THE 13 BOOKS I READ IN 2023 IN ORDER FROM BEST TO WORST + THE PROTAGONIST'S SUPERLATIVE. PART 1.

NOTE: this ranking is entirely based on how much i enjoyed the thing and not necessarily on anything quantifiable or concrete. except for 1 and 12 those are just i think empirically true. also, this got very very hard between 2-8 and i enjoyed everything above 10 like, immensely. that said:

1. The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle. fucking gorgeous book. the writing was incredible, it made me feel like i needed to write right now right now right now or i was going to die and also why would i ever write again when i didn't write this. made me REEL several times and need to put it down and process it. i need to read it again and again. so much in there about the structure of story and fairytales and roles within a story and just. augh. man. i have at least a thousand words worth of highlights of quotes that make me completely insane. i want to write a dissertation on the interactions of amalthea and lír.

Protagonist: Amalthea/The Unicorn. Best Gender Moments And Unmatched Aro Vibes.

2. Blackcurrant Fool by Victoria Goddard. someone designed these books in a lab just to kill specifically me. i'm so thrilled i'm like, mad about it. this is book four in the series and included some MASSIVELY fun payoffs for some background references and foreshadowing that had been building for a while. some of my favourite tropes on this here earth are contained in this book and they make me insane in their execution. beloved. i kept having to put my face in my hands and shriek. like. literally. i liveblogged the last like ~30% of the book to several people. in detail.

Protagonist: Jemis Greenwing. Most Likely To Respond To A Given Situation With Both The Most Sincerely Heartfelt And Most Dramatic Option Possible And Then Insist That This Was The Obvious And Logical Thing To Do.

3. Bee Sting Cake by Victoria Goddard. some really excellent introductions to characters and concepts in here. did a good job as the second book in the series to continue keeping things interesting while maintaining and expanding on what was good about the first one, introducing new elements and making them play well with the established dynamics and situation. some really fun exploration of 'what if your two favourite people met each other and how would that go'. some delightful stuff about bees also which gets me in my feelings and the pov character has a good cry a couple times which he damn well deserves at this point.

Protagonist: (since there are two, i'm alternating for this series' superlatives) Peregrine Dart. Best At Being Totally And Completely Fine (Lying).

4. Stargazy Pie by Victoria Goddard. YES. I LIKED THESE BOOKS A LOT OKAY. THREE OF THEM IN A ROW. WHAT OF IT. very fun introduction to a series, it was a great first book. it delivered its worldbuilding in my favourite way for a fantasy series to do so, which is to just sort of drop me right in and explain as we go in a naturalistic kind of way. it meant i had to accept i just didn't know what was going on several times but that was fine. excellent combo of silly and serious and the characters are just. so charming and i'm so so fond of them. also i love a really stuffy strict distant society. bc then i'm like OHO TIME TO BREAK THESE RULES!!!

Protagonist: Jemis Greenwing. Most Likely To Have Everything Happen To Him So Much And All At Once.

5. By Force Alone by Lavie Tidhar. this book would probably have been ranked higher if it weren't for all the Someone's Got Their Dick Out. which is fine, go for it, but it felt like all the like. someone is getting their guts stabbed out and someone else is fuckin every other page is mostly a thematic thing that is supposed to drive home how gritty and grimy the narrative is. which y'know. not my bag. i like a gritty and grimy narrative but dude we know. that said it was extremely fun except for that, and i liked the way the characters were described a lot. they were not good people and it was deliberate and compelling. it was a lot to process all at once and i wish i'd slowed down with it - the last fourth of the book particularly hit me like a train. special shoutout to everything this book did with pelinore and the questing beast.

Protagonist: Arthur Pendragon. Most Doomed By The Narrative.

it turned out to be 1.1k words and theres no real warnings except that there's a fight/argument between reader and kanda and he had a ..... special .. way of helping u emotionally. we love a strange little man!!!! ilysm!! i hope you enjoy and I APOLOGIZE AGGRESSIVELY FOR THE WAIT, i hope this is worth it !! 🫡🧡🧡🥰

”You can’t be serious.”

You’re seething with anger, warmth heating your cheeks and tears lining your lash line from the overwhelmingly growing frustration building up in you.

Kanda doesn’t spare you a glance from the couch where he takes a sip of his tea. You want to rip the cup from his hands and hurl it towards the wall. He knows that’s what you want to do – he wants you to try.

Calmly, he puts down the cup, with the little finger hitting the table first so it makes no sound as he was taught by Edgar.

“I am.” He answers cooly, leveling your stance with a glance in your direction. Your hands are clenched at your sides.

You’ve been holding in your anger for the past week, ever since getting fired from your job. No emotional reaction, no comments; Kanda hates when you hold it all in.

He knows the road paved to your emotions can be walled up though, so telling you directly to react will simply make you stubborn; make a point out of being just fine.

“That doesn’t mean you have the right to go and actively piss me off for a week straight!”

You’re yelling. Good. Kanda knows it’s about to hit. He’ll take most hits if it helps you, doesn’t even consider them hits, really. He prepares for more yelling, for punching a wall or the couch but what you end up doing is tremendously worse.

You turn around and walk to your shared bedroom. You don’t stomp, you don’t slam the door shut.

Kanda sits wide-eyed on the couch, confused. This isn’t like you; this is a reaction out of his scope of experience with you. Shit.

He fucked up.

Logically, Kanda knows this wasn’t the best route to take, that he sounds like what Lavi would call “red flag-ish”, but he prides himself in successfully getting to know you and your needs over the years you’ve been a couple. If he simply forces you, you will go the other way, refuse to mold into what people want – even if it is what you need.

Some emotions come for you, easier than they do for Kanda, but others do not. Kanda has through trial and error taught himself how to navigate what can often be considered a whirlpool of your emotions. But he’s gone left where he should’ve gone right somewhere the past six days. He’s not entirely sure where.

Kanda doesn’t like being reminded or becoming aware of his shortcomings so the anger he wanted you to feel just a few short moments ago, is suddenly bubbling up inside him for being too emotionally stunted to figure this out on his own. He refuses to call for help. Lavi and Allen would be of absolutely zero help – Lenalee and Alma on the other hand would kindly navigate the situation with him, however, the chance that either of the two are hanging with the two aforementioned idiots is way too high for him to risk it.

All there is left is to simply bite the bullet.

He gets up from the couch and stretches his back, feeling several joints pop into place. He doesn’t remember being this tense before he relaxed the muscles actively.

He won’t admit it to anyone, but he’s tiptoeing down the hallway, dreading the moment he reaches the door. He likes you the best when you’re at your brightest and bubbliest but he likes it the worst when you’re closed up – especially if it’s his fault.

With three concise raps, he announces his presence by the door. There’s no sound from the other side, so with furrowed brows he knocks again.

He’s rewarded with complete fuck all.

With a scowl he opens the door – the least you could do was answer him. He finds you wrapped up on your side of the bed, with your back turned towards him. He knows you’re not asleep; your routine is different than this plus it’s only been a few minutes.

He clicks his tongue as he rounds the bed to get to your side. Further proof that you’re not actually asleep is the way your face is scrunched up almost dramatically, to signal that you’re both angry and pretending. He shakes his head and pushes at your hips unceremoniously to make room for himself to sit on the edge. You let him without any complaints.

He sits there for a moment, silence falling heavy over the both of you. You’re clearly trying to control your breathing as best as you’re able, making it visible how performative it is. Kanda holds back from rolling his eyes.

“Stop acting like a child.”

You huff out a sound before pulling your duvet over your face – or you try to, but Kanda’s weight is stopping it by your chin. Maybe not the best way to start his apology, he notes.

“Get it together.”

You let out an imitation growl before you trash around to turn your back to him. He grabs your shoulder to stop you and sigh out, almost as dramatically as you’re being, “I’m sorry.”

It stops you from trying to turn away from him. Other than that, it doesn’t seem to do much else in Kanda’s favor. His hand that is still resting on your shoulder starts drawing mindless circles into it. He hopes it’s soothing; he wants to be soothing for you. He lets a few more beats pass before he talks again, “just please… open your eyes.”

You seem to listen to his plea, as you peek open one eye to scowl at him, “I won’t forgive you, dumbass.”

He can’t hold back the smirk. You have forgiven him by now if your reply is that. He leans down to kiss you but you pull back, “I don’t accept kisses from assholes.”

His face stays as close to you as you let him as he raises an eyebrow, “hm? That’s odd, given that you gave me a welcome home kiss a few hours ago.”

Your palm hits his face in a matter of seconds. He laughs and kisses your palm instead. You make a grossed-out sound and pull it back, “you’re infecting me with your dumbassery! Go away!”

He rolls his eyes but holds your hand, “if you’re already infected, I feel like you can give me a kiss anyways…”

You pout and huff out before you look at him, “be mindful next time you try to help me, okay?”

He nods, “I promise.”

You lean up the rest of the way and connect your lips. He’s happy he learned something new about you today; you’re his favorite thing to keep learning about, no matter how many years it’ll take. He’s looking forward to each and every one of them.

More or less time-consuming doodles from January 2024. 1. A few of my favorite characters from the original Król Lew PBF - taking place in The Pridelands region after Kiara and Kovu's reign. All of those OCs are over 10 years old... - Kat Malay - small,  feisty, cynical healer from the Outlands. Very feisty, very annoying. My first serious role-play character, first created in 2009, last drawn... probably here.  - Lavi - a sweet, good-hearted guy. Too bad he was the leader of a rather neutral-bad-ish pride and he hated it to the bone. - Moran - oooooh, another man from the top! Seriously, writing his storyline was one of the most intense events in my life. Adopted son of a charismatic leader, Moran grew through the ranks of the Scarlet Dawn pride until he himself sat on the throne. - Ornareni - once a cheerful lioness, who gave up her sanity for getting demonic powers - to better serve her beloved pride. (yea, these are horns, man that were crazy times in the game). 2. Project of a new rp-char from a different game, here portrayed as an adolescent.

3. My sweetest baby Damaja and his daughter, Nyesha (belongs to @hawkclash ). Damaja's angsty story needs a separate post. Anyway, these two finally got to talk a bit longer than just a "Hi". 4. Moran and Padme (belongs to a friend over dA, if they are even still on that site), the love of his life. I just heard that stupid Polish pop song and while I hate the lyrics etc, the chorus is just a bomb of bass and melody - and this combination is the ultimate ear worm for me. It definitely suits the naive, young love of these two. 5. Scar's daughter Roho (again - @hawkclash ) and Mosi, the king's most loyal guard and follower. Both are from an alternative universe timeline, where Nala doesn't get to get help, and Scar continues his rule over Pride Rock.

Brave, strong , helping , sweet personality . Got her Mum’s features…1 difference is that she got her hair black that’s all ( war scars and bruises in her body ..which proves that she’s fighting the good fight from a very ..very young age )

Just like spring she’s always keeping a happy air around ..Very very motivating to others ..New or seniors ..+ she is loved by kids whenever she’s out in public ....visits orphanages and brings gifts for them after a mission is nicely done ..

As you already know, Simon is her elder brother and has also gone through “that” trauma but she didn’t turn like Ghost … She is always the Lavender to everyone’s life ..Specially Soap boi ..

Lav can take all bullets for him …

Fun fact : Soap just melts every time he sees Lav around..fireworks starts dancing in his sky heart 😂💜

Ghost had to hold him ..once he saw Lav in a pretty pink gown , was about to fall on solid …

It's a super old line from one of my poems but I've always loved this line:

"Words of silk, shredded by a rasp"

I don't know why, because I've wrote better, but this one does something to me.

Rujav is the father of the main character from Blue Blood 1 (Mahrias), and the ruler of Elohia during that time. He is married to Evah Norvane, though the two of them have never held a romantic love for each other. They used to be friendlier to each other but they had a falling out, due to a situation.

He's also the only child of Lavis Kontemno and Raja Mallora, and has a lot of issues surrounding his parents, particularly his father. They weren't around much for a part of his childhood and he resented them heavily for it, especially since he knew that given a choice, his parents never would have had him. He's always known that he was born simply to be the heir to Elohia, and that's why he's put so much pressure on himself to be "perfect".

Despite his many, many flaws as a parent, he is an excellent ruler and very well-respected throughout Li Hei. People respect him, but they do not like him as a person. He acts like he's 100% fine with that, though deep down it bothers him that he's not beloved, like Osin Solark (his best friend).

Although it may not often seem like it, he truly does love his sons. He's the kindest to Sahrav because he knows the difficulties he's going to face as a ruler, but sadly this comes at a detriment to his relationship with the other two.

Mefi is his long-time human partner and the love of his life. They're supposed to be keeping their relationship secret but over the years they've become a bit lax about hiding it, so it's basically an open secret at this point where everyone just pretends that they don't know.

Mefi's a lot warmer than Rujav and is essentially a third parent to the Kontemno brothers, picking up emotionally where both Rujav and Evah slack off. He's a lot closer to Mahrias and Viter since they're otherwise left behind.
