Daddy Yankee - Gasolina 2004
"Gasolina" was released as the lead single from Puerto Rican rapper Daddy Yankee's 2004 album Barrio Fino in the US in October 2004. By November 6, WSKQ-FM in New York City reported "Gasolina" in their top 10 rotation, and WRTO-FM in Florida said the song was their number one most-played track. It entered the US Billboard Hot 100 chart a week later, rising to number 32 in January 2005. "Gasolina" was a hit in North America and the Caribbean, gaining Daddy Yankee popularity among Latino mainstream music fans. In July 2005, "Gasolina" was released as a single in the UK, eventually earning a Silver certification in March 2019. Australia saw the single enter their charts in late January 2006 during their summer season, rising to number 12. "Gasolina" was the first reggaeton song to be nominated for the Latin Grammy Award for Record of the Year. Puerto Rican reggaeton singer Glory sings the line "dame más gasolina", although she is not credited.
In 2015, the song was ranked number nine on the "50 Greatest Latin Songs of All Time" list according to Billboard. In 2018, it was ranked number 38 on Rolling Stone's 50 Greatest Latin Pop Songs. In 2017, it was included on Billboard's "12 Best Dancehall & Reggaeton Choruses of the 21st Century" at number eight. In 2021, it was ranked number 50 on Rolling Stone's "500 Greatest Songs of All Time", and a year later it was ranked at the first place on their 2022 "100 Greatest Reggaeton Songs of All Time" list. In 2023, "Gasolina" was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the United States National Recording Registry as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant." The song was used in the 2023 movie Fast X / Fast & Furious 10.

Released in Europe on October 23, 2006, and the United States on October 24, 2006,[1] through Reprise Records, it was produced by the band with Rob Cavallo, known for having produced multiple albums for the Goo Goo Dolls and Green Day. It is a rock opera and concept album centered on a dying man with cancer known as "The Patient". The limited edition boxed set also earned My Chemical Romance a nomination at the 2008 Grammy Awards. Four singles were released from the album: "Welcome to the Black Parade", "Famous Last Words", "I Don't Love You", and "Teenagers".
My Chemical Romance began The Black Parade World Tour on February 22, 2007, in the Verizon Wireless Arena in Manchester, New Hampshire. The tour featured 138 performances worldwide, as well as several festival and condensed shows. The tour was the longest and most internationally comprehensive headlining tour the band played, featuring three legs in North America, two legs in Europe, and one in Asia, Australia, and Latin America.
The song "Dead!" appears in the Xbox 360 version of Guitar Hero II, and the three songs "Teenagers," "Famous Last Words" and "This Is How I Disappear" were once available as downloadable content. The Black Parade has sold three million copies in the United States as of 2016, and four million worldwide. The record was reissued as The Black Parade/Living with Ghosts on September 23, 2016, in celebration of the tenth anniversary of the album's release. In 2020, Rolling Stone ranked the album number 361 in their updated "500 Greatest Albums of All Time" list.[2]
Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge (often shortened to Three Cheers or Revenge)[1] is the second studio album by American rock band My Chemical Romance, released on June 8, 2004 by Reprise Records.[2][3] With this album, the band produced a cleaner sound than that of their 2002 debut I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love.[4] It was the band's first release to feature rhythm guitarist Frank Iero on all tracks, as well as the final release to feature drummer Matt Pelissier, who would later be replaced by Bob Bryar.[5]
The album was a success for both the band and the label.[6] The record produced four singles—"I'm Not Okay (I Promise)", "Helena", "The Ghost of You", and in the United Kingdom, "Thank You for the Venom".[4] It was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) less than a year after its release,[3] and has sold over three million copies in the United States.[6]
Musically, Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge has been described as emo,[7][8] alternative rock,[8] pop punk,[9] post-hardcore,[10] punk rock,[11] and pop rock.[12] While I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love was considered "a particularly strident entry in that shifty genre of bands tortuously slamming together elements of emo, hardcore, and even metal",[13] Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge "both showcased their songwriting skills and gave them much-deserved attention".[4] Moving away from the "screamo parts"[14] and "the more complicated structures"[15] of their first record in favor of a sound that "skirts the line between pop punk and edgy, theatrical, emo"[4] while being "strongly influenced by hardcore punk",[15] Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge has been variously compared to The Misfits,[16] AFI,[13] and Thursday.[13]
Lead singer Gerard Way has referred to the first single "I'm Not Okay (I Promise)" as a "self help pop song"[17] while also being called "a surging piece of emo-pop with a hook as ridiculously catchy as it was ridiculous"[18] and a "moving anthem for the young and depressed"[19] by AllMusic and Rolling Stone respectively. This single went on to be nominated for the Kerrang! award for best single[20] and reached number 86 on the US Billboard Hot 100.[21]
The album opener "Helena" has been referred to as an "album highlight and smash hit". Gerard has claimed that the song "shaped what the album is about" and "revealed their dark side" in comparison to the first single.[17] Its lyrics mourn the loss of Gerard and Mikey's grandmother,[17] Elena Lee Rush, and was their first entry into the top 40.[21]

R.I.P. Sérgio Mendes
Tumblr media
Sérgio Mendes, who brought Brazilian music to mainstream listeners, died Thursday at age 83 from long COVID. Mendes became a force in pop during the '60s when he debuted his Brasil '66 band. The single "Mas Que Nada" written by Jorge Ben, made him known and was the start of his sound fertile, with bossa nova rhythms, jazz, and funk entering the landscape of popular music. Antonio Carlos Jobim, another legendary musician from Brazil, served as his mentor, and Herb Alpert signed him to the A&M record label, which was then brand-new. The reception to his eighth studio album, Herb Alpert Presents Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66, was so warm that the album achieved platinum status. Mendes re-recorded "Mas Que Nada" with The Black Eyed Peas in 2006 for his Timeless album, which had collaborations with Stevie Wonder, Q-Tip, John Legend, Erykah Badu, and India.Arie, and more. BEP founder will.i.am produced the Timeless album.
Mendes became popular with R&B audiences when he recorded the Stevie Wonder-penned "The Real Thing" for his 1977 album, Sergio Mendes and the New Brasil '77. Vanessa Williams also recorded "The Real Thing" for her album of the same name. Mendes recorded 55 albums over his career and he won a Grammy in 1992 for Best World Music for the album Brasileiro. In 2005, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Latin Grammys. HBO released the documentary, Sergio Mendes in the Key of Joy, in 2020, the same year his last album, In the Key of Joy, came out. His last performances were in 2023 for audiences in Barcelona, Paris, and London.

Song 1: "Beautiful Liar" - Beyoncé feat. Shakira
Song Introduction:
“Beautiful Liar” is a song by Beyoncé and Shakira, released in 2006 as the only single from the deluxe edition of Beyoncé's album, B'Day. The mid-tempo track combines Shakira's Latin and Arabic styles with Beyoncé's contemporary hip-hop and R&B influences. Thematically, the song revolves around female empowerment, with the protagonists singing about being charmed by the same man but choosing not to compete for his attention. The collaboration received positive reviews from critics, earning Grammy and Latin Grammy nominations and winning an Ivor Novello Award. Commercially, it peaked at number three on the US Billboard Hot 100 and reached number one in several European countries. The music video, directed by Jake Nava won the MTV Video Music Award for Most Earthshattering Collaboration in 2007. The success of “Beautiful Liar” contributed to its inclusion in Beyoncé's world tour setlist, The Beyoncé Experience, in 2007.

Stuart Hall, “What is this ‘Black’ in Black Popular Culture?”
Stuart Hall, in his essay, “What is this “Black” in Black Popular Culture?” describes the idea of the difference in the struggle over cultural hegemony– ruling maintained through ideological or cultural means– found within the positive margins of postmodern culture. More specifically, Hall argues that a mix of original African heritage and the experiences of the black diaspora, has given rise to black culture, often seen through style, music, and the arts. To connect to “Beautiful Liar,” Hall’s main argument in the essay is centered around the idea that popular culture is “where we discover and play with the identifications of ourselves, where we are imagined, where we are represented, not only to the audiences out there who do not get the message but to ourselves for the first time,” (113). I find this argument to be apparent in Beyoncé’s music video “Beautiful Liar” featuring Shakira because the spontaneity in the choreography and the collaborative spirit between the two singers contribute to the video’s exploration of black popular culture. We see Beyoncé exploring the identification of herself in the video through the lyrics, where she shows the power of women staying united, as well as through her appearance and choice of music, where she shows her culture. All of this aligns with Hall’s argument that I quoted above, in that Beyoncé is playing with her identification, how she is imagined and represented.
Tumblr media
Henry Louis Gates, “The Blackness of Blackness: A Critique of the Sign and the Signifying Monkey”
Henry Louis Gates’ essay and the music video for “Beautiful Liar” by Beyoncé featuring Shakira can be related in the context of exploring African-American cultural expression and identity. In his essay, Gates discusses the concept of signifyin(g), a literary form rooted in African American traditions, involving repetition, cultural actions, and imitation that shape blackness in literature. I found this to be similar to the cultural expressions seen in the music video, where Beyoncé, who is African American, and Shakira, who is Latina, draw on their respective cultural backgrounds to create a mix and unique visual and musical experience. This can be seen through Beyoncé’s incorporation of hip-hop and more contemporary dance elements and Shakira through her inclusion of belly dancing. This mixing and merging of cultural elements in the video aligns with Gates’ concept of signifying as both artists symbolically express and signify their cultural identities through their music and performances. They use these cultural elements not only to entertain but also to symbolize their identities and celebrate the richness of their respective cultural backgrounds. And to go a step further, we see throughout the video, and specifically closer to the end of the video, the two singers appear to be mirroring one another, and sharing these aspects of their cultures. All in all, the music video for "Beautiful Liar" can be seen as a manifestation of the concept of signifyin(g), where cultural identities are expressed and signified through artistic collaboration and performance.

Song 2: "Formation" - Beyoncé
Song Introduction:
"Formation" is a celebrated R&B song by Beyoncé from her album Lemonade. Released in 2016, it’s known for its cultural celebration and references to Beyoncé’s Southern black identity. Critics praised its lyrics, production, and vocal performance, naming it the top song of 2016 and the decade by various publications. The song's music video, which premiered alongside the song, is directed by Melina Matsoukas, and showcases black pride and Southern culture, earning critical acclaim and being hailed as one of the greatest music videos of all time by Rolling Stone. Along with that, Beyoncé performed this at the Superbowl Halftime show, where Entertainment Tonight interviewed her afterward, Beyoncé saying "I wanted people to feel proud and have love for themselves." However, the song sparked controversies, with conservative commentators accusing Beyoncé of anti-police and anti-American messaging, leading to boycotts and protests. Despite the controversies, "Formation" became a protest anthem for movements like Black Lives Matter and the Women's March and has been studied at educational institutions for its cultural significance.
Music Video: "Formation" - Beyoncé
youtube
Stuart Hall, “What is this ‘Black’ in Black Popular Culture?”
In the music video, we see a celebration and representation of black culture, incorporating various cultural elements, historical references, and symbolic imagery. In this music video, Beyoncé utilizes her platform to assert her identity and embrace her cultural heritage, challenging dominant narratives and stereotypes about being black. The music video shows diverse representations, from scenes depicting New Orleans culture and traditions to more powerful shots referencing historical events like Hurricane Katrina and the Black Lives Matter movements.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These representations emphasize the range and richness of black experiences, echoing Hall’s idea of cultural formations stemming from the convergence of multiple traditions of dominant and subordinate positions. Along with that, “Formation” is a place where Beyoncé explores and asserts her identity, both externally to the audience and, importantly, internally, to herself. This directly connects with Hall’s idea that popular culture is where individuals discover and play with identifications of themselves. Overall, I see Beyoncé’s “Formation” music video aligning with Stuart Hall’s concepts by presenting a multifaceted representation of black culture and engaging with historical and contemporary aspects while actively contributing and changing the current dialogue and portrayal of being black in popular culture.
Tumblr media
Henry Louis Gates, “The Blackness of Blackness: A Critique of the Sign and the Signifying Monkey”
Henry Louis Gates, in his essay “The Blackness of Blackness: A Critique of the Sign and the Signifying Monkey,” focuses on the concept of signifyin(g), which refers to a verbal strategy within African American culture that involves the indirect expression and exploitation of the symbolic meanings of words. It involves a practice of linguistic interaction that leads to a gap between the word’s literal meaning and the interpretation of the word. I found that in Beyoncé’s music video. “Formation” the concept of signifying can be interpreted throughout. The video is filled with rich symbols and references that signify aspects of black culture. It shows New Orleans culture, as well as more historical events/movements like Hurricane Katrina and the BLM movement. Along with that, we see through the lyrics and visuals that show Beyoncé's pride in her black heritage and roots, asserting her identity boldly; there are lyrics or clips of soul food, black dance groups, black church community, black women's hairstyles, et cetera. All of this is an example of Gates’ idea of signifying because what we see are just the signs, but with exploration, these hold a much deeper meaning.
Discussion Questions:
Hall says that popular media “is a theater of popular desires, a theater of popular fantasies. It is where we discover and play with the identifications of ourselves, where we are imagined, where we are represented, not only to the audiences out there who do not get the message, but to ourselves for the first time.” Do you agree with this? If so, where do you see this being true in popular media (TV, movie, music, et cetera.) today? If not, what do you think popular media is?
Henry Louis Gates talks about “signifyin(g),” a verbal strategy in African American culture. Can you identify ways people use indirect expressions or cultural references in today's media or conversations to convey deeper meanings or messages?
In what ways does contemporary popular culture provide platforms for marginalized racial identities to be represented and explored, aligning with Stuart Hall’s discussion on the exploration of identities? Can you think of instances in recent media where underrepresented racial groups showcase their identities and experiences?

she hasn't been since 2006!?!?!?! does she have something against the grammys or something wth queen 😩
Realistically speaking, I think it’s been a combination of things. For starters, she’s only released 2 full on English albums since that year (She Wolf & Self titled). During SW she attended the VMA’s in 2009 & my guess is that she was done with the promo by the time the Grammy’s came along. Then we all know her story once she had her family. In 2014 she performed at the Billboards to promote Empire, but that was the most she’s done as far as awards shows since then. In that particular year, she quickly got pregnant so that album promo quickly finished. She attended the Latin Grammys in 2011 when they honored her as person of the year, but hasn’t made an appearance there ever since either. I don’t think she has an issue with going to award shows, she just doesn’t make the effort if she doesn’t absolutely have to. And in any case, she hasn’t had many excuses for going. Like, she’s a musician, she’s been nominated, and she’d always have the opportunity at attending them, but hasn’t bothered because of the distance & because she hasn’t done a lot of promo throughout the years. I’m hoping this era, she attends at least one award show, it’s been way too long 😭.

Todo Cambió (English: Everything Changed) is the debut studio album recorded by Mexican pop rock band Camila. It was released by Sony BMG Norte on May 9, 2006. The album was mainly written and composed by the band members: Samo, Pablo Hurtado, and Mario Domm, and includes a blend of Spanish rock and Latin pop.
It was released in Mexico on April 18, 2006, where it was eventually certified three-times platinum with sales over 300,000 units. In the United States, the release date was set on May 9, 2006 and the album received a platinum certification by the Latin field of the Recording Industry Association of America on July 24, 2007. In Spain the album was released on May 13, 2008.
This album yielded eight singles, including: "Abrázame", "Coleccionista de Canciones", "Todo Cambió", "Sin Tu Amor", "Sólo Para Tí", "Yo Quiero", "Me Da Igual" and "Perderte de Nuevo". For the album's release in Spain, "Todo Cambió" was chosen as the lead single.
About the album composing and recording, the band declared: "We came out from a garage, the living room and the closet, not to compete, only to show little fragments of our lives through the music we make." While producing Reyli Barba's album, Mario Domm asked Samo to participate on backing vocals, and on those recording sessions decided to make a band. Pablo Hurtado had to make an audition for the gig of guitar player, and after that, they wrote the songs for the album. Regarding the song style and inspiration, Mario Domm wanted to let people hear the music they were creating in their living rooms and to express how much joy they had performing together. Samo (a former church performer) found his inspiration watching television, singing along with other performers, stating: "Everything I learned is on these lyrics." Pablo Hurtado, the youngest member of the band, dedicates his lyrics to "weekend love affairs" and about the track "Me Da Igual" he says: "I wrote it on a very hard moment of my life, it is about a love that never happened."
The title track has been the recipient of many awards and nominations, including a Latin Grammy Award nomination for Song of the Year in 2007 and the Best Song award at the Premios Lo Nuestro 2008, where the band also won in the Group or Duo of the year field. For the Premios Juventud of 2008 the group received the following nominations: Red Hot Artist, Catchiest Tune ("Todo Cambió"), CD to die for (Todo Cambió: Special Edition), and won for Best Ballad ("Todo Cambió") and Favorite Pop Star. At the 2007 Latin Billboard Music Awards, the band won for Duo or Group of the Year and Latin Pop Airplay Song of the Year ("Todo Cambió"). The album was also nominated for Latin Album of the Year. Camila also won two awards at Los Premios MTV Latinoamérica for Best New Artist - North and Breakthrough Artist.
