Kedarnath Yatra is one of the most sacred treks which takes you through the beautiful Himalayan landscapes and villages, to the temple that is 3583 meters above sea level in the hills of Uttarakhand in Rudraprayag district.
This trek is among one of the sacred shrines of Hinduism known as “The Char Dham Yatra”, and starts from Gaurikund and is about 16 km long with good accommodations, and proper food facilities.
This sacred dham opens in March and then closes in October. In this blog, we will get to know what preparations must be done before visiting, along with the history of mythological secrets.
Kedarnath Mythological Significance
Kedarnath is believed to be one of the sacred places associated with the Hindu God Shiva. The temple is said to be 1200 years old and one among the 12 Jyotirlinga in India, The temple was built by the Pandavas at the time when they won Mahabharata when they were advised by Krishna to worship lord shiva here to
clear their sins.
However the history of the temple is obscured in the blanket history but it is said that the great sage Shankaracharya (Adi Shankaracharya), restored and established the new structure in the 8th century CE. He spent major chunks of his life here and even he took his last breath here.
The Structure is very beautifully built by craving and cutting the large stones and heavy Slabs. Here, it has been customary to honor and show respect for the idol of Adi Shankaracharya. To ensure its safety for future visits, this Samadhi is being reconstructed in a subterranean chamber following the destructive flash floods of 2013.
Travelling Guide
So the best time to travel to Kedarnath is either in the early rainy season from May to June or in early winter from September to October. This 16 km long trek starts from Gaurikund and can take up to 1-2 days to return if you want to trek or else you can book a helicopter that will averagely cost you around INR 7,000 to INR 10,000 per person (one side) which may vary from time slots.
Although Kedarnath is situated at a high altitude they don’t have a wide variety of regional food but then also, you can serve your tastebuds with local foods like Aloo Keema, Pulao and khichdi, Tandoori rotis and parathas and the most tempting Dal.
There are a few things that you must keep in mind while traveling to Kedarnath.
