in light of, ahem, recent teamwear reveals I wanted to ask: what is it with leather? like visually my brain doesn't really Get It but I'm intrigued, and honestly I've found myself wanting to get it for this season

ykw i actually find it really hard to explain the leather Thing! it’s very sensory-based for me and also very much something that was honed during my childhood as a Horse Girl. we used to get to clean the tack (saddles and bridles) as a special treat when i worked at my local stables (when i say special treat, usually the jobs were like. mucking out the stables and hefting bags of feed around lmao) and i remember just being very into the smooth shininess of clean leather and how supple it gets when you polish it, and i especially loved the combination of leather straps and metal hardware on a bridle. i also grew up in the ‘90s when the whole “boy bands wearing barely disguised fetishwear” trend was a thing lmao, it was planted early in me!

i think the appeal for me is a combination of the sensory aspects (the texture of quality leather, the shine of it, the smell of it even), the aesthetic of it (black leather in particular and the way that wearing it almost feels like armour) but especially the associations with it. kink associations, yes, but in a particular way - it’s associated with S&M, with a particular brand of masculinity, of ritualised power dynamics (see also: boot-blacking) in a way i just really respond to. there’s something quite austere about it, leather is tough and can be rigid or flexible. i think it’s more about the associations because i have some quality faux leather items (baby turns blue make great apple skin ‘leather’ harnesses which are almost indistinguishable from real leather!) that i love just as much.

my friend got me a copy of the incredible book leatherfolk for my birthday, which is about queerness and BDSM more generally but goes quite deeply into the connection leather has/had with these subcultures. it’s somewhat out of date now as it’s from the early ‘90s, but large swathes of it remain very relevant and it’s a fascinating read nonetheless, i recommend it! (i think you can read the ebook for free at that link, with an account)
