about my dad finding out.” Kayce asked walking with me out into the parking lot knowing our rides were almost here to pick us up from school.
I shrugged my backpack onto my left shoulder placing a hand on my boyfriend’s shoulder. “Kace, calm down. My sister already said she’s got us covered. She’s done this before and they never found out.”
“I know I just don’t want your father to hate me if I was involved in breaking something on your ranch. Our families share a fence line after all.” He rubbed a hand over the back of his neck nervously before we heard two horn honks and a dark red pickup truck driving toward the curb we stood on.
The truck window rolled down revealing my sister and his older brother Lee looking at us. “Quite being a worry wart, little brother. Now you two get your asses in the backseat.”
“Ladies first.” Kayce opened the door for me and I climbed in first with him shutting the door when he got inside the truck.
Alana shifted around in the front passenger seat. “Mommy and daddy are heading to Texas in an hour and they already gave me the keys to the house. So we can go to the liquor store and not worry of getting caught.”
“What about your ranch hands?” Lee asked her.
She snatched his black Cowboy hat from his head hitting him harshly in the arm with it. “Lee Dutton, how dare you doubt my planning skills! I made a deal with them and said they could take part in whatever alcohol was left. So long as they didn’t blab.”
“I guess that can work,  Alana.” He responded, eyeing her nervously since she was glaring at him.
She sniped. “What did I say about calling me that?”
“I meant Lana. Now can I have my hat back?” Lee asked, correcting his words. She handed it over to him and he grabbed her hand locking eyes with one another not saying anything more than that.
Kayce and I just sat in the backseat just sitting in silence watching the pair. It was obvious that there was something going on between them, but they’d never admit it. “Um, so what should we get at the liquor store?” I cleared my throat not being able to handle the awkwardness.
“Yeah - let’s go.” Lee drew his head away from hers, tuning the truck engine on and began driving out of the parking lot.
Alana tucked hair behind her ear. “Sorry y’all - I was thinkin’ we could get techquila, some beer, wine and other things.” She shrugged her shoulders silently, glancing back at Lee.
“I’ll bet you five dollars that they’ll kiss later tonight.” Kayce leaned over whispering in my ear.
Even he could see it was an overwhelming sense that there was something going on between them. “I’ll take that bet, Dutton.” Clasping my hand in his we shook on it hoping we were right years later.

Raised Fair Share Of Hell

“Faith, Faith, Faith!” I hollered from the porch searching for my daughter since I hadn’t seen her up this morning yet. Walking down the steps I went to the barn still calling her name, still not finding her in there. “Faith!”
“Faith, get away from the fence!” Whipping my head around at the different voice I recognized it belonged to Rip Wheeler, John's most loyal ranch hand. He was tugging her backwards away from it when a horse charged at it.
The horse that was in the fenced pen had just thrown John off into the dust. “Are you okay, grandpa?” Faith asked him.
“I'll be okay, Faithy Rae.” John groaned, popping his back when he walked up to the fence looking at Rip. “We need somebody else to break that horse in.”
Rip paused knowing just the one. “Jimmy's new here. He's the youngest and this guys got still got some fighting left in him.”
“Sounds Good “ John agreed.
I finally walked up to the group picking up my daughter in my arms and she laid her head in the crook of my neck. “What are y'all talking about over here?”
“Talking about who can run the shit out of that new horse - oh sorry.” Rip apologized remembering that a kid was in our conversation.
Faith lifted her head up from my chest. “Mommy, have you ever run the spirit out of a horse?”
“I have a couple of times and it’s no fun for your butt.” I told her simply.
John chuckled, bending his head down glancing at me. “Oh I’ve seen the last horse you broke in before you got pregnant and that escalated into something so much worse. I thought your father was gonna have your ass.”
“I remember that incident quite well, sir.” Rip chuckled at me.
Faith tugged on my shirt curious. “What happened, mommy?”
“Oh just some somewhat harmless fun is all. Back when you're mommy was a different person.” I explained to her thinking about the night all of us kids get our asses handed to us by our parents.
It was a clear evening on my parents ranch with Alana and I deciding to invite over the Dutton kids for some fun. Jamie and Beth had already gone off to college for the year so that just left Kayce, Lee, Alana and me. Rip was far too loyal to John Dutton to come participate in our midnight fun. Alana flings open the double barn doors and together we walked up to the newest horse that our father had bought. “This is gonna be so much fun.” She whispered to me, leading the horse out by the reins on its nose until we stood outside the barn doors.
“I can't believe you agreed to let me do this.” I admit to my older sister, sometimes thinking she would rat me out yet she had done nothing of the sort yet.
She blew a raspberry at me teasingly. “Should have more trust in me and besides daddy and mommy will be happy if this horse has been broken in by sunrise.”
“We can only hope. Did you tell Lee and Kayce about this?”
She snorted a laugh. “You think Kayce is gonna back out of anything when you're involved. Plus Lee surprisingly enjoys fun now and then.”
We began walking back towards one of the empty fields since we figured it was best they didn't hear what we were doing at midnight. Alana held onto the horse reins hearing rusdiling coming from the trees. I squinted my eyes trying to see into the darkness until a waving flashlight came into view. “Turn the flashlight off, Lee or we'll get caught for sure.” I heard Kayce say as the two brothers came out of the treeline and climbed over ome of our property fences.
“Sorry you know daddy had some raccoon traps laid out. Don't want to lose a foot in one of those.” Lee admitted to his youngest brother.
I finally chimed in tired of waiting on their chit chat. “Hey ladies, are you done so we can ride a wild horse?”
“Yeah let's go!” Kayce cheers, throwing his fists in the air.
Lee nudged him with his elbow. “Ladies first remember.”
“Okay, how about this. Me and Lee ride separately since we're old enough to. Then Lissa, you and Kayce ride together to make up the weight of being one person. We'll see who can stay on the longest before getting bucked off like if we were ridin’ a bull.” My sister explained and we all nodded our heads in agreement, backing away when she began climbing up on the horses saddle. She tool hold of the reins kicking him in the belly before he started throwing her around but she managed to stay on for about 20 minutes. The horse launched her off and I saw land on her back before Lee ran as fast as he could grabbing the reins so the horse halted.
Lee offered my sister his hand helping her up from the dirt. “Here, take my hand.” She placed her hands in his and he tugged her up to stand and she held the reins so he could climb on the horse.
“I’ll show you how we Dutton’s ride a wild horse.” Lee kicked it in the belly before the animal began kicking its legs back and forth doing everything it could to throw him off. Yet he was determined to stay on longer than my sister. It was a few seconds longer than hers before he managed to let go and jump off landing on his feet. “That’s how Dutton’s ride!”
Kayce looped my arm through his and we smirked at our siblings. I climbed up on the horse first and he got on behind me holding the reins with my hands underneath his own. “Let’s go! - Oh yeah - shit Kace.” Once kicking it in the belly the horse ran around in some circles bouncing me and Kayce up into the air but we didn’t dare let go of the reins.
Shifting my gaze up over the horse's mane I saw that he was charging his way straight for my parents fence. “Jump - you’ve gotta jump!” Lee and my sister hollered at the top of their lungs terrified.
“One, two - three.” Kayce countered down as we got super close to the fence before he wrapped his arms around my waist and he jumped taking me with him. I released my grasp on the reins tumbling around into the dust and once it cleared watched the wild horse burst right through the fence and kept running out onto the Dutton land.
Lee and my sister ran over to check and see if we were hurt. Kayce removed his arms from around my waist, dusting off his already dusty black Cowboy hat he always wore. “I wasn’t expecting that to happen at all.” I huffed, dropping my shoulders trying to catch my breath.
“That was one of the stupidest things I think I’ve ever done.” Lee admitted causing all of us to laugh alongside him.
I scanned the broken fence feeling a nervous pit in the bottom of my stomach. “How much trouble do you think we’ll be in tomorrow morning?” I got up to stand with the other three standing around me seeing the same thing I did.
“Royalty fucked.” Kayce uttered and I wished I could have laughed that off the next morning our parents found out what happened.
After I had put Faith to bed for the night I creeped down the stairs attempting to not wake anyone else up that was sleeping in the main house. Making my way over I laid down on the living room couch, closing my eyes to rest after a long day of work until I heard the front door creak open. “Who the hell is visiting this late at night?”
“Go up to the bedroom at the end of the hall on the left.” I heard Kaycee’s voice enter the large house but I saw Tate come inside before I saw him come in with a small duffel bag that he sat down by the front door, shutting it closed.
I waited until the young kid had made his way upstairs before I said a word to my husband crossing my arms over my chest wondering where he was for most of the day. “What is he doing here, Kayce? Is Monica with him too?”
“Monica’s - um.” He trailed off, not finishing the sentence.
I took a few steps toward the cowboy needing an answer even though I probably wasn’t going to like the answer. “Kayce, why is he here?”
“Monica got injured at the school she works at and she’s in the hospital.” He replied.
Covering my mouth with a hand I gasped feeling sorry for the young kid now. “Oh gosh, is she going to be okay?”
“I don’t know. She’s got a head injury and I couldn’t leave him in the hospital with her like that even though he didn’t want to leave her.” He shrugged his shoulders, removing his hat from his head.
I closed the gap between us wrapping my arms around his body and he wrapped his arms around me. He buried his face into my shoulder crying for a few minutes while I whispered into his hair. “It’s gonna be okay. She’ll be okay - Tate can stay until she gets better.” He mumbled a thank you and I sighed just holding him until he got better. Even when Monica and I had disagreements with each other I’d look out for her son as if he was my own.

Standing in front of Lee’s freshly dug headstone and empty grave that he would be put in a few minutes later. I was wearing a short sleeve black dress that went down to my knees. “Alissa.” Opening my eyes I slowly glanced over my shoulder watching my husband walking up to me.
“What is it, Kace?” I questioned him when he finally stopped to stand beside me. He was wearing a full black suit, white shirt and a white tea shirt underneath with his dusty black Cowboy hat.
“How’s your ankle in that boot?”
My gaze lowered down to my left ankle in a doctor's boot that the hospital had told me I would have to wear for a while. “I’ll get used to it.” I answered his question not liking it but was thankful the surgery to remove the bullet didn’t go horribly wrong.
“That’s not what I’m asking. I don’t want you putting too much on it to be here today.”
Grasping his hand in mine I rubbed my thumb over the black wedding band on his left hand. “Kayce, I want to be here. For you and your family. Y’all have known me my entire life. Besides, Lee was like a brother to me. I need to say goodbye to him.”
“How did I get so lucky with you, Ms. Lambert?” Kayce asked, cradling the side of my face in his freehand.
Reaching down inside the front of my dress I drew out the necklace chain I wore with my wedding ring on it. “That’s Mrs. Dutton to you, Kayce John. And you got so lucky cause we’re best friends.” I decided to wear it mostly as a necklace too worried I’d lose the ring that meant so much to me.
“Looks like it’s time.” He squeezed my hand in his seeing the casket being brought close by one of the trucks. He removed his hand from mine, walking over and being a pull bear for his brother alongside John , Rip and a few other ranch hands.
The casket was set up and lowered into the ground before I noticed John walk up and stand in front of it. Each family member went up to say their goodbye leaving me and Faith the last to go. “I'm gonna miss you, Uncle Lee. Thanks for my birthday present - and I hope you are running a beautiful ranch up in the sky.” She laid some flowers over his casket stepping back crying into her father's jacket.
Lee had gotten her a tiny horse necklace for her birthday with the money that his father paid him.
“Hey, Lee. First off I - um I want to say I'm sorry. I'm sorry that this happened to you when I could've stopped it.” I felt some tears welling up in my ears and I gripped my ring necklace for strength. “I know I shouldn't put the weight on myself but I am because - because I'm going to miss you so much. I'm gonna miss you and my sister pretending like there's not a spark between you two. I'm going to miss you being Faith's favorite uncle. I'm going to miss our flour fights at 2am. Lee - I'm gonna miss you. But don't you worry I am going to make sure your name and memory aren't forgotten.”
Kayce’s hand touched my shoulder softly. “Alissa - easy now. I've got you - I've got uou honey.” I spun around throwing myself into his chest and he wrapped his arms around my shaking body. We just held each other for a little while until everyone slowly made their way back to the main house.
Gator had prepared dinner for both of our families to enjoy for the next couple of days. The sun was setting over the Dutton Ranch when I went to find my sister Alana standing on the front porch by herself. Pushing the door opened I walked outside. “What are you doing out here, sis?”
“Just needed some air. Today's been - rough. How are you doing?” She asked me rolling her shoulders before dropping them.
I came over leaning my elbows on the wooden porch railing. “Pretty much the same. Faith, just says she wants him back for her birthday. I actually told her that we'd celebrate somehow once all this dies down but she has to understand he's not coming back.”
“It sucks that she misses him so much.” Alana glanced at me, seeing my wedding ring dangling from my neck. “You know who's wedding ring that is right?”
“Yeah.”
She pressed on clasping her hands together. “And did you know that Lee proposed to me with that exact ring?”
“What! Why are you just telling me this now? Have you two been secretly married this whole time?”
She touched my hand seeing that I was getting worked up over her bombshell of news. “Let me explain. First off nobody in either of our families knew about it. We were going to announce it until the day you came home and told us you were pregnant. So Lee and I talked it over and he decided it was best for you and his brother to get married and raise the baby together more than that ring would benefit us at the time.”
“Alana, I - why didn't you tell me sooner?” I felt slightly heartbroken that she gave up her marriage to Lee Dutton for me.
She intertwined our hands together giving me a weak smile. “Because you were going through a lot. Dad was pissed and mom was busy preparing for the baby so it just didn't seem right.”
“So I was right all along about you and Lee?” I asked with a hopeful yet shocked smile on my face.
She nodded her head yes. “We just weren't so obvious the way you and Kayce were - better yet still are today.”
“We are not!” I scolded her.
My sister smirked. “It's nothing to be ashamed of if you want to climb into bed with him. You're already married anyhow.”
“Alana!” I turned my face away, blushing slightly, clearing my throat. “But you two still could have gotten married and had kids for both ranches. So why didn't you?”
She shrugs her shoulders in response. “Didn't ever seem like the right thing for us. Lee and I never wanted to talk about that since that's all our daddy's wanted to talk about.”
“God gave me two daughters and no sons so I'm gonna need them to give me some grandbabies to keep this land of ours.” I did the best impression of my father as I could, still deeply loving him.
Alana was in agreement with me. “We just wanted to enjoy the pressure being off of us, especially the day you got pregnant. You're my little sister so I did what was best for you even though it was making me lose some happiness.”
“I'm sorry.” I wrapped my arms around her in a hug and she hugged me back sniffing through some tears of her own.
“It's okay, Lissa. I was right about something though with our families.” She broke the hug slightly seeing confusion written on my face until she finished her sentence. “I guess Dutton’s and Lambert’s were always meant to go together.”
A few days after the funeral I was walking to the barn to saddle my horse so I could take Faith on a ride yet I halted in my tracks outside the door hearing Jamie and John discussing something inside. “Did they identify Kayce?”
“Not yet.”
“Who are the agents we're talking about?” John asked him.
Jamie responded. “It's, uh, Tom Reynolds and Aaron McReary.”
“Reynolds I can deal with.” He admits. “I don't know this McReary.”
“Yeah, he lives in the south end of the valley. Word is he likes his religion.”
John questioned his son. “As in "won't tell a lie" likes it?”
“Yeah, that would be my guess.”
“Find out where he goes to church. Anything else? Anything else? You said there were a few.”
“The medical examiner's report. You're not gonna like it.” Jamie began explaining.
“Who else has seen the report?” John pressed on for answers.
“The only ones who have seen it want it to change.”
My father in law muttered. “Then it'll change.”
“It means they're doctors. Which means they took an oath, and it wasn't to you. No matter what we do, the photographs won't change. The body won't change. It'll tell the same story - to anybody who looks.” Jamie snapped back at him mentioning some good points.
“The body's buried, Jamie. Relax.” John walked up near his son’s face.
Jamie tried to make him understand. “Yeah, but when they see the report…”
“When they see the report, what? You think I'm just gonna let them dig up my son?” John getting closer up in his face.
He explained to him with a heavy sigh. “When they see the report, they won't ask. They're just gonna do it, Dad. I think we should…”
John held a hand up to him. “No, don't say it.”
“I think we should beat them to it.”
John stomped forward shoving his son against one of the horse stalls behind him staying in his face. “All right, don't say it. Don't even think it.”
“Kayce shot him in the forehead while he laid on his back.” Jamie declares while I felt a nervous tightness in my chest form at his words, remembering the incident all too well.
John growled in his face in disbelief. “We don't know it was Kayce.”
“He was executed. Five bullets in a circle, like this. Name the livestock officer who could do that.” Jamie asked him the question John and I both feared he would say, pointing to his round lawyer badge on his shirt.
Turning my attention away from the door I threaded my fingers into my hair, beginning to feel powerless in this situation. “What are we gonna do, Kayce?”

Cooper’s dad was true to his word and picked me up from the campus right at six and it took us an hour to get to the hospital where my boyfriend would be getting discharged at eight.  Climbing into the passenger's seat of his truck the drive  was completely silent until we arrived at the hospital and I saw them bringing him out in a wheelchair.  Getting out of the front seat I went into the backseat so his father could help him get into the front seat.  Once he was settled we made our drive home.   Tommy pulled out a cigarette, placing it in his mouth then picking up the lighter.  “Hope you don't mind back there, Ms. Dutton.”
“My aunt Beth smokes all the time, sir.”
Tommy set the lighter down focusing his attention on the road.  “Well, I guess now you understand what I mean by "roughnecking's dangerous."
“Says the two-pack-a-day smoker.” Cooper rolls his eyes.
His father glared in his son's direction.  “In three months, you could've had a fucking degree in geology, and you…”
“I don't need a degree.” Cooper cut him short.  “I learned all I need about geology.  I don't want to teach the shit, I want to live it. I want to be a landman.”
“Your girlfriend back there works on a ranch but she's still going to get a degree in what exactly  -”
“Veterinarian, Mr. Norris.”  I replied to his unfinished statement.
My boyfriend said back.  “That's her decision.  I should be able to do whatever I want with my life.”
“Well, for every Monty Miller, there's a hundred of me, all right?” His father blew out some smoke from his cigarette, putting it back in his mouth.
Cooper muttered under his breath yet his father heard his response.  “The only difference between you and Monty is Monty didn't quit.”
“Cooper!” I screamed gripping onto the seat with my fingernails when his father slammed the brakes on the road.  He swerved the truck onto the grass off the main road we were previously on and spun around so he could face his son when he began yelling.
“The difference in me and Monty is I don't have a fucking trust fund.  I didn't quit, I bled out. And besides, I don't see you speculating or banging on doors, or hustling mineral rights.  No, you're the worm on a drill crew.  Excuse me, you were. And your crew is fucking dead on day one. So, take the fucking hint!”
Cooper lifted his head up from his knees, slightly shocked at what had just happened.  “If I'm going to run an oil company one day, I need to know how every aspect of it works. The surveys, making the drill pad, moving the gear, housing the crew, setting the drill, capping the well, maintaining the well, all of it.”
“So, run an oil company. That's your plan now.” Tommy almost chuckled at the idea.
My boyfriend sat upright in his  now. “That's the dream. I don't have a plan yet.”
“Well, you're closer than most.” Tommy shifted in his seat checking on me in the backseat since I had just now stopped gripping onto the seat for my life.  “Are you alright back there?”
I gulped nervously with a simple head nod yes.  “I'm okay.”
Cooper inhales sharply. “I need a favor. Will you do me a favor?”
“Depends on what the favor is.” His father sniped back.
“Put me on another crew.”
Nearly climbing over the seat I screamed, shaking him by his shoulders.  “Are you freaking serious, Cooper?  You nearly died the other day!”
“I won't break my promise to you.” He glanced over his shoulder at me once I had plopped back down in my seat.
“You know, a lot of people are gonna blame you for what happened. Anytime something goes wrong, they always blame the worm.”
He replied to his father.  “Let them.”
“All right, I'll find you a crew.” His father turned the truck back onto the busy road driving along now.  “Listen, your sister's in town. You want to run by the house and see her?”
“I'd rather you drive me to the hospital so they can run that catheter back up my dick.” Cooper declared with annoyance in his voice.
Raising a brow I asked the two men.  “How horrible is this girl actually?”
“She takes after my ex wife.  Their mother, that's all you need to know.” Tommy tossed his cigarette out the driver's window of his truck, glancing over at his kid.  “You want to go by the café and get a beer?”
“It's eight in the morning.” Cooper remarks.
His father shook his head.  “It's Sunday.  What else you got to do?”
“She’s not old enough to drink though.” Cooper pointed back to me.
Tommy glanced over his shoulder eyeing me up and down slowly before responding.  “If you're sister can pull off 21 at 17 then so can she.  I'll make sure they never know.”  Staring at my boyfriend I nodded my head in agreement and that was it before we drove in the direction of the bar.
Oil House / Tommy's truck
Ainsley sat on the bed typing away on her computer before her phone rang showing her father’s number and so she swiped green answering it.  “Hey daddy, I'm just doing what you asked me to.  Are they with you right now?”
“No honey.  I dropped them off at the mancamp housing.  Did you find anything interesting?”
She turned the call on video showing him a whole list of things she had made about her brother’s girlfriend.  “Her family has lived on their ranch for over 100 years.  Her grandfather John was the Governor.  Her mother Alissa was wrongfully accused for the attempted murder on John but it turns out it was her Uncle Jamie who did it.  He's arrested now, and actually kinda cute.  I'll send you some pictures.”
Tommy rolled his eyes seeing multiple texts come through on his phone.  “Honey. I don't really-”
“He's cute ain't he daddy.”
He responded back.  “Sweetheart he's in prison for attempted murder.”
“Yeah but he used to be the state attorney General. And-”
Her father ran a hand down his face.  “Ainsley, what information do you have on Faith Dutton?  I need to know what this girl cares about.  A way to convince her to help get your brother to go back to college.”
“Um let's see.. her aunt Alana is the family lawyer alongside her grandmother Eliza Lambert.”  Ainsley paused scrolling through the article links she had saved on her computer.  “Her uncle Lee died in a cattle shootout, her aunt Beth hit a woman over the head with a beer bottle.”
Her father closed his eyes, sighing heavily.  “Ainsley, I need information on Faith.”
“Hang on there's a lot of interesting stuff to go through.  Oh! Like this one her father is an ex Navy Seal and now he's what they call a Livestock Commissioner.” She bites her lip, clicking away on her mouse pad.  “This family actually has quite a few felons in it.  There's this one hunter from 1923 named Spencer and his wife Alex.”
“Is there anything big on this girl specifically or not, honey?”
Ainsley took a sip of her diet coke.  “There was a huge targeted attack on the whole family years ago.  The most recent stuff I found out about her is that she did rodeo-”
Suddenly Tommy hears the suspenseful music and the picture of his ex wife comes up on his phone.  “God damn.  Ainsley we’ll talk at the house  - what do you want Angie?” He hung up his daughters call reluctantly, answering his ex wife’s.
“Where you headed?”
He decided to joke with her.  “To the strip club.”
She gasped in horror.  “While our daughter's there?”
“Yeah, she's meeting me there.  I thought it's time she sees the darker side of life.”
She didn't buy it afterwards, glaring at him.  “Where are you really headed?”
“I'm going home.” He responded to her.
She asked him simply.  “Do I need to come?”
“I already told you you don't need to come.”
“What if I want to come?” She kept pressing on.
“Why would you want to do that?”
She challenged him. “What if I did?”
“You want to leave Cabo and come to Midland, Texas to fuck your ex-husband in a rent house with three roommates? Why do I doubt that?” He rolled his eyes really wanting the conversation to be over with.
“Can't you just fucking want me to come? Why can't you do that?” She huffed trying to show some tears.
Tommy chuckled pretending to be really hurt if she didn't come and meet him in Texas and she just scowled at him the whole time. “Oh, honey, I want you to come, believe me. I mean, I just know you'll never do it. Breaks my heart. I really want you to.”
“You'll think about it later, I bet.” She teased.
He reminded her about Ainsley living in the house reaching up ready to hit the end call button. “Well, since I'm sharing. a bed with our daughter, I hope I don't think about it later.”
“I'll call you tomorrow.” She ended the call and he sighed in sweet relief.  He knew it would be hell if his ex wife ever met her son's girlfriend.
