[T]he growth of lavender historically [...] [is] drawn into [...] [a] narrative journey as matters of horticulture in the English countryside give way to questions of beauty culture at sales counters in the faraway American Midwest.
---
England's cultural association with lavender is of long standing. A flowering plant native to the Maritime Alps, Lavandula angustifolia was [probably] [...] [brought] to the British Isles by the Romans. [...] By the eighteenth-century, lavender farms were a striking presence in the agrarian landscapes of Surrey in southern England. The village of Mitcham was renowned for fields which grew purple through late spring and early summer. In 1749 physic gardeners Ephraim Potter and William Moore founded one of England's earliest commercial distilleries at nearby Figges Marsh, distributing perfumed oils and manufactured toiletries [...].
South from Mitcham, in a belt of land characterized by the light gravelly soil well-suited to herbal production, lavender farms, market gardens and smallholdings grew to encircle neighbouring Croydon [...] and Sutton. During the Regency period, the essence of Lavandula angustifolia (the taxa commonly referred to as ‘English lavender’) was judged by perfumers as superior to the French variety (Lavende de Provence) and so commanded a higher market price.
Romantic voices sentimentalised a pastoral landscape of dewy-fields and honest toil: ‘In every direction, the low hillsides of the farms are swept with the bloomy pastel tint of reapers in the fields. As the day wears on, the fragrance rises like incense in the air, wandering tribes of paper-white butterflies drift over the fields and in the clear depths of blue-sky, larks discant the joy of life.‘ This golden age in Surrey's horticultural history was recalled in a sales booklet for lavender-scented ‘Old English’, its manufacturer the House of Yardley recalling a landscape hazed with lavender: ‘distilling fine perfumes from English flowers for England's grand dames.’ [...] Status as one of the nineteenth-century's best-loved fragrances is owed to Queen Victoria. As well as being the preferred scent for soap-bars and toilet-water in the Royal household, among the general population lavender was believed to serve well as, variously, a cure-all [...], a moth deterrent in wardrobes and drawers, [...] and a pleasing scent given to freshly laundered bed linen. [...]
---
During the early twentieth century, the rapid expansion of Greater London southwards meant that the reaches of Surrey once synonymous with lavender were consumed by a metroland of roads, suburbs, and factories.
The interwar period saw the emergence of a new English lavender growing region in North Norfolk. In 1932, around the village of Heacham [a] farmer and plantsman [...] sowed six acres of lavender beds as an initial experiment [...]. Queen Mary, consort of King George V and a renowned flower fancier, was sufficiently impressed that a lease of land was arranged from [a] neighbouring [...] Estate, property of the Royal family. Lavender production prospered. By 1936 more than a hundred acres of nursery beds and open fields were planted with a widening range of hybrids and cultivars [...]. During her tour of the flower fields, Queen Mary was accompanied by an influential escort. Mr William Arthur Poucher was a figure rising to prominence in Britain's modernising beauty industry, and recently appointed as chief perfumer to the House of Yardley. [...] [Poucher] established a contract making Norfolk Lavender exclusive supplier of flower extract for use producing Yardley's flagship line of women's toiletries [...]. The firm was issued with a Royal Warrant of Appointment as the supplier of perfume to the household of H.M. Queen Mary; and permission was thus granted to display the patron's royal coat of arms on product packaging. With it, the idea of lavender as a quintessentially English scent was once again revived. [...]
---
[A]vailability at the department store beauty counter signall[ed] suitability according to social position [...] [and was] calibrated against the class-based identifications of British interwar society [...]. During the 1930s, the coupling of Englishness and loveliness was not only domesticated but identified as an exportable asset. [...] Subsidiary companies [...] were established in Sydney, Paris, Toronto, San Francisco, and New York [...]. [A]dvertising art pictured an idealised geography of English virtue and cultural tradition [...]. [P]romotional brochures enabling mail-order purchase across North America promoted London's West End as a global centre of fashion and taste [...]. [Commercial] domestication of 'Home Treatments' was pivotal in these tactile geographies of the body [...], turning [...] treatment away from the uptown salon [...] and extending technical expertise to the individual [...] [who was encouraged to] diagnose their own skin [...]. The codifying of complexion also configured powerful ideas of what was normal (and by inference abnormal) [...], heightening awareness of the social costs that came of 'failing' to treat 'bad' skin [...]. The [flagship lavender-scented] powder's tonal palette began at 'Natural' (a normative term used as an indicator for the fairest skin), then graduated from 'English Peach' [...]. It culminated at 'Gypsy'. None of the labels in this typology is unproblematic. [...] [C]ommodified culture of colour [...] served also to confirm racial categories, and normalise sensuous descriptors (softness, freshness, smoothness) as virtuous forms of whiteness.

You and him are the last. You’re both special-made units, built to fight alongside each other as much as you fight against each other.
You two roam the wastes, as the last. Finding barest hints of life in soil long dead. Collecting bones is a habit for you, by now. Your adversary scolds you for gathering extra weight. You two shelter in the refuse of your manufacturing plants. The corpses of your comrades are here, bits and pieces of those who share your face, but are not you. It reminds you of the corpses gathered in your bags, shards of beings long forgotten. You endeavor to remember your comrades. You tell your adversary this, and wait for him to laugh. He never does.
***
You two come across your eventuality. It bears down on you in the form of a mechanical monstrosity Unsurprising, as it was what you and your companion were built to kill. It’s a spindly creature, a patchwork beast made to cannibalize other machines. The thing resembles a scorpion, you think, though you’ve never seen one in person. It strikes at your companion first. His black armor is too strong for the monstrosity’s stinger.
You aren’t so lucky. Models like you are designed for speed over staying power. So as you float with your levmag, it’s little work for the beast to smash you to the ground. The impact echoes in your sensors. It’s soon replaced with the piercing scream of the monstrosity.
You feel your companion’s hands lift you up, heave your body on his back. He carries you back to the tiny repair plant you holed up in for the last few days.
***
There’s no way to fix your legs. You’re unsurprised. Your partner is crushed.
He curls around you, mournful and apologetic. He cries the only way you two can: shuddering and rocking. He pets your hair and stares at you, like he’s trying to memorize your face. You can accept your mortality, but you can’t stand the desperation on your partners face.
So instead, you make plans with him. Optimistic blueprints full of potential heredity. Your advanced sensors, his lock-on tracking. Your levmag and cooling systems, his suspension and repair systems. Your slim frame, his bulky armor. Your circuitry, his motherboard. Your face, his eyes. You compromise on the hair, settling for a lavender shade neither you nor him possess.
***
He starts to go first. You’re surprised: it’s a slow decline, rather a sudden drop. He won’t tell you what’s killing him, what might kill you. He busies himself with other work: tidying the space, fixing the repair machines, doting on you. But you can see it in his body, the way he falls apart.
Entwined in the night, he finally brings it up. A systematic failure, where his battery corrodes and spills acid through his skeleton. You both joke about a leaky heart. You both know that once he is gone, you will be too.
Early in the morning, you finally ask him. You ask him if he’d be willing to merge with you. Take your broken body and combine it with his dissolving one. You each have the flesh to fix one another, but not enough for both.
***
It takes weeks to repurpose the repair equipment. It takes a toll on both of you.
***
One more night together before you’re both ready. That morning, you take his hand. He straps you in to the bay, tenderly maneuvering your legs. He straps himself in, as you blow him kisses from your tomb The lids slide shut. You bask in your last moments. It’s warm, you think. It feels like the night, wrapped around each other in your bed.
The last step is this: you both lay down in the repair bays and sacrifice your cortex chips, your personality and cognition. The overseeing computer takes your personality values, pairs them, and combines them. Like water and oil, like shuffling cards. Like meiosis. You hope your ill-fated child gets your optimism. Their other father hopes they gain his “realistic outlook.” You both wish the child retains the other’s compassion and care.
***
You are you, when you wake, but you are also the not-yous. You are you, a boy (?) with lilac hair and no memories. You are also the not-yous, from which your body came piecemeal off their carcasses. You wake up alone, sleep-warm and bleary. You aren’t sure where came from, or where to go. All you know is the bed, and a faint feeling of being hugged from either side.
You stumble upon the unrecognizable corpses of (what you think are) your fathers. You don’t know why, but you start crying, laughing, coughing. It feels like your first breath.
(In the recesses of your mind, you think you can hear cheering. The not-yous explode in celebration.)

woah... can we have some information on all the ROs parents/families? if i read that right it means J and Kinsley are cousins?????
sure! +yes, Kinsley and J are cousins, but only technically!
Dylan Quinn──
Reece Quinn, Dylan's father. 37 years old. He's an art restorationist painter! Reece and Dylan share a love of art, and Reece is very supportive that Dyl wants to take their art all the way. He's a bit clumsy in his concerns about Dylan's education that it gets them in a few arguments but Dylan knows that at the end of the day their father just wants the best for them!
Laurel Benson, previously Quinn, born Carter, Dylan's mother. 43 years old. She lives in Austria now. They haven't spoken in almost five years. She's an art museum curator. She might have a newborn but that's just speculation on Dylan's part.
Shayne Walker──
Andrew Walker, Shay's father. 48 years old. Recently promoted to a high ranking manager in a heavy duty vehicle manufacturing business─he looks over the presentations of new models and keeps track of their quality. He used to fly all over the world to make sure their machines were working properly in overseas countries but now has a more permanent spot. Shay gets his humour from his father and they have a very good relationship.
Deirdre Walker, Shay's mother. 47 years old. DeDe has a chronic illness that makes it hard for her to move for extended periods of time and as such has stopped working to take over full time at home. Shay and his mother bond over their love of food. She is very kind and full of heart to hearts──DeDe gives the best hugs in the world!
Danielle Walker, soon to be Peterson, Shay's older sister. 23 years old. Her fiance is Ryan Peterson (24). Owns her own flower shop! Danielle and Shay get along quite well, but they're not exactly talk every day close.
Ingrid Walker, Shay's younger sister. 8 years old. She likes to pla pranks on and with Shay, and is becoming quite the jokester like her brother!.
Kinsley Grace-Cameron──
Emilia Grace, Kinsley's mother. Emilia is Kinsley's birth mother, from her egg─she carried Kinsley to full term pregnancy (Kinsley was almost a week late.) She died two years ago, aged 36. She was a criminal defence lawyer. Kinsley and Emilia were extremely close.
Lavender Cameron, Kinsley's mother. 39 years old. Works as a corporate business lawyer, is currently the sole owner of Grace and Cameron, the law firm. Never got on the best with Kinsley and their relationship has only gotten colder since her wife's death. Lavender has very high expectations for her daughter, but deep down she just wants Kinsley to do her best and be happy.
Jared Montgomery, Kinsley's father. 32 years old. Works as an auditor for New York's state government. Doesn't take part in Kinsley's life as a father, but he does have a... amicable relationship with her.
The Grace Aunts/Cousins. Emilia's sisters, Elizabeth (40), Emberly (38) and Elise (28). Elizabeth's son Karden (21) and Emberley's twins Georgina and Gabriella (19).
The Cameron Aunts/Uncles/Cousins. Lavender's brothers, Malachite (46) and Flint (38) and sister Lilac (27). Malachite's sons Sterling (24) and Roland (23), Flint's daughter Jade (21) and Lilac's son Oliver (4).
bar Oliver, Kinsley is the youngest of the cousins and is now under the most scrutiny from her family to live up to their legacy. Kinsley doesn'y get along with most of her extended family, but used to be closer to her cousins Georgina and Gabriella before her mother died.
Jaxon/Jasmin Montomery──
Archibald Montgomery, J's father. 53 years old. CEO of a business company... something to do with stocks... oil or gold or something. Declared J disowned a few months ago.
Hannah Montgomery, previously Morgenstern, born Hastings, J's mother. 51 years old. Current Mayor for New York. Trying very hard to keep contact with J... trying very hard to keep control of J.
Arabella Montgomery, J's little sister. Newly turned 11 years old. Loves J so very much, it's caused tension between Bella and her parents... who are on the verge of a divorce!
Jared Montgomery, J's paternal uncle. 32 years old. Works for Hannah in their municipal government, he is an auditor.
Peter Hastings, J's maternal uncle. 44 years old. Working as an engineer for a train line company. Very protective of J and Arabella, currently letting J stay in his apartment.
Theodore/Theodora/Theo Wesley──
Miles Wesley, Theo's father. 42 years old. Neurosurgeon.
Paulina Wesley, born Prescott, Theo's mother. 43 years old. Pediatric Surgeon.
both of Theo's parents are very loving but they're also very busy... Theo tends to stay out of their way when they're at home because they don't want to bother their parents when they're so tired/supposed to be resting.

10 Natural Dry Skin Remedies You Can DIY at Home
Tumblr media
Sometimes we don’t pay much attention to caring for our skin, even though it’s the largest organ in the body. Skin suffers from dryness due to winter weather, hot showers and vigorous scrubbing with a towel when we dry ourselves.
You don’t have to head out to buy expensive lotions and potions to rehydrate your skin – your kitchen may already contain all the ingredients you need. Natural remedies are also better for your skin, as they don’t contain all the extra chemicals that manufactured skin creams have in them.
Here are 10 simple and all-natural remedies for dry skin:
Tumblr media
1. Olive Oil Cleanser
Olive oil works as a natural cleanser and moisturizer.  All you need to do is rub the oil on your skin and drape a warm, damp cloth over your face until it cools. Wipe away any excess oil and you’re done. Olive oil is a good choice for a skin cleanser because it doesn’t strip away your skin’s natural oils.
Tumblr media
2. Rich Avocado Mask
The creamy richness of avocado works well to soothe dry skin. We suggest pureeing half an avocado and mixing it with a teaspoon of olive oil. If your skin is very dry, add a tablespoon of honey too. Apply the mask and leave on for 15 to 20 minutes. For an extra moisture boost, apply your regular moisturizer after you have removed the mask.
Tumblr media
3. Olive Oil and Sugar Scrub
This combination makes a great exfoliating scrub with moisturizing benefits. Mix half a cup of sugar with 2 tablespoons of olive oil. You can also add an essential oil, such as lavender, to give a soothing fragrance.
Rub the mixed ingredients into your skin, and then wash off. Apply a moisturizer to double up on the benefits of exfoliated skin.
Tumblr media
4. Oatmeal Bath Soak
Add a cup of oatmeal to a warm bath, and enjoy the benefits of rehydrated skin. The oat product has skin-soothing properties, and it also helps your skin to retain moisture from the water.
Tumblr media
5. Homemade Oatmeal Honey Mask
Oatmeal also makes a good mask or exfoliator. Mix 2 tablespoons of oats with a tablespoon of honey and a dash of water. Gently warm the mixture, then rub it onto your skin. It can be used as an exfoliator and washed off straight away, or you can leave it on for around 15 to 20 minutes as a hydrating mask.
Tumblr media
6. Coconut Oil
Coconut oil isn’t just useful in the kitchen – use it as a moisturizing cream at bedtime. Because it is solid at room temperature, it can be applied easily. If you have chapped hands and feet, apply the oil, then cover with thick socks or non-latex gloves.
Tumblr media
7. Add Oil to Your Bath
Natural oils such as olive, coconut, argan and avocado oil can be used as a bath soak to moisturize skin and protect the natural skin barrier, which is often stripped away by washing with drying soaps that remove the natural oils from the skin.
Add a few tablespoons of oil under running bath water. If you don’t fancy scrubbing the oil slick off the bath after you’ve finished, rub a small amount of oil to your skin after your bath instead.
Tumblr media
8. Milk Compresses
Milk has natural anti-inflammatory properties, and it contains lactic acid, which works as a mild, natural exfoliant. Apply milk compresses to your skin for 5 to 10 minutes at a time. It’s great for irritated, itchy skin too, but lactic acid can sting cracked skin, so use with caution. Apply milk by soaking a washcloth in a bowl of cold milk and then pressing it against your driest, itchiest spots for a few minutes.
Tumblr media
9. Fruit Enzyme Cleanser or Exfoliant
Fruit enzymes can really help your skin during cold weather. The alpha-hydroxy acids exfoliate the top layer of dull, dead skin cells on the face and body.
Use a pineapple, pumpkin or papaya fruit-enzyme face mask twice a week for bright skin.
Tumblr media
10. Aloe Vera
Aloe vera gel isn’t just for treating sunburn. It can help your skin during the winter months by reducing redness and irritation due to dryness.
Some people can develop allergic contact dermatitis from aloe, so do a patch test first before applying it to a big area of skin.

I prepared myself a bath with nice hot water and some hand-manufactured (I literally know the person who made it) lavender oil diluted in half a glass of milk, submerged myself for like half an hour while I read Love, Theoretically (Jack--his name is Jack Smith, I hate it, it's the most generic name ever, someone needs to by Ali Hazelwood a book on names--just told Elsie that they won't have sex until she learns to ask for what she wants), then I decided it was enough and I pulled the plug--
Only to realize that I haven't done, you know, the whole bathing part. With a soap and a loofah and whatnot.
...Stressed much?
