1. What’s the most embarrassing childhood story you know about your spouse?

Ethan: Don’t tell me you’re going to tell that same story again...

Evelyn: No, the teddy bear story is overused. I know a better one.

Ethan: *confused*

Evelyn: I know that this is Ethan’s most embarrassing story because I heard it straight from his grandma. She said that when he was about 11, she took him to this nice restaurant for lunch, and the waitress asked him what he wanted to eat. She was looking at her menu and didn’t hear him respond, and when she looked up, he was staring down her shirt!

Ethan: *shocked* Good grief Evelyn, I didn’t know she told you that! When did she tell you?!

Evelyn: Don’t worry about that. So, was I right?

Ethan: *mumbles* Yes.

Evelyn: Yes! Okay do me now!

Ethan: *smirking* Do you?

Evelyn: *smacks his arm*

Ethan: *laughing* Okay okay! When Eve was 11, she was a figure skater and according to her, she had a “really hot coach” who was 25. When she had a lesson with him, she was trying to go out of her way to impress him with a new routine, but ended up falling on her face and breaking her nose.

Evelyn: One of the worst injuries I’ve had, but all seriousness aside, I guess you can say that I’ve always had a thing for older men.

2. What did they want to be when they were younger.

Ethan: Eve wanted to be a figure skater until she had a career ending knee injury at 16.

Evelyn: Ethan wanted to be a snazzy detective.

3. What was your spouse’s favourite band on high school?

Evelyn: Ethan was a weird teen and liked Andrea Bocelli.

Ethan: It’s not weird. It’s having good taste. Eve’s favourite was Journey. She’s an old soul.

4. Describe your spouse in high school using memes or/and gifs only.

Evelyn: Ooo I wanna go first!

Ethan: I went to school to learn babe, not play games. Anyway this was you.

Evelyn: *laughing* I swear I wasn’t a gossip. I was just well informed.

5. How old was you spouse when they had their first kiss? Who was it?

Ethan: Eve’s first kiss was this kid named Alex when she was 10.

Evelyn: Ethan’s first was his middle school girlfriend Laura when he was 13.

6. If you two were the same age and had met in college, how would you have met? Would you have liked each other? Dated? Eventually married?

Evelyn: I used to be more shy while I was in school so even if we had classes together I wouldn’t approach him then. Buuut, I used to work at a coffee shop close to the campus in college, so I think Ethan would come and order coffee on a regular basis and I would soon remember that tall, handsome guy’s order. As time goes on and we see each other more often, I’ll start to write cute little notes and draw on his cup and eventually add my number. He’ll call and we’d talk and get to know each other and even with the hecticness of school, we’d get though it together. In that scenario I still do see us getting married.

Ethan: Quite a romantic picture you painted there. I think even if we didn’t meet like that, I would have approached you in school.

Evelyn: Really?

Ethan: Of course! Not only are you beautiful, but you’d be top of the class. How could I not be enamoured with someone so beautiful and intelligent.

7. Who was your spouse’s hero when they were growing up?

Ethan: Eve’s was her dad.

Evelyn: He was, and still is. When I was growing up, we weren’t the richest, but he did everything he could to make sure we were well taken care of and had everything we needed while my mom took care of my two siblings and myself. He’s also always been super supportive of everything that I’ve wanted to do. I’d say Ethan’s was also his dad.

Ethan: True

8. Which of your spouse’s friends is the most attractive?

Evelyn: Tobias

Ethan: Of course you’d say Tobias.

Evelyn: It’s true

Ethan: I don’t see any of your friends like that.

9. Can you name all your spouse’s exes before you?

Ethan: Let’s see... I think your only ex is that Alex Rossi that was your first kiss.

Evelyn: That’s true. We met when we were 8 and we were skating partners until 16 when I had to retire. We fell out of touch when I left for school. Yours are middle school Laura, Kathrine in college, and Harper right?

Ethan: Yes ma’am.

Evelyn: Thanks for joining us for another round of The Newlywed Game hosted by Bree! We can’t wait to play again soon!

Contributor Interview: Gabriel Houck

Bio: Gabriel Houck is originally from New Orleans, and he holds an MFA from the University of Iowa and a PhD in creative writing from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where he is currently a Lecturer in the English Department. His fiction appears in journals such as Western Humanities Review, Glimmer Train, Cimarron Review, The Pinch, and Mid American Review, where his story, “Hero’s Theater,” won the 2014 Sherwood Anderson Fiction Prize. His story, “When the Time Came,” was also selected as a distinguished story in the 2015 edition of The Best American Short Stories, edited by T.C. Boyle. He currently lives and works in Lincoln, Nebraska.

CONTRIBUTOR INTERVIEW QUESTIONS

1. When did you start considering yourself a writer?

I’ve mostly been uncomfortable with “writer” as a title vs. writing as something that I do. I’ve considered myself as a student for most of my life - literally, because I’ve been a student for most of my life, and figuratively in the sense that I think you’re always a student of what you love. Writing is so slippery, though. I didn’t start feeling safe with idea of being a writer until I was publishing essays and stories, when my work lived out there in the world and not just in my own head.

At the same time, when I was a student, it felt important to be treated as a writer, to assume that role and own it, even if this was also a bit of magical thinking. The label is kind of an act of fiction. It’s a story well tell ourselves so that can have permission to tell a story.

2. What’s one of your favorite things about your chosen genre? (or, your work’s blur of genre)

I like this question. I studied nonfiction at my MFA, and during that time I wrote essays that mined the questions and characters of my life. Eventually I ran into my limits. I found out that I wasn’t a very good researcher, nor a very good journalist, and I was running out of confidence in the “I” behind the essay as something that felt authentically like my own voice.

 I started writing fiction in earnest only a few years ago - once I was underway in my PhD program - because it offered ways to re-purpose all the truths of my lived experience into something that wasn’t shackled to the “I”. I’ve spent my life trying on different selves, and my short stories became opportunities for versions of these selves to live on their own terms. That’s not unique, I know, but I haven’t written a character that doesn’t have parts of me in them, nor have I written a story that isn’t partly a collage of lives that I’ve known. And in my case, the fractions of myself that show up in my characters help their stories maybe say truer things than they otherwise might - like fictional essays.    

3. Who/what are main influences for your current writing?

Joan Didion, for sure. Tobias Wolff would also be up there – “Old School” is one of my favorite books of all time - and maybe Haruki Murakami too. I’ve recently been reading collections by Jess Walter, Ben Fountain, Adam Wilson, Steve Almond, Laura van den Berg, Karen Russel, and Alan Heathcock, all of which have shaped my writing.

4. If you could pick one song/album as the soundtrack to your piece (the one we’re publishing) what would it be?

I’m not sure - that seems so relative to the person reading it.  There was a gray-space between love and despair in the story for me, so if the reader brings music that embodies this in some way, maybe that’s fitting.

5. What are you looking forward to reading this coming year? Are there any emerging artists you’re particularly jazzed about?

I’m so embarrassed that I don’t have a list ready for this – forgive me.

6. If you could collaborate with any other artist (past included) on a new project, who would it be and why?

Erik Larsen. He’s a research machine, and good at all the things at which I am not when it comes to the history detective-work that places a narrative into an authoritative, compelling and nuanced context. I’d give anything for that talent, and it would be amazing to work alongside someone who could bring those things to my work.
