Little rage update to this because I found one of the articles again:

Imagine being so out of touch with your own production, you think Villanelle is happiest when murdering people.

As if she didn’t give a WHOLE MONOLOGUE about how she used to kill in a desperate attempt to find any sensation at all. As if she didn’t come out of that darkness through finally processing some of her trauma & building this relationship with Eve during S1-3.

As if that whole S3 finale never happened: The conversation with Carolyn, begging her to see value in anything besides her ability to kill, and despair when Carolyn refuses. The cracks in her voice while they dance as it finally hits her, all the people she’s killed, and she doesn’t want to kill anymore, but she steels herself & puts on one last show to kill the woman who’s after Eve bc she finally trusts Eve enough to start to be vulnerable & let her in & trust that she’ll still be there & not find her monstrous or disgusting when she gets back; the grimace as she leans into Eve on the bridge, letting her go bc it’s the selfless-love thing to do.

Villanelle didn’t send Eve up to distract the partiers because she’s happiest when killing people. (She wanted to be a goddamn interior decorator 😭 I’m begging y’all to LISTENNN.) That hasn’t been the case since season ONE, and that wasn’t even the FULL STORY back THEN. She sent her up there because she has processed her shit & she knows how horrible and irreversible it is to kill somebody. But she knew the Twelve had to die—for Eve’s sanity, Villanelle’s freedom & for them to have any chance at a free life together. So she saved Eve from that burden. Let her feel like she helped by dancing it out at a wedding, shining her light. Steeled herself, just like in S3, and got the job done.

Bc did y’all see her relief when she got back to Eve on the bridge? When it was over? The troubled expression as she watched Eve walk into the wedding? How the only time she smiled was when she came out of the kitchen to listen to Eve give her officiant speech about their relationship, and then she disappeared again—just grimacing during the killing (which was a 1 vs 12 fight without Eve btw, so ofc she couldn’t be clean about it)? Did you see the desperately sad way she kissed Eve at the bottom of the stairs before she sent her off, knowing what she was about to have to put herself through and wanting to soak in that goodness, to remind herself she’s loved somewhere before she went in and did that? How her whole body shakes after the last killing & she only smiles again once the weapon drops from her hand—as she realizes that might be the last time she ever has to do this?

Eve and Villanelle went in opposite, parallel directions over the course of the show, crashing into/embracing each other to finally find that balance and understanding. And hilariously (in the context of Neal’s comments), that journey means if anything, EVE is the one who “enjoys killing” at this point 😂 NOT Villanelle.

I literally don’t understand how any reasonable person even could come to the conclusions Laura Neal did in good faith, much less the goddamn show-runner. But then, she didn’t do it in good faith, did she. She sent the mentally ill queer woman on a quest to purify herself of sin through JESUS for 80% of a season & then SHOT her & threw her in the THAMES, the site of Eve’s acceptance in S3, so that Eve, as the formerly “straight” woman who was in love with her, could have the “relief” of getting her “NORMAL LIFE” back—

How long am I gonna be explaining to people, I wonder:

Villanelle is a compelling and relatable character—and so similar to Catra—& her relationship with Eve heart wrenching to watch because she turned herself into a weapon at a young age so no one could hurt her anymore? (And Catra and Villanelle are both power bottoms, and no, that’s not a joke—it’s character info.)

It’s why her backstory episode with her mom in S3, and the final shot of her crying on the train, are so perfect, for all people’s complaints about S3. And then she grew and changed. And Eve came back. And she let someone hurt her. She let someone in.

Because no, most people don’t have mental health scarring to the degree that Villanelle has. (A lot of that—the spy stuff, the Twelve—can be read as a way to personify a general sense of governmental repression anyway.) But there’s something very real about being a soft-hearted person who forced yourself to become a survivor, scrapping from day to day to find any reason to live, and then finally finding someone who understands you and doesn’t want to hurt you.

And for Eve, it was compelling because she was closeted. All the trappings of her old life—from Nico and their flat full of chickens, to her desk job—were symbolic of repressive, misogynistic, comp-het culture as a whole. Villanelle represented burning all of it down: rebellion, anarchy, honesty, freedom.

And it is absolute crap—not to mention WILDLY homophobic—that it would be anything RESEMBLING a “relief” for her to lose that freedom; to say her queerness and desire for more were a phase, and she’d be happier going back into repression.

It’s crap. And it’s one of the many reasons I have to be a writer.

I will never get over the fact that Laura Neal and other writers made the deliberate choice to kill off Villanelle when both Eve and V live and have a happy ending in the books. It outrages me more than anything else. They based a whole show off of a book series and sure it's fine to change some things but not the fucking ending?! The whole show was about Eve and Villanelle not being able to live without one another and they both went through so much character development. Eve embraced her darkness and V her vulnerablity and soft side. They are finally on one wavelength in season 4. And Laura Neal has the audacity to say Eve lived happily ever after now that V is dead and it's apparently such a relief to her?! Just homophobic. No matter how the writers try to defend it it definitely plays into the 'Bury Your Gays' trope.

For a second here I thought you meant the dance scene in S4, which was nothing new, but VILLANEVE DANCE SCENE IN S3??? That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard. I mean, sure, there were the lines of "We would consume each other before we got old"; "But it sounds kind of nice" BUT they showed all the potential they had in 4x08 so once more LN is contradicting what they clearly showed in the show. The Oscars were held on April 25. It was a bit of a yawner and why would a show set themselves up for an awkward end?? There was a commercial from P&G right before the broadcast that stated, “ Widen the screen so we can widen our view.” Nice sentiment.  Mank had so many noms and only 2 wins. People looking their best to me were Leslie Odom Jr., Glenn Close, Riz Ahmed, LaKeith Stanfield, Colman Domingo, John Batiste, Mia Neal, Questlove (gold crocs and a mask!), Desmond Roe, Travon Free, Trish Summerville, Marlee Matlin, The Lucas Brothers, Andra Day, Carey Mulligan, Amanda Seyfried, Nicolette Robinson, Regina King and Margot Robbie. Laura Dern looked like Big Bird, there were just too many feathers. Tiara Thomas had feathers but they looked great.  Angela Bassett had some power sleeves and Tyer Perry looked like a little boy.  Hooray for Emerald Fennell for her win for original screenplay but not sure about the dress. And Viola Davis?? Dana Murray?? Ashley Fox?? Hmm?? Winners seemed to have trouble getting to the stage. They often refused the steps or the walkway and sort of climbed up the side. I did love the intimate setting and it did remind me of the old clips of years before. Sound of metal and Ma Rainey both won. Tyler Perry and for the first time, an organization, the motion picture and television fund, took home the humanitarian award. I was thrilled to see My Octopus Teacher win for Doc. I loved Crip Camp too, that was a hard category.  The acting winners went in all directions.  Many critics complained that the films were real downers . Nomadland won best picture. Michael Moore put it best I think. Of the films this year, he said, “They force you to look backward with 2021 eyes.”

I still can’t get over the “Villaneve just wouldn’t work” statement. Because no matter how much I keep twisting it in my head I can’t find any reason why (other than Laura Neal being homophobic, terribly heteronormative or with no understanding of love and relationships).

Bc they are bad for each other? No they are not, not anymore. We saw the forgiveness, acceptance and equality already. If something, they make each other better now.

There’s no way Villanelle would be happier killing than with Eve when her whole fucking arc has been about wanting to be loved and be something else than a killer. And there’s no way Eve would be happy in a normal life she wanted to get away from since the beginning. They were soulmates and it pains me that Laura only saw them as problematic frenemies.

Also, It’s incredibly strange from her to say that it wouldn’t work bc they could never be “good” or “normal” when the show has never cared about those things before. So, wtf.

Villaneve aren't bad for each other. I don't want to hear shit from anybody about "they're toxic" because no, sit the fuck down. Eve brought out Villanelle's humanity and made her feel things. The scene from 2x07 where Villanelle tells Eve "I feel things when I'm with you" still makes my heart do somersaults. Villanelle brings out parts of Eve that, as Sandra once put it, were on pause or never fully explored. Anything that Eve did after meeting Villanelle isn't because Villanelle made Eve "bad". Eve was already fucked up. In episode 1, before Eve ever laid eyes on Villanelle, we know that she was obsessed with women killers, stabbed her own leg with a knife, and had fantasized about how she would kill Niko (haven't we all?). They complemented each other. Villanelle introduced a freedom and a vitality that Eve had suppressed in order to live her regular old life at her regular old job with her regular old husband in her regular old house. Villanelle introduced possibility and excitement and yes, danger, but that's because she was an assassin for the Twelve, something that was no longer true by the end of the series. So tell me where the toxic aspects of their relationship were? They were these people already, Villanelle simply allowed Eve to see that she could take agency of herself, while Eve allowed Villanelle to recognize that there was so much more to her than simply being an assassin.

The thing is that no matter what Lauren Seal's fucked up reasons were, THEY LITERALLY DIDN'T MATTER BECAUSE THE SHOW WAS ENDING. All of these things that she supposedly saw or didn't see happening were of no fucking relevance, because IT'S NOTHING THAT ANY OF US WERE EVER GOING TO SEE ON OUR SCREENS. She could've given us an ending that at least allowed possibility, so that we could decide for ourselves what that next step for them might be, whether together or apart. But instead, she let her ideas of things that she couldn't see happening in EPISODES THAT WILL NEVER BE MADE dictate how she formulated her ending. Laura Neal is a cunt

From my understanding showrunners do pick their writers most of the time from my understanding so it her Suzannes fault in that just like it is Laura Neal for S4. Listen Suzanne had one mission this season and it was about V’s family and other storylines. Not the Eve and V relationship until the end.
