Day 20: Laura Jones

This next OC would really enjoy going on a Magic Carpet Ride through Brooklyn if she got the chance! Here's another one of my Punchout OCs; Laura Jones as Jasmine!

I'm 16 years old, born on May 9th

I'm (secretly) bisexual

I have had four exes (Racetrack, looking at you for one of them)

I have many mental issues (but not severe!)

Anxiety

ADHD (not too serious, promise!)

Used to have mild depression, but got help! (We all recover, one way or another)

Insomnia

Used to have an eating disorder (don't ask)

I'm from Santa Fe, New Mexico, but I came to New York in 1888!

I love to draw, play guitar, and hang around with my fellow Newsies! (Don't tell Spot, but I also sneak into Brooklyn but I'm banned. Ssh!)

I have an older brother (by two years) called Max, he's also a Manhattan newsie

Self-portraiture allows me to capture moments of vulnerability and wonder in everyday settings. Sliding doors was painted at the start of a new relationship. I adopted the pose of Pierre Bonnard's wife, Marthe, in his 1932 work The bathroom. The mirror reflected the bedroom of my apartment. This equalised the image plane, allowing me to capture a familiar place - and body - from a different perspective. The small picture of domestic life collides with the big picture of the sublime.

In 2016, Laura Jones undertook an artist residency to study the bleaching of the Great Barrier Reef, leading to her exhibition Bleached. Afterwards, she met acclaimed author and conservationist Tim Winton at an environmental advocacy event.

‘I was amazed by the humility of this great novelist, who has enchanted generations of Australian readers,’ says Jones, a four-time Archibald finalist who is also in this year’s Sulman Prize.

‘Last year, I watched his ABC documentary, Ningaloo Nyinggulu, about the fight to save Ningaloo Reef. It was beautiful and terrifying. In a speech, Tim said the lack of action on climate change hasn’t been challenged enough in the arts. I was stunned to discover a portrait of Tim had never been a finalist in the Archibald Prize. Then I found out why – he was a reluctant subject,’ says Jones.

‘When I flew to Perth for a sitting, the Great Barrier Reef was suffering its fifth mass bleaching event in eight years. Tim was warm and witty. We spoke about the historical relationship between printmaking and political activism. I approached his portrait as if it was a monotype, using thin brushstrokes and letting the paint bleed across the canvas like ink into paper. Dreamy yet direct.’

What I connect with…

I love the colours and gestural strokes in Laura Jones’s work. Her Sulman entry captivated me as soon as I entered the space. The Archibald entry not so much, but both did show up the others around them. So beautiful and light and fresh.

Alfred sits in the kitchen of Wayne Manor, watching tv while catching up on his sewing chores.

TV Announcer: Welcome back to Real Housewives of Gotham! Last week we-

The door bursts open and Bruce enters, walking toward the fridge.

Alfred: Morning, Master Bruce. Would you like me to make you something?

Bruce: Morning, Alfred. No, that's okay. Do you know if we have any of that drink Jason and Tim like? I cannot find it.

Alfred gently puts down his sewing needle: Uh... yes bottom shelf to the right.

Bruce: Thank you!

Bruce leaves the kitchen carrying a box of Capri sun under his arm. Alfred raises an eyebrow knowing full well that Tim and Jason are not home currently.

Before he can question it further, the ring of a doorbell sounds off. Alfred opens the door and is greeted by a Pizza Delivery man holding several giant boxes.

Delivery Guy: Order for Bruce Wayne? 2 Extra Large Pepperoni, 2 Extra Large Plain Cheese, 2 Extra Large Vegetarian, and 1 Extra Large Meat Lovers?

Alfred: Uuuh... yes.

Delivery Guy handing Alfred the pizzas: Tell Mr. Wayne thank you for the tip! Hope you have a good party!

Alfred nods and shuts the door. Confused, he walks to the living room with pizzas in hand. As he draws closer, he hears the sound of music and many voices talking and laughing.

Alfred opens the door. Bruce, Capri sun in hand, stands in the middle of the room talking with a couple of people while the others are admiring the room's decoration. They all freeze as Alfred walks in.

Alfred: Your pizzas, Master Bruce... May I ask who are these people?

Bruce finishes the rest of his Capri sun: Alfred, I would like for you to meet, Asami Sato, Peter Parker, Laura Kinney, Kate Bishop, Mako and Bolin, Fred Jones, and Vi...

Alfred: Bruce, I thought you put a pause on the Robin program?

Bruce: I-

Peter dropping down from the ceiling: I don't mean to interrupt, but can I start serving the pizza? I'm sorry, I just haven't eaten yet today. I gave my last ten bucks to a homeless guy this morning.

Alfred giving Peter the pizzas: Do any of you have parents?

Asami: Mine are dead.

Peter: Dead.

Vi: Dead.

Mako and Bolin: Dead.

Fred: Complicated.

Kate: Also Complicated.

Laura: I'm a clone.

Bruce looks at Alfred with soft eyes and holds out a Capri sun: Come on, Alfred.

Alfred sighs, taking the Capri sun: I'll call the guy and get the tape measure. Let's start with a couple of rules of the house. Rule number 1 no climbing on the ceiling. Rule number 2-
