i think my problem with this dw season arc accusing the audience of fanbrain for theorising about ruby is that it both feels deceitful and isn't actually that compelling from a character perspective. the season goes out of its way to build up supernatural mystery around ruby and even invokes susan more heavily than ever before in a way that is deliberately trying to get the audience to make those connections. and then it turns around and says you stupid idiot why would you ever try to connect these dots i have deliberately tried to get you to connect.
building up a mystery only for the character to be ordinary is an impossible girl arc redux only this time accusing the viewer of failing to see the humanity of the companion, whereas the impossible girl arc was turning that accusation on the doctor. 7b didn't really blame the audience for viewing clara as a puzzle and in fact several times spells out the fact that clara is perfectly ordinary before the big reveal to give the audience a chance to catch on. as 7b goes on, instead of laying the mystery on thicker, the audience just gets more and more affirmations that clara is a normal human being (rings of akhaten, journey to the centre of the tardis, hide). i found this approach compelling because it was rooted in character, focusing on the doctor's disconnection from humanity/the gendered dynamic of a man treating a woman as his manic pixie mystery to pull him out of grief. s14's meta approach of accusing the viewer feels both unfair, given it has deliberately led the viewer towards theorising, and personally less compelling to me because it wasn't tied into character in any way.
the thing about rey's parentage in tlj is that the reason rian johnson chose to go for that reveal was that it was the only answer that was interesting. none of the theories - rey is a skywalker, rey is a kenobi, and even the eventually canonical rey is a palpatine - were interesting or satisfying because they brought nothing compelling to the table for the story being told. the only satisfaction to be gained from those answers was a fanbrained "omg rey is important because she's related to that guy from the other movie." on top of that, rey desperately wants her parents to have been important, to give her life and her abandonment some kind of significance. so them being ordinary provided the most compelling trajectory for her character because it was the thing she least wanted to hear. it forced her to do the most introspection and growth, as well as tying into the film's themes about the capacity of ordinary people to be special. it wasn't just a choice made to "gotcha" the viewer, it was rooted in character.
i don't think ruby's mother being ordinary accomplishes the same thing. by invoking susan, s14 is engaging with the most egregious example of the doctor's streak of abandonment, which has potential to be very compelling in relation to ruby (and now also the doctor's) own abandonment issues. theories that ruby might be susan, or be somehow related to susan, or somehow related to the doctor, weren't just fanbrained "omg she's related to that guy i know from the classic series." they were theories genuinely rooted in character and the potential to explore both the doctor and ruby's issues with abandonment. and this is something the show willingly led fans towards by invoking susan so much in the first place. so for the show to turn around and act like they were shallow out of nowhere ideas when they were not shallow and were based on potential character conflicts the show itself deliberately invoked, feels misguided.
as well as that, ruby's mother being ordinary does not require that same growth from ruby as it did for rey because it is exactly what ruby wanted to hear. she never wanted her mother to be important, she just wanted to know who her mother was and have a connection with her. so finding out she was a normal woman who still loves her and wants to be a part of her life is everything she's ever wanted. it doesn't introduce interesting conflict for her the way rey's parents being ordinary did for her, because they were written as different characters with different hangups over their abandonment.
tl;dr i don't necessarily dislike ruby's mother being ordinary as an idea but compared to the things it was inspired by - 7b and star wars - it is not nearly as compelling in terms of how it relates to the characters or themes. and the meta angle, while conceptually interesting, doesn't quite work for me because it feels a little manipulative of the audience.
#blahs#dw#dw spoilers#like to be clear i'm not necessarily saying ruby's mother SHOULD have turned out to be susan#i'm saying that if it was always going to be an ordinary woman then rtd should've constructed a better arc around that#bc for the one he did write it's not that compelling of an answer. it doesn't really move anyone forward except maybe the doctor himself#bc the doctor is now sad that ruby has what he can never find#like yeah okay that's interesting... next season. and for the doctor. but not really for ruby!! and not for s14 as a whole!!#and like pulling the rug out of a mystery like this is something moffat also did a lot#like invoking the name of the doctor only to not reveal it or teasing the hybrid as a big alien villain only for it to be twelveclara#but the thing about those is that moffat never makes the answer that he rejects genuinely compelling#like he rejects learning the doctor's name bc there is nothing compelling about knowing it and he never tries to make you think there is#he rejects the hybrid as a warrior alien bc there's nothing compelling about that and he doesn't try to make you think there is#i feel subversive moffat mysteries are always leading you towards why the answer he gives you is the most compelling one#which i don't think s14 accomplishes. instead it's like haha! tricked you! your genuinely interesting theories are silly and dumb!#idk. i see the vision but i don't think it was handled with a deft hand so it ended up kind of a mess that didn't land imo

love waking up from a dream having been gifted with THE MOST PROFOUND KNOWLEDGE THAT I MUST WRITE DOWN AND SHARE WITH THE WORLD IMMEDIATELY only to properly wake up like 2 minutes later and being like "this is nonsense".
#i dreamt my friend from okinawa was teaching in the classroom underneath mine (apparently there was a classroom underneath mine)#and the kids from his classroom kept escaping and coming into mine via stairs i didn't even know existed#and he described them as 'indigo children' looking for 'the road of dreams'#and then he came to me afterwards - having turned into patrick stewart but retaining his hair - and he said:#'do you know the way to the road of dreams? first you must go up'#and i had a little tricycle/truck hybrid thing with an inflatable hamburger some wooden blocks and a beach ball stuck to the back#and i was like. this is it. this is the key. if i have these things then i can find the road of dreams#and i woke up like okay i must write this down i must remember this#and it took me between getting off my bed and turning on the air con to go 'wait no this is dream nonsense'#i did find out indigo children were actually like a pseudoscience thing in the 1970s/80s though so there you go#and the characteristics that describe indigo children are pretty much me haha#and then i kept reading and it was like 'a lot of so-described indigo children actually have adhd'#but parents prefered to believe their kid was gifted and destined to lead a religious revolution than to accept they had 'a disorder'#so that makes sense lmao

While I was at work I decided that Meggy won't be the only one to get a sibling in the Squid Memes AU.... because I'm having Minion (SMG4's trans girl half-spaghetti clone that got made waaaaay back in "Luigi Labyrinth") come back in "Mario's Challenge," since there were a lot of characters in that episode so it wouldn't be all that hard to slot her in, and then she's just gonna end up sticking around afterwards 'cause why not. So now SMG4 has a sister, apparently.
Also I'm giving her Sooper Stretchy Powers (yes the misspelling is deliberate) and marinara in place of blood because she's part spaghetti. Her stretching powers are actually what end up inspiring Sheldon to create the Zipcaster Special in this universe.
#i wish squid memes were real au#smg4 minion#it sometimes bothers me that there's a half-smg just wandering around and the lore's done Nothing with her#the reason it takes her that long to join the main cast is because she was spending a year or two figuring out how the world works#and dealing with the existential crisis of being both an imperfect copy of someone else and a freaky human/food hybrid#and attempting to lead a revolution to free her oppressed spaghetti brethren from the hungry masses (it Did Not go well)#minion: i'm not like Other girls. i have... Noodle Arms *does some sick-ass noodle arm dancin'*

Hey! I just read the hybrid AU hc's you wrote and I came up whit something...
What if IK does end up being taken by the angels to the Celestial realm? I honestly think at first she'd try to fit in but ultimately get sad that she's away from the devildom and the brothers. I keep thinking that she'd do anything to get kicked out and fall from the Celestial Realm just so she can be whit the brothers.
Could you maybe write some hcs of the brothers not only seeing her fall down from the sky through a window but also reacting to he being half demon now? (Only if you want!!)
I honestly think the brothers would get Vietnam flashbacks
actually, i reckon ik would skip the fitting in steps and immediately go for angelic delinquency - there's no way the celestial realm got her into custody without a fight, and in the first place she does NOT want to be here - she wants to be at home with her demon family
presumably the celestial realm got what they wanted by putting simeon and/or luke on the spot, either by threatening one of the others' safety or just by making a bunch of empty promises and assuring them that this is all ultimately better for ik's wellbeing... though luke'd more likely be convinced by the latter than simeon
the brothers are probably furious about all this, but diavolo can't let them charge up there to bring ik home themselves because 1. the celestial realm technically does have a genuine claim to ik's care, and 2. they can't risk starting another war. lucifer, while deeply unhappy about the situation, has to agree for the sake of peace and everyone else's safety
solomon spends a lot of time trying to negotiate, since ik's still half human and has been raised human her whole life. but the celestial realm's gotten suspiciously cagey about ik's whereabouts - so he insists on seeing her every time he visits, and every time she's gotten quieter
luke doesn't quite understand it at first - the celestial realm's so beautiful, and there's so many fun things to do! eventually though, he, like simeon, becomes fully (and painfully) aware that ik's miserable up here. also, is it just him, or is the high council being really shady about 'settling her in'?
an angel-human hybrid's existence is dangerous, especially one as friendly with demons as ik, so it'd be easier for the celestial realm (both in terms of politics, and the ongoing loyalty of the angels) if she was obedient. ik's having none of it though
it starts with talking back to the seraphs, then sneaking out and causing a ruckus when they're not looking. this escalates into mild vandalism, then straight up destruction of property (throwing things through windows, etc)
at first the seraphs just take it into stride, because it'd make it harder to make ik cooperate if they punished her, but it starts getting out of hand - a lot of valuable and very old things end up destroyed, and the other angels are starting to object to having her here in the first place
exile would be a last resort, because it's the last thing the council wants in this situation. potentially, ik goes to simeon and raphael conspire to make it happen - neither are particularly willing, but it's just about the only plan they have for letting ik go home
(the seraphs did say that ik would be allowed to come down to the devildom, but won't allow it until ik behaves and promises to stay that way - which she has no intention of doing)
the demons aren't informed about this because they'd almost certainly object - though diavolo has his suspicions, and he warns simeon against it, having seen first-hand what the fall did to the brothers. unfortunately, simeon chooses to listen to ik instead
maybe simeon sets fire to the grand palace, or raphael attacks an angel - in either situation, ik admits to the crime, and somehow they make it happen! down she goes!
barbatos sees something falling down and his heart drops like a fucking ROCK. he knew diavolo was suspicious, but he never thought ik would actually go through with it... but he supposes that kid's always been too reckless for her own good
he does attempt to somehow issue a warning to prevent the brothers from seeing this, but unfortunately they're all at the castle already (to discuss ik's situation, actually, which is ironic) and realise what's going on soon afterwards. asmo just starts screaming and he can't stop for a while
the fall is almost definitely too aggressive for this - it's like a meteor falling - but the winged demons still fly up to try and soften the impact, even though they all get pretty singed in the process. ik's not too badly wounded, though the same can't be said of her mental state
the brothers aren't sure whether to be happy she's at least back or to be SO pissed this even happened in the first place. out of all of them, lucifer probably has the worst reaction to it; he's feeling a molotov cocktail of grief and fury, and he's only just barely keeping it under control
belphie is so fucking angry that he thinks he finally knows what it must be like to be avatar of wrath, but then he sees satan's face and realises that even now, he has no idea how deep that rage runs. they both agree that their energy is much better expended on helping ik recover, though, so there's not much they can do about it
i guess in some ways, the brothers are happier with ik being half-demon than half-angel, and they're definitely glad that she's home, but... man. why do all the worst things keep happening to this poor kid?
#answering asks#anon asks#jtta aus#hybrid au#wow i wrote more than i intended to#was gonna bullet point this but as you can see i ended up not doing that#sorry this ended up being more stuff leading up to the fall than the actual aftermath!!#would ik have wings or a tail after falling? since it seems demons can only have one of the two#if she had a tail i think it'd be feathered... maybe like a parrot's#if she had wings they'd look like the 'wings' on flying fish#as for horns either they're so small that they just look like little triangles sticking from her hair#or they'd be like yanfei's downwards pointing antlers#on the upside once ik's recovered she can probably get up to some pretty fun demon hijinks!

End User Computing: How Organizations are Empowering Individuals to be More Productive
End User Computing
User computing refers to the use of information technologies by average computer users within an organization to asccomplish tasks and solve problems. As technologies have evolved, end users now have access to powersful tools that allow them to work more independently and productively. The Rise of End User Computing
The personal computer revolution of the 1980s marked a major shift toward user computing. As PCs became more affordable, organizations began distributing them to knowledge workers and other non-technical roles. This empowered individuals to do tasks like data entry, basic analysis, and documentation independently using programs like spreadsheets and word processors. No longer needing IT support for simple tasks freed up resources for more complex projects. Advancing Beyond Desktops
End User Computing as mobile technologies advanced in the 2000s, the definition of user computing expanded beyond traditional desktop PCs. Laptops, smartphones, and tablets allowed knowledge workers to access the tools and information they need from anywhere. Combined with cloud services, this enabled flexible, mobile workstyles. Rather than being tied to their desks, employees could work productively from home, while traveling, or at client sites. Many jobs that previously required workers to be on-site were transformed into virtual, remote positions. Democratization of Software Tools
At the same time, powerful yet easy-to-use software was being developed specifically for end users. Applications like Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Cloud, and Google's G Suite gave individuals sophisticated tools for tasks like data analysis, presentations, graphic design, and collaboration without needing deep technical expertise. This democratized capabilities that were previously only available to specialized roles. End users could now perform complex analyses that may have previously required database administrators or programmers. They could also create polished marketing materials or online training modules that may have required dedicated designers. Individual Productivity and Decision Making
Armed with these modern tools, end users can take on more responsibility and complete work independently. Knowledge workers no longer need to wait for centralized IT departments to perform simple tasks or for data they need to make decisions. They have real-time access to critical business information wherever they are. Professionals like sales representatives, product managers, and financial analysts can now gather insights, spot trends, and identify opportunities on their own using available data and analysis software. This empowers them to make quicker, more informed decisions without oversight or approvals. Improved Customer Service and Support
For roles involving direct client or customer interaction, user computing enables a high level of responsiveness. Sales representatives can access customer histories, process orders, or address concerns rapidly from remote locations using mobile devices and cloud services. Call center agents and customer support specialists have real-time access to knowledgebases, manuals, and ticket histories to resolve issues quickly. This type of just-in-time access to information improves customer satisfaction by reducing wait times and the need for transfers. It also allows knowledge workers in these roles to work remotely, expanding hours of availability. Informed Decision Making Across Functions
Beyond individual productivity, aggregating insights and analyses from across an organization provides benefits. As more knowledge workers have tools to pull and analyze data relevant to their roles, meaningful patterns can emerge. For example, marketing teams analyzing sales data may notice new product opportunities that research and development was not previously aware of. HR professionals analyzing anonymized employee surveys could spot future training needs or compensation issues. When decentralized individuals across functions have access to insights, it allows for more holistic, informed strategic planning and decision making at higher levels. Data Governance and Compliance Challenges
While empowering end users produces clear benefits, increased access to data can introduce governance and compliance risks that IT leaders must address. Key challenges include ensuring consistent data classification and security, compliance with Industry regulations around sensitive data, and preventing unauthorized external data sharing. Careful access controls and auditing policies are needed along with user training on responsible data utilization. Without proper controls, well-intentioned analyses by end users could accidentally expose the organization to security threats, privacy issues or regulatory fines if sensitive customer or financial information is mishandled. Security is also a concern as more company data resides on employee-owned devices beyond the organization's firewalls. Strict mobile device management policies and encryption are mandatory, along with measures to remotely wipe corporate data if devices are lost or stolen. Overreliance on shadow IT systems also poses integration, support, and licence compliance issues that CIOs must continuously assess. While the productivity benefits of end user access are undeniable, maintaining appropriate governance is critical to avoid legal and reputational risks down the line. The Future of User computing
As organizations become increasingly data-driven, the role of end users in leveraging available data for decision making and innovation will only continue growing in importance. Many predict most knowledge roles will be transformed under a model of self-service business intelligence where individuals have tools and autonomy to continuously extract value from company information assets.
Those who empower their end users with modern technologies and data access while maintaining strong governance will gain a significant competitive advantage through faster insights, more agility, and continuous optimization at all levels of the business. The coming years will see how far organizations are willing to decentralize their decision making and truly embrace an "everyone a data scientist" philosophy of end user empowerment.
