Louis is a gifted musician spending his days on the wrong side of a drive-thru window. Harry is the lead singer of a band in need of a little talent. Their big break is a thousand miles away.

With a deep sigh, Louis leaned his chair on its back two legs, propping one of his feet up next to the till in front of him. The sun was blinding between the trees of the neighbourhood across the street, striking his eyes through the drive-thru window. He yanked the blind closed even though he wasn’t supposed to when the Fotomat was open. But there was no one around and his ability to give a shit had decreased significantly today. Slurping on the can of Coke he brought with him, he pulled out his lyric book.

Louis was not a poet. In fact, the pretentious and dull poetry class he took in his second semester at college was detrimental in his decision to drop out a year later. He didn’t like the confusion of poetry and the rules despite being an art form that claimed to be free of them. Don’t get him wrong, he was confident in his own writing, he just didn’t want to be taught how to do it.

But one look under the cover of that notebook would reveal pages and pages of poetic garbage. Some of it was great, and a couple had even ended up as actual songs back when Louis was performing solo at bars before he gave up on that too. Most of it was scribbled chicken scratch. That was just his process.

He held the notebook against his knees, tracing dark lines across the last words he wrote last night with his pen. It was some bullshit angsty heartbreak harnessed from his high school first love mixed with the anger of being sacked from a band that he was the best instrumentalist in. Sometimes that kind of emotion makes for a perfect writing session, and sometimes it’s a diary entry you never want to see the light of day.

Louis bit the end of his pen, rereading the words on his page. ‘Heart’ had to be the most overused word in love songs, and he had it down in every verse and the chorus. Love songs weren’t even what he wanted to write about. It wasn’t the only feeling out there. It sure as hell wasn’t the most predominant one in his mind.

A loud and abrupt knock on the window made Louis nearly leap out of his seat. His notebook and pen tumbled to the ground as he dropped his feet from the desk. He yanked on the string to make the blind spring back up, knocking his Coke over in the process. He picked it up just as quick, groaning at the mess it made. All the commotion caused the stack of pickup envelopes next to the widow to splay out over the desk in front of him. Now that the customer could see him, he tried to push him all out of the way before he slid the window open.

“Hi, welcome to— Shit!”

One of the envelopes had landed in the small puddle of spilled Coke. He tried to wipe it off on his jeans as quickly as he could before returning it to the scattered pile with the others. Once he finally composed himself, he tried to greet the customer properly.

But then his face fell to disgust.

“What are you doing here?”

“You left so quickly yesterday, we didn’t have the chance to talk,” said Harry, the lead singer of Louis’ former going-nowhere band. Harry had one hand casually rested on the steering wheel, the other elbow poking out the window, and sunglasses sitting low on his nose. Louis hated how effortlessly cool he could always look. It made him the perfect goddamn lead singer.

Louis rolled his eyes. “What did you want me to do? Beg for you to let me stay? ‘You’re out of the band’ was pretty loud and clear.”

“I mean, I thought we could have a discussion about it.”

“So you showed up to my work to have a discussion about it?” He hunched over so just his head was sticking out the window, his fist squished into his cheek to hold his head up.

“You wouldn’t answer the phone last night.”

“Take a hint,” he snapped, then slid the window shut with enough force to make it bounce halfway open again. He pushed it the rest of the way closed in a huff.

But Harry hadn’t driven away yet, so Louis slumped over in his chair and refused to look in his direction. Why the hell would he show up here? Just to rub it in his face? The new guy always loses the band argument. Louis was over it, and he had the faint remnants of a hangover to prove it.

He took a swig of his Coke that was now almost empty. No one ever left any napkins around here, but a few tissues seemed to do the trick to sop up that puddle. As he tried to avoid getting sticky hands, Louis could see Harry getting out of his car in the bottom corner of his eye. Then he heard the window opening again.

“Louis, listen to me,” Harry pressed. He had his hand in the way so Louis couldn’t shut it, but it did cross Louis’ mind to crush his fingers just to get him out of here.

“Go away,” he stated, pulling the roller blind between them. If only it was soundproof.

The blind sprung up again, revealing a wildly frustrated Harry on one side and an indifferent Louis on the other. He was pretending to read a copy of Vogue that one of the girls from the after-school shift left behind last night.

“We have a meeting with a record company in L.A. and they’re expecting a four-piece to show up. There’s no time to find a new bassist, so you’re back in the band.”

Louis folded down one corner and peeked his eye over Carrie Fisher’s head.

“How’d you get a meeting? The band sucks.”

Harry stared at him, angrily chewing on his lip, then turned around with a huff. “Fuck you,” he muttered, opening his car door.

Louis waited for him to start the engine and leave, but then the words “L.A.” and “record company” flashed with lights and sirens in his mind, and he imagined this opportunity driving off and never looking back.

“Wait!” Louis called out, tossing the magazine to the side and launching himself out the back door. He ran across the front of the car and slammed his hands on the hood so Harry couldn’t move the car an inch further. They eyed each other, and when Louis trusted that Harry wouldn’t speed off the moment he moved, Louis ran around to the passenger seat and got in.

Harry shook his head, both hands gripped tight on the steering wheel. “I’ve been dealing with your bullshit for ten years, man,” he said.

So maybe Louis wasn’t being totally truthful about what happened with the band.

Louis met Harry in his first year of middle school. They ended up in the same gym class, which was hell for every twelve-year-old, but for people like Louis and Harry, it was just a little too much to bear. They found skillful ways to ditch whenever possible, especially when it came to running the mile. Sometimes they’d hang out near the back of the group when everyone was filling out the gym doors, then slip out the side and circle the building before the teacher saw. The equipment closet was full of plenty of hiding spaces that begged to be taken advantage of. The best days were when they had a substitute who wouldn’t even notice that they never came back from a bathroom break in the change room.

In high school, they drifted, hanging out in the same group of freaks and burnouts, but not often with each other. They’d find themselves at the same parties and bickering in the same cars full of friends, but that initial bond had faded. Once college rolled around, they weren’t surprised to find out they’d be going to the same state school, but discovering their dorms were across the hall from each other was quite the shock.

They had become inseparable again, except for the inevitable monthly fights that left them not speaking to each other for days at a time. That went on for about two years until Louis dropped out and Harry continued with his literature degree. During that time, they hardly saw each other at all. Louis began to wonder if their friendship had only ever been one of convenience. But just as the year of 1972 was beginning, Louis got a phone call from that on-and-off best friend of his asking if he wanted to join his band.  

Harry and Louis fought from day one, but just as much as they hated each other’s guts, they loved each other too. Louis would still consider Harry his friend, but he would have no problem telling him what an insufferable bastard he was right to his face. It was a brotherly bond. Sort of.

“How’d you get the meeting?” Louis asked, turning sideways in his seat. “When is it?”

“We sent in our demo and they want to talk to us. That’s it,” he said. “The meeting is next week and they want all of us there.”

“Me included?”

“You’re on the demo.”

The demo was pretty shit if you asked Louis, but he decided to keep that to himself. They recorded it at their old college in the crummy basement studio run by students, and you could guess that by the first listen. Louis looked out at the empty parking lot ahead of them. He had memorized every detail of this parking lot. It had become the scenery for his life. He couldn’t wait until he never had to look at it again.

“Do you actually want me back in the band?” Louis wondered, sincerity in his voice for once.

“I—” Harry started, but didn’t look him in the eye. “I want to be at a place where you could be in the band without the two of us constantly at each other’s necks.”

“That would be nice, yeah,” Louis sighed.

They sat in silence, Louis weighing his options and Harry wondering if he really should’ve taken that ignored phone call as a hint.

“So, what, is this to discuss an album deal?” Louis asked, hoping more detail might help his decision.

“It’s to discuss our potential. They didn’t tell me a whole lot, but if they want to spend their time on us then they gotta have some hope.”

A car horn blared loudly behind them, an impatient customer waiting his turn to desperately develop the photos from his five-year-old’s birthday party, surely. It startled them, but that was Louis’ cue to get back to work, he supposed.

“Can I think about it?” Louis asked. He was already halfway out the door.

“Not for too long. We meet them next week.”

The horn blared again.

“One second!” Louis called out. The guy in the car flipped him the bird and Louis wasn’t hesitant to send him one right back.

“What’s the label?”

“CBS,” Harry said.

Shit, Louis thought. CBS was no joke.

“Move your fucking car!” the guy behind them hollered out his window.

Harry glanced at the angry face in his rear-view mirror, then ignored it completely. Louis looked like he was about to leave, but Harry grabbed his arm to stop him. “Before you go, take this.” He dropped a roll of film into Louis’ open palm.

Louis looked at it curiously, his other hand on the door handle. “What’s this?”

Harry laughed. “Photos I need to get developed. This is a Fotomat, is it not?”

“It is,” Louis said slowly.

“I’ll be back in twenty-four hours,” Harry said, plucking his sunglasses off the dash and sliding them onto his face. “For those photos and for an answer.”

I have finally finished finals this semester and will now try and do some more writing. To all of my new followers because of the HASO story, like I said before that was a one off story, however I think I am going to do a rewrite of it because I am not entirely satisfied with the state and flow of it at current.

Quick context for this one, I am/was an army brat and so this is half personal experience half an amalgamation of the experiences of all my friends. Dont necessarily take this as exactly what it's like for everyone as experiences may vary.

Also if any of you like a specific part of this story let me know. I can write at least this much on any subsection of this story alone. So if something catches your eye I am more than happy to write on it.

I sit in a pool of memories slowly drifting from thought to thought. Moving time is upon us and in preperation it's time to purge all unnecessary items from the house. I flash back to when I was younger, my mom is holding up a cheap drive-thru toy. She looks at me expectantly waiting for a response to a silent question.

"Let go," I say as she drops the item in a box bound for good will only to hold up another object of mine.

In years past this process of sorting through all of my belongings was a team effort between my parents and I, but now since I am older and my younger brother needs the help, I am left to my own to sift through my possessions.

I tip over a box of assorted things and wonder through my past lives. Each object acts as a mile marker through my life and each move a save point. Any thing that I have kept until now, my 10th move in 16 years, has, if not clearly designed for enjoyment or play, held some significance to me. Almost nothing out of this box is discarded because as the years go on the importance of these objects only increases.

Not only is this process a reminder for me of all my past appearances, it serves a highly functional purpose. The first is that the government will only pay for so much to be moved and we typically own more than they are willing to pay for, so we cut back. The second reason is in acknowledgment of a harsher reality of the world, people don't care about kids stuff. Unless one takes great care to prepackaged or show that the objects in a child's room are fragile, everything from toys to trophies will all be haphazardly thrown into a random box.

I move on carefully looking over my display case looking for anything that could easily break if not properly stored. My eyes come to rest on a fake flower made out of fabric by my mom. The pain of high school love torn apart bites at my mind. This flower was the partner to the corsage that I gave to my date to prom. I remember being so excited to go with her because I am homeschooled and never thought I would get anything like a prom. But it doesn't matter now, her family moved in the opposite direction that we were going about 4 weeks ago. I almost leave the flower there, resolving to let fate decide if it is valuable, but as I am turning a away my hand reaches out on seemingly its own and drops the fake plant into an old cigar box for protection. I guess I will control fate this time

The house is empty and clean. Everyone is doing one last walk through of this place to make sure nothing is left behind even though something always is. As I look for anything I also remember everything making sure to not leave a single memory trapped in the walls of this temporary home of mine. As I tramp down the stairs, in my head I am gliding gracefully on a piece of a box after moving in. Mom insisted on being safe and I can now almost see the pile of stuffed animals and pillows that my brothers and I had piled at the end of the make shift ramp to satisfy her worry. As I jump into the nonexistent pile, I drop into the living room, where, despite all the cleaning we did, I can still see the spots on the carpet from the feet of the sofa, a sofa my mom was confined to for the better part of our time here while she was busy kicking cancer's ass. A darkness sets at the edge of my vision slowly consuming all I can see as my head is bombarded by negative memories from those days. As I hit the door, the light from outside shatters the dark over my mind like a hammer through glass. As we pull away I want nothing to do with that house again, not even looking back one last time.

I lay piled under the stiff covers of the hotel. It is the night before we leave for the airport and I start to unpack the last few days. They have gone by like a blur but I know I will remember them for years to come. First there was my eagle scout ceremony where I reaped the reward of all my hard work over specifically the last few months but really the past 6 years. It was the last time I will see most of those people given that none of them were military and I plan on never ending up back here. Then there was chapel. The last service at this place where I tried to just act like everything was normal, just a regular Christmas sunday. I showed up 2 hours early just like every week, where I then took my place in the sound booth mixing the best sound that the chapel had in years or so I have been told. It all went wrong though when the preacher leaned his head into the booth telling me to turn on his mic for one quick last announcement, where I was called up on stage for a farewell. However, the one "last time" that I really will miss happened earlier in the day when I hung out with my friends for the last time. The group had shrunk considerably by that time due to a huge fallout between members and others were taken by the army but what remained was solid. As I left them I said seeya because you never know when the army will bring friends back together. Well for that reason and one other. In the days leading up to the move you see everyone at different random times and so you never really know when you will see them for the last time. It is always easier to say a casual goodbye everytime and never actually have a formal one than to treat every farewell like the last one and live the pain multiple times. However, less pain doesn't mean no pain. I blank my mind for the rest of the night gathering all emotions and putting them in a cardboard box to unpack later in more healthy time.

On the plane something magical happens. You see noone but a select few get to rewrite their lives every few years. During transition, when the body and mind are free of the last place, a morph occurs. This change is unseen by all because your family already knows the real you. However you get to change yourself completely before landing at the new place. You get to change what information you share with everyone and by selecting how you act and what you reveal you can choose who you are to everyone. The best part is there is noone from your old life to mess it up and break the illusion and throw a wrench into the act. You can become whomever you want to be. It takes skill to execute properly, it requires that you craft a mask so intricate and durable that noone questions its authenticity and no shock can damage it, but I have had a life times worth of practice. Who will I become only I know and who I was is only stored in the memories of objects in boxes and the minds of people thousands of miles away.

It's been almost 4 years since that move yet it still sticks out in my head. I did not know it at the time but it was the last move I ever made with my family. My plans changed and I started my life before i had originally planned and now moves like that are a thing of the past, a memory held in objects. Unfortunately with growing up requires one last mask switch, this one more permanent. Hopefully my experience beyond my years set my up better than my peers at finding the correct one. Who knows what it will look like when it is finished. I have been working on this one for the longest time of any, nearly 2 years now, much longer than a single plane flight. It won't be done for at least another 2 but we will see. I can only hope I will be happy with this one because unlike the cyclic replacement of masks in my youth, when I decide to put this one on who knows when it will come off.

Madamspellman Teacher AU: Chapter 6: The One With Apples and Teeth

AN: So, I've been muling over this a while. I was originally using 'Madamspellman Teacher AU' as a temporary title until I thought of an official one but titles are not my strong suit. So, I'm going to let you guys have a say, if you have a story title let me know or if you want the title to stay as it is. Thanks and enjoy!

On the first of the month Principle Hawthorne called a staff meeting immediately after school. The meetings mostly consisted on what was coming up like club fair next Friday and Halloween festivities. Faculty advisors needed to fill out a form to register the clubs attendance and spot in the fair to Mrs. Meeks by Friday. Hawthorne also talked about the football teams status in the division but Zelda tuned him out. She focused on her notes for her Chinese class, she was giving them a test Friday and wanted to finalize her answer key but Mary wasn’t helping. There weren’t any open seats when Zelda joined the meeting. She was doing some last minute marking and wanted to finish before heading for the meeting. There was an open spot near the window, right next to Mary. Mary smirked and gave her a small wink. Zelda just smiled in return. When Hawthorne started talking about the football team Zelda felt something press against her back. It was Mary’s hand, her palm rested just above her hip. Then her fingers started taping up her back. Zelda tensed not because she disliked it but because they were in a room full of their fellow coworkers and their boss. Mr. Hawthorne paused and looked at them for a split second but continued on. When the meeting was concluded Mary whispered a ‘see you later’ into Zelda’s ear, it sent a delicious shiver down her spine.

“Ms. Spellman a word?” Zelda groaned at the loss of her good feeling bubble as annoyance filled her. Hawthorne wanted her. He stood at the front of the room rocking on his heels like he was a grade school child.

“Yes, Mr. Hawthorne?”

“I was curious of your plans for this weekend.”

“I’m apple picking and pumpkin carving with my family.”

“Oh… so concrete plans.” Zelda just hummed. Hawthorne had bowed his head in what appeared to be dejection but he wasn’t anywhere near as clever as he thought he was. He looked at her with heavy hooded eyes that gleamed in hope that she would change her mind. It might work for teenagers but Zelda wasn’t a fool.

“Very, it’s a Spellman tradition. Now if that’s all I must be on my way.” Zelda turned on her heel and left, she was eager to go home.

“That was nicely done.” Zelda smiled when she saw Mary. She was leaning against the wall like it was a casual thing for a teacher to do. Zelda mocked curtsy. Having brought her coat and bag with her to the meeting Zelda made her way to her car. Mary followed, standing close enough that their hands brushed together. This was another new thing with Mary, she would walk with Zelda all the way to her car. Zelda made it a goal to leave work around 4:30 at the latest, she wanted to pick her daughter up at a decent time, and Mary will always be waiting in the doorway of her office or her classroom. And surprisingly enough Zelda didn’t find it as annoying as she thought she would.

“Mary?”

“Hmm?”

“What are you doing this Saturday?” Mary snorted and Zelda spun on her heel so fast that Mary crashed into her. “What’s so funny?”

“Sorry it’s just that… oh god, it wouldn’t be this funny if I hadn’t just overheard this exact conversation.” Zelda huffed as Mary went into full blown laughter. She opened the drivers side door more forcefully than needed to and threw her case into the car but didn’t get in herself.

“Fine, continue on laughing. I won’t invite you to join us this Saturday.” After another two minutes Mary finally stopped laughing. She took a few deep calming breaths before that signature smirk came back.

“I would love to join you Saturday.” Zelda, still a little huffed, finally calmed down. A gentle smile graced her face.

“Okay then.” Mary leaned over the car door that was between them and quickly gave Zelda a peck on the lips. Zelda then got into the car with an even bigger smile as she drove off to pick up her daughter.

Friday nights were lively in the Spellman household. Hilda had every other Friday night off, she was in the kitchen buzzing around making something. Sabrina after surviving another week of school and homework for the week finished was playing a game with Ambrose. Vida would buzz between helping Hilda and seeing what her cousins were up to but most of the time she was with Zelda. Friday nights was when Zelda did chores around the house. She’d change the sheets or did some dusting. Tonight was laundry, Vida folded small things like pillow cases and sorted while Zelda maned the machines and iron. While they were down in the basement Zelda could still hear everything that was happening upstairs, the clattering of pots, music from the stereo, the occasional argument between Sabrina and Ambrose. It was the perfect way to unwind after a long week. With all of her family in the house Zelda didn’t think twice nor did she stop ironing out the wrinkles from one of Sabrina’s dresses when she heard footsteps on the stairs until her daughter running across the room caught her eye.

“Mary!” Vida waited patiently for Mary to reach the bottom of the stairs so she could hug the other woman. Mary went one step further, she scooped up Vida, hugging her tightly and blowing raspberries on her cheek and neck causing Vida to giggle. Zelda watched with a soft smile. The scene didn’t cause a sting of jealousy but instead a fuzzy feeling that filled her with warmth.

“You’re early. A whole day early.”

“Hilda invited me for dinner.” Zelda hummed and tried to push the shock off her face. She didn’t know that Hilda had invited Mary and she didn’t know how she felt about her sister interfering in her personal life. But on the other hand her daughter looked so happy chatting to Mary about her week at school.

“Fine. You can help fold.”  Mary opened her mouth to say something but Vida started squirming. When she was placed on the ground she led Mary to her pile of towels that she was working on. Mary threw Zelda a dirty look but sat on the floor to help Vida. Zelda just smirked and continued ironing.

Zelda’s alarm went off at seven the next morning. Most Saturdays she slept in till around nine but they needed to get an early start to the orchard. She sat up and Mary’s arm fell into her lap. For a split second she forgot that Mary spent the night but she smiled softly when she saw Mary’s disheveled head poking out of the duvet cover. Zelda placed a kiss on what she thinks was Mary cheek then got up to get ready for the day. When she came back out of the bathroom dressed in a maroon sweater and black slacks Vida had made her way onto her bed.

“Mommy I’m an oso!” Zelda couldn’t help but smile. Mary had a tight hold on her daughter, clutching her like she was a real teddy bear.

“I see that. Come here my bebe oso.” Vida held her arms out so Zelda could lift her but Mary’s grip on Vida’s waist tightened keeping her in place.

“Can’t take her.” Mary’s voice was muffled into the pillow but Zelda made it out and it caused her to smile. Vida found it amusing and her giggling filled the room.

“Fine then. You two can stay here while I go apple picking.” Vida’s eyes went wide and she started to squirm out of Mary’s hold.

“Mary! Up!” Now free from Mary’s grip Zelda lift her daughter from the bed, placing her on her hip. “Hi Mommy.”

“Hi baby. Why don’t you start getting dress so that we can head down to breakfast. Make sure you get a sweater it’s going to be chilly today.”

“Okay.” Zelda placed a kiss on her daughter’s cheek before setting her down. She turned her attention to Mary who was still on the bed but awake. Mary was looking at her propped on her elbows, Zelda just raised an eyebrow.

“What?”

“You know it’s customary to greet your lover with a morning kiss.”

“I’ll kiss you when you’re dressed for the day.” Mary looked at her with mocked shock.

“You’re a cruel woman Zelda Spellman.” Zelda just smirked because she ultimately got what she wanted. Mary was moving, she got out of the bed with a little stretch and ran her fingers thru her sleep tousled hair. “If you won’t kiss me then I’ll just have to take what I want.” Zelda squeaked under her breath as Mary pulled her close by her waist and kissed her soundly on the lips. Zelda didn’t fight it, she kissed Mary back and draped one of her arms around Mary’s shoulders. It only lasted a moment before a thump and a cry pulled Zelda’s attention to her daughter.

“Mommy I’m stuck!” Zelda looked a Mary who smiled back at her and headed into Zelda’s walk in closet where her overnight bag was placed. Zelda looked at her daughter, Vida was sitting on her bed trapped in her sweater. Zelda just smiled and went to help her daughter. By the time Zelda freed Vida of her sweater and found a matching sock to place on her daughter’s left foot Mary was dressed and her hair and make up was done. They left hand in hand with Vida between them to join the others downstairs.

They arrived at the orchard just before nine thirty. Harvey, Sabrina, and Ambrose arrived in Harvey’s truck, they were already out of the vehicle and waiting when Zelda pulled her car into the free space that was next to them. In Zelda’s car was Mary, Vida, Hilda, and Dr. Cerberus. It didn’t place Zelda in the greatest of moods having to witness what could only be described as a make out session between her niece and her boyfriend and then having to endure Hilda chattering the whole way. Not even five minutes there Sabrina wanted to run off with Harvey to the corn maze. Zelda didn’t want her to, the purpose of being here was to pick apples, but Hilda let them. They ran off hand in hand. Then Ambrose decided he was going as well, he smuggled his bat mask with him and he wanted to see if he could scare the two teens. Zelda told him not to, he was kicked out of the orchard a few years ago for that very reason, but he ran off with that intended purpose. That left her, Mary, Hilda, Dr. Cerberus, and Vida.

After discussing if they needed one basket or two they entered the part of the orchard that was designated for picking. Hilda took one basket and she and Dr. Cerberus headed in the direction where there was more granny smith trees. Zelda took the other and she along with Mary and Vida headed towards where the red apples like fuji and red delicious trees grew. Zelda set the basket down next to a red delicious tree that didn’t have that much foot traffic and waited until Vida brought apples to her. One of the things that made apple picking enjoyable for Zelda was watching her daughter analyze apples that barely fit in her hands. Only apples that Vida found acceptable were brought back to Zelda. Vida was picky, just like her mother, and Zelda was okay with that. Zelda remembered going apple picking when Sabrina was her daughters age. Her niece picked up everything and Zelda took on the role of quality expectation because the last thing they wanted was rotten apples or rocks. But Vida took her time, looking and weighting to what her standards were and thanks to Hilda Vida was a great produce picker. Since they had an extra set of hands Mary would come back with arm fulls of apples. It meant that the basket filled up twice as fast as before and Vida didn’t have to run herself back and forth. When the basket was over flowing they started back. Zelda couldn’t lift the basket herself so she took one side and Mary took the other. Vida walked ahead of them with an apple in her hand that she declared was ‘hers’.

While all the apples that were in the basket came from either the ground or branches that were low enough that Vida could just stand on her toes to get the one that Vida held was different. At one point Vida pointed at a fuji tree and asked Mary to lift her so she could get a particular apple that was on a higher branch. Mary didn’t bat an eye, she set down the apples that they already collected so she could pick up Vida. With a hand on either side of the child’s small waist Mary lifted Vida high in the air. Vida stretched the remainder of the way until the apple that she wanted was safely in her hands. Mary high fived her for a job well done and Vida stashed the apple in her jacket for safe keeping.

They met up with Hilda and Dr. Cerberus, their basket was filled with granny smith apples and some golden delicious. They ‘ohhed’ when Vida showed off her apple. Zelda was surprised to see Dr. Cerberus have actual interest and enthusiasm in hearing Vida talk about her apple. She still wasn’t completely sold on him but she could admit that he was a good guy. While he started to run the baskets back to Harvey’s truck an employee came and Zelda knew what was wrong just by the look on his face. She looked at Hilda who gave her her own ‘I’m not surprised’ look.

“We’ll be right back. Are you okay watching her?” Mary nodded and Zelda gave her a kiss on her cheek. Zelda and Hilda left following the employee in the direction of the corn maze.

“Mary can I eat my apple now?”

“I don’t see why not. Let me wash it real quick then it’s all yours.” Vida nodded and handed her apple to Mary. There was a metal basin where people could wash their hands at the hub of the orchard where other produce and honey and jams were also sold. Mary placed the apple under the water for a second, rubbing the pad of her thumb over the surface before handing it back to Vida with a flick of her wrist to get rid of the excess water.

“Thank you!”

“You’re welcome sweetie.” Mary smiled as Vida started chomping at her apple, leaning slightly on Mary’s legs.

“Fancy seeing you here Ms. Wardwell.” Mary didn’t make an attempt the hide her displeasure. She groaned and rolled her eyes as Mr. Hawthorne approached her. “Enjoying the nice weather and apple picking Ms. Wardwell?”

“I was.” Mr. Hawthorn just nodded and smiled, completely oblivious to her indifference.

“Good. Is that Ms. Spellmans daughter?” Mary didn’t say anything. She just glared and placed a protective hand on Vida’s head. Vida didn’t like Hawthorne either, she hid behind Mary and was eating her apple slower than she was before. “Lisa right?” Disgust filled Mary and she tried to rack her brain for a response that would go over his head but wouldn’t get her fired like kicking him in the balls would. As satisfying as that would be Hawthorne wasn’t worth her job. Before she could think of something Vida cried out behind her. Mary turned to see what was wrong but all she saw was Vida crying as she looked at her apple.

“Sweetie what’s wrong?” Vida mumbled something but Mary couldn’t make out over the crying. Mary got down to Vida’s level and Vida latched on to her, wrapping her small arms around her neck and crying into her shoulder. Mary just ‘shh’d’ and rubbed small soothing circles into Vida’s back. Eventually Vida calmed down to where she was only crying softly. “Do you think you can now tell me what’s wrong?” Vida sniffled and hiccuped but nodded.

“The apple took my teeth.”

“I don’t understand.” Vida held out her apple which Mary took. Mary turned the apple around in her hands until she saw it. Two little white teeth stuck in the flesh of the apple. “Oh honey you just lost some baby teeth.”

“What do you mean?”

“Well, we are all born with two sets of teeth. When you get to be around your age you start to lose your baby teeth and get your permanent teeth.”

“So I’m okay?”

“You’re perfect.” Vida smiled and wiped away the remainder of her tears with her sleeves. “And do you know what the best part about losing your baby teeth is?”

“What?”

“You get a visit from the tooth fairy. You leave your teeth under your pillow at night and when you wake up they would be turned into quarters.”

“Really!?” Mary hummed and picked up Vida. Vida smile softly as she rested her head on Mary’s shoulder.

“Isn’t that overstepping your place Ms. Wardwell?” Mary turned to glare at Mr. Hawthorne. She had forgotten he was there. Mary didn’t like the fact that he looked self entitled in telling her right. Very deep down Mary knew he was right, she shouldn’t have told Vida about the tooth fairy but there was nothing wrong about comforting her. But ultimately she wasn’t going to take advice from a guy who couldn’t even remember Vida’s name.

“Not from where I’m standing.” Mr. Hawthorne paled to a ghostly white and turned slowly around to face Zelda.

“M-Ms. Spellman.”

“Mommy! I lost teeth!” Vida smiled and there were fresh gaps thanks to the lost of her lower front teeth.

“I see that baby.” Zelda took her daughter from Mary. Vida smiled and settled her head on her mother’s chest. “Was there something that you needed Mr. Hawthorne?” Mr. Hawthorne stuttered but shook his head. “Good. Shall we?” Zelda smiled at Mary and held out her hand. Mary smirked and took the offered hand, lacing her fingers between Zelda’s. They walked away without another word or a second glance.

“I hope you know what you’re doing.” Zelda looked at Mary dead on.

“I know perfectly well what I am doing.”

“Good.” Mary stopped and stood squarely in front of Zelda. In the distance just over Zelda’s shoulder she could see Mr. Hawthorne looking at them. “Because there’s no turning back.” Mary kissed Zelda lightly on the cheek but it was enough to cause Hawthorne to huff away. A ping of triumph shot through Mary, it made having to deal with him a little better.

“I don’t want to.” Mary nodded and they continued their walk to the car to join the others.

Warning: The following post is full of personal opinions and life experiences. If you’d like to scroll thru your dash without the disruptions of another person’s drama, please feel free to do so. The sentence structure, formatting, and grammar of said post below will probably be atrocious. There will be unnecessary gifs. There will be slight rampant exaggeration. There might not even be a point to this post other than my unhealthy need to scream into the void.

Lets start with a little context.

I have three jobs: I nanny for a family three days a week, I nanny-sub*, and I’m a self-employed portrait photographer. I also act whenever I can, but I don’t seem to ever get paid for that.

*I am employed by a nanny service who offers short term (ie, one day) nannies that cover for a nanny who is sick, care for a child who cannot go to their regular childcare provider for a number of reasons, or many other random scenarios. It’s very much like substitute teaching. It’s an on-call position and there’s usually only a day or two notice, sometimes only hours. I tell them when I’m available and they text me jobs. It works well.

Most of the time.

I very rarely know what I’m headed into before I get there, other than the address and ages of the kids, so its completely go-with-the-flow and run with whatever the parents throw at me, which is never dull. The clients are a wide range of income levels and housing situations, but the majority are upper class.

Things usually go bad or get awkward for three reasons: 1. The kids are little monsters. (Or are ill. I don’t do well with bodily fluids other than boogers and drool. Those kind of come with the territory) 2. The house is uncomfortable. (There was one carpet that was so stained you couldn’t even see what color it originally was and it smelled so bad and the kid wanted me to sit on it to play with him. I died. It was my first day. I halfway think they send all the newbies there to test them out.) 3. The parents are still at home. (Sometimes they’re just working from home, and that’s only kind of awkward because they stay out of your way for the most part. Sometimes they’re very much at home and its awkward as all get out.)

Yesterday was due to #3.

When it’s just you and the kids, you can kind of create your own atmosphere and set your own boundaries around the guidelines the parents gave you. When they’re there too, there are no boundaries and its a free for all.

Another point to mention, is that its always 5+ hours at a time. You’re stuck there for the day.

Day before yesterday, I get a text for a job. 5yr old and an 18mo old, 8am-4pm.

Not bad.

I get the contact info and give the mom a call. She explains that her wife is doing chemo and the baby is really attached to her, so they need someone to watch him while she rests. Oh, and by the way, they have family staying with them, so the 5yr old will mostly be hanging with them and their three kids and I’d only need to help help her out with her lunch. The mom I talked to would be at work.

Odd scenario, but ok.

I get there and everyone is in a panic, which is discomforting in and of itself, but they’re all speaking a foreign language. (I’ve worked with a few families who have a different culture/speak a different language than me, and I enjoy it, but) I’m really sensitive to lots of people talking loudly at once, so this was obstacle number one.

The mom I spoke to on the phone (lets call her Mom #1, who is very American, btw) wanders by after a bit and is like “oh, by the way, we got broken into and robbed last night, so that’s what everyone is crazy about right now.”

What?!This family cannot catch a break. Mom #2 is doing chemo and now you’ve had a robbery?! Man. Glad I’m hear to help out a bit.

But... there are five, very capable adults here besides the two moms? Who all have a relationship with this toddler? The toddler who has separation anxiety?

So, yes, lets call in a complete stranger. GREAT idea.

ANYWAY.

Mom #1 brings me upstairs to where Toddler has a death grip on Mom #2. They introduce me to him and the 5yro, who promptly throws her ipad to the floor because she “has no one to play with.” (The cousin sitting next to her is obviously not enough? Or the two others who are still sleeping?)

Mom #2 hands Toddler off to Mom #1 while she explains where everything is, but a code red meltdown has now been triggered in both children.

Lots of screaming. Lots of unhappy children. The horde of cousins are still talking at full volume too.

After much deliberation they decide to put the Toddler in the stroller and send me off on a walk. This seemed like a decent idea. I’d worked with enough toddlers to know that he’d calm down pretty soon once he couldn’t see Mom #2 anymore.

Small problem.

It’d been raining all morning.

But it “wasn’t raining” then.

So, I set off down the driveway with a screaming Toddler. He settled down pretty quickly, as expected, and I felt very much like I dodged a bullet as I strolled thru a nice park with a now sleeping Toddler.

Until it began to rain again.

And by rain, I mean POUR.

Oh, and it was all of 60*. They had sent me and the kid out with a gauzy blanket to cover him, but I snagged a thicker blanket out of my car on the way past as I grabbed my rain coat. You know, “just in case.”

So, I’m standing there, trying to figure out if he’s warm enough and when the torrential rain was going to end.

Cue the first vague text post.

They offered to come pick us up in the car... but I’m like I’d kind of rather be here? In the rain?

It let up pretty soon and I wandered around the park, pushing the stroller. I walked four miles... in a tiny park.

Then he started to wake up and I headed back, not entirely sure what kind of mood he’d be in.

Mom #1′s like “oh, hey, I’m not going to work because I have to deal with all of this robbery stuff” and I’m low key trying to figure out a way to get out of this.

But instead, I feed the Toddler a snack.

His sister and the cousins are completely engaged watching Sing and after he’s done eating he wanders over there too. I don’t blame the kid. It looked fun. (But before she went to watch the movie Sister wandered over and stole half his food?!)

Except, Mom #2 wanders over and is like “since they’re all watching the movie, can you help my mom with the peas?”, so I sit down next to the Grandma and start shelling peas... because I’m a white farm kid from the Midwest and that’s what you do with peas. I had quite the pile going.

Then one of the cousin adults wanders over and tells me in very broken English (but very nicely and politely!) that I’m doing it wrong. I was just supposed to snap the ends off, whatever they’re cooking uses the pods too.

Well, that would have been nice to know.

And that’s when the cops showed up.

NO JOKE.

Cue the next vague text post.

I had a moment of panic before I realized they were there because of the robbery and not because I was getting a parking ticket. (this actually happened to me at a sub job once, except they just left it on my car)

More chaos in a foreign language erupts and I’m hastily shoved out the door to bring the kid to the library. They hand me the diaper bag and put his car seat in the car and my only instructions were to “go to XYZ Library and come back when he gets fussy.”

Its noon. I’m done at four. I have diapers and the kid has snacks. Could I play my cards right and stay at the library all day?

We play until the kid is practically asleep on the floor playing with a truck.

BUT COMPLETELY HAPPY, GOSH DARN IT.

So I text them and they tell me to come back.

Cue the all caps text post.

So I get him in the car and give him a couple goldfish because he hadn’t really eaten lunch and would most likely fall asleep in a matter of minutes.

And he does.

So I pull up to the house and I’m like “he’s asleep, imma just sit here in the car with him.”

So I did.

But then both moms and the 5yro have to leave to go do something for an hour?

And the kid wakes up again before they get back?

So now I’m back in the house with the extended family (who? don’t? speak? English?) and a screaming Toddler who is hungry but won’t eat anything from either me or the mom of the cousin kids. They sang him all sorts of adorable children’s songs in their language. They played play dough. Cousin Mom finally got him to eat some fruit cuz his cousin’s were eating it too... you know, must not be shady if they’re eating it to?

IDK toddler logic sometimes. We should have tried that first.

Then the Moms come back and they’re like we still have 15 minutes of your time left, go play outside.

Which on paper makes sense? With any other kid it wouldn’t have been a problem?

Except now they’re moving him away from the cousins who FINALLY had him distracted and content and handing him over to me to go wander about the yard aimlessly for 15 minutes? And he can see his mom inside and he’s outside?

Yeah. That didn’t go well.

So in the end.... they didn’t really do anything bad or ask me to do something that was out line? My day just royally sucked?
