As #BoloorSportsMania reaches its 600th blog, it gives me immense pleasure to thank all who have encouraged me to keep on working on my passion which Sports Blogging. #600 Blog deserves a special subject and what better than a tribute to Pusarla Venkata Sindhu, a legend already at the age of 23 !!
Pusarla Venkata Sindhu is a star in India and across the world in her own right. She was born on 5th Jul 1995. Bother her parents PV Ramana and P Vijaya have been national level volley ball players. Sports was in her blood.  Ramana in fact was part of the team which bronze in 1986 Seoul Olympics. He even won Arjuna award in 2000. In 2001, Gopichand won All England Championships. Sindhu drew inspiration from that and took badminton a couple of years later. She was initially coached by Mehboob Ali at the badminton courts of Indian Railway Institute of Signal Engineering and Telecommunications in Secunderabad. Sindhu had to travel 56kms daily for coaching. But she reported on time daily which showed great things were stored for her.
2012 would be a historic year for Sindhu as she won Asia Youth under 19 Championship beating Japanese Player Nozomi Okuhara in final by 18–21, 21–17, 22–20. She later faced Okuhara numerous times. She lost to her in 2017 World championship finals but beat her in the same event in 2018 in QF. In the same year, in China Masters series, she beat 2012 Olympics gold medalist Li Xuerui. That got lot of media attention. She lost in SF in that event. In 2013, Sindhu won her first Grand prix event (Malaysian Open). PV Sindhu on 8 August 2013 defeated the defending champion, second-seeded Wang Yihan of China, to enter the women's quarterfinals at the BWF World Championships. The 18-year-old, 10th-seeded Sindhu won 21–18, 23–21 in 54 minutes to set-up a meeting with another Chinese player, Wang Shixian. She beat Wang Shixian 21–18, 21–17 to become India's first medalist in women's singles at the World Championships. She became a star after this feat. It was fantastic effort. She won bronze that year and next year too. In October 2015, playing at the Denmark Open, Sindhu reached to her maiden final of a Super Series event. On her route to the final, she defeated three seeded players, namely Tai Tzu-ying, Wang Yihan and Carolina Marin. In the final, she lost to the defending champion Li Xuerui in straight games by 19–21, 12–21.
2016 proved to be historic for Sindhu. In Rio Olympics, she beat Laura Sarosi and Michelle in group stages. She later beat Tai Tzu-ying in the round of 16.  She shocked 2nd seed Wang Yihan in QF which raised eye brows among media. In a year where all Indian medal hopes was dashed, would Sindhu create history??  Sindhu beat Okuhara in straight sets in SF. She met top seed Marin in finals. She fought hard but lost to Marin in 3 sets. She charted history of achieving the feat as she is youngest and first women individual to bag an Olympic Silver medal representing India. This was the second instance of podium finish at the Olympics by any Indian badminton player.
In 2017, Sindhu avenged defeat to Marin in Indian open by beating her in finals. Sindhu became first Indian to reach finals of BWF World championships. She lost an epic final to Okuhara 19–21, 22–20, 20–22. It was as good a match as one hoped to see which had long rallies, exhilarating court coverage and stunning defense. She later won Korean open that year.
In 2018, Sindhu made it to SF of All England championships where lost to Yamaguchi in 3 sets. In World badminton championship, she faced both Okuhara in QF and Yamaguchi in SF. She beat both of them in straight sets. She was able to get past 2 of her 3 nemesis opponents but Marin still stood between her and World championships title.
Marin’s key in 2018 World championship has been her speed. She used it to great effect against Saina in QF. Same continued in finals. She raced to 3-1 lead. Sindhu bounced back to win 4 points in a row. She later led 10-8 and 15-11. But one glaring observation was that Sindhu won most of the points on Marin’s errors as she tried too much to hit near the line. Marin was dictating play and it showed. Either she made winners or errors. She won 6 points in a row to bounce back. She was hitting smashes from acute angles and it was her leg speed which enabled her to get to a position to make those shots. Sindhu fought hard to win points. She tied at 19-19. But Marin won 2 points in a row to win the first set. She had won 14 of last 10 points which was stunning considering it was a finals. Marin probably played her best set of the week in 2nd set against Sindhu. She was all over Sindhu. Sindhu was rattled and it showed in the scoreline. Marin won it 21-10. Sindhu had to settle for another silver (after Rio Olympics and 2017 World badminton championship). Sindhu had shown great improvement on mental aspects in this week where she beat her nemesis Okuhara and Yamaguchi but still was not good enough to beat Marin who was playing in a totally different level.
AT the age of 23, to win 4 world championship medals and 1 Olympic medal is a stunning achievement. Hope Tokyo 2020 gives her an opportunity to win gold medal which is missing in her cupboard.  If there is one Indian sports star who deserves a gold medal, it is Sindhu.
