Concert halls are dark. They have no windows. They are designed so that we, the audience, can't see outside, can't sense the passing of time or be disturbed by any external stimuli. So we sit, often cramped and uncomfortable, wearing fancy outfits that weren't supposed to get creased. and for the duration of the concert we keep our natural bodily processes in check: we don't (daren't) cry, laugh, call out or mutter, and of course we don't move. Chances are each of us feels self-conscious, not to mention alone. Stuck on a seat in the dark, we may not know the people around us, in the shadowy surrounds, we may not even recognise our companions. Faces are obscures. Bodies are lifeless. we are trapped in the concert hall coffin. Yes, I know this account is grim. And I know, even as I write, that there are people who take pleasure in concert-going and wouldn't have their musical fix any other way. Yet I can't help thinking how strange it is that music - so alive, so effervescent - is cooped up in a place that is dead and ultimately detached from the world. And this is to say nothing of the audiences, with our controlled emotions and cool demeanour. Are we dead and detached too?

Stravinsky's score [Firebird]  may tell us less about real-life Russian styles than about music designed to appeal to Western notions of Russia, it's art, culture and folklore.
