What You Want is an S Curve

Excerpt from Bill McKibben's Substack, "The Crucial Years."

Regular readers of this column know that I think we’re engaged in the most desperate race in human history—a race between a rapidly unraveling climate, and a rapid buildout of renewable energy. The outcome of that race will determine just how many people die, how many cities drown, how many species survive. Pretty much everything else—efforts to restore corals, say, or worries about how exactly we’ll power long-haul aircraft—is noise at the margins; the decisive question is how those two curves, of destruction and construction, will cross. Oh, and the relevant time frame is the next half-decade, the last five or six “crucial years.”

So even amidst all the desperate news from climate science, I have some legitimately good numbers to update you on this morning. They come from the veteran energy analyst Kingsmill Bond and colleagues at the Rocky Mountain Institute, and they demonstrate that the world has moved on to the steep part of the S curve, which will sweep us from minimal reliance on renewable energy to—we must hope and pray— minimal dependence on fossil fuel. The angle of that curve may prove to be the most significant geometry of our time on earth, competing only with the slope of the Keeling Curve which documents the growing accumulation of co2 in the atmosphere above Mauna Loa.

It seems pretty clear, according to Bond’s team, that last year or this we will hit peak fossil fuel demand on this planet—the advent of cheap solar and wind and batteries, combined with rapidly developing technologies like heat pumps and EVs, has finally caught up with the surging human demand for energy even as more Asian economies enter periods of rapid growth: the question is whether we’ll plateau out at current levels of fossil fuel use for a decade or more, or whether we can make fossil fuel use decline enough to begin to matter to the atmosphere. 

And the numbers in the new report give at least some reason for hope: sun and wind are now growing faster than any other energy sources in history, and they are coming online faster that anyone had predicted, even in the last few years. In the last decade, “solar generation has grown 12 times, battery storage by 180 times, and EV sales by 100 times.” This charge has been led by China, where “solar generation up 37 times and EV sales up 700 time.” and which as a result is “poised to be the first major electrostate.” Europe, and indeed the whole OECD group, are now seeing rapid growth too, and the best news is that there are increasing signs that countries like India and Vietnam, where growth in demand will be fastest over the rest of the decade, are figuring out how to electrify their economies. Fossil fuel for generating electricity has peaked in Thailand, South Africa, and in all of Latin America.

Solar power in particular is about to become the most common way to produce electricity on this planet, and batteries will this year pass pumped-hydro as the biggest source of energy storage; the supply chain seems to be in place to continue this kind of hectic growth, as there are enough factories under construction to produce the stuff we need, and investment capital is increasingly underwriting cleantech (though a treacherously large supply of money continues to flow to fossil fuels). Pick your metric—the number of cleantech patents, the energy density of batteries, the size of wind turbine rotors—and we’re seeing rapid and continuing progress; the price of solar power is expected to drop by half again in the course of the decade, reinforcing all these trends. The adoption curves for cleantech look like the adoption curves for color tv, or cellphones—that is to say, from nothing to ubiquitous in a matter of years. 

A big reason for the ongoing change—and for ongoing optimism—is the simple efficiency of the technologies now ascendant.

A second report from Bond’s Rocky Mountain Institute, this one published last week, focused on these numbers, and they’re equally astounding. By their calculations, we waste more than half of the energy we use:

Out of the 606 EJ (an exajoule is roughly the annual energy consumption of New York City) of primary energy that entered the global energy system in 2019, some 33% (196 EJ) was lost on the supply side due to energy production and transportation losses before it ever reached a consumer. Another 30% (183 EJ) was lost on the demand side turning final energy into useful energy. That means that of the 606 EJ we put into our energy system per annum, only 227 EJ ended up providing useful energy, like heating a home or moving a truck. That is only 37% efficient overall.

We’ve invested mostly in increasing the volume of energy we use, not its efficiency—because that was what made big money for Big Oil. But cleantech is inherently more efficient: when you burn fossil fuel to make power, you lose two-thirds of the power to heat, which simply doesn’t happen with wind and sun. An EV translates 80-90% of the power it uses into propulsion, compared with well less than half for a car that runs on gas. A gas boiler is 85 percent efficient, which isn’t bad—but a heat pump is 300% efficient, because its main “fuel source” is the ambient heat of the atmosphere, which it translates into heating and cooling for your home. That means that the higher upfront costs of these technologies quickly translate into serious savings. And these kind of numbers bend curves fast

So I carried on supporting it, and enjoying every little act of “resistance” of imposing dullness. Spyker encouraged the brightness, started defending points of principle (amusingly in retrospect, the first time that happened was on customer cars!) but didn’t know how to solve the back-of-the-grid troubles either - it took Vijay Mallya a year to get the team back on an even keel. Once that was done, it felt like Jordan 2.0 again, and supporting it became easy. Twitter really helped, too. I’ve spent a certain amount of time talking to the various account admins, and it gave me a feel for how I can help them a little. Fans give teams motivational force. To cut a long story short, this has resulted in several visits to the factory reception to give the team treats, as well as them sending me a team shirt autographed with the entire night shift last year. I’m very proud of “my” team and hope that as Aston Martin, they can be even more successful. One day, I hope to work in their IT department, but it will take a lot of hard work to get there.

Notes on finishing Newton Forster; and my first impressions of Peter Simple.

You know Newton Forster is a weaker entry in the Marryat canon when the best parts of the book are Marryat’s non-fiction intrusions on the story. I read almost all of my Marryat novels as free Google e-books, and not coincidentally my 1838 edition of Newton Forster chose to illustrate one of Marryat’s intrusions rather than an event from the story on the frontispiece. I don’t dislike Newton Forster, the character, but as Marryat heroes go he is bland and severely lacking in sex appeal, despite being described as “very handsome.” 

The full title of the book is Newton Forster, or The Merchant Service and it’s unusual for being a Marryat novel of the Napoleonic wars period that isn't focused on the Royal Navy. Marryat gets to promote his pet cause of anti-impressment more than usual when Forster gets violently impressed, despite having a legal exemption as the master of a merchant vessel. Newton eventually becomes a captain on an East India Company ship, and even in this capacity he experiences naval battles against the (non-fictional) commerce raiding operations of French Admiral Charles-Alexandre Léon Durand, Comte de Linois, in the Indian Ocean, 1803.

Going into Newton Forster I was already aware of a scene in the book where the characters tour a plantation in the West Indies and, very distastefully, slavery is presented in a semi-positive light. It reminds me of that post about colonialist and imperialist themes in the Harry Potter books in that slavery is presented as not too immoral to support; as long as the enslavers treat the enslaved people kindly. Newton and his associates have an ambiguous reaction to a defense of slavery from a “good” planter, not exactly condemning it but clearly not sold on it either. (”none of them [the planter’s arguments] were sufficiently convincing to induce me to be a slave proprietor…. even the shadow of liberty is to be venerated by an Englishman,” Newton remarks.)

Like a lot of Marryat’s writing on slavery, you can sense that he’s wrestling with his own family connections. Marryat is very anti-slave trade, like most British people of his time, but at the same time his father had extensive holdings in the West Indies and the Marryat family directly profited from the stolen labor of enslaved people. Joseph Marryat, father of Frederick, was a member of parliament and an ardent anti-abolitionist.

If Marryat is disgracefully non-committal on chattel slavery (which he compares to factory wage labor and impressment more than once, implying that poor whites have it Just As Bad, essentially); he goes after the East India Company with surprising vehemence. I really did not expect a strong condemnation of colonialist policy from him, but here he digresses in Newton Forster:

Survey the empire of India; calculate the millions of acres, the billions with which it is peopled, and then pause while you ask yourself the question — how is it that a company of merchants claim it as their own? By what means did it come into their possession? 

Honestly, they will reply. Honestly! you went there as suppliants; you were received with kindness and hospitality, and your request was granted, by which you obtained a footing on the soil. Now you are lords of countless acres, masters of millions, who live or perish as you will; receivers of enormous tribute. — Why, how is this ? 

Honestly, again you say; by treaty, by surrender, by taking from those who would have destroyed us, the means of doing injury. Honestly! say it again, that heaven may register, and hell may chuckle at your barefaced, impudent assertion. 

No! by every breach of faith which could disgrace an infidel; by every act of cruelty which could disgrace our nature; by extortion, by rapine, by injustice, by mockery of all laws or human or divine. The thirst for gold, and a golden country, led you on; and in these scorching regions you have raised the devil on his throne, and worshiped him in his proud pre-eminence as Mammon.

Even more so than in The King’s Own, Marryat’s confessional digressions in Newton Forster are the most engaging parts of the book. His reaction to being critically lambasted by one of his former midshipmen; his thoughts on the writing process; his discussion of his education from the top of a mast-head. Tons of little gems throughout the text lending insight into Marryat’s own thoughts and life. But Newton himself offers little to hold the reader’s interest.

Peter Simple is regarded as one of Marryat’s strongest works, and while I’m not quite half-way through so far I’m very impressed. Most shocking to me, Marryat is keeping the fourth wall intact; which is a big change of pace from preceding novels The King’s Own and Newton Forster where he just non-stop pops in to chat with the reader and wail about how hard it is to write books, etc. I have experienced Marryat as a more mature and confident writer in Percival Keene, but it’s obvious that he did some serious reflection before Peter Simple hit the press in serialization.

Peter Simple is written in the first person from the hero’s perspective, and my initial impression can be summarized as, “What if Frank Mildmay was innocent and wholesome, but also dumb as a box of rocks.” Peter Simple (TV Tropes Meaningful Name) isn’t exactly autobiographical, but his story clearly draws from Marryat’s life and the book even has a Captain Thomas Cochrane expy with the amazing name of “Thomas Kirkwall Savage.”

Peter’s innocence lets him get away with things that more roguish Marryat heroes couldn’t accomplish, such as being humorously accosted by a prostitute and lending her his arm as he proudly parades her in front of Captain Savage. (”To my surprise, not only did he not return the salute, but he looked at me with a very stern countenance.”) It also allows for more things to be explained in detail to the reader, due to Peter’s ignorance, which is welcome when Marryat otherwise rarely condescends to explain naval society and vocabulary.
