King Charles’s Prince Trust to help tackle unemployment in Nigeria
The Prince’s Trust International, a non-profit organisation established by King Charles III of England, has been launched in Nigeria to address the urgent issue of youth unemployment on a global scale. The launch, which took place at a reception in Lagos on Wednesday, was attended by high-profile functionaries, including the Deputy British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Ben Llewellyn-Jones. Speaking at the launch, Llewellyn-Jones said the PTI’s launch in Nigeria would bridge the existing skills gap, giving more young people would have access to quality training that would make them more employable. He said, “This is the launch of the Prince’s Trust International initiative in Nigeria to help train young people and get them ready for work to bridge the gap that we have with respect to youth unemployment and youth underemployment here in Nigeria. “So, it is a really positive initiative. His Royal Highness is the President of the Prince’s Trust. The initiative is trying to reach more countries, Nigeria being the latest. The PTI is a charity. It is in line with the UK government’s ambition in Nigeria to help young people get jobs, get the proper training and the proper skills. “It is about training. It depends on the kinds of roles young people want to take up. It is about providing them with modern workplace skills, modern workplace etiquette and the ways in which they can approach things, helping them with some of the softer skills and some of the harder skills as well.” The Chief Executive Officer of Prince’s Trust International, Will Straw, said the initiative was billed to commence in the aftermath of King Charles’ visit to Nigeria in 2018 but was delayed due to the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic. According to him, in the last 18 months, the trust has been helping young people gain the skills they need for the world of work. “In 2018, he visited Nigeria, and as we heard this evening, he asked government officials, he asked business leaders whether his trust could support employment efforts here in Nigeria and in Ghana. The answer was yes. The expertise that we have could help with local efforts. So, we began with the support of our Africa advisory board, which includes great business figures in Nigeria like Atedo Peterside and Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede to explore how we can set this programme up.” On her part, PTI’s trustee and former Vice President of the World Bank, Arunma Oteh, said that 60 per cent of Nigeria’s population is youth; hence, any investment in young people was worthwhile and sustainable for development. Oteh, who was also a former Director-General of Nigeria’s Securities and Exchange Commission, expressed excitement at the possibility the programme portends for young Nigerians, employers and the country. According to her, Nigerian youths are hardworking, creative, and resilient. She added that the launch of the PTI in Nigeria would catalyse more changes and development in the country. Latin American democracy is in poor but surprisingly stable health
The pandemic has fuelled indifference more than authoritarianism
[Image description: illustration of a voting ballox box with low water and a fish swimming in it.]
LESS THAN half of Latin Americans are committed democrats and a growing number are indifferent towards their country’s political regime. A large majority remain deeply dissatisfied with the way their democracies work in practice and they place little trust in their institutions or in each other. They are opposed to military government but a growing number are prepared to accept elected caudillos (strongmen). And they continue to have more trust in the United States than China.
These are some of the findings of the latest Latinobarómetro poll, taken in 18 countries and published exclusively in The Economist. Because the poll has been taken regularly since 1995 it does a good job of showing how attitudes in the region are evolving. The latest poll reflects views after the first seven months or so of the pandemic, which complicated the fieldwork. Face-to-face interviews were conducted in 17 countries between October and December 2020. That was not possible in Argentina, because of a prolonged lockdown. Online interviews were conducted there in May 2021.
The pandemic has hit Latin America disproportionately hard: with 8% of the world’s population it has suffered around 32% of officially recorded deaths. Despite this shock, the poll did not show a drastic change in political attitudes compared with the previous one in 2018. “I expected a fall in support for democracy,” says Marta Lagos, Latinobarómetro’s director. That this didn’t happen may reflect “the sense of solidarity” the pandemic generated, at least in its early months.
But the broad trend, expressed in recent protests in several countries, comes over loud and clear. Compared with the late-1990s, when the transition from dictatorship to democracy was still fresh in many countries, support for democracy in the region has waned (see chart 1). Only 49% say that democracy is their preferred form of government. Support for authoritarian government is low, at 13%. But, worryingly, more than a quarter of respondents say they don’t care whether or not their country is democratic, a figure that has risen from 16% in 2010. Ask the question in a different, Churchillian, way and 63% think that while democracy may have problems it is the best system, down from a peak of 79% in 2013.
Support for democracy in Brazil and Mexico, Latin America’s two giants, is well below the regional average. Another worrying trend concerns the profile of the typical democrat in Latin America. Younger people and especially those of the upper classes tend to be indifferent towards the political regime (see chart 3). That points to the disdain of elites for democracy.

Evaluation: That is all the time how the Trump presidency was going to finish That is precisely what Donald Trump is doing within the closing weeks of his presidency — as he savages longtime allies, pardons criminals solely due to their loyalty to him and threatens to rob the nation of much-needed Covid-19 aid cash simply because he can. “That is rotten to the core,” Nebraska Republican Sen. Ben Sasse stated Wednesday night time within the wake of Trump’s newest spherical of pardons that included his former marketing campaign chairman Paul Manafort and his political svengali Roger Stone. That’s, in fact, true. However, what Trump is doing in his final days can be totally predictable. This was all the time how this story was going to finish. Anybody expressing shock and amazement merely hasn’t been paying consideration. From the earliest days of his presidency, Trump made clear that he would use the workplace to which he had been elected to easily additional the work of his lifetime: Rewarding himself (and his mates) whereas punishing his enemies. Trump did not act in a different way in workplace — as he stated he would if and when he was elected — as a result of he did not (and would not) see the presidency any in a different way than every other job he is executed in his life; it was merely a higher-profile approach to make himself extra well-known and extra highly effective whereas persevering with to hunt vengeance on the ever-growing listing of people that have wronged him ultimately, form or type through the years. He lacked any sense that being president was about greater than him, that there was, in idea, the necessity to look out for the collective good of the nation. It is why Trump would say issues like “my generals” or “my navy” with none sense of why that may be flawed. And why he spent his complete time period clashing along with his attorneys generals — whether or not it was Jeff Periods or Invoice Barr — over their unwillingness to make use of the Division of Justice as his personal private police power. And why he has used his presidential pardoning energy much less as a approach of righting wrongs and extra as a approach of wronging rights — granting clemency to folks, like former Reps. Chris Collins and Duncan Hunter, who clearly and knowingly violated the legislation. And why he’s refusing to signal a invoice that may not solely present $900 billion in Covid-19 stimulus cash but in addition maintain the federal authorities operating due to his private pique with Republican members of Congress who refuse to help his fever dream that he gained the 2020 election. What’s maybe most outstanding about all of this, effectively, rottenness, is how none of it’s ever sufficient for Trump. Regardless of how a lot he will get, he all the time needs extra. Regardless of how loyal his sycophants are, it is by no means loyal sufficient. Take Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp. Kemp ran unapologetically as a Trump acolyte in 2018 — profitable the praises of the President within the course of. Kemp took his governing cues from Trump too — significantly on Covid-19 as he waited (and waited) to subject a stay-at-home order within the spring to placate the President. Did not matter. None of it. As a result of when Kemp refused to assist Trump’s extra-legal (at greatest) efforts to overturn President-elect Joe Biden’s victory within the Peach State, Trump savaged him. Repeatedly. And urged a main problem in opposition to him in 2022. “Governor Kemp (@BrianKempGA) is down 18 factors in a latest ballot,” tweeted Trump earlier this month. “Do not consider it, have to be extra!” Then there’s the case of Senate Majority Chief Mitch McConnell, whose ardent help of the President’s agenda led to Trump’s single-most lasting accomplishment: The affirmation of three new Supreme Court docket justices in addition to a whole bunch of federal judges in decrease courts across the nation. Trump beloved McConnell proper up till he did not. The Kentucky Republican’s offense? Acknowledging, after the Electoral Faculty vote earlier this month, that Biden was, in actual fact, going to be president. Which quantities to McConnell saying, after months of staring immediately at a blue sky that the sky is, in actual fact, blue. Trump, by means of retaliation, despatched a slide to McConnell’s Republican Senate colleagues suggesting {that a} supportive tweet and an automatic telephone name he did for the Majority Chief have been why McConnell had been reelected in November. “Sadly, Mitch forgot,” was written on the prime of the slide. “He was the primary one off the ship.” (McConnell’s victory had zero to do with Trump’s tweet or robocall.) He activates everybody. Nobody can ever be loyal sufficient. Nobody can do all the things he asks of them. As a result of what he asks, in lots of instances, is both unlawful or a dereliction of responsibility. That lifestyle — and politics — inevitably ends the way in which this presidency is drawing to a detailed: Trump bunkered in — both on the White Home or Mar-a-Lago — with the final remaining dead-enders who will indulge his more and more wild fantasies about staying in workplace. And utilizing the remaining powers of the presidency for purely private satisfaction — whether or not in rewarding these previous few loyalists who’ve traded dignity for the proximity to energy or punishing his one-time allies who, he believes, have double-crossed him. It is a unhappy picture: A president backed right into a nook by his personal selfishness and bitterness, remoted from all however a number of — and never even essentially trusting them to, in the end, have his again. It is also a scary second: Trump retains appreciable powers as president and now has solely his private whims to steer how and whether or not he makes use of them. Anybody who spent 5 minutes watching how Trump has lived his life — out and in of the White Home — might, in fact, have seen all of this coming. That is the way it was all the time going to finish for Trump — and the nation. Which makes it all of the extra damning that so many Republicans have supported him for thus lengthy. This Country Recently Became Africa’s Largest Economy, Now It’s Too Big for Businesses to Ignore
Nigeria has overtaken South Africa as Africa’s largest economy. And with over 200 million people, it is the largest market in the continent, its population nearly twice the size of Ethiopia (110 million) or Egypt (102 million). Yet among many companies, there is a great deal of nervousness around investing in Nigeria. One business development officer of a large company told me recently: “We’re not in Nigeria; one of our guys heard you can’t go there.” This kind of second hand hearsay is a risky way to make proper business decisions. When firms make what we refer to as accidental decisions—those based on media reports or anecdotal evidence—it is hard to effectively quantify and manage risks. Nigeria is definitely a challenging place to operate. But ultimately, the nation is too important to ignore.
Investment by the United States in Nigeria is Growing
Foreign direct investment stock from the United States into Nigeria was $5.8 billion in 2017, up 32.8 percent since 2016, according to theU.S. Trade Representative. However, a significant chunk of U.S. FDI in Nigeria and the continent goes into the resources sector.
The Commercial and Investment Dialogue with the Nigerian government, originally recommended by President Obama’s President’s Advisory Council on Doing Business in Africa, is now in full force, and earlier this year, the U.S. Commercial Service hosted the USA Trade Fair in Lagos, Nigeria—attended by more than 4,000 delegates. Many of America’s biggest firms were out in force, as were smaller names in the agribusiness, aviation, consumer, energy, industrials, and security sectors. Now, other countries are starting to catch America’s lead—notably the Chinese.
China’s Africa Strategy Presents a Formidable Challenge
China is using all of its political, industrial, and financial might to build deep connections in Africa. Engagement is strategic, multilateral, and well-organized under the biennial Forum on China-Africa Cooperation and the Belt and Road Initiative. Chinese construction firms are building road, rail, port, communications, mining, and energy projects funded by loans from The Export-Import Bank of China or state-owned banks, using Chinese machinery, and with Chinese operators often operating the asset after completion.
Source: UNCTAD World Investment Report 2018 Chinese business development teams visit Africa’s toughest neighborhoods to establish relationships—often long before most American executives have even considered an investment in the country in question. Headlines trumpet Chinese “investment” in Africa, but much of this is actually lending, rather than equity investment. International experience is helping Chinese firms improve their product quality, service delivery, and technological capabilities every day, making them ever-stronger global competitors. The key to China’s success on the continent is that designing “good enough” equipment for the price their customers will pay. A Chinese-made truck starter will fail after a fraction of the starts a North American truck operator considers normal—but it will also cost a fraction of the price. Likewise, a Chinese-designed smartphone will work on local networks, enjoy long battery life, run the right apps—and come at an affordable price. Despite recent political hiccups, Huawei is the dominant supplier of communications and networking equipment on the continent. Africans benefit from the firm’s low-cost vendor financing, ultra-advanced technology, and turnkey service for modern network installations.
In Nigeria, Demand Exceeds Supply
Nigeria is famous for its power shortages. With only about 5GW of grid power available (on a good day), it’s no surprise that there is an estimated 20GW of captive, backup, and household-level power installed by the private sector. But this isn’t just a risk. It’s also a business opportunity. In 2011, Nigeria privatized the power generation and distribution portions of its electricity industry. Performance is well below expectations so far, thanks to gas supply shortages, below-contract tariffs, and poor cash collection. The opportunity? Most manufacturers run their own captive power plants—and they’re investing in advanced gas-fired turbines, high-efficiency production equipment, and renewable energy capacity. Households need prepaid electric meters, energy-efficient appliances, and more cost-effective standby generators. The continent is becoming a big beneficiary of China’s large-scale investment in renewables—which are now vastly cheaper than they were just a decade ago. In Nigeria, solar, wind, and mini-hydro are rapidly filling in the gaps where grid power is unavailable. Local micro- or mini-grids can deliver power to light homes, charge phones, refrigerate medicines, preserve harvested produce, and bring the internet to schools. In Nigeria, as elsewhere in Africa, the financial services sector is undergoing a transformation. Mobile money accounts are increasingly popular, led by M-PESA in Kenya. Mobile money has boosted economic activity and brought millions into the financial services sector. African financial-technology entrepreneurs are testing innovative—and potentially disruptive—services. Where regulations allow, entrepreneurs and mobile operators are introducing low-cost mobile payment, investment, insurance, savings, loans, and cross-border money transfer services using the latest technology.
According to the World Bank, small- and medium-sized enterprises create an estimated 4 of every 5 new jobs in emerging markets, yet traditional corporate banks are still focused on serving large corporate customers.
Can You Create Long-Term Shareholder Value Without Africa?
This isn’t a simple question, but it has to be asked as part of any long-term growth and risk analysis. Public capital markets are relentless in pushing for short-term earnings and returns. Set aside today’s imperative to meet quarterly earnings expectations, ignore for a minute the potential for activists to disrupt your investment programs because they don’t see an immediate ROI on your long-term strategic investments. The long-term survival of a business depends on its ability to adapt, grow, and participate in the global economy of the future—and countries like Nigeria are part of this story. Trump's latest Twitter target swings back, and hits him where it hurts
President Trump has reached a new low with a viciously sexist personal attack directed at MSNBC's Morning Joe's female host Mika Brzezinski.
SEE ALSO: Trump’s Tech Week did not make America great
But this time he got the dressing-down he deserved — with a swinging shot hitting just below the belt.
During the habitual early morning tweetstorm, Trump lashed out at Brzezinski and her co-host Joe Scarborough with a frankly astonishing (even for him) sequence:
I heard poorly rated @Morning_Joe speaks badly of me (don't watch anymore). Then how come low I.Q. Crazy Mika, along with Psycho Joe, came..
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 29, 2017
...to Mar-a-Lago 3 nights in a row around New Year's Eve, and insisted on joining me. She was bleeding badly from a face-lift. I said no!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 29, 2017
But Brzezinski was having none of it, and calmly but surely hit back with a not-so-veiled reference to Trump's teeny-tiny hands (and consequently his teeny-tiny penis):
pic.twitter.com/8YhzcCUwM1
— Mika Brzezinski (@morningmika) June 29, 2017
If this is not a *giant* mic drop, we don't know what is...
In a statement, an MSNBC spokesperson responded to Trump's tweets saying: "It's a sad day for America when the president spends his time bullying, lying and spewing petty personal attacks instead of doing his job."
It’s a sad day for America when the president spends his time bullying, lying and spewing petty personal attacks instead of doing his job.
— MSNBCPR (@MSNBCPR) June 29, 2017
Mark Kornblau, the head of PR for NBC News and MSNBC, also chipped in, saying:
Never imagined a day when I would think to myself, "it is beneath my dignity to respond to the President of the United States."
— Mark Kornblau (@MarkKornblau) June 29, 2017
Meanwhile, the blowback against Trump's latest rant is growing, even from his own party.
Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina) said the president's tweet was "beneath the office" and represents "what is wrong with American politics, not the greatness of America":
Mr. President, your tweet was beneath the office and represents what is wrong with American politics, not the greatness of America.
— Lindsey Graham (@LindseyGrahamSC) June 29, 2017
Another Republican, Lynn Jenkins, who serve U.S. Representative for Kansas's 2nd congressional district, said:
This is not okay. As a female in politics I am often criticized for my looks. We should be working to empower women. https://t.co/sV6WDE0EUD
— Lynn Jenkins (@RepLynnJenkins) June 29, 2017
Republican Senator Ben Sasse, from the state of Nebraska, is basically begging Trump to stop being such a tool on Twitter:
Please just stop. This isn't normal and it's beneath the dignity of your office.
