La torta

La madre dijo que los gurises no comen torta, entonces, en vez de batir huevos y hacer un bizcochuelo de vainilla, agarró una caja de zapatos y la decoró. Julián sopló las velitas de sus ocho años. “En una torta de mampostería”, susurraron otras madres entre sí.

El nene salió en la foto y siguió corriendo por todo el club y la madre sonrió y volvió a poner unos puflitos en los platos, sobre el tablón forrado de papel afiche.

Unos años después, la mamá de Julián se enfermó. A veces, algunas noches, él soñaba con una textura. Una textura de algo desconocido, que lo sobresaltaba, con angustia. Se despertaba perturbado y sentía los dedos pegajosos.

La vida siguió como siguen las cosas, la madre se murió, Julián tuvo un hijo con una compañera del trabajo. Para el primer año de su gurí, quiso hacer la torta. Compró las cosas que le parecía que podía llevar y con cada huevo que cascó para el bizcochuelo, lloró como un niño:

–No sabés –le decía al bebé, dormido en el cochecito– qué ricas le salían las tortas a tu abuela.

Café Latorta (en Chamberí)- Café con leche

This place has been showing up all over my Instagram feed, so I had to come here as soon as I could. M and I had already eaten breakfast, but I made sure that it was a light one so that we could fill ourselves up with this treat: la torta. The torta, in this case, is a very dense and flat cake, and they put different flavors on top as a glaze/icing. We ordered the dulce de leche and dark chocolate, and we loved it. Though the cake was flat, and the slice a bit large, it was super filling. Really, you can only eat one slice, and for me, 3/4 of a slice. 

Since they had just opened, the owners, a couple, were in the back kitchen making the big orders. You could order a pie (because it’s more like a pizza pie than a cake) for around 20-25€. They must’ve been quite popular because at 10AM on a Sunday, they had already 3 pies out and ready to be picked up. We were impressed. The café con leche that we ordered was a perfect complement to the torta, and the store’s ambiance felt very West Village, NYC.
