The "last mile" is something cities have been trying to solve for decades. While getting to most cities is fairly easy and there are quite a few transportation options, getting around the last mile to your final destination is often not straightforward. At the other end of the journey, the "first mile" often suffers from the same problem. How do you get to work from your home or apartment to the nearest bus stop or train station? Recently, everyone is discussing the use of electric skateboards to solve the problem of "last mile". Skateboard enthusiasts who have used it have proposed the advantages of electric skateboards in solving this problem: light and portable, can be carried on cars/trains, etc., and electric skateboards do not need to be pedaled by themselves. Heat exhaustion is no joke, and a driver with heat exhaustion is a hazard to anyone in the vicinity. The inherent lack of reliable bathroom access for delivery drivers doesn't help with staying hydrated either.
The difficulty in getting large companies to respond to labor action due to shell games with subcontractors is something that ultimately has to be addressed if any modern unions are to get anywhere.
Frequently large companies are absolutely fucking over the subcontractor companies themselves too, and those subcontractor companies are often expected to be the ones getting their hands dirty and facing legal censure for eg. illegal labor practices or hiring people who aren't legal to work but also are being forced to cut corners by the larger company very intentionally.
They want air-conditioning in the vans so they don't die from heat stroke.
I haven't found anything saying the drivers want people to boycott Amazon, btw.
