Art Meme Thingy
i was tagged by the AMAZING @thecandlesticksfromlesmis which is delightful as I didn’t realise i was really on your radar and I think you’re hella cool? And yes, I did draw my avatar. I am really amused to get tagged in on art things because...I draw so seldom, and until my recent tumblr rumblings, hadn’t done since I did an art class in high school. So--I am very flattered!
1. one insecurity Is anything I do interesting/original enough that anyone even wants to see it?
2. Two fears - my work is never quite what I WANT it to be -that people will make fun of my stuff or tell me it’s crap (which has happened but I was a CHILD and you’d think by now I might have moved past that a little? it’s ridiculous)
3. Three (Art) Turn-Ons
-LIGHT I LOVE LIGHT -when one person in a scene is looking right at you as if they are totally aware they are in a work of art and are being looked at, while around them everyone else is just doing their thing. -feeling like i am looking into a real life.
4. Four Life Fandom/Art Goals - become someone who creates things more regularly and not just now and then when i hammer out a few minutes because I really should try and remind people i have creative interests - Actually make some progress on my original non-fandom work, because I am in love with it as an idea but “real life” has been derailing me badly. - find a fantastic group of people like my tumblr pals who are actually closer to me so that i can occasionally geek out freely in the flesh and not just online. - finally do a play or musical again, because my back to school/multiple moves in a short time/total career change has kept me from that and I miss it BADLY (going from someone who works in theatre/film and did multiple projects in a year to not being involved in anything for three years straight is painful to my soul)
5. Five Things I Like Drawing?? - People. ALWAYS PEOPLE
-people surrounded by things that tell me stuff about who they are - Fantasy creatures. not as much now, but I used to adore this--elves, fairies, centaurs. - interesting expressions and movements--although I am very bad at getting them to be accurate
- pretty details--things like halos, or the hems of dresses.
6. Six Weaknesses
- i’m a fucking perfectionist and it stresses me out LET THINGS BE WHAT THEY ARE (I’m keeping this because UGH ME TOOO_ - i put too much value into what other people think of my work, like if it makes me happy that should be enough (are we the same person? really) - I want things to be good right away and have hard time making myself practice things I am not already good at. - I have such a hard time settling down and focusing to work on stuff.
(if ppl are assholes i refuse to work with them, and i feel like in this industry that’s a weakness? even if they are super super good at what they do I just can’t tolerate dickheads and i rarely ever give them a second chance which is unfair--an aside: GOOD FOR YOU! I would rather work with a director like that any day of the week and if more people were like that the entire performing arts industry would be way less full of toxic disgusting bullshit PLEASE NEVER CHANGE)
- I have too many interests and i am one of those people who is blessed/cursed with being at least okay at a lot of different kinds of artistic things, but it makes me slightly--I obsess about dance for a year, and then singing for six months, and then spend two weeks drawing every damn day, and then i take a class in stage combat and get nutty about that, and then I write all night for three weeks straight, and so on and so on.And then i decide i need to make a perfect croissant. It’s interesting, but it isn’t necessarily great for following through an anything. -i hate having to try and make any sort of a profit off of my creative stuff? because it makes me super anxious and totally blocks me. it’s why i stopped acting professionally. so i am trying to learn to just have hobbies and it turns out i am bad at not taking everything painfully seriously
7. Seven things I love
(this is less about my specific work and more about content in general) -COLLABORATION (i love i love i love) -people that reblog my shit and write in the tags talking specifically to me knowing that i’m creeping on the reblogs -seeing peoples work that is in styles I could never hope to replicate and would never have come up with -Cosplay Cosplay Cosplay why do i have no money or sewing skills or other friends closely with whom I can Cosplay!!!
-everyone’s different interpretations of characters. even if it doesn’t match my own imaginings i still think it’s cool and interesting and so much fun -wild aus and crazily spiralling fandom jokes. -finding new things to love based on the things my mutuals are doing and loving that I haven’t heard of (like I just finished reading The Cruel Prince because of @montparnassee and @petalproufaerie did a wicked cosplay for it? And I’m pretty sure the idea for my current WIP wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for @mysunfreckle’s fairytale aus, and @adorablecrab‘s art that references some of it. - aesthetic posts that have nothing to do with my fandoms but fill me with so much joy
8. Tag Eight people
I don’t really tag people in this stuff? because I would love to see what anyone who has the time and wants to do this has to say, but i hate feeling like I’m maybe leaving people out. So if you want to join, join! Please! and tag me so i see it and get to know you better!

19 and 20 for the fanfic asks please my dear
19. What’s a fanfiction trope that you haven’t written yet, but you could imagine/are planning to write?
This is more an AU than a trope I suppose, and while normally modern AUs aren’t my thing, I do have Thoughts on a Phantom modern AU that I think could play with really interesting dark/thriller elements. Feel like I’m so attached to Girl Raoul now that I would want to do it with her, and I think it would be REALLY fun to play with. This would probably also involve impromptu bed-sharing, which I have not written before.
20. What’s a fanfiction trope that you couldn’t imagine writing?
I cannot see myself writing a coffee shop AU, largely because the emotional stakes of those aren’t enough to interest me? I also would not write a royalty AU because I just am deeply, deeply tired of the focus on royalty in pretty much anything, no matter how many Philippa Gregory novels I might have read.

I was tagged by @kcrabb88 to describe myself using only pics from my camera roll. Only one picture of my actual self but I am that asshole who shows up with a wedding cake at a potluck—was my final project at pastry school.
I actually think a lot of my mutuals have already been tagged in this silliness but in case they haven’t been: @fixaidea @definitelygrantaire @fishandchipsandvinegar if you haven’t already and feel like it

I was tagged by @kcrabb88, thank you! :) :)
name: Kelly
star sign: Sagittarius
height: 5′4 if i stand like it’s a ballet class!
the first 5 songs that play when you put itunes on shuffle?
1)Casino, Run Lola Run Soundtrack
2)Ill Be Waiting/Goodbye, The Last Five Years OBC
3) People Like Us, The Wild Party OBC
4) Marvellous, Dragonette
5) Nobody’s Baby Now, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
have you ever had a poem or a song written about you? A friend of mine wrote a poem about the character I was being an an ongoing role-play game in high school...does that count?
when was the last time you played guitar? HAHAHAHA nope. I’m planning to start learning fiddle next year though, because i’d really like to be able to play something
who’s your celebrity crush? I don’t really have one...but Sam Heugan is pretty hot, and I have always had a bit of a thing for Rachel Weisz.
what’s a sound you hate and a sound you love? Hate:Squealing subway trains. But really, anything that I can’t control, I have some auditory issues. Love: wind through trees, waves on the beach.
do you believe in ghosts? I briefly lived in a house with two other girls where something invisible would occasionally try and trip us on the stairs--but I’m still trying to figure out if there’s an explanation..? I don’t necessarily believe, but I am not playing around with that.
how about aliens? I figure they likely exist or have in the past, or will in the future, but no way we’re ever going to meet them.
do you drive? NOPE never learned, and now it freaks me out. I’m a career cyclist.
what was the last book you read? Last novel I read was Kushiel’s Chosen, by Jacqueline Carey, I’m currently reading Brooklyn Follies by Paul Auster
what’s the worst injury you ever had? I guess that would be the time i broke three toes and sprained my foot playing soccer barefoot LIKE AN IDIOT
do you have any obsessions right now? The big one is wrapping my head around moving--I’m going to live in Paris from November to February! And then moving to the province I grew up in, halfway across the country from here, so that eats up a lot of my brain space! But...Les Mis, as usual. French pastry. Chickens (I want to get some) Tiny houses, i think they’re cool. Drafting an outline for an utterly batshit fan fic idea that leapt on me this week.
do you try to hold grudges against people who’ve done you wrong? I’m not really good at it. But there is the rare person who has irredeemably screwed me or someone i love over that i manage to keep a little bit of a grudge smouldering for.

Redemption arcs, 100% are one of your tropes
I LOVE a redemption/atonement arc! Which is partly driven by my love of enemy-to-grumpy-uncle who hangs out with the crew, sometimes..

Fanfic assumption: You have a Romantic streak a mile wide
What would ever make you assume THAT??? (You are CORRECT). :D :D :D

I assume you have a sweet tooth, and moreover that you prefer sweet to salty treats. which is random, but there you go, was the first thing that came to mind.
The huge bag of mellocreme pumpkins and candy corn says you are CORRECT. I actually don’t like to mix my sweet and salty, either, like trail mix is Not For Me.

I’m curious about 11, 14, AND 21 for the writing asks
11. What do you envy in other writers?
I really envy the way some other writers can really capture something immense and important in a shorter amount of words. Like that ONE LINE some people can write and it just makes you go OH. My big flaw as a writer is I over write, and I don’t mean in that my stuff is long (though it...is, often) but in that sometimes I over explain. I worry I’m not being clear enough and so lose subtlety. So I envy people who can put something Big succinctly.
Also I envy people’s snappy dialogue, I have to think about it a lot to get good banter down! I’m better at emotional dialogue.
14. At what point in writing do you come up with a title?
...at the last second, usually.
Not entirely true, but either a title comes to me like a lightning strike, or I struggle over it until the damn thing is already completely written. Titles are hard, I really pour over them cause I want them to be Poetic.
21. What other medium do you think your story would work well as? (film, webcomic, animated series?)
I think a lot of my stuff has a kind of cinematic quality to it, so film! Or a long-form TV show, that would be better given the length of a lot of my stuff. I daydream a lot about my pirate books being turned into like, a high-budget Netflix or HBO show. I think of scenes like movie trailers in my head, so this was probably the most natural answer.

Tragic backstory: you snapped after being told to avoid flowery prose and adverbs too many times. Joined a pirate crew.
Ahahaha seems quite likely, honestly!!! It’s like, I don’t need 5 pages of description about a rose bush, Nathaniel Hawthorne, but I like some nice flowery prose!! And sometimes adverbs are okay! Honestly, that kind of writing advice that says some things are The Law and You Must Never Do, is enough to turn me into a villain.

Oh god. 1 for the fanfic ask, please
1. What was your first fic and could you stand to reread it today?
Ahahahaha it was something in the Rurouni Kenshin anime fandom. I THINK it was called “A Party for Kenshin” and I uh. I in fact DID re-read it a couple of years ago and you know, it’s not The Worst Thing probably, but it…wasn’t great. It was Fairly Bad from what I recall. But it was the VERY first fic I ever wrote at like, 15! Shows something about how writing is something you can absolutely and totally improve upon, with enough practice. I would not prefer to re-read it again.

It's a combination of incredibly rich characterisation with complex relationships. Also your sense of humour just slays me
Thank youuuuuu! Ha, I like to hear about humor, because my stuff can get so angsty that I love a good banter scene and sometimes wonder if it comes across, so this is nice!

Pumpkin pie for the desert asks! 🥧
What were your interests as a child?
Oh gosh, I was such an intense and nerdy child who loved a lot of things, so I’ll just name a few!
I loved reading, particularly historical things, so I read a lot of the epistolary Dear America novels, and American Girl books. I got VERY into the Tudors for a while. I played the heck out of all the Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego games, and I think there was one that placed her at different points in history. I had all those kids versions of classic novels? Loved those.
I did ballet for a long time, so I loved that. And horseback riding (I started when I was 9), and competitive swimming (I loved being in the pool the ocean ANY WATER so this was a natural choice). I did gymnastics for a short bit. I loved playing pretend so I had the costume trunk that was the envy of all my friends, complete with not just Disney princess costumes, but also the princes. I of course knew every Disney movie soundtrack by heart.
I am not a visual artist by any stretch, but I went through a phase where I loved drawing landscapes with oil paints and such, I had a sketchbook I carried around. I had a magic phase, too. I lived in the country for a lot of my childhood, and my grandmother had a lot of land, so I would go exploring in the woods barefoot a lot, though of course, not after dark, cause monsters, probably. I got a lot of ticks that way, oops.
I just…liked a lot of things as a kid! :D

love this ridiculous website? hehehe ;)
You know it’s funny, because I see lots of complaints about this website, and like, I DEF have my own (their weird changes and lack of user-friendliness, their lack of getting rid of spam blogs, the occasional hive mind that I find frustrating) but my general experience here has been good! And I have made sooooo many friends!!! So like, whatever Tumblr’s faults, the friends I’ve made via this website (including a group of people I see regularly here in DC) are priceless. So worth any irritation.
