🎨Claude Monet, Rue Montorgueil, Paris, Festival of 30 June 1878 #Bastille Day or Fête nationale is a day of nationwide celebration for the people of France commemorating the anniversary of the Storming of the Bastille on 14 July 1789. The #French Revolution was a period of social and political upheaval in France and its colonies beginning in 1789 and ending in 1799. The #Revolution overthrew the monarchy. It was spurred on by the American revolution which enlightened France that principles of natural #humanrights and #equality for all could succeed against an authoritarian regime. 231 years ago, an angry and aggressive mob attacked the Bastille - a fortress-like state prison in #Paris after Jacques Necker, the Finance Minister of Louis XVI, who was sympathetic to the Third Estate, was dismissed by the king on 11 July 1789.   90% of #France's population were known as "The Third Estate" or people who were not members of the elite. They were wage-laborers who lived in the urban areas and peasants in the rural areas.  People were unhappy with regressive taxes - tax rates decrease as the amount subject to taxation increases. The Bastille not only held ammunition and gunpowder but also political prisoners that could not be appealed and were imprisoned without reason. Bastille was the symbol of the monarchy's dictatorial rule.  The angry crowd was eventually joined by the Gardes Françaises (French Guards). After the storming of the Bastille, in the evening of 4 August, feudalism was abolished.  On 26 August, the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen was established.
