DOJ Indicts Russian Nationals in $10 Million Scheme to Spread Covert Propaganda to U.S. Audiences
Tumblr media
Brett Meiselas at MeidasTouch:
The Department of Justice has unsealed an indictment charging two Russian nationals, Kostiantyn Kalashnikov and Elena Afanasyeva, with conspiring to violate the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) and money laundering in a scheme to covertly influence U.S. audiences. Both Kalashnikov and Afanasyeva remain at large, according to the DOJ’s announcement today. The indictment reveals that Kalashnikov, 31, and Afanasyeva, 27, who were employees of Russia's state-controlled media outlet RT, played pivotal roles in funneling nearly $10 million to a Tennessee-based online content creation company, referred to in court documents as U.S. Company-1. The content company, unbeknownst to its viewers, was funded and directed by RT to produce pro-Russian videos aimed at American social media users. This company is believed to be TENET Media, who touts right-wing hosts Lauren Southern, Tim Pool, Benny Johnson, and others, as part of their roster.
[...] Since its launch in November 2023, U.S. Company-1, believed to be TENET Media, has posted nearly 2,000 videos across platforms such as YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, and X, garnering over 16 million views on YouTube alone. The DOJ notes that while the content appeared to offer commentary on domestic issues, it was aligned with the Russian government's goal of weakening U.S. opposition to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The defendants are also accused of deceiving two U.S.-based online commentators with large followings into producing content for U.S. Company-1 without disclosing RT’s involvement. The DOJ alleges that RT used a fictional persona named “Eduard Grigoriann” to conceal its role as the company’s true financial backer. Within the indictment lies a troubling sequence involving directives from Elena Afanasyeva, alias "Helena Shudra," to manipulate content creation at U.S. Company-1, aiming to tailor videos to specific agendas. Notably, in early 2024, Afanasyeva orchestrated the creation of tailored content that included a video featuring a "well-known U.S. political commentator," who MeidasTouch can identify as Tucker Carlson, during an bizarre visit to a Russian grocery store in which Carlson said he was "radicalized" by how low the prices were in Moscow.
The DOJ handed down indictments to two Russian nationals Kostiantyn Kalashnikov and Elena Afanasyeva for violating FARA.
The two helped funnel nearly $10M into creating a right-wing pro-Russia propaganda outfit called TENET Media founded by Lauren Chen and Liam Donovan. TENET Media has right-wing pundits Lauren Southern, Tim Pool, Dave Rubin, and Benny Johnson in their stable.

A malaria vaccine called RTS,S is available, but only given to children who live in high risk areas. The vaccine shows modest efficacy, and does not prevent transmission, meaning people can still unknowingly spread it.
It’s because of this that researchers are fervently working to find a more universal solution.
Unlike other mRNA vaccines, including the COVID-19 vaccine, which works by neutralizing antibodies, this new vaccine takes a different approach — targeting malaria right where it starts, in the liver, researchers explained.
After initial exposure, say, through a mosquito bite, the parasite uses the bloodstream to travel to the liver where the parasite matures, before going on to infect blood cells, which is when an infected person will start to show symptoms.
“Our unique approach relies on T-cells which play a critical role in immunity,” Mitch Ganley, co-author of the study, said in a statement. “Specifically, a type of T-cell called a tissue-resident memory T-cell, that halts malaria infection in the liver to completely stop the spread of infection.”
Tumblr media
T-cells are a type of white blood cell and are essential for helping the body protect itself from infection. T-cells play a critical role in the ongoing study of many conditions and viruses, from HIV to cancer.
Researchers also note that a key difference with this vaccine is that it works even if a person has been previously exposed to the disease.
“A lot of malaria vaccines undergoing trials have worked really well in animal models or when they’re given to people who haven’t had malaria before, but they don’t work well when given to people living in malaria-endemic regions,” Lauren Holz, Ph.D., researcher at the University of Melbourne and co-author of the paper said in a statement. “In contrast, our vaccine is still capable of generating protective liver-specific immune cells and providing protection even when the animal models have been pre-exposed to the disease.”
Vaccines against parasitic diseases do not yet exist, so if this one proves to be effective, it could signal a momentous step forward for vaccine development as a whole.
As next steps, the research team will seek to begin clinical trials in humans, which could take several years.

Swoon Excerpt Reveal!
Tumblr media
SWOON, an all-new brother's best friend standalone romance by Lauren Rowe, is coming November 1st, and I have an excerpt reveal for you!
▪️Excerpt:
I need to cool my jets. Slow things down. Stop running off at the mouth. From now on, I need to remember our arrangement. No strings. No promises. No leading her on to think otherwise. It’s one thing to role-play being Amy’s fantasy man and another thing to start believing it myself. One of us has to keep a clear head here—remember this isn’t a fairytale and I’m not her Prince Charming. And that person is going to be me.
Read the rest here: https://wp.me/pax1MW-4J5
▪️Blurb:
Growing up, I knew my older brother’s best friend thought of me as “Logan’s kid sister.” For me, though, our next-door neighbor, Colin, felt like anything but a sibling. Whenever I spied on him through my bedroom window, as he banged away, shirtless, on his drum kit, I felt sensations inside me I’d never felt for my actual brother. But when we moved away and Colin’s band took off like a rocket, I knew my tweener fantasies would never become a reality.
Fast-forward nine years to my brother’s wedding, when I saw Colin again and we shared a secret, drunken kiss that rocked my world. The next morning, Colin blamed the alcohol. Said we should pretend the kiss, and my unfortunate text afterward, never happened.
Now that I’m heading to LA to work for Colin and crash at his place, though, all bets are off. I’m determined to make Colin swoon for me, the same way I’ve always done for him. Because no matter what he insisted, Colin’s body during our kiss, and the shocking thing he whispered into my ear right afterward, made it clear he doesn’t really think of me as his little sister, any more than I do.

2018 Second Round Travel Grant Recipients
Tumblr media
Photo: Andrea Nixon performs in Toronto during Canada Music Week
During the second round of travel funding in 2018, award in July, the Edmonton Arts Council (EAC) approved support for 65 artists and projects travelling to 29 different cities in 10 different countries.
Travel grants have long been an important offering from the Edmonton Arts Council as we encourage collaboration, professional development, and exhibition opportunities that either aren’t available in Edmonton or that provide artists with a larger audience. Similarly, EAC’s Executive Director, Sanjay Shahani, feels strongly about the need for artists to travel for networking and to showcase their work. “It’s important to give artists opportunities to connect with artistic communities, and to support artistic collaborations. Artists need to be at major events, gatherings, and conferences to connect with their peers. If we can provide a small contribution towards helping them go to events—for instance, supporting a band playing at a major festival in front of producers and presenters to potentially get booked—that’s important.”
“It’s important for our artists to collaborate with international artists, so that the work that they’re doing here in Edmonton has staying power, so it’s not just shown and seen in Edmonton, but has the potential for touring, for dissemination, and for distribution.”
Even in the digital age where meetings can happen over Skype and artists can be discovered on YouTube and Instagram, travel is vital to starting and growing careers in the arts. “Travel is just one really important piece of sharing an artist’s work, it allows artists to build relationships which you can’t do any other way,” Shahani says. “Most art forms require collaboration, most art forms require relationships between artists and arts communities.”
If you’ve got a travel opportunity in mind and need support, the deadline for the final round of 2018 travel grants is October 1, 2018. Click here for more information; applications open on September 1, 2018. The EAC grants team is willing and able to provide consultation before an artist chooses to apply; if you’ve never applied to an EAC grant before, are wondering if your project is eligible, or have any other questions about creating a strong grant, email your questions to [email protected] or call 780-424-2787. Artists residing in Edmonton for at least one year can apply for up to $750 to support travel for the purposes of training, development, presentation, touring, networking, and/or marketing.
The current travel grant recipients sought out unique opportunities, or were invited to showcase their work, around the world. Diverse art projects and training opportunities—in visual arts, dance, music, writing, installation, theatre, poetry, and film—were supported from Calgary to Tel Aviv. Get some inspiration for your own projects and opportunities by seeing what our current travel grant recipients are working on—and where they’re going.

Parents & Friends
Some stans have picked sides due to the parent’s behaviour on SM. Just the way some reflect all the hate collected from other stans onto the girls, it’s the same deal when it comes to their parents. Due to the fact that certain people can’t stand them, they decide to whether unstan or throw shit at the girls for it.
If you don’t think all these subtle shade going on is done with a purpose, try to give it a second thought.
The thing with this whole “shading” is that we've got two viewpoints:
From Camila’s side we saw how her parents stopped acknowledging the group & this happened since the fighting days. Now, let's put ourselves in the Cabellos’ shoes for a moment:
Imagine one day your daughter & her bandmates are played such a dirty trick & they cut communication. (Yes, I still believe this is how all went down). Anyway back to our scenario, now thanks to this they are not on speaking terms anymore. Your daughter releases her first solo project. It's important for her. However the people pulling the group strings are setting her in a very dark position. They are painting her in a very negative light in front of her fans.
Around those days, you log into your Twitter account several times & you see one fan turns against her. But as time passes by that one “fan” multiplicates & turns into 10 more haters. Then 50, then 100 & so it goes on & on. The situation worsens. Now, your daughter starts receiving hateful tweets 24/7. Your daughter starts getting sick. Her mental health state is seriously compromised but the people behind her career are doing nothing to help the situation, in fact they are making it more toxic for her. The issue with her bandmates is still not solved. The haters seem unstoppable at this point… Your daughter is mentally exhausted to a point where she describes her anxieties having anxieties.
That continues for a year. Along the way your daughter & her bandmates rekindled their bond. But it’s not all bright again since they must not give that away on camera. Another thing to add is that her bandmates are told not to defend her on SM to make the haters cease. Tell me are you happy with the brand & the poisonous environment they created around your daughter? The answer is obvious.
Let’s take a look at 5H’s angle. The way I see it, you’re a 40-50 year old & you spend your days bashing a 20 year old through Twitter... immaturity at its finest, right?
The tricky aspect here is that the parents’ wishes contradict their actions.
E.g.  The parents want hatred to stop. Some like Mama Dre have expressed it & also it’s not even necessary to have this captured on a tweet to understand. Anyhow, they want the hate to cease but they encourage haters with their comments? Logic 2+2= potato
Now, personally the moment Mike started being shady that seemed fishy af to me. We’re talking about the same person that liked C’s departure letter (apparently he unliked it a little after, not really sure). Anyway, even if he didn’t, he was always all about the five girls & one of the non-problematic ones before the mess started unraveling. It makes sense that they started using him, not only to cut all ties with Camren but to influence the stans more strongly as well.
I asked lawyerlarry if this has happened with their boys, using their relatives to mold or push the narrative. This was her answer:
Tumblr media
Since we don’t know what type of contract the girls are under we can’t know for sure if the parents are completely obligated. However one thing is for sure, clearly as a parent you’re going to want the best for your kid.
I’m bringing back some points I’ve written about this same subject in a past masterpost…
TV anon: “The thing about the parents is that THEY ARE PARENTS so they are gonna be protective and going to support their child 100%. Now, the moment the girls became legal, the parents are off negotiations or meetings so the only thing they know is what their daughters told them (and we don’t know how restrictive the contract is or even if the girls go and spill full deets to their parents) and you are right, their behavior is very contradictory, even from parents of the same child. Example, Lauren’s parents. Her dad it’s super supportive of the 5 of them and her mom is really over the top, to be honest lol. I have seen them throwing shade and then talking about supporting the 5 of them so maybe the shade is for the label. Or at some point it was for Camila but then they got informed and realized the situation, who knows. Let’s not forget, they don’t belong to the industry so they don’t know how to handle situations like these. Such as their children, they are too emotional. The parents and friends subject is tricky, cause who knows how much they know/or don’t know.”
Every single time I get worried I might be overthinking I return to the question told above: If they know they are only worsening their situation & attracting more toxicity toward their daughters why would they continue with this childish behaviour? Also the girls are not stupid, cause even if these were truly their parents’ actions don’t doubt they wouldn’t stop them.
Once more, this applies to their parents. When it comes to other relatives like Leilani, we're completely unaware of how close she's or not with Dinah, let alone the rest of the girls. She could be throwing shade in order to help them or simply she’s an attention seeker. For all we know a) she could have been told an alternate story along the way b) she is acquainted with only a very small part of the truth c) nothing at all & she knows just as much as we do.
When it comes to friends, let alone not their closest friends, we can coincide that they surely don’t know the story from head to toe but since they’re familiar with the girls at a certain extent they claim to for the sake of rts & attention. Dealing with the parents topic is ambiguous. “I think the parents ought to know everything, don’t fool yourself, why would the girls keep things from them?” Believe it or not, there’s always possibility. Here I consider a list of reasons why it COULD be true:
TV anon couldn’t have said it better…
When the girls became legal, procedures & regulations on the entertainment business gave a 180 degrees turn.
Non-disclosure agreements are a common thing in the industry.
Thus far none of the girls has shaded each other. Although, other people have accomplished a fraction of this “dirty work” for them. Such as friends, crew team members, & their parents. What I’ve caught on this culmination of “bitterness” is that it’s quite contradictory. To elaborate: Lucy shaded Camila around two or three weeks later by liking one IG post that was referring to C as “Canola”. What I found funny is how less than a month before, Lucy literally appeared on Dinah’s livestream hanging with her & Camila at their bus.
When I wrote that, the BB 5H issue hadn’t come out yet. Also these past few days, Lucy has publicly shown her support for Camila on SM. Also let’s add, she isn’t the only connection from Lauren that’s been doing this lately...
Tumblr media
Now, some of LAND’s friends have publicly supported C. To me, it hints at the bigger picture that the ladies are in good terms. Some of you might disagree, maybe you consider they’re not friends any longer. Fine that’s your POV, but I don’t share that perspective. Not because I refuse to let go OT5 or anything remotely similar, but like I’ve said numerous times before, the fact that the girls knew about C leaving since 2015 & all the moments we had along 2016 I consider it a sign that they were able to somewhat fix whatever issues they had a year before.
Even if you agree or not with me on their current friendship status, you can’t deny the following: LAND doesn’t speak badly about Camila bts unlike what media wants to make us believe.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Fun fact: Josh liked the following two days after the split announcement)
Tumblr media
Enough with Josh (he stans Camila hard lol) Let’s check the rest of their friends...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I would insert here the videos of Simone & Sydney jamming to CITC, unfortunately I couldn’t download them but that doesn’t me we must not take them into account as well.
Next one might not be recent but reminder that Normani wrote as part of those thoughts: “I have love and respect for all four of my bandmates whether you choose to believe it or not” “I have to address foolishness manufactured by those that have absolutely no idea what goes on” “For those who enjoy speculating and creating drama that doesn’t exist, please keep in mind that myself and the other girls in the group are PEOPLE” etc...
Tumblr media
Out of all their friends or people they’ve worked with, in my opinion, when Angie (their temporary guitarist after Ashlee left) commented on C’s IG post is the one proof that I would take over any of the above to pinpoint that THIS...

...doesn’t reflect any of THIS...
Tumblr media
In conclusion, I believe that the relatives & some friends are attempting to help the girls as much as they can. I repeat, it’s uncertain how much the girls are allowed to tell them. But some things are undeniably true... They (parents & friends) know how fucked up this business is, they have seen how much the 5 ladies have struggled in these past years. If there’s something they can’t do, is stop this madness. They can’t break the system, they can’t protect them from this industry. But they can try to fulfill part of the “dirty work”, otherwise I’m sure it would have to come directly from the girls. Don’t judge them, they are willing to do anything if it means taking some of the burden off of the girls’ shoulders. How do I know this latter? Cause I might only be a fan but I would do it too.
Question: if you had a friend or a relative in they industry, would you doubt putting yourself in the spotlight for a second in order to give them a hand?
P.S. Alejandro liked Clara’s “shady” tweet that was supposedly aimed at Camila.

The Muslim Brotherhood’s Twitter Deception
Posted on November 19, 2011
via The Muslim Brotherhood Takes Twitter – By Lauren E. Bohn | Foreign Policy.
“Miriam” (she prefers to use a pseudonym, for “security reasons”) is one of the admins of @Ikhwanweb, the official English-language Twitter page for Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood, one of the most prominent Islamist organizations in the world. Ikhwanweb, the Muslim Brotherhood’s official English website, started the twitter account @Ikhwanweb back in 2009. For years, the account was a robotic-curated Twitter feed which did little more than link to the website’s posts. But Miriam has recently helped transform the account into a virtual coliseum for some of Egypt’s most heated debates.
For the last few weeks, @Ikhwanweb has been fastidiously engaging journalists (“You got the schedule for our daily rallies, right?”), critics (“We have a lot more important things to focus on and an election to win,” in response to a flurry of questions regarding their funding) and curious lay-tweeps alike (“Check chapter 4 of our party platform for our position, the economy section at this link“). Their goal? “To spread the truth,” they say, and engage with an English-speaking audience and liberals who wouldn’t otherwise interact with them. But their critics accuse them instead of presenting a falsely forthcoming English-language front that masks their true political intentions.
“We’re tweeting to humanize the Brotherhood and correct misconceptions,” Miriam says. “We’re not this big, scary terrorist organization.” The social media enthusiast grew up with the long-banned Muslim Brotherhood. Her parents are something of Brotherhood stalwarts — her mother, a journalism professor, is running for parliament in an affluent Cairo suburb. But she’s also very much a digital native, who came of age alongside the activist generation made famous by January’s uprising. “There are so many people in the Brotherhood like me, who are young, educated, speak many languages, travel,” she explains. “I’m not an anomaly, but everyone has the wrong idea about us.”
Miriam’s partner-in-tweeting Hazem Malky, 36 — a self-described “certified Twitter addict” who previously tweeted prolifically at @hazemmalky publicly, but recently locked his account to avoid “hate-tweets” — is an editor at Ikhwanweb and medical doctor by training. Currently based in New York, he also prefers to use a pseudonym, citing worries over “Zionist elements” and the United States government. He talks a mile a minute with a vaguely Brooklyn drawl, adroitly weaving arguments together with an easy mix of American vernacular and Classic Arabic. He says he tweets from his iPhone on the road, at the dinner table, even in his sleep. “Actually,” he concedes, “it’s sort of pathetic.”
In part, their turn to Twitter reflects a broader need for the Muslim Brotherhood to engage with and reassure Egyptians and the West. The Brotherhood has been banned since 1954 and long held down by autocratic regimes. However, their recently established political arm, the Freedom and Justice Party, seems likely to have the upper hand in upcoming parliamentary elections. After twenty-four protesters, mostly Coptic Christians, were killed outside Egypt’s State TV building, Maspiro, in early October, sectarian tensions ran high. Malky said it was important for the Brotherhood to use Twitter more aggressively to respond to those concerns. “Many were implicating us, saying we had a special deal with the military,” he says over Skype, blaming both Egyptian state and independent media for habitually bashing Islamists. “But we’re used to fighting back and this is just a new frontier. We know we won’t change everyone’s mind in a few months, but we’re using every channel we can to correct and inform.”
Malky and Miriam repeatedly emphasize that the buffed up Twitter feed isn’t a top-down decision from the Brotherhood’s notoriously stringent and webbed hierarchy, but rather an internal administrative decision made by Ikwhanweb’s editorial team who say they have full control in managing the website without Muslim Brotherhood “interference.” Their tweets are not vetted, but do represent the official position of the Brotherhood — a potentially dangerous combination for any political organization. Still, they say Brotherhood big-wigs, like Khairat El-Shater, known not only as the organizational brains behind Ikhwanweb, but the most important power broker of today’s Brotherhood, “actively encourages” their online efforts.
The revamping of their Twitter feed into an instant resource hub isn’t the Brotherhood’s first attempt at establishing a vast digital footprint. In addition to Ikwhanweb and Ikwhanonline, the Brotherhood’s media extends to an extensive network of portals like Ikhwanbook, Ikhwanwtube, Ikhwanwiki, Islamophobia, and Ikhwanscope. With plans to expand the unit to cover parliamentary, and later presidential, elections throughout the country, Ikhwanweb’s team of self-proclaimed “media geeks” ranges from 15-20 executives, editors, reporters, translators, and technicians. And they plan to soon share a large new office space with their Arabic counterpart Ikhwanonline.
Ed Husain, senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, has been tweet-spatting daily with @Ikhwanweb after he ran a piece on his CFR blog “Is the Muslim Brotherhood Bribing Voters in Egypt?” Ikwhanweb promptly issued a response, to which Husain then responded. Husain calls Malky an archetypal spin-doctor, playing a game on Twitter from New York, far from the Egyptian streets.
“They put forward these people who are fluent in English, can argue well, and produce really nice quotes, but they’re not representative,” Husain argues. “The Brotherhood’s backbone is deeply conservative. They’re playing a deceitful and dangerous game.”
Yep. And Twitter conversations suggest many links between the Muslim Brotherhood, pro-Hamas Electronic Intifada and the Center for American Progress, etc. Coincidence they all know each other and parrot the same Sharia Lobby rhetoric?

P1/2. I HATE him but I don't think it's fair saying SC let WS bully. Sam seemed unaware of what he was capable of & in too deep by the time it exploded. Cait has bare min contact w/ him. Basically tweeting/RT charity only stuff. Remember she unliked that one tweet? She's not one to be swayed & normally doesn't care about neg feedback of her SM posts. Her specifically unliking that tweet showed a lot. They're not innocent in all this. Could/should do way more but I don't think either condone his-
P2/2-behavior. In the beginning how cool would it be for Sam to have a TV idol (gag) literally obsessed w/ him? Before deciding it's creepy, you'd probably be flattered. I was unaware of WS fandom messes before it happened to us so it may be SC were too. We know more than most feeding that behavior w/ pleads to stop only causes more wrongdoing. TPTB interference not upsetting an OL fan w/ 2 mil followers. It should've never gotten this bad but it seems it quickly went to a no-win for Sam. He brought this on himself. I just see a difference in actively not caring fans are being treated poorly v being stuck where you see what's going on, don't like it, but can't do much about it, which I think is more the case. Sam has downgraded his SM activity w/ him. Maybe that's all he can do? No one knows but given what we hear of Sam I see this more likely than him cheering WS on as head bully. Perception is everything so it doesn't matter what truth is, unfortunately.
You hit the nail on the head with your last sentence - perception is everything. I know there’s a lot of people, shippers and non-shippers, who are able to step back and look at everything that happened a bit more objectively. There probably was some TPTB interference involved. Maybe it was all TPTB who knows. And I’m sure there was a level of Sam thinking it really cool he was interacting with an idol. But, when it comes down to the shit Jess went through day after day for months on end, none of that matters. What matters is how deeply, deeply hurt and traumatized she was by it. What matters is how she’s still recovering from it. How Lauren and I were and are probably the only ones who know just how deeply and horribly this affected her and that kind of hurt is something logic can’t erase. It’s not that simple. When you’re being that inundated with the kind of shit Jess got, hearing that Sam was forced to do it or was stuck between a rock and a hard place doesn’t make anything better. It makes it worse. It makes Sam look like a goddamn terrible person because he’s the one Jess and others cared about and he’s the one whose fans were being pummeled and he is the one who did nothing and still has done nothing. Doesn’t matter his reasons. He did nothing. Cait did nothing and as much as people like to downplay her involvement because, yes it was nowhere near the level that Sam’s was, she too stood by and did nothing. They were both complicit.
So perception is our main problem it seems. Everyone, based on how they were affected by what happened and/or how they handled what happened, has a different perception. And it can get really messy when you have people’s feelings at play. I know people disagree and I also know people hate that we blame Sam and Cait for this. I don’t place all the blame on them. I don’t think they asked Shatner to do what he did but they also didn’t stop him, that we can tell. And Shatner was doing it in Sam’s name. Therefore, it looks terrible for Shatner (wah waaah) and even worse for Sam. That is why we put so much of the blame on him.

We Shall Overcome: Miriam Sagan, artist
Thrilled to present the fifth feature in Les Femmes Folles’ We Shall Over Come series, with writing by Miriam Sagan and photographs by her daughter, Isabel Winson-Sagan, from Summer, 2017—a geocached trail at Santa Fe Skies, an RV park and sustainable technology center off of Rt. 14 in northern New Mexico.

When Donald Trump was elected, I had already committed to spending much of 2017 collaborating with my daughter Isabel Winson-Sagan as a team called Maternal Mitochondria. I’m a poet and writer, she is a multi-media artist and builder.     Our current project is creating hidden art and poetry pathways, using the additional technology of geocaching as a way to drive walkability and audience.     We are currently focused on a site specific installation of suminagashi and text. We share a studio where we  create both the marbled paper and the poetry at the same time. Suminagashi is a traditional Japanese art of marbling with ink on water. Ours takes a contemporary approach, and includes a variety of inks, including acrylics.     The site specificity of our work is enhanced by the use of local water—from well, reservoir, watershed, etc.—in the suminagashi.    Our subject matter derives from the time, place, and from the ecology of the terrain. Mother/daughter collaborations are rare, although sons have often worked with fathers in the crafts and the arts. We share an interest in “mapping,” particularly as suminagashi can look like a topo map. Our project is a cross generational multimedia feminist derived project.     We work with the ephemeral nature of paper. Ink cannot be controlled, and the elements of water and wind infuse our work. Poetry and text also come spontaneously from the moment. The process is to express the self and the heart through external elements. The installations themselves cause the viewer to stop and reflect. Geocaching is a kind of quest or treasure hunt. Or, the installations may be come upon serendipitously as just part of a routine day. In any case, they should help anyone who encounters them to feel connection to others and to the environment.

Here is a bit of the hidden poem: it’s dangerous
to hide all of your spirit
outside of yourself and yet this land
compels all of those
who walk it. Instructions are up at
https://www.geocaching.com/geocache/GC78VPK_hidden-poem     How is this a reaction to the the loss of rights and attacks facing our nation? Both Isabel and I decided to throw ourselves into supporting our local communities and city. We joined an inter faith torah study group for spiritual grounding. We took non-violent training and attended marches. We started volunteering. My work has always had a strong awareness of historical forces—as I was raised by Marxist Jews. Our work is not topical in that it doesn’t address specific current events but aims for a deeper look at the realities we face. Water and land use, dessertification, weapons,  the female body, the degraded—and un-degraded—feminine have always been my central concerns as a poet.
Tumblr media
*** Where are you from? New Jersey. Have lived in New Mexico almost 35 years—my entire adult life. How did you get into creative work and what is your impetus for creating? I started as a grade school child, and never sopped. It is my way of living twice. Tell me about your current/upcoming show/exhibit/book/project and why it’s important to you. What do you hope people get out of your work? A geo-cached secret poetry and art trail. I hope people get a sense of serendipity, curiosity, quest, and connection.
Tumblr media
Does collaboration play a role in your work—whether with your community, artists or others? How so and how does this impact your work? I’ve worked with numerous visual artists, and am a founding ember of the Tres Chicas publishing collective. Right now I’m composing with a harpist as part of an interfaith dialogue and working in Maternal Mitochondria. Considering the political climate, how do you think the temperature is for the arts right now, what/how do you hope it may change or make a difference? Paradoxically, I think art can flourish when there is external oppression. I hate our current circumstances, but it encourages art as protest and expression.
Tumblr media
Artist Wanda Ewing, who curated and titled the original LFF exhibit, examined the perspective of femininity and race in her work, and spoke positively of feminism, saying “yes, it is still relevant” to have exhibits and forums for women in art; does feminism play a role in your work? Yes, very much so. I was in a CR group in 1971 in high school. Women artists and writers fill my pantheon of inspiration. I’m also interested in the body, handicap (I am), and I’m really interested in specificity vs. universalism—am I defined as a woman, a Jew, an American…or am I just a person. I’m thinking the answer to these contradictions is YES! Ewing’s advice to aspiring artists was “you’ve got to develop the skill of when to listen and when not to;” and “Leave. Gain perspective.”  What is your favorite advice you have received or given? From my father: There is no situation so terrible you can’t take a Greyhound bus away from it. This idea got me to New Mexico.

SPECIAL SERIES:
WE SHALL OVERCOME
With political unrest in the US, all I can think about is what to do next. What to tell our kids, how to look up and move forward. I feel a major arts movement coming on. What are you doing? What are you creating in response? Inspired by the civil rights song (after Reverend Charles Tindley of Philadelphia’s turn of the 20th century hymn)  Joan Baez popularized in the 1960s, We Shall Overcome, if you are a self-identified woman artist of any media, genre, level, style, send your work that looks forward and up, and tell me how it expresses this. Ongoing series, no work minimum or maximum. Send images as .jpgs and text in email to [email protected].
