Unown (Pokemon Legends Arceus): It is hard to believe these strangely shaped pokemon are truly living creatures. I’ve pointed out that the species’ many forms resemble writing from other lands; no one will take me seriously.
-
“But there are clear patterns to them! See-“ he flips through the booklet of field notes and points at the inscriptions. “They’re arranged in blocks, like sentences! Each form could be a different letter!”
“They match no language in recorded history, professor.” Kamado’s gruff voice responds.
“It could be an ancient language, maybe it’s so old all the records have been lost!”
“Well we’re all out of luck then.”
“Don’t you think it deserves further study?”
He chuckles dismissively. “With all due respect sir there are more important places to spend our time than trying to decipher this mess.” He says, gesturing at the book. “I suggest we keep our focus on the present and questions we can actually answer. Unless you have any leads let’s leave the past where it belongs shall we?” He gives him a rough pat on the shoulder.
“Cylene,” Laventon turns to the captain. “Surely you’re with me on this at least?”
She shakes her head, speaking with thinly veiled sympathy. “I’m sorry professor, we’ve hit a wall. We have no further evidence to pursue on the topic. It’s certainly no language I’ve ever seen. I can’t help you.”
“Then that’s that.” Kamado concludes. “Consider this meeting adjourned.”
Laventon sighs in defeat, making his way for the door.
“I believe you.”
An embarrassingly high pitched squeal escapes him as he flinches in surprise, swiveling to face whoever just seemingly teleported behind him. He breathes a sigh of relief when he sees Ress leaning against the doorframe. “Oh, it’s just you. Were you eavesdropping the whole time?”
“Maybe. What can I say, as a fellow scientist I can’t resist getting the rundown on the latest theories as soon as I can.”
“Well it’s nice to know someone believes in discovery for discovery’s sake. I couldn’t get those two to give me the time of day, but I suppose you heard as much.”
“Well of course! Especially when it comes to all those weird wiggly letters I tracked down, I spent weeks scouring the fields for them you know.”
“That you did. And made incredible time all things considered.” He flips through the pages again, hoping he’ll have some sort of epiphany if he stares hard enough. “I know there’s something to this but even I have to admit... maybe Kamado’s right. It’s utter nonsense.”
“Not necessarily.” There’s an odd glint in their eyes.
“What do you mean? Have you found something?”
“No, unfortunately. I just mean there must be someone out there who can read them right?”
“You think so?”
“I’m positive.”
He laughs at their relentless optimism. “No one can really be certain unless they’ve met such a person themselves, but you’ve got the spirit my friend!” He gently closes the notebook and returns it to one of his labcoat pockets. “Wait.” He remembers the rift. “Have you met someone? Can you read them? Ress, do you recognize this language?”
They seem to be considering something. After a brief moment of silence they respond with a casual smile. “How do you think I found them so quick?”
“Wait! You- you can read them? What do they say?”
“Those inscriptions say where all the letters are hiding. Well, were hiding before I found them. Some are a little cryptic but they get the job done. Most of the time.” They suppress a grimace, thinking about those fucking trees. Every tree in that swamp was withered, it was worse than the one with the magikarp statue.
“Is it a language from your world then? From the future? One we don’t have the means to decode yet, I mean?”
There’s that look again. That glint in their eye. Why does something feel strange about it? Does something feel strange about it? He must be imagining things.
Their smile drifts slightly closer to smirk territory. “Something like that.”
