Bangladesh mourns nearly 200 dead as protests continue
Protesters against a quota system for government jobs in Bangladesh on Friday resumed mass protests that earlier killed more than 200 people and are holding a nationwide “March for Justice,” ABC News reports.
More than 2,000 protesters gathered in parts of the capital Dhaka, some shouting “Down with the autocrat” and demanding justice for victims, while police circled around them.
Police clashed with dozens of students in Dhaka’s Uttara area, while security personnel fired tear gas and stun grenades to disperse stone-throwing demonstrators. It was the latest round of demonstrations against Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, whose government has been rocked by student protests that have so far shown no signs of subsiding.
Analysts say what began as a peaceful demonstration by students against the quota system by which government jobs are allocated has turned into a bloody and unusual uprising against Hasina, whose 15-year rule over the country is now being tested as never before.
How it all started
Since violence erupted on July 15, the protests have turned into a major crisis for the 76-year-old Hasina, who in January retained power for a fourth consecutive term in an election boycotted by her main opponents, making the outcome virtually certain even before the votes were counted.
Authorities have switched off the internet and imposed a “shoot-to-kill” curfew to curb violent demonstrations. Schools and universities remain closed.
The deaths of demonstrators have shaken Bangladesh, with videos of violent clashes between security forces and students, with police firing bullets and tear gas shells, appearing on social media. In one incident, a six-year-old girl was shot dead while playing on a rooftop as her father tried to shield her from gunfire.
It all started when students, frustrated by the lack of good jobs, demanded the abolition of the quota system for government jobs, which they believe is discriminatory. Under this system, 30 per cent of the jobs were reserved for relatives of veterans who had fought in Bangladesh’s war of independence against Pakistan in 1971. They argued that this benefited supporters of Hasina, whose Awami League party led the independence movement, and demanded that the system be replaced by a merit-based system.
In response, the Supreme Court reduced the quota for veterans to 5 per cent. However, the anger and protests have not subsided. Experts say it reflects a much larger popular rage against the government, economic discontent and ultimately a revolt against Hasina herself, despite the comfort her development programme brings to the people. Michael Kugelman, director of the South Asia Institute at the Wilson Center in Washington, said:
“There have been plenty of protests during the Awami League’s regime over the last 15 years, but nothing as large, long, and violent as this one.”
Right place at the right time
This time, he says, there was a perfect storm: an unpopular quota system, a furious government response that turned deadly, contained anger against the state and growing economic stress on most citizens. According to Kugelman, the government’s oft-used tactic of quelling protests with force and some negotiation this time around has only “fanned the protests, not extinguished them.”
The clamour has also highlighted the extent of economic discontent in Bangladesh, once lauded for its successful growth. Like other countries, it suffered after a pandemic and war in Ukraine drove up commodity prices. Today, exports have plummeted, foreign exchange reserves are drying up, as are remittances. The slowing economy has highlighted the lack of quality jobs for young graduates, who are increasingly flocking to government jobs that are more stable and lucrative.
For many students, this was the reason they took to the streets, but the government’s violent response kept them there, even when the quota system was scaled back. Student, teacher and civil society groups say they are now fighting for justice for those killed, while Hasina’s political opponents are demanding her resignation.
Mohammad Rakib Uddin, an 18-year-old college student, was protesting along with hundreds of others when bullets pierced his thigh. Uddin said he was wearing his college uniform and survived after friends took him to hospital. He also added:
“They have brutally and inhumanely attacked us. We are general students — we don’t have weapons, bombs or even a stick in our hands. We were protesting by just holding flags. Many who were with me might have died as they were shot at their waists and heads. By the grace of the Almighty, I am alive.”
However, the government said opposition activists and their armed cohorts joined the students to attack security personnel and government offices.
The turmoil continues
The violence has mostly subsided and normalcy is slowly returning to the country. Curfews have been relaxed, internet has been restored, and banks and offices have opened their doors. But there is still turmoil around Hasina, prompting international outcry from the UN and the US.
Her critics say the past few weeks of violent unrest are the result of her authoritarian nature and lust for control, no matter the cost. For years, her political opponents have accused her of anti-democratic behaviour, with her government jailing thousands of them. International human rights groups accused her of using security forces and courts to suppress dissent and opposition, which the government denied.
Still, Hasina has resorted to accusing the two main opposition parties that backed the students of inciting violence. On Thursday, her government banned one of them, “Jamaat-e-Islami” its student wing and other associated organisations, a move that could escalate tensions again. However, Kugelman does not believe there is an immediate threat to her political survival. He noted:
“But she has incurred soaring reputational costs and faces unprecedented political vulnerability. That could come back to haunt her if there are fresh waves of anti-government protests in the coming weeks or months.”

Why are Western leaders so eager to go to war with nuclear-armed Russia and China? It’s about depopulation, stupid
With A.I. and robots, Israeli historian and WEF mouthpiece asks: ‘What do we need so many humans for?’
Israeli historian and World Economic Forum adviser Yuval Noah Harari is back in the public eye, making the Forum’s case for a depopulated world.
Harari doesn’t come right out and say, let’s kill off half or more of the human beings on the planet. No, he’s much more subtle and cagey in the way he approaches the subject. He backs into it.
Listen carefully to the philosophy of the most dangerous organization on the planet that most Americans have never heard of, the World Economic Forum, and it’s chief philosophical adviser, Yuval Harari.
Elitist WEF mouthpieces like Harari must have a seething hatred for the human race. Perhaps someone should remind Harari that he is also human, and in desperate need of a more human worldview. Instead of technocracy and its depopulation agenda, perhaps Harari should set his eyes on Jesus Christ and what He teaches about the value of human life.
The philosophy you heard espoused in the above video is not some fringe ideology. It is the philosophy of nearly every government in the Western NATO alliance, the same alliance now angling for war with Russia, China, Iran and others. The WEF also has the allegiance of many globalist U.S. governors, from both blue and red states, who have traveled to Switzerland over the years to pander to Klaus Schwab, Harari, and the rest of the Davos death cult. Governors Brian Kemp of Georgia, Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan, and JB Pritzker of Illinois attended the WEF’s 2023 summit earlier this year. Eleven members of Congress also checked in at Davos this year along with Senators Joe Manchin of West Virginia, Chris Coons of Delaware, and Krysten Synema of Arizona. Billionaire business leaders from all industries joined the party.
The most represented countries at the 2023 WEF summit, not including the host Switzerland, were the U.S. (27.2 percent of all attendees) and the U.K. (9.1 percent), followed by Germany (4.3 percent).
Today’s leaders in Western governments and businesses — incestuously enmeshed in public-private partnerships — are obsessed with “net zero carbon emissions” and a worship of technology, especially artificial intelligence and quantum computing (Patrick Wood expounds on this in his latest article here). They are desperately looking for ways to eliminate large swaths of the very humans they have always disdained and now no longer need. Eliminating carbon will cause mass die-offs in the years to come. Plants require carbon. Humans and livestock emit carbon. “Net zero” will bring famine and starvation to the world.
But they can’t wait on climate hysteria to do its job. If they can use the deep-seated hatreds ingrained in various geopolitical hotspots — Russia-Ukraine, China-Taiwan, Serbia-Kosovo, India-Pakistan, and Israel-Gaza — to accomplish their depopulation goals, they will not pass on the opportunity. In each one of these flashpoints, you see almost no effort to negotiate a peaceful resolution. The dogs are out of the doghouse and they are circling the wagons, salivating for human blood.
In the eyes of the Obamas, Bidens, Bushes, Clintons, Lindsey Graham, Mitch McConnell, Mike Pence, Mike Pompeo, Nikki Haley, Justin Trudeau, Emanuel Macron, Olaf Scholz, Klaus Schwab, King Charles and the rest of the Davos death cult, the more bloody and destructive the coming World War III, the better. They crave it like a vampire in need of a fresh vein. They cannot wait to get the killing started.
Unless these psychopaths are somehow miraculously removed from power, the U.S. and its allies will engage in another world war, and it will likely kill more people than World Wars I and II combined. The technology has advanced so much since the 1940s that these monsters are able to be much more efficient in their eradication of human life. On the other side of this coming calamitous event, they plan to usher in their new digital reset, eliminating all cash, fossil fuels, and freedom.
And it doesn’t have to be so. America faces no threat from abroad. The only threat we face is from inside our borders, where sleeper cells have been allowed to infiltrate by globalist traitors in our government supporting disastrous immigration policies for decades.
Let us pray that our new Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson, will be a positive force for change in Washington. He can do nothing alone, but this is the first good news I’ve had to report out of Washington in years, and, God willing, it can be a first step toward the full exposure and removal of the blood-thirsty globalist neocon war-hawks who currently rule the roost.

2022 - Afghanistan ... while the world looks away.
youtube
The Taliban in Afghanistan has further clamped down on human rights in the country. In the latest blow, the Taliban's supreme leader has ordered judges to fully enforce Sharia or Islamic Law. It is an edict that could see the return of public floggings, executions and stonings for certain crimes. Women especially could be at the receiving end of many of these punishments. During their previous rule in the mid-nineties, the Taliban routinely stoned women for the crime of adultery. Last week, the group banned women from entering parks, gyms and public baths. The ban adds to a slew of curtailments to freedom Afghan women already face, as the Taliban ratchets up restrictions on public life after its return to power in August 2021. Since the chaotic withdrawal of NATO forces paved the way for the Taliban's comeback last year, Afghanistan's new hardline rulers have deprived girls of getting a secondary education. The group made its U-turn on indications it would open all girls' high schools in March. Taliban authorities have also suppressed activists who have protested for women's rights to education, work and freedom, and there has been an increase in murders of women that go unpunished. The group has also told women they should not leave the home without a male relative and must cover their faces.
youtube
Ever since the Taliban came to power, the rights of women and girls in Afghanistan have continuously shrinked. The chance that most teenage girls will be able to return to school is dwindling by the day. Under increasing economic pressure, some parents have had to marry off their daughters - often to men much older than their age.
youtube
At the onset of the second winter under Taliban rule, Afghan families face a grim choice between warming their homes or eating. But many can't afford either, as an increase in malnutrition and pneumonia cases among children indicates.
youtube
Afghanistan's Taliban rulers won't allow women to join their cabinet, but they have no qualms meeting a woman cabinet minister from another Islamic country. Pakistan's deputy foreign minister Hina Rabbani Khar was in Kabul earlier in the week to meet her opposite number in the Taliban. The Taliban happy to greet her at the airport and then sit across the table from her. An Afghan woman doing the same would be unthinkable. Among other things, Taliban rule has seen most Afghan women prevented from going back to their jobs and girls prevented from returning to secondary school. Women human rights activists have been arrested and tortured. Parwana Nijrabi spent 24 days in jail after being arrested for participating in a women's rights protest in Kabul in mid-January this year. She's now in Germany as a refugee and spoke to DW News about her experience in prison.
youtube
Three major aid groups have suspended their operations in Afghanistan, saying they can't work without their female staff. This follows an order by the country's Taliban government telling all humanitarian organizations to stop employing women. The ban comes just days after the group barred women from attending universities.

DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) — Bangladesh has been gripped by violence this week after relentless clashes between student protesters, security officials and pro-government student activists over a quota system for government jobs.
Protest organizers say they are imposing “a complete shutdown” across Bangladesh on Thursday, except for essential services. This comes after several major universities in the country agreed to shut their doors indefinitely until tensions ease.
Here’s what we know:
What’s happened so far?
The protests, which have drawn tens of thousands out on the streets, began late last month but tensions escalated on Monday when student activists at Dhaka University, the country’s largest, clashed with police and counter-protesters backed by the ruling Awami League. At least 100 people were injured in the aftermath.
The next day, as violence continued to roil campuses across Bangladesh, six people were killed. More clashes were also reported on Wednesday and Thursday and paramilitary forces were deployed to patrol the streets of major cities. Media reports said at least 19 more people died on Thursday.
In response, major universities said they will close until the situation is resolved in order to protect students.
The protesters say they will continue to demonstrate but are open to discussions with the government. More violence took place on Thursday in Dhaka and elsewhere in the country as police fired tear gas at protesters, according to police officials and local television.
Why are they protesting?
At the heart of the demonstrations is a quota system that reserves up to 30% of government jobs for family members of veterans who fought in Bangladesh’s 1971 war of independence against Pakistan.
Protesters want to abolish this system, which they say is discriminatory and benefits supporters of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League party, which led the independence movement. They want it replaced with a system that’s based on merit.
Even though job opportunities have grown in some parts of the private sector, many people prefer government jobs because they are seen as more stable and lucrative. But there aren’t enough to go around — each year, some 400,000 graduates compete for around 3,000 jobs in the civil service exam.
Under the quota system, government jobs are also reserved for women, disabled people and members of ethnic minorities, but students have mainly protested against jobs reserved for veterans’ families.
What does the government say?
Hasina has defended the quota system, saying that veterans deserve the highest respect for their contributions in the war regardless of their political affiliation.
Her government has also accused the main opposition parties, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and the right wing Jamaat-e-Islami party, of fueling chaos. The BNP has backed the students’ calls for shutdown on Thursday.
On Wednesday, authorities also raided the headquarters of the BNP and arrested several activists from the party’s student wing.
The clashes come months after Hasina maintained power in an election that was boycotted by opposition parties and saw opposition members jailed ahead of the polls.
Why are the students protesting now?
This isn’t the first time there’s been uproar over this issue. In 2018, Hasina’s government halted the quotas after mass student protests.
However, the High Court nullified that decision last month and reinstated the quotas after relatives of the 1971 veterans filed petitions, sparking the latest round of protests. The Supreme Court suspended that decision and promised to rule on the issue on Aug. 7. Despite this, the protests have persisted.
“I am requesting all to wait with patience until the verdict is delivered,” Hasina said in a televised address Wednesday evening. “I believe our students will get justice from the apex court. They will not be disappointed.”
What could happen next?
The furore has also highlighted cracks in Bangladesh’s governance and economy following the pandemic and global upheaval of the wars in Ukraine and Gaza and reflect a lack of good quality jobs available for young graduates.
“The reason behind such huge participation is that many students go through the bitter experience of not finding the jobs they deserve after completing their education,” wrote Anu Muhammad, a former economics professor and analyst, in the Dhaka-based Daily Star newspaper. “In addition, rampant corruption and irregularities in government job recruitment exams and selection processes have created immense frustration and anger.”
“The country’s economy shows growth, but jobs are not being created,” he wrote.
Hasnat Abdullah, a protest coordinator, said the students want to return to classes but will do so once their demands are met.
On Thursday afternoon, Bangladesh’s Law Minister Anisul Huq said that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina asked him to sit with the protesters for a dialogue, and he was ready to sit down on Thursday if protesters were willing.
