Human Arts - "Big Sur Highway" Copa Mundial Muzique (A Selection of Afro-Caribbean and Latin Sounds in Celebration of the World Cup '98) Song released in 1997. Compilation released in 1998. Deep House / Latin House

The UK duo of Ashley Beedle and Darren House are probably more known as both the Ballistic Brothers and X-Press-2, but they also used the name Human Arts as well to release a solitary 12-inch in 1997, with this song, "Big Sur Highway," serving as its title track.

This tune, which is one of my absolute favorite pieces of both deep and Latin house, samples liberally from Carlos Santana's own 1980 song, "Golden Hours," from his Latin jazz-rock album, The Swing of Delight, which he recorded with Miles Davis' band, under his sometimes-used Devadip moniker. There's both shorter and longer lengths of this song already on YouTube, but none are of this specific length.

Nick Holder - "Da Sambafrique" Mundial Muzique (A Selection of Modern Afro-Caribbean, Latin, and Brazilian Rhythms) Song released in 1998. Compilation released in 1999. Deep House / Latin House

Such a lovely, loungey groove from Canadian house legend Nick Holder here. Great blend of melodies between the soothing electric piano and then the splashier sax that comes in later a couple different times. Dig the bottle-clinking percussion too.

Of course, Holder didn't come up with this whole song on his own, though. It's actually a cover of a Latin jazz fusion tune from 1983 by the dynamic Dave Matthews (NO, NOT THAT DAVE MATTHEWS!).

"Da Sambafrique" was already on YouTube too, but not this specific edit as it appears on the tremendous Mundial Muzique comp from what was probably Chicago's premier deep house label of the 90s, Guidance Recordings.
