Superman (1978)

OH I LOVED THIS!! This truly sold the idea of Superman to me, I think. Clark Kent is so loveable in all of his guises and his dynamic with Lois is so compelling. I'm gonna be fr, the entire opening I was a little bored but then the minute Christopher Reeve was on screen, I was hooked. I find it kind of amusing how annoyed Lois is by Clark at first. And the fact that his disguise is so perfect becuase the disguise isn't the glasses, it's everything about Clark. My favourite scene is probably the scene in Lois' apartment where he so seamlessly switches between the two personas, it is a masterclass in acting.

Superman II (1980)

ANOTHER BANGER!!! The main thing for me is Clois, I need to eat them. Clark loves Lois so much that he needs her to know the real him and she can't know him unless she knows that he is both Clark Kent and Superman because his real self lies somewhere in between. And the bittersweetness of giving up his powers for her, only to find that he's not the same without him and the world still needs Superman. It breaks my heart everytime. And also I love seeing Superman get beat up

Superman III (1983)

No. Just no. I did not enjoy watching this one and I am a proud enjoyer of bad movies. Idk, it just made me mad. They wrote out Lois at the first opportunity just to introduce an entirely different potential love interest we don't care about? And there's absolutely no consequences from the ending of Superman II. The one thing I will give it is that the fake Kryptonite influencing Superman to act against his morals was a good idea. But then that just makes it even more frustrating to watch bcus they don't do much with it, what they actually do with it is confusing to watch (the junkyard fight??? What was that???) and once he's back to normal, it's like nothing happened. There's no impact on his reputation or anything? Ugh. But yeah, this could have been so much better.

Superman IV: The Quest For Peace (1987)

Okay so....I actually kinda enjoyed this. Like yeah, it's kinda shit but it was entertainingly shit. Like the tonal whiplash between Lois and Clark having a normal conversation only for Clark to jump off a building and for Lois to assume he's suicidal?? I know we were probably supposed to take it seriously but the switch was so jarring it actually had me crying with laughter. And what do you mean the villain is a wierd clone of Superman with Lex Luthor's voice that can photosynthesise??? That's just so silly I can't help but love it. And also, as a whump enjoyer, I just love Clark pathetically wasting away in his apartment all pale and feverish because I am a normal and well adjusted individual.

Fleischer Studio Cartoons (1941-3)

Okay I know I said MAWS was next but a friend of mine lent me a DVD with these bcus she's heard me talking nonstop about Superman and I wanted to watch them ASAP to get the DVD back to her. I'm lumping them all together bcus I don't have much to say about each one. Pretty formulaic bcus it's a kid's cartoon from the 40s and each episode is 8 mins apiece. Still, entertaining and I have a soft spot for old animation. There were some small character moments I quite liked, like Lois mentioning that Clark scares easy and Clark always thinking about any crime that could happen at any moment in a given area. Also I find it amusing that this version of Clois DO NOT get along unless Clark is Superman

My Adventures With Superman - S1 E1-4 (2023)

I SEE WHY Y'ALL ARE INSANE ABOUT THIS SHOW!!! Oh Clark is the puppy dog of all time, golden retriever boyfriend material. I also like that Lois and Clark are interns instead of fully fledged reporters right off the bat. I think it'll give a new feel to Lois being such a successful journalist if we see the struggle of how she got there. Also CLOIS!! They're so cute in this. Episodes 3 and 4 have me foaming at the mouth about them, Lois fixing his blazer for him and they're opening up to eachother??? Adorable. Initially, I did wish her dynamic with Superman had developed more before she began to put 2 and 2 together but I realise that's probably my Donnerverse movie bias showing, not everything has to be like the 1978 movies. I'm excited to see where this goes.

OKAY SO I THINK I'M GONNA THROW MYSELF INTO THE ABYSS ACTUALLY!!!! "I'm a weapon". Just that line fucked me up so bad, he's always been so scared of hurting those around him and now every single fear he's held is being reinforced. He's so desperate to help that he'll put himself at risk again and again, going so far as to give his own life to save the world. But still, he thinks his only purpose is destruction. Also the amount of whump inspiration I'm getting from this show is crazy, Superman is just so whumpable to me. I like that he gets thrown around and beat up regularly in this show, even if he's fine afterwards. And the times when he isn't? ough.....I LOVE THIS SHOW SO BAD, 10/10, I NEED TO INJECT IT INTO MY BLOODSTREAM

OH MY GOD.....I'm gonna be fr, I think I prefer s1 but I'm not entirely sure yet. But my god this was brilliant too. I quite literally gasped out loud at the Lex Luthor reveal and was overheard and asked if I was okay. And I just love Clark reaching out to find other like him, to not be alone anymore. I do hope they do a little more with the distrust of Superman next series, I think it's an interesting plot thread that isn't being used to its full potential so far. And Clois are cute as ever.

weekly recap: week 09 [24.02.25 - 02.03.25]

featuring pic of the last text i read before my italki lesson last week, which the puhekieli there was kicking my ass, but:

there has been no studying this week, but loads of inmerssion!! i've been in Finland for the whole week, and still have a couple days left here, which makes me extremely happy (and dreading leaving sm)

first the good news: i passed the Hygieniapassi test!!! i was quite nervous about it, more about finding the right spot and understanding instructions etc than the actual test, but still pretty happy about it. Makes me feel like I'm making progress torwards my goal :)

then, about finnish itself: interactions-wise I'm still in my "moi, en tarvi kiitos, kiitos" era when i'm in stores, and besides that my boyfriend typically does the talking, but i've found myself understanding more than last time i was here.

also, when the topic of conversation is not very complicated i'm able to get the big picture, not yet follow it completely. for example, when my bf and his sister were having a basic "small-talk" convo, I could get the themes as in how's their other sibling doing, their granma's birthday, how is his spanish going etc. That also made me feel quite accomplished :)

And, which is more exciting to me, I've been talking to my boyfriends loads (and I mean loads more) in finnish than we did before. It got to a point were he mainly speaks in finnish (we played a board game only in finnish!!) Obviously gotta point that it's not a realistic language level (he calls it baby finnish haha) but I've noticed that common and basic expressions and replies come to me way faster and kinda more natural after this week. He's quite impressed with my progress (validation goes brr jsjs) and says he says lots of stuff expecting me to not understand, and then I reply, even if it's very broken finnish, which he doesn't expect, so you can tell I'm super happy!! And definitely super motivated to go back full force to studying once I'm back (and my going-back-home-and-long-distance sadness has passed a bit)

So yeah, gotta enjoy the last days of my trip and will be back with my studying posts once I'm back. Gonna try get my hands on some finnish simple books or magazines before coming back so I can stock on materials for the next months!

Update overall: really happy and in peace, nice reminder of why i'm doing what i'm doing ❤️‍🩹
