*MAJOR ENDING SPOILERS* Post-game thoughts on Layton’s Mystery Journey

I just completed the game, and wow! I wasn’t very impressed with the game at first, but I thought the final case was really great and well-executed. The game is called ‘Katrielle and the Millionaires’ Conspiracy’, but the ‘Millionaires’ Conspiracy’ part only relates to the final case.

The second-last case was not bad, too, and I like how things finally took a more serious and darker turn, rather than just being all about solving lighthearted mysteries, with an actual death and the closest thing to an actual villain in the game. I thought that the identity of the real culprit was too obvious, though. I already expected that it would be Inspector Britannias himself, but not the part about how he wasn’t actually the murderer.

The final case was really great, but I would’ve preferred if the entire game actually centred around the ‘Millionaires’ Conspiracy’, rather than just being one mini case of its own. It would’ve been cool if the game had been like Unwound Future or Miracle Mask, where mysterious things have been happening around the town, and the protagonist has to find the identity of the person behind all of it. The reveal wasn’t as obvious as the other cases of course, but once I got to the final room in the game, the boy’s room, I remembered that Ernest wasn’t with Katrielle at that point, so I immediately figured that it must have been Ernest who had been behind all of it.

I was glad that I was right about it, and the fact that Ernest was the mastermind behind everything actually made me like him more, as it gave him some character depth, rather than just being some silly and shallow character who is just there to pursue Katrielle. The idea of a vengeful Ernest bent on revenge is a nice break from his usual self, and it makes him feel more like a three-dimensional character, with a different side to him. Meanwhile, I still find Katrielle very two-dimensional with not much character development. Also, I thought Ernest looked really cute in the flashbacks. He reminds me of the young Clive Dove. It’s kind of like Azran Legacy all over again, with the assistant being the villain/on the side of the villain.

Somehow, I feel that the ending would’ve been more impactful if Ernest was actually arrested, but I guess the developers can’t allow that to happen, since they need him for the sequels. They were able to do away with Emmy in Azran Legacy, since they needed to explain her absence in the original trilogy, but I guess they can’t get rid of Ernest in the very first game he appears in. The fact that everyone forgives Ernest and then everything goes back to normal once again at Katrielle’s office just sorts of feels like... the entire final chapter has be nullified?

The game still doesn’t explain some things though. How did Ernest set up the ‘Lord Adamas’ voice in the mansion, and if it was pre-recorded, how was the voice able to respond to Katrielle’s questions? Besides, why did Ernest send a letter to Katrielle, inviting ‘Professor Layton’ to the party, knowing that he is not there?
