Injuries, Job Security, and How MotoGP and Indycar Differ...Or Don't.
In the last two years, two racers I support have been seriously injured. One was Enea Bastianini, rider of the #23 Ducati in MotoGP, and the other was David Malukas, who never actually got to drive the #6 NTT Data Arrow McLaren-Chevrolet Indycar.
So, just to go over what happened to them: Enea Bastianini was injured in the opening sprint race of the 2023 MotoGP season, the Portuguese GP at Portimao. Luca Marini went up his inside into turn five (Torre VIP), lost it, and his bike slid into Enea's bike. Enea broke his collarbone in this crash, wound up missing the opening five races, came back, injured himself again at Catalunya, and missed another three races.
Enea would return for the Indonesian Grand Prix and would then win the Malaysian Grand Prix towards the end of the season. That win, combined with Jorge Martin on the Pramac Ducati failing to beat Francesco Bagnaia for the championship, secured Enea's seat for 2024.
So, while Enea was enjoying a secure offseason, David Malukas was preparing for his switch from Dale Coyne Racing to a frontrunning team in the form of Arrow McLaren...except, he never actually made his debut for the team.
David Malukas was mountain biking in California, riding an easy trail, when, trying to slow himself, pulled the front brake too hard, went up and over the handlebars, and landed on his hands. He would break his left wrist and it was announced he would miss St. Pete and probably Thermal.
St. Pete and probably Thermal soon became St. Pete and definitely Thermal, missing those two races. Callum Ilott would fill in.
Malukas missed Long Beach next, with Theo Pourchaire in the car now.
Then Theo Pourchaire raced Long Beach as well.
Around this time, various rumors started flying about Malukas getting replaced. This only grew as Nathan Brown reported that Malukas had traveled to Panama in order to receive stem cell shots to speed up his recovery, and only then did he get the pins in his wrist removed.
Then, after Barber - the fourth race of the season, Malukas blacked out his twitter page. I was sat in a discord debating what exactly this meant with some other Indycar fans, with news picking up that he had been dropped. With the story pretty much out there, Arrow McLaren made the announcement early in the morning, David Malukas had been released after failing to meet his contractual obligations.
By now, it's been announced that Ilott will do the Indy 500, and then Theo Pourchaire will fill out the rest of the season in the #6. The Malukas at McLaren story ended before it could even begin.
Meanwhile, in MotoGPland, Enea Bastianini continued with the factory Ducati team. However, with Jorge Martin now building up an annoyingly large championship lead and Marc Marquez on the Ducati stealing all the attention, the whole world seems to think it's between the two of them to get the Ducati factory seat for 2025.
For the record, Enea is tied on points with Marquez, just two behind his teammate, and spent this weekend's race - the French Grand Prix at the Le Mans Bugatti Circuit - starting tenth, getting a penalty, recovering to fourth, setting fastest lap, and finishing just 2.2 seconds off the lead.
Enea is an immense talent, he's the rider I chose to support when I decided to become a MotoGP fan ahead of the 2023 season, and it's so rotten to see his career falling apart because of factors outside of his control.
As for Malukas, he's a young, popular kid and has proven so talented on the ovals in a Dale Coyne Racing car. I was so eager to see what he could do with an Arrow McLaren, particularly at tracks like Iowa, Gateway, and Nashville which seemed like they'd suit him. Now, we're not going to get the chance, and it's unclear where he might land if he were to try and return to Indycar.
So, in theory, MotoGP gives more time to injured racers, but no matter what series you're in, motorsports can be a cutthroat business. Bastianini and Malukas certainly aren't the first racers to lose top rides after an injury, and they certainly won't be the last. It's not exactly an industry known for job security.
If I could manifest a happy resolution to both, I'd have Enea Bastianini go to factory Aprilia to join Maverick VInales, while David Malukas could join Meyer Shank Racing (perhaps with Tom Blomqvist returning to IMSA with the same team) to reinforce their oval program the same way Felix Rosenqvist has revitalized that team on the road and street circuits.
For now though, we wait to see what happens to them.
To end on a happier note, Brad Keselowski won the Darlington Goodyear 400 NASCAR race last night running a throwback scheme in honor of the TOM's Castrol Supra. That is an awesome motorsports word randomizer and the fact that it's real is why NASCAR is really cool in 2024.
One day I'll write a blogpost where talking about current NASCAR is actually the point instead of just spending the final paragraph gushing about last weekend's cool race.

💥 Love Triangle Chronicles Continue: Y/N Y/L/N Kisses Carlos Sainz After F1 Miami GP, but Y/L/N's Twitter Comment Leaves Fans Bewildered! 💔😘
😱 The rollercoaster of emotions continues as conflicting signals bewilder fans, while Pierre Gasly's defense adds a new twist to the love saga! 💔🤔
In a stunning turn of events after the F1 Miami Grand Prix, the love triangle involving MotoGP star Y/N Y/L/N, Charles Leclerc, and Carlos Sainz has taken yet another dramatic twist, leaving fans utterly bewildered. After an exhilarating race where Leclerc finished in P7 and Sainz secured P5, a captivating picture emerged, capturing Y/L/N congratulating Sainz with a tender kiss on the cheek, fueling the belief that they are more than just friends. However, Y/L/N's recent comment on Twitter has cast a cloud of confusion over the entire affair, leading fans to question the true nature of her relationships. 💔😘🤔
The image, capturing the intimate moment between Y/L/N and Sainz, sent shockwaves through the racing community, with fans leaning towards Team Sainz as the preferred romantic interest for Y/L/N. Hearts shattered and emotions ran high as fans passionately declared their allegiance to their chosen driver in the hopes of capturing Y/L/N's heart. 💔💑🔥
However, just as fans were beginning to celebrate the apparent confirmation of the Y/L/N-Sainz romance, a surprising tweet from Y/L/N herself threw everything into disarray. In her comment, she emphatically stated that she and Sainz are merely friends, leaving followers in a state of confusion and raising questions about the true nature of the kiss shared after the race. 🤔💔
Adding another layer of intrigue to the already complex love saga, Charles Leclerc's best friend and fellow F1 driver, Pierre Gasly, stepped forward to defend his companion, asserting that Sainz and Y/L/N are indeed just friends. Gasly's intervention only served to further complicate matters, leaving fans wondering if he is trying to protect his best friend's interests or if there is more to the story than meets the eye. 🕵️♀️🔍
With conflicting signals and a web of emotions entangling the racing world, fans are left with more questions than answers. Will the true nature of Y/L/N's romantic connections ever be unveiled, or will this love triangle continue to confound and captivate us all? Stay tuned as the high-octane drama continues to unfold both on and off the track! 🏁🌟

🌟 Leclerc's Surprise Appearance at MotoGP Le Mans: Charles Supports Y/L/N as She Secures P3 in Qualifying! 💥🏍️ ☑️
😱 Love triangle takes a backseat as attention turns to an unexpected MotoGP rendezvous and Y/L/N's impressive performance! 🤩
In a stunning twist to the ongoing love triangle saga, F1 star Charles Leclerc was spotted at the MotoGP Le Mans in France, putting the focus momentarily on the racetrack rather than the tangled web of relationships. The Monagesque driver surprised fans as he appeared to support his rumored love interest, Y/N Y/L/N, who delivered an impressive performance by securing P3 in the qualifying session. 💥🏍️🇫🇷
While rumors of a romance between Y/L/N and Leclerc have been circulating, the attention temporarily shifted to their professional endeavors as Y/L/N's outstanding achievement took center stage. Fans were captivated by her prowess on the track, leaving the love debate momentarily on hold. The electrifying atmosphere at Le Mans was charged with excitement as Y/L/N showcased her skills, leaving spectators in awe. 🏆🌟
As the dust settled from the thrilling qualifying session, attention inevitably returned to the ongoing love saga. Fans, who had been leaning towards Team Sainz after Y/L/N's affectionate gesture at the F1 Miami GP, were left pondering the true nature of her connections once again. Y/L/N's recent comment on Twitter stating that she and Sainz are just friends added another layer of confusion, fueling speculation and raising questions about her interactions with Leclerc. 😘💔🤔
Adding to the intrigue, Charles Leclerc's best friend, Pierre Gasly, previously defended Sainz and Y/L/N's friendship, leading fans to wonder if his presence at the MotoGP race was a subtle show of support for Y/L/N's racing achievements rather than a romantic gesture. The love triangle saga continues to twist and turn, captivating fans with every unexpected development. 💔🔥🔄
As the racing world eagerly awaits the next chapter in this enthralling narrative, the focus now shifts back to the MotoGP Le Mans race itself. Will Y/L/N's outstanding performance on the track translate into a victorious finish, further intensifying the love triangle storyline? Buckle up, racing enthusiasts, for the journey is far from over, and the final lap promises to be the most exhilarating yet! 🏁🌟

I’ve touched on my experience in Le Mans this season (2024) and I have free time on my hands so I thought I could talk about my experience there in 2023.
CONTEXT
— I semi-impulsively bought the ticket at the end of January (2023) when I was on the website of the GP and saw that they had some GS seats left. I had a Zarco GS seat so I was right in front of the Raccordement and could see the straight before the finish line (I paid 159€ for it).
— At this point, I had only started getting into MotoGP a couple months prior and the only GP I had watched live was Valencia 2022. Le Mans was only a one-hour train ride away from where I lived and finding an okay-priced bedroom on AirBnB was a successful mission so I just thought this is low preparation, I’ll have fun, let’s go.
— I went alone and didn’t know anyone there. More under the cut.
OVERALL
— My only motorsport race weekend experience before that was GA in Monza 2022, you might have heard about how chaotic that was. Le Mans was such a relief in comparison.
— I’ve touched on it in my 2024 debrief but the Bugatti circuit has an entrance that is 150 meters away from the terminus of one of the tramway lines. Getting there from my AirBnB literally took 20 minutes door to door.
— I arrived at the doors around 8:30 on Friday, 7 on Saturday and 8:30 on Sunday. I didn’t have to queue at all at the gate on the first two days. I might have queued like 5 minutes on Sunday (reminder : Le Mans beat the previous attendance record that weekend with 278k people over 3 days).
— I bought at the circuit headphones that could do radio and connect to the speakers of the circuit. It cost 60 euros but it was so worth it (for the ears protection + the radio aspect of thing). If you wanna go the cheapest route, definitely have some sort of ear protection with you (ear plugs work as well).
FRIDAY
— Since I arrived early, there weren’t a lot of people at the fanzone. I was able to go see some bikes and then gain a free Red Bull after doing the reflexes game with the lights you have to tap with your hands.
— I went to my GS to see P1 and then came back to the fanzone around noon. I saw that some people were already waiting in front of the stage so I went to wait with them. I eventually ended up talking with some of the people there, especially the girls who asked about my Charles Stint Apparel sweatshirt.
— I think we started having people on stage at like 2pm? There was a DJ and some people I don’t remember intervening. Well, I do remember Hervé Poncharal and the CIP boys being there (can you believe I saw Mig from up close before realizing how insanely cool he was? I’m still terribly sad about that).
— Eventually, after P2 was done, it was time for the MotoGP riders to get there. First we had Rinsy & Taka, Pecco & Enea, then Johann & Jorge, Fabio & Franky and finally Marc & Joan.
— Essentially they all stayed about 15 minutes on stage, the guy managing the stage asked them questions and then the public could ask questions as well. On their way down from the stage they all stopped for autographs and selfies. I was second row/barely touching the barrier so I only took photos of them and had help from my new friends to get my Michelin cap signed by a bunch of them.
— I miraculously got to have the mic when Honda was there (only public question they took, they were only on stage for about 6 minutes because things got out of schedule) and I got to ask Marc a question. I did not ask anyone to film (yes I have regrets, ‘o my heart wasn’t doing well then) but essentially I asked him how he was feeling coming back and what he liked about Le Mans considering he’d won there 4 times already in the past. He paused me at the beginning of my question so he could find me in the public and look at me while I was asking the question, sweetest thing (bar is on the floor, I do not care, this is Marc).
— After that, we got some Moto2 pairs on stage as well : KTM Ajo (Pedro & Albert Arenas), GasGas (Jake & Izan) & Speed Up (Alonso & Fermin).
— During the afternoon people handed over a bunch of things to the first rows in the public and that’s how I got a signed by Marc Honda cap and a bracelet that would grant me access to the Hero Walk on Saturday morning.
— Overall an insane afternoon. Super tiring and not always easy (people were pushing a lot at some points and I am small™️) but definitely worth it.
SATURDAY
— They said the Hero Walk would be at 9 but I arrived at 7 because I didn’t know how many people would be there and I definitely wanted a front row for that. Things got kind of hectic when they put the final barriers but I did get said front row against the barriers.
— Almost all the riders came by (it lasted a little under an hour, almost until the beginning of FP). The public sang a Marseillaise for Fabio (as it did the day before during the fanzone event).
— I got to have my cap signed by a bunch of guys and also take selfies with a couple of them. I had my photo with Bezz as a lockscreen for a good while after the event (including the Sunday when he won) and I still have the photo with Alex as my insta pfp. Some of the guys you couldn’t talk to at all because too many people were calling for their attention (ex: Marc, Fabio…) but I got to congratulate Alex & Brad on their previous results and they were both super nice. Super nice experience that I still think about fondly.
— I went to my GS for quali and the sprint. I came by the fanzone for the second half of the MotoGP riders events. I was too far to ask for the mic again but I watched them all and I do have a small video of Tony speaking in French.
— At night, from about 7:30 to 9pm, they had a Mechanical Show on the straight with a lot of people doing stunts on motorbikes. Fabio also came by (Tom, Mathilde, Tony & Jake were there as well). He spoke some words and threw his helmet into the public. The whole thing was pretty cool.
— I know they had concerts on Fri & Sat at the fanzone but I didn’t stay for any so I won’t be able to talk about them.
SUNDAY
— Truthfully, I don’t think I have much to say about Sunday. I think Sundays will forever by my least favorite day at the race track.
— Essentially, I got there, waited in line nearly half an hour to buy a Red Bull can for 5 euros, watched warm up, watched the parade (that I still think is a super boring events for fans) and then the races.
— I was a little apprehensive about getting back to the train station but honestly things were super well organized with trams, it was quite nice.

2023 Revival to host first ever all-synthetic fuel race at Goodwood as full schedule confirmed
In what is already a seminal year for motorsport at Goodwood as we celebrate 75 years of the Motor Circuit, 30 years of the Festival of Speed and 25 years of the Revival, we are delighted to announce that this year’s Revival will host an all-synthetic fuel race - the first of its kind. Taking place over the weekend, the Fordwater Trophy will see a grid of 30 pre-66 Porsche 911s take to the historic Goodwood Motor Circuit - for the first ever all-synthetic fuel race in its 75-year history. The Revival race list is completed by a further 14 races for everything from pre-war Grand Prix cars to sportscars of the early 1960s; the races join the previously-announced Carroll Shelby Centenary and 75 years of Lotus celebrations. Fordwater Trophy - Porsche 911s Continuing our celebrations for the 60th anniversary of the legendary Porsche 911 from the 80th Members’ Meeting, Revival will see a race for 30 of the racing classics. New for this year, each car will run wholly on synthetic fuel as we see a spectacular on-track battle for the trophy. Rudge Whitworth Cup - Celebrating the centenary of Le Mans 24 Hours New for 2023, the Rudge Whitworth Cup will pay homage to the Le Mans 24 Hours, which celebrates its centenary in 2023. With a grid full of Bentleys, Alfa Romeos, Bugattis and more from the world’s greatest test of endurance, this two-driver race will feature sportscars from the very first years of Le Mans. Freddie March Memorial Trophy - The Goodwood Nine Hour Icons! The Freddie March Memorial Trophy has been a mainstay of the Goodwood Revival for many years with its mixture of stunning sports cars from the days of the Goodwood Nine Hours. As 2023 marks the 70th anniversary of the 1953 event, the Freddie March Memorial Trophy will run as our two-driver sunset race on Friday evening. Expect to see the likes of the mighty Jaguar C-Type, Aston Martin DB3S, Jaguar XK120, Frazer Nash and Austin Healey go head-to-head. Goodwood Trophy - Grand Prix and Voiturette cars from the 30s and 40s A firm-favourite amongst spectators, the Goodwood Trophy will host an impressive collection of Grand Prix and Voiturette cars from the 1930s and 40s. The Revival’s oldest race will again see the cars that raced at Goodwood when the Circuit first opened do battle on the track. Expect to see cars from ERA, Maserati, Alta and many more.
Barry Sheene Memorial Trophy - Grand Prix motorcycles from the 1960s Probably the most nail biting of all the races at Revival, the Barry Sheene Memorial Trophy will host a battle of 1960s Grand Prix motorcycles. Expect riding legends from the world of British Superbikes, MotoGP and the Isle of Man TT to race in this pair of two-rider tussles. St Mary's Trophy - Saloon 1950s cars Bringing the touring car battle to the Revival, the St Mary’s Trophy will host everything from Austin A40s to Jaguar MkIs and Alfa Romeo Giuliettas. Similar to the Barry Sheene Memorial Trophy, the St. Mary’s Trophy switches decade each year, meaning that in 2023 it will be a collection of 1950s saloon cars taking the track by storm. Glover Trophy - 1.5-litre Grand Prix cars from 1961-1965 The Revival’s most up-to-date Formula 1 race must be one of the most anticipated tests of the historic motorsport season. Today, the Glover Trophy celebrates legendary racers including Jackie Stewart, Jim Clark and Graham Hill, with the kinds of cars they raced at the time: Lotus 25, BRM P261, Ferrari 1512. Lavant Cup - Ferrari GTs of 1960-1966 Paying homage to 60 years since Graham Hill won the RAC TT at Goodwood behind the wheel of a Ferrari 250 GTO, the Lavant Cup will welcome an entire grid of 1960s Ferrari GTs to the 2023 race schedule. Expect eye-wateringly beautiful GTOs to go up against the likes of 250 SWBs and 250 LMs in what may very well be the last time some of these cars race competitively. Chichester Cup - Formula Junior cars from 1960-1963 These tiny, yet agile racing machines will put on a magnificent battle as the likes of Lotus and Cooper go head to head. Formula Junior cars play an important part in motorsport history - the cars on track will mimic those driven by the racing stars of the 1960s and 1970s. Richmond & Gordon Trophies - 2.5-litre Grand Prix cars from 1952-1960 A race from the era that changed Formula 1 forever and the larger-engined Grand Prix cars of the later 1950s. This was the period where front-engined and rear-engined cars shared a grid, as Cooper’s backward innovation began to change the face of single-seater racing forever. The Richmond & Gordon Trophies will feature both front and rear-engined Formula 1 cars as they battle much like they did back in the 20th century. RAC TT Celebration - closed-cockpit GT and prototype cars from 1960 to 1964 Celebrating the period where flagship RAC TT racing was held at Goodwood, the RAC TT Celebration is at the very centre of historic motorsport for Goodwood. Heading into battle will be lightweight Jaguar E-Types, Cobras, Corvette Sting Rays, Porsche 904s, and more alongside a host of VIP stars. Whitsun Trophy - Sports-prototypes from 1960-1966 The fastest race of the Goodwood Revival weekend returns again with a mixture of Can-Am cars, Ford GT40s and other big-engined racers from the end of Goodwood’s active period. Together they look - and sound - incredible as they dice on the sweeping confines of the Goodwood Motor Circuit. Sussex Trophy - World Championship sports cars from 1955-1960 Filled with the likes of the beautiful Ferrari 246S Dino, Lister Knobblys and Lotus 15s, the Sussex Trophy never fails to entertain, with recent races going right down to the drag out of the Chicane to decide the winner. As the sun begins to set on the Revival’s weekend these beauties of sports car racing’s early heyday will keep everyone from leaving early heyday will keep everyone from leaving early, making it the perfect curtain closer on a brilliant three days of motorsport. Further announcements about the Goodwood Revival will be made in the coming months.
Read the full article
