Since Christmas has passed, I can finally post this piece I didn’t the other day. This piece of Jareth.... David Bowie.... The Fool “It doesn’t look that far…” “It’s further than you think, and time is short.”

For YEARS I have been telling myself I will make a tarot deck based on The Labyrinth, and finally, thanks to the DIY Tarot Challenge I’m doing it. It’s one of my favorite movies, so I’m super familiar with everything in it and and have looked and looked again at the symbolism within the movie and made my own headcanons. I have actually, previously, decided what character/scene will be what cards, but already I’ve strayed from that because more time looking at the movie has revealed better pairings! For The Fool, I chose the scenes where Sarah is in Jareth’s kingdom but before she enters the Labyrinth. It is the beginning of her adventure, when she is sure and confident. The castle looms ahead, and that is where her eyes are. She sees her goal, the castle (”Is that the castle beyond the goblin city?”), and doesn’t pay much mind to the actual Labyrinth. She tells Jareth that it “doesn’t look that far,” and indeed it isn’t, if you forget to consider all the turns and twists and backtracking that a maze puts you through. The potential and eagerness to begin is there, but there is a risk of forgetting to calculate in the delays. Also present in this card are the fairies she encounters while meeting Hoggle as he sprays them with toxin. She declares Hoggle a monster and picks up the poisoned fairy, only to have it unexpectedly bite her. She tells Hoggle she thought fairies “did nice things, like granting wishes.” “Shows how much you know,” is Hoggle’s response. Sarah knows nothing about this world she has entered and this path she has started, and coming in with past judgments and false-confidence results in injury.

A Goblin Queen verse. Like, not as Jareth's bride, but as an independent Goblin Queen of the Labyrinth. What do you think?

There was a slight breeze over the land as Sarah gazed out over the horizon. Things were quite, at least as quite as it could be. A lot had changed since that day so long ago, the first day she found herself in the laybrinth…

She had defeated Jareth and got her brother back, but when she was sent back her world nothing felt the same. There was no appeal. She felt as though she had nothing there. She couldn’t stay there. That was when I wish popped into her head…

”I wish…I wish I could live the Underground..”

Well she got her wish. Either someone else had been listening or Jareth still cared enough she grant her wish. She was in the Underground but there was more to it to that. There was always a twist to wishes. 

After making the wish, she found herself sitting in what looked like a giant palace. Where was she? Who did she get here? She stood up to look around when something caught the corner of her eye. A mirror with a strange person in it. She was beautiful! Her hair was pulled back from her face and up in a gorgeous mess of dark curls. As for her clothing. It was the most elegant of dresses she had ever seen. Gems, lace, the perfect amount of ruffles and the color was a rich mature silver. It took a movement of her arms and head for her to realize the person in the mirror was her. She looked amazing. It was everything had always wanted and more. 

The only reason why she knew she was in the Underground was because she discovered goblins running around but Jareth was no where in sight. When she looked outside, It looked exactly like the area around Jareth’s labyrinth but for as far as she could see there was no labyrinth. It was like her own little paradise and she was the queen. The only thing left was to figure out what to do with this new power.
